2023.06.02 15:50 fspaits Asheville's Development
How did y'all do it? Gf and I came down last weekend from Richmond, VA, and the downtown was lively even on a rainy Sunday afternoon. Richmond is pretty comparable in that it's an artsy beer town, but our population is much larger, and yet our downtown is basically abandoned. Does Asheville have a competent government who knows how to invest in development, or is the growth from various grassroots efforts? It's also really nice to see the French Broad River highlighted throughout the town, whereas we have the mighty James River, and our city can't keep the sewers from overflowing into it.
I'm not trying to say Asheville is without its issues, but from an outsiders perspective, y'all have a lot of nice things going for it.

Executed by the gods for the “crime,” she is cast into the cycle of reincarnation, starting at the very bottom – as a worm. While she slowly accumulates positive karma and earns reincarnation as higher life forms, she also has to navigate inflexible clerks, bureaucratic corruption, and the whims of the gods themselves. Will Piri ever reincarnate as a fox again? And once she does, will she be content to stay one? Advance chapters and side content available to Patreon backers! Previous Chapter Next Chapter Table of Contents Chapter 95: Reunion In the days that followed, Honeysuckle Croft saw as many visitors as it did during the New Year. The very evening after my return, Mistress Jek invited Floridiana to dinner. The mage arrived practically exploding with questions about South Serica that her pride wouldn’t permit her to ask. I regaled her with tales anyway, just because I was so nice. Then, the day after that, one of the schoolhouse rats overheard Taila and Nailus giggling about me at recess. They alerted Master Rattus, who scampered to the carpentry workshop to check if Master Gravitas knew already. From the extra-impassive look on the cat spirit’s face when he showed up at Honeysuckle Croft, he hadn’t – and the rat had lorded it over the cat spy. Bobo and Floridiana separately told Den that I was back – with varying degrees of excitement, I imagined – and of course the first words out of the little dragon’s mouth when he saw me were: “Let’s have a welcome-home party!” But to my surprise, the idea of a night of dancing and drinking didn’t excite me as it used to. Where? I can’t exactly swim, you know. Opening my wings, I shook my feathers at him. Okay, technically, I didn’t know if sparrows could swim, since I hadn’t fallen into a river yet, but there was an even bigger reason that I didn’t want to reprise our parties in the Caltrop Pond Water Court. An absence, that was. Stripey hadn’t come back to Honeysuckle Croft. Of course he hadn’t. It wasn’t even close to a hundred years since he went on to his next life. And yet. And yet. “It’s not like I was going to hold it in my pond or something!” Den squeaked, taking my objection at face value. Floridiana’s raised eyebrows made him clear his throat and adopt a more dignified tone. “Ahem. It was not my intention to host the party in a location that would be inconvenient for any of my guests, much less the guest of honor. I am certain that the Baron would be honored to lend us the use of his great hall for the event.” I’d bet. It might be worth it just to see that stuck-up seneschal’s reaction. Come to think of it, Anasius had been Stripey’s blood nephew. Shouldn’t he have been at the battle too? Shouldn’t filial piety and reverence for the older generation have required him to sacrifice himself to save his uncle? I opened my beak to accept Den’s invitation just to spite that duck – but the tiny voice at the back of my head, the one that always sounded like Stripey’s, whispered, Is this wise? I stopped to think. No. No. It absolutely was not wise. My homecoming had already drawn so much attention in the barony that word of it might even reach Heaven and, well, Heaven frowned on people masquerading as divine emissaries. In the end, I told Den, I am honored by your welcome, but a formal banquet is unnecessary. It is enough simply to see everyone. However, having set his heart on an epic party, Den wasn’t so easy to dissuade. “Aww, come on, Rosie! We’ve been working so hard. We haven’t had a party in forever. I haven’t seen most of the taskforce in forever! It’ll be fun to get everyone together, for old times’ sake – oh.” He’d finally spotted Bobo. The bamboo viper had drooped into a despondent heap of coils next to the honeysuckle bush. After a long, painful silence, Den cleared his throat. “Ah. Well. Yes. I see how a party might be too much. After…such a long journey. You must be tired. How long are you staying with us?” To that, I could only shrug my wings. /// Mistress Jek and Taila (mostly Taila) wanted me to sleep at Honeysuckle Croft, but Bobo begged me to stay with her, and I took her up on the offer. There was something we needed to talk about, something I needed to tell her, which was much better suited to a dark bamboo stand at night. Even so, it was a few days before I found the courage to bring it up. Hey, Bobo? Are you asleep? In the moonlight that filtered through the leaves, the bamboo viper was a blobby rope wound around a stalk of bamboo. “Uh uh. You?” Me neither. A long silence. A light breeze rustled the bamboo. Hey, Bobo? “Uh huh?” I saw him. “You sssaw… him?” All of a sudden, Bobo’s front half shot up. (Snakes had some serious abs.) “You sssaw Ssstripey??? Where? In Sssouth Ssserica? How’s he doing? What’s he up to? What’d he sssay?” I shook my head, knowing she could see it in the dark. It was up in Heaven. Before both of us reincarnated. “Oh! Oh! What’d he reincarnate as?” I could only shake my head again. I don’t know. After a moment, I added, He didn’t want me to know. Bobo processed that. “Where’d he reincarnate?” I don’t know either. But he asked if you were okay, and he promised that whatever he reincarnates as, wherever he reincarnates, whenever he awakens, he’ll come back here. We made a promise, to meet at Honeysuckle Croft. Pattering sounds filled the bamboo stand, like raindrops on leaves. I turned away and pretended to preen my feathers. Some time later, Bobo sniffled and said in a reasonable approximation of good cheer, “Ssso all I have to do is ssstay here! And wait for him! And he’ll come!” I already regretted telling her about the promise. I couldn’t shake the impression of my last meeting with Stripey. He’d promised, yes, but in a perfunctory manner, his focus already shifting to the life to come. He hadn’t left any messages for his friends, for Bobo, either, although he might have guessed that I’d be able to carry them. To be fair, I hadn’t offered. It hadn’t occurred to me to offer. But if he’d really wanted to, he would have asked, wouldn’t he…? No. He promised to come back, and a promise was a promise. Yes, I told Bobo . Yes, I’m sure he’ll come. /// Up in Heaven: Flicker struggled to straighten his spine and thrust his shoulders back, but no matter what he did, they kept slumping forward, as if they wanted to shrink his silhouette. He should walk with purpose – he would be far less suspicious if he walked with purpose – but he couldn’t help ducking behind an ornamental boulder every time he saw another god’s or goddess’ entourage. None of them paid him the slightest attention, of course. A lone star sprite clerk at the gathering of Heaven’s elite to watch the princess-of-the-night blossoms open? There were only two reasons he could be here: Either he’d been summoned by a superior, or he’d come to deliver a message to a superior. Which was, in fact, accurate. Earlier that day, he’d received a missive from the Star of Reflected Brightness. The Lady of the Princess-of-the-Night tells me her blossoms will open tonight. Come to the viewing party. I shall wait under the willow. She didn’t need to specify which willow. There was only the one under which they always met. It had begun when she spoke to Soul Number 11270 (whom she hadn’t known was Piri – gods, oh gods, had she been furious when she found out!) about protecting Jek Taila. It had continued when she decided that he could provide her with intelligence on the inner workings of the Bureau of Reincarnation. And it was still going on, whenever she had an update for him on his biggest problem soul. As if knowing what Piri was up to might enable him to rein her in! It was not the Star’s department. She really shouldn’t be encroaching on another god’s domain, but the Kitchen God was never there to take offense. And the Star of Heavenly Joy was treading carefully – for a god – while his formal appointment as Assistant Director pended before the committee. Bowing low, Flicker stepped off the path for the Goddess of the Moon and her lieutenants, the Jade Rabbit and the Lord of the Cassia Tree. Hopping after them was the Moon Toad and, finally, the exhausted Woodcutter brought up the rear, dragging his axe. He’d been sentenced for some long-forgotten crime to chop at the cassia tree that grew in the courtyard of the Palace of the Moon. His punishment would end only when he cut it down – which, given that the tree healed itself as fast as he chopped it, would never happen. As for the Lord of the Cassia Tree, he’d earned his half of the punishment by boasting of his regenerative abilities too often and too loudly before the gods and goddesses from the Ministry of Medicine. Once the Moon entourage had swept past in a cloud of cassia cinnamon fragrance, Flicker veered away from the courtyard where all the gods and goddesses were gathering. Down by the lake, a single crane maiden reclined on a carved stone bench. Nearby, a faint glow showed behind the curtain of willow leaves. Pushing through them, Flicker bowed low. (In her spirit of magnanimity, the Star had ordered him to stop genuflecting after the first few times.) “Rise, Flicker.” As always, her voice wrapped around him like starlight and breeze. His heart beat faster at the sound. “Haven’t I told you that there is no need for ceremony here?” He straightened his back but kept his eyes cast down respectfully. “Thank you, my lady. How may I be of service to you?” She waved one hand in what was meant to be a cutting gesture, but it flowed like a shooting star’s tail. “Enough of the formality. Please.” He stayed stubbornly silent. Eventually, he heard her sigh. “Very well then. Flicker, are you aware that – no, of course you wouldn’t be. But Soul Number 11270 has left Lychee Grove. In fact, it has left South Serica entirely.” Flicker was so shocked that his head jerked up. “She left?” Tardily, he added, “My lady.” “Yes. She has attempted to leave every life thus far, has she not? This time she succeeded.” Stunningly, his first reaction was a sense of betrayal. But she promised, he wanted to say. We talked about it, and she promised to live out this life in Lychee Grove the way she’s supposed to. But of course she hadn’t. It had been foolish of him to take her word for it. His second thought – the one that should have come first – was: “Oh gods! Oh stars! Did she – did she make it back to – she did, didn’t she?” “Yes. She did.” The Star’s face was drawn and tight, and exhausted in a way that reminded him of the Woodcutter. It made his heart ache. “Why can she not leave my daughter alone? Why, life after life, does she seek to meddle? You’ve seen her file – you’ve talked to her. What does she seek? Is it because, having saved Taila’s life previously, she needs to balance it out by destroying the child now? Why can she not leave her in peace?” The last words came out almost as a plea. No, they were a plea. A plea for someone, anyone, even a star sprite clerk, to explain to her why the souls of her daughter and her nemesis were so inextricably tangled. “My lady….” Flicker chose his words with care, knowing that she would not like his answer. Might even punish him for it. “It may be difficult to believe, but she does feel fondness for the people in the Claymouth Barony.” The Star made a sound that, in someone who was not a goddess, might have been called a snort. “I’ve seen her so-called ‘fondness’ before.” “That may be so….” Flicker hesitated again, then decided that he might as well go for it. “But my lady, she is changing. She is improving. She knows there is no further – personal gain – to be derived from their lives, but she still cares. She asks me about them and, since I cannot answer her questions to her satisfaction, she tries to fly back to see for herself.” “Can’t she see that they’re all better off without her? If she truly cared about them, she would stay away from them! She destroys everything she touches!” The outburst made Flicker jump. The Star breathed in and out, deeply, several times. “Be that as it may, the next time you see her, tell her to stay away from Jek Taila. Tell her that is an order, from me.” Flicker bowed low. “Yes, my lady.” She left him then, floating towards the courtyard where gardeners had arranged pots of princess-of-the-night plants, under her supervision. The crane maiden rose from the bench at the edge of the water and followed. As for Flicker, he lingered by the tree, peeking at her back through the leaves. She really was a star, he thought, a shooting star streaking across Heaven far, far above him. She got as far as the circular doorway to the courtyard before she turned. He could only gape as she crossed the garden back to their willow, stopped before him, and inclined her head. “I’m sorry,” she said. At least, that was what his ears heard. His mind refused to process the words. “That was poorly done of me. Would you care to view the princess-of-the-night blossoms with me?” “Uh….” He gawked at her, but she simply waited with that serene smile. He looked at the crane maiden, who nodded encouragingly. He looked back at the Star. He thought about how much trouble he would get into if anyone from the Bureau of Reincarnation heard about this, as they surely would. Then he bowed. “I would be honored, my lady.” /// A/N: Thanks to my awesome Patreon backers, Arif, BananaBobert, Blacklark57, Celia, Charlotte, Hookshyu, James, Jojiro, Lindsey, Michael, Pizzatiger, Sebastian, TheLunaticCo, UndeadCellar, and Anonymous! submitted by adartagnan to redditserials [link] [comments] |
2023.06.02 15:32 Novamarauder American casus belli in anti-Communist WWII
As described
here, ITTL Weimar Germany suppressed the rise of Nazism and stayed democratic, just with a monarchical restoration and various political reforms. It managed to settle all its domestic issues and reasonable territorial claims (Austria, Sudetenland, Danzig, West Prussia, Upper Silesia) to its satisfaction without a general war. The divergence also allowed fascist Italy to fulfill its not-so-destabilizing ambitions (Ethiopia, intervention in Spain, Albania, partition of Yugoslavia) in a similar way. Japan got defeated by the USSR and expelled from Manchuria and China (although it managed to keep Korea and Sakhalin). The shock enabled a moderate regime and foreign policy change.
However, the vacuum created by the lack of the Nazi threat and success in East Asia drove Stalin and the USSR to turn more aggressive. A chain of Soviet aggressions against Japan, Nationalist China, Poland, the Baltic states, Romania, and Finland pushed the European powers and the Japanese to form an anti-Communist united front, then declare war. The USSR answered by staging a pre-emptive strategic offensive in Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and East Asia together with its PRC allies. The USA stayed neutral, at least at the beginning, but pledged to provide all support to the Allies short of war, including a Lend-Lease equivalent. Let's say an American intervention is bound to happen somehow.
However, there is the issue of a proper casus belli that can rouse America to belligerance. Japan is in the Allied coalition, so no equivalent of Pearl Harbor can reasonably happen. I have tried to think of reasonable alternatives:
a) Naval incidents between American merchant shipping and Soviet submarines.
b) Discovery of the Soviet espionage network in America (it seems in the cards with the Western world in a wartime Red Scare atmosphere) and some 9-11-style act of Communist sabotage of the Lend-Lease effort that somehow causes a serious amount of damage and loss of lives.
c) Attempted Commie destabilization (coups, uprisings) of Latin American countries (which ones?).
d) Some mix of the above.
What do you suggest?
Let's assume that due to TTL circumstances, FDR did not seek a third term in 1940 and was succeeded by an anti-Communist Democrat (e.g. Cordell Hull, James Farley, Truman) or less likely an internationalist Republican (e.g. Dewey).

Is this how
iamverysmart works: shoot first and ask questions later? or kill everyone and let God sort everything out? I come to Reddit and pour some deep feelings and thoughts because it is one of the few places where I could, where it fit, where I could improve others and start making a change in the world or show by how it was wrong.
u/Physix_R_Cool posted this because he could not correct me. I almost never get corrected on my comments, many attempts but failures. Everything I write is deliberate. I spend a huge amount of time in dictionaries [of many kronolects and languages] so I know where words come from, what they meant, which were lost, and how the world corrupts them. My reform spelling respects Great Vowel Shift and original languages; I also leave out the Norman yogh in words; you can find the last two spellings in the etýmologhic stems.
So explain the problem and talk about your fears past the "ho ho ho my" and mockery. I was banned from
Physics and
AskPhysics and
Evolution by tyrants who don't care about the truth, and how it's much more important than saving people's feelings. I talk suchly to fulfil a need, a very deep one. As a living being (No, I don't consider myself human, but do consider myself very alive.) I take up and roam through whatever and however much space I'm given and seeing, even if it's inner or madeup space. If I am hindering the needs of others on this website, they have not formerly expressed their needs. They often meet me with rashness and, because they have some power and I have none but my words because I am a forever visitor, they would cut me off in some way rather than talk in kind. Somehow I respect engagers for this, because they make an effort to understand, rather than handwave or run or flagrantly insult. If one could not choose which and whom to respect, and preferred to respect all or none, then one could not properly treat or assign worth, work, and time for the subject, which would hurt one's goals. It's not about waiting for another party to make the first move, but treating as one sees and goes.
How do I define who I am? I am like nobody other in the world now or ever. Most couldn't know what life is like with a IQ over 170, to be different to and fro every age-peer group and to find everyone of every profession and background to be beneath you and beset with lackwitted, mistaken, misspoken, and assbackwards soloicistic trash, scum, and crooks. How almost every statement everyday by everyone in this postEnglish Norman Conquest Commonwealth drives me mad. How I am the only person in the world who knows what is wrong with it and with everything. What makes me better than any random wacko on the internet or on the street is that I can explain specifically what one has done wrong, where this one is even the standard of common sense or custom if only by fiat but not self-scrutiny. To make the world a better stow one must get rid of the trash. I want to incite some riots and revolts besides the dozens of other things. I post on the internet to shut up opposition, who are mainly miseducated.
Something I promise is that if everyone thought and behaved like me, the world would be perfect, someday. This is because I try to take advantage of everything I have to have more, and so I get what I want. Others do not so they're not getting what they want. This group looks like it's divided between people who would choose either fight or flight, but not both. Many on Reddit, admittedly being awkward with people and socialising, prefer not to take advantage of the fact that we are living, reading, and talking beings and so do not fulfil the means to the end by using like for like. As if I were a weed that's grown too much they go behind and cut me out, instead of telling me what they want and fear of me, why, and how, if they can. Their approach has many qualifications. What about nonbilious arrogance, variably correcting, or specifically being? If one does not give the limits, there are none, and whatever one has planted will go and grow forever. And it will have no idea what you say if you say you meant otherwise.
I'm wronged everyday by the rubbish people say and do, and can't stand them. Any preface put in my corrections is a waste of time, obvious to me by the sheer lot I must always do. I have known everything the ilk here were to tell me, and expected such a sorry solution. Civility and polity are a problem, grounded on liges and brainwash. I have many skills, and socialising is one of them. However, I do not use what I should not. Niceness, respect, and generosity must be earned. People do not know that, and blindly treat each other as how they'd like to be treated, rather than how they deserve to be treated. I don't go to social functions because it's a waste of time; I've much better things to do like plot the end of mankind, mores, and the daily lies that plague my experience. I pick who can accept me, and when, because I can. I won't ever identify with such a blind and sweeping label as "socially[-]acceptable." I fully intend to be the reincarnation and revenge of Hypatia of Alexandria and William James Sidis.
And even now, so many refuse to read my appeals. My comments are not to bother but to correct. I do not offend unless I've been offended, more, and nearly everyone offends me. Is it because you lot hate feelings or meanings or anything put eloquently? Do you also not use maps, manuals, or menus and just act on your own? Right now many are lying about me, and threatening the victim rather than the offenders who attack me. Not that I'm not used to being abused like this, by people who have no idea what they do and who don't care.
In any case, I expect neither flames nor thankfulness from my corrections. But I still expect people to imagine something that isn't real from something as unassuming as "it's -> its," from their weak and flaky constitutions. You many should know that what I expect doesn't make it good or bad, or right or wrong, neither does what anyone else expects. People's actions or reactions, no matter how many and many people they come from, are no reasons in and by themselves to establish a standard. If they cannot back themselves up with reason, they have nothing.
I have already thought of everything that all those here have, and they needn't be told to me. As such, I expected everyone to reply as they have and furthermore increase my contempt for the sheer and unending ignorance, meddling, and self-trapping of mankind.

2023.06.02 13:23 Southern-Loan5425 Title
2023.06.02 13:01 House_of_Suns /r/QOTSA Official Band of the Week 22: ZZ TOP
Sometimes a band gets so big that they somehow outshine themselves. They reach a point in their career where it does not matter if they release a new album or not; fans just want to see them tour. No one gave a damn that Led Zeppelin had not released a new album since the 1970’s; everyone just wanted to see them play again at the O2 Arena in 2007. When The Who played the Super Bowl halftime show in 2010 they had only released one new album in 28 years, and no one cared. And no one cares that Guns & Roses aren’t making new music. They still packed arenas to see
how much cake Axl had packed into himself. We’re going to take a dive into a blues power trio from down south who have zero need to release any new music, since their recording career stretches back over five decades. They had amazing and groundbreaking success in the ‘70s, the ‘80s, and the ‘90s before hitting the max level. Instead of playing to win, they now play for fun. Their sexually charged lyrics and videos inspired generations of teens to both dress better and worry about their fly. And you can bet that their fuzzy, bluesy tight sound had a huge impact on our very own desert dwellers.
It’s time for us to take a walk with That Little Ol’ Band from Texas. This week’s featured artist is the legendary
ZZ TOP About Them The Power Trio is a tested and true format for a rock band. Lots of examples come to mind:
Cream. Rush. The Police. Biffy Clyro. King Buffalo. Them Crooked Vultures. (Wait a sec. Just three members? Clearly, not everything is bigger in Texas.)
There is a member joke there somewhere, but I just can’t get it to come. Hmm. Perhaps it will come if you play with it a bit.
Hey!
Stop that. Get your mind out of the gutter.
ZZ Top’s original and founding member was William Frederick Gibbons. Born in Houston in 1949, the front man was originally a drummer but, after studying with Tito Puente in New York City, picked up the guitar at age 13. His dad was a musician in show business, which allowed Billy to get an insider’s view of the industry. By the late ‘60s, he had been in and founded a number of bands and had even befriended the late great James Marshall Hendrix. One of his first bands, a psychedelic/art house band called
The Moving Sidewalks, toured with the Jimi Hendrix Experience. This meant that Gibbons was actually mentored by Snagglepuss himself. They also toured with The Doors, where Gibbons saw the legendary self-destructive band somehow manage to rise above conflict and make music every night. The Moving Sidewalks generated a following all of its own with a couple of hit songs, and things seemed to be headed in the right direction.
Things were going absolutely great until bassist Don Summers and keyboard player Tom Moore were drafted into the army to fight in Vietnam. Don't you just
love the ‘60s? Gibbons and drummer Dan Mitchell added a new keyboard player, Lanier Greg, and tried to make another run at it. But the chemistry was all wrong. Gibbons rechristened the band as ZZ Top (an homage to BB King), and declared that he wanted more of a straight up rock approach than the
art-house kaleidoscopic sound. Gibbons, Mitchell, and Greg (isn’t it weird when
last names are also first names too?) recorded the single
Salt Lick in 1969. This generated a bunch of interest and a recording contract. Decisions over the direction of the band ensued and it quickly became clear that Mitchell and Greg did not agree with Gibbons’ hard rock approach. That ended up being a poor life decision for them, but a great one for a couple of other guys.
Clearly, Gibbons needed a new rhythm section.
Fortunately, he found a package deal.
Dusty Hill and Frank Beard - also both born in 1949 - had been playing together on the Dallas-Houston-Fort Worth circuit in a number of bands, including
The Warlocks, The Cellar Dwellers, and a fake cover band called
The Zombies. Both the Duster and the (then ironically) beardless Beard also heard the siren call of rock and roll. Hill was classically trained and was an accomplished cello player before moving to his signature bass. Frank ‘Rube’ Beard appears to have been born with drumsticks in his hands (which I imagine might have been uncomfortable for his mom).
Beard joined the band first, along with bassist Billy Ethridge, who had played with Stevie Ray Vaughn. Ethridge balked at signing a contract and so joined Mitchell and Greg on the list of ZZ Top’s former members. Their lineup was set. Hill and Beard anchored the band in a rock-solid, tight, bluesy fashion. Gibbons meshed perfectly with this duo, and his Hendrix-inspired guitar work was on another level. Hill provided backing vocals, and Gibbons’ low throaty growl was an impressive counterpoint to his soaring fretwork. The talent was all there; now they just needed to record some music.
But success was not instantaneous, not by a
long shot. Their first album - appropriately called
ZZ Top’s First Album - gives insight into who the band were to become. In this 1971 release, you can hear their raw sound. The record peaked at 201 on the charts, and had only one single -
(Somebody Else Been) Shaking Your Tree. It did give them material to go out and tour. The boys gelled on that tour and went back into the studio with renewed energy, and emerged with 1972’s
Rio Grande Mud. The disc was a step forward in refining their sound. The album almost cracked the top 100, and the only single -
Francine - went all the way to number 69.
Nice. But the band knew that their third album,
Tres Hombres, was something special. It is the epitome of Southern Rock: bluesy, fast paced, sexy, and irreverent, it is just over half an hour of pure magic. And while the album went gold and peaked at number 8 on the charts and is worth your time, it was one particular single that rocketed them to stardom. You know it and you love it, and a-how-how-how-how:
La Grange. It is still in heavy rotation on classic rock stations today. And why not? The song is an
absolute banger of boogie woogie blues, written about a visit to a whorehouse. What’s not to love?
La Grange propelled them to popularity. Tours sold out. Venues got bigger and bigger. 1975’s follow up album,
Fandango!, was half live album (with some covers) and half new material - like an EP with bonus tracks. They covered the Elvis Presley classic
Jailhouse Rock, Willie Dixon’s
Mellow Down Easy, and John Lee Hooker’s
Long Distance Boogie. The boys had rock and blues chops, and had 5 years of touring experience. These were bold statements that cemented their musicality as well as honoring their roots. But side two of the disc had another track that you’ve come to love. You ain’t asking for much: You’re just lookin’ for some
Tush. Tush was the perfect sexually charged follow up to ensure that they were not one-hit wonders. It was written in a ten-minute spasm of creativity at a sound check, and has gone on to be one of their most popular songs.
While
Tush topped the charts, ZZ Top went back into the studio to record their full length follow up, 1976’s
Tejas. The name of the album means ‘friends’ in the Indigenous Caddo language, and was the basis for the name of the state. You know what that means? It means that the name of the state is ‘Friends’. Just like the ‘90s sitcom.
Don’t mess with Friends. Anyways, this was an album of experimentation for the band, and unlike its predecessor it came out half baked at best. Billy Gibbons has called it a transition album. What actually happened is the band transitioned into a hiatus from touring and recording, taking some significant time off. They had recorded five albums in six years and spent virtually all their time on the road. The latest effort was just not up to their standards and was a step back. It also completed their recording contract.
What was the solution to this burn out?
Facial hair of course.
The boys took a few years off before landing another recording contract, this time with Warner. Over those months, both Gibbons and Hill grew what would become their signature long
‘Texas Goatee’ beards. Frank Beard did not grow a beard (though he did finally succumb to peer pressure from his bandmates in 2013, and his is much more neatly trimmed). So while they were resting/relaxing/getting their groove back/aligning their chakras or whatever, they also started to reinvent their signature sound as the world moved towards a decade of legendary excess.
The first step on this reinvention journey was 1979’s
Degüello. The title literally means ‘decapitation’ but idiomatically refers to a
fight to the death. Clearly, the band decided to tackle their transition head on. The album was not as successful as
Tres Hombres or
Fandango!, but it was not the flop that
Tejas was. It did spawn a couple of singles -
I Thank You (which was a cover) and the signature hit
Cheap Sunglasses. Both are staples at ZZ Top concerts to this day.
Degüello was quickly followed up in 1981 by the album
El Loco. This was really the first time ZZ Top incorporated a synthesizer into their sound. As you know, the synth was THE new wave sound of the 1980s. Gods help us,
keytars were once popular. But Gibbons, Hill, and Beard did not abandon their edge. The single
Pearl Necklace was an immensely popular innuendo laced tune from this album. And no, I will not explain what a pearl necklace is to you.
Ask your mom.
Over the course of their first seven albums, ZZ Top had steadily grown in popularity and become a truly extraordinary live band. More than a decade of touring together meant that they had not just cut their teeth. They had found the
Tooth Fairy, beaten her senseless, and added fangs to their jaws. They were ready to tackle whatever came their way.
Their huge breakthrough coincided with the birth of
music videos and MTV. 1983’s
Eliminator was an absolute monster of an album. ZZ Top were everywhere. They completely embraced the Music Video as a medium and became pioneers in this new genre. They branded their band with a
1933 fire-engine red Ford Coupe, which was on the cover of the album. They even had a signature hand gesture that they used as the car went by. The car belonged to Billy Gibbons and embodied his hot rod obsessions. It was featured in the videos for
Gimme All Your Lovin’, Sharp Dressed Man, and
Legs. Other singles from the album included
Got me Under Pressure and
TV Dinners. Eliminator is still the band’s most successful album. They were at the absolute height of their popularity with a massive audience. No doubt the 10-year-old Joshua Michael Homme watched those videos on a small screen in the California desert, little knowing that he would one day collaborate with Gibbons.
Seeking to capitalize on the popularity, the band went back into the studio and released
Afterburner in 1985. It featured the signature hot rod on the cover and spawned two more singles -
Sleeping Bag and
Velcro Fly. Afterburner was not an innovative album by any stretch of the imagination. It simply built on the success of
Eliminator and replicated the sound.
If you blended the two albums together it would be very difficult for a novice fan to guess which song came from which disc. But hell, when you release the most popular album of your career and are earning millions of dollars for that sound, it is not time to mess with success. Or with
Texas. Or with Friends (though
Ross was a pain in the ass, IMHO).
That desire to not screw up a good thing was also evident in their next release, the retrospective re-release
Six Pack. This was a great way to earn some bucks with a simple repackaging of existing tracks - I’m looking at you,
K-Tel… - and introducing them to another generation of fans. This was not a bad thing at all - you gotta get that green whenever you can, because fame can be fleeting.
ZZ Top closed out the decade by going Back to the Future. Literally. They appeared in the third installment of the Michael J. Fox trilogy
as the olde-timey house band (complete with rotating guitars) in the saloon scene. The single and signature song from the movie,
Doubleback, appeared on their 1990 release
Recycler. The album spawned two more singles:
My Head’s in Mississippi and
Concrete and Steel. Recycler was not as successful as its predecessors, but it did effectively
max level the band. In the 1970’s they were a scuffling bar band that hit it big. In the 1980’s they were one of the most popular bands of the MTV generation. And in the 1990’s they achieved superstardom. They had hit the level where it truly no longer mattered if they ever released new material again. They could simply tour on their back catalogue alone and sell out stadiums.
It is clear that the band realized this as well. In the thirty years since
Recycler came out, they have released five albums of new material:
Antenna in 1994,
Rhythmeen in 1996,
XXX in 1999,
Mescalero in 2003 and the critically acclaimed and
Rick Rubin produced
La Futura in 2012. This was equivalent to their output in their first six years.
In contrast, they have released no less than eight greatest hits albums, cover albums and live albums in the same time span.
Greatest Hits came out in 1992.
One Foot in the Blues was released in 1994. The massive compilation
Chrome, Smoke & BBQ came out in 2003, and is a fantastic place to start if you are a new fan.
Rancho Texicano was released in 2004,
Live from Texas came out in 2008, and
Double Down Live hit shelves in 2009.
Live at Montreaux came out in 2013 and
Tonite at Midnight: Live Greatest Hits from Around the World was released in 2016.
As recently as 2019, there were rumors that a new album was in the works for our Septuagenarian heroes. Lord knows the boys from Texas have nothing left to prove to anyone.
It was then that tragedy struck. Dusty Hill had to leave the band during a tour in 2021. The reason given was a hip injury. His guitar tech, Elwood Francis, filled in. Shockingly, Hill died at home at the age of 72 just five days after leaving the tour.
Fans were shocked and mourned the stalwart bassist. Per his wishes - and it seems he knew something wasn’t quite right - ZZ Top did not break up. Francis replaced Hill on bass, and the band soldiered on. In 2022, they released
Raw, a soundtrack for a 2019 documentary about them. This was Hill’s final release.
You can still catch them on tour. They are going to be out there this summer, touring with Lynyrd Skynyrd, for something they are calling ‘The Sharp Dressed Simple Man’ Tour.
Go buy some tickets. Don’t miss your chance to see a truly iconic band before they are gone.
Links to QOTSA The
Reverend Billy F. Gibbons was a big part of the
Lullabies to Paralyze album by our Desert Dwellers. He played guitar and provided backing vocals on
Burn the Witch. He was co-lead vocalist and lead guitar on the QotSA cover of
Precious and Grace, which he originally released as a ZZ Top tune on the
Tres Hombres album. He also provided the guitar stylings for
Like a Drug. But the connections don't stop there. Billy sang the lead vocal track on the recent Desert Sessions tune
Move Together, and he played guitar on
Noses in Roses, Forever. What may be most important to QotSA fans is that Gibbons was the first person, almost two years ago, who hinted that Queens were working on a new album.
And now we know he was right. Never doubt a Reverend.

2023.06.02 12:26 carotenefox The tide against WFH is turning and the pressure seems to be building up
Sir James Dyson thinks the UK's plans to allow employees to continue working from home are "staggeringly self-defeating." Kevin Ellis, the UK PwC chairman said that
AI will kill off the WFH culture.
In the UK there is a quite a lot of pressure to work at the office and there are very few jobs that are fully remote. Generally very few jobs are fully remote,
although half of government workers are remote but they get paid substantially less than the private sector.
The economic situtation in the UK is causing people to be nervous. I know people that got made redundant (laid off) in the last couple of weeks. I am expecting my company to push for 5 days in the office from the 3 days they currently expect. I am not someone that is a fan of fully remote, but I would hate not being hybrid and would prefer 2 days a week in the office and 3 at home. Later in life I do want fully remote so that I can live a digital nomad life as my kids will have left home.
Are you also experiencing a lot of pressure to return to the office and are you finding less jobs are fully remote? What's going on in your part of the world?

2023.06.02 11:53 narrator_uncredited Thoughts and questions after watching LN and listening to Telephone Stories
Just to get it out of the way at the start, I believe his victims and that Jackson did all of it. Over the years I've been curious about the child sexual abuse cases against him, and made the major error of relying on Wikipedia, which I now realized is biased in his favor. It really is hard to wrap my head around, so there's a tiny part of me telling me it can't be possible, but it's just plainly clear.
My head is sort of spinning from all the evidence and supposed rebuttals, and I have so many questions and thoughts swirling around. Please excuse me for any incorrect info, I'll correct it. Thank you to anyone who actually reads this, haha.
- The glass closet: This is an LGBTQ term referring to people who don't explicitly come out but where their orientation/identity is an open secret, like that aunt who shares a bedroom with her best friend. I'm not old enough to remember how publicly known it was that he was spending so much time with specific kids, but it seems that at least in his private life, he openly acted as these guys were actual romantic relationships and "dated" them by taking them to events. Was his goal to normalize it and have it be an open secret, or was he making any effort to conceal the extent of the relationships? The report from the World Music Awards really makes it seem like he did not give a flying fuck about being caught.
- The Jehovah's Witnesses link: Wondering what information there is out there on this. From my basic understanding, there are multiple elements in JW that lead to child abuse being swept under the rug. Could Jackson have targeted JW kids knowing that it would be easier to cover up?
- None of the five victims that we know of has recanted. They would have to all be pretty cold, brilliant sociopaths to never crack. According to Jackson in the Bashir doc, "very few" boys have shared his bed. So out of just those we know were long-term abusive relationships, we have Wade Robson, Jordan Chandler, and James Safechuck saying he abused them. Macaulay Culkin, Brett Barnes, and Omer Bhatti (I think?) totally deny it. And Jonathan Spence has stayed quiet. That is a pretty wild ratio. Guess Jackson was just really unlucky in his choice of special friends.
- "And we'd wake up at dawn, and we'd go in the hot air balloon": This line from Living with MJ shows him trying to act like an amazed child. It's so transparent that I'm both embarrassed the world fell for it, and disgusted.
- Gavin's and Jackson's fingerprints on the same magazine. The idea that Gavin and Star found the magazine that belonged to Jackson on their own suggests that it was easily accessible and isn't much of a defense -- leaving adult material in a place kids can easily access sounds like grooming behavior to me, even if he didn't directly give it to Gavin (which he did, of course).
- The wine in the soda cans: Regardless of whether he shared the wine, it's a massive red flag that he's trying to hide the fact that he's drinking alcohol from children while spending time with them. Children in my family are perfectly aware that adults drink wine and they can't. Why hide it?
- I've heard the damning book had an inscription in it that proved it wasn't part of the library bought together with the house (which, lol). Is this true?
- So, the working-class and middle-class victims and witnesses are supposedly all money-grubbing sociopaths, who decided to go against a very powerful figure with the best legal team money can buy. If the Jackson family is altruistic, why are they still trying to make as much money as possible from him posthumously, including suing his estate? Are his kids going to lack for money? Are they just money-grubbers?
- Did the estate's lawsuit against HBO get resolved?
- Why did Katherine Jackson recently file a motion to keep documents sealed because of "sensitive information regarding Ms. Jackson’s family and private life,” when they're about a posthumous deal to sell some of his catalog?
- Did Jackson, the Jackson family, or the Jackson estate ever do anything to help victims of child abuse, sexual or otherwise?
- The penis description is compelling. I find it hard to believe Jordan Chandler would be specific about markings if he were simply inventing it. He could have claimed that he he didn't remember or that Jackson kept his underwear on.
Phew. Thanks for making it to the end.

2023.06.02 11:49 B0kkie Bro released a whole ass spiderman album
2023.06.02 10:41 dwredbaker O the riches of sovereign grace! O the wonders of redeeming love!
(
James Smith, "The Way of Salvation Set Forth")
"Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is
a new creature, the old things are passed away; behold, new things have come!" 2 Corinthians 5:17
He who is saved from the
guilt of sin, is also saved from the
power of sin.
Man by nature is "under sin." "The whole world lies in wickedness." Sin like a
tyrant, has usurped authority, and man yields to its imperious demands. Sin reigns in his heart, and over every faculty he possesses. He knows nothing of
liberty, but is the
slave of corruption. He lives "in the lusts of the flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and is by nature a child of wrath even as others!" (Ephesians 2:3) Man by nature is . . . influenced by corrupt motives, ruled by evil principles, led captive by carnal passions, and lives under the
power of sin! The sinner feels his
bondage, as well as his
guilt, and struggles for
liberty, as well as seeks for
pardon.
Salvation is a deliverance from the
power of sin, and removes us from under its
authority; so that it may be said of every saved person, "Sin shall not have
dominion over you, for you are not under the law, but under grace." Romans 6:14
The Holy Spirit . . . imparts a principle of spiritual life, applies the Word of God with power, and takes up His residence in the soul.
When the gospel of grace is unfolded to the
understanding, and applied to the
heart by the Spirit,
the entire man is changed! His
hard heart is softened, his
stubborn will yields, his
carnal affections rise above earthly things, his
conscience now agrees with God, and he is "changed into the image of Jesus, from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord." 2 Corinthians 3:18
Sin will still
struggle, but it cannot
reign. Sin may for a time prevail, but it will be subdued. The
conflict may be severe, and it will last through life, but sin shall not regain the
throne, or reduce the Christian to a state of
slavery again. The gracious principles implanted within him are immortal, they are holy, they must overcome at length!
Through the Spirit, the believer mortifies the sinful deeds of the body, that he may live. (Romans 8:13) Being Christ's, he crucifies the flesh with its affections and lusts. (Galatians 5:24) And while he
walks in, or under the
influence of the Spirit, he does not fulfill the lusts of the flesh. (Galatians 5:16) Sin has no
authority over him, for . . . he has
renounced it, he daily
mourns over it, he
confesses it before God, he
strives against it, and he longs for Heaven, because there he shall be entirely free from sin!
He who is saved from the guilt and power of sin, is also delivered from the
love of sin. Sin is no longer his element, his business, his pleasure. He
did love sin once, as does everyone in a state of nature. The unbeliever may not love
every species of sin, but . . . some
favorite sin, his
darling sin, his
idol, which he worships, which he wishes to have spared.
But salvation delivers from the love of
every sin, and sets the heart on striving for universal holiness. True, it is possible for a regenerate person for a time, to find his affections running out after a forbidden object, or what is grossly evil. But it will soon be
detected,
confessed before God, and
mourned over in secret. The renewed heart cannot
habitually love sin, but must hate it. Sin is hated . . . because God hates it, because it is opposed to our best interests, because it crucified the Son of God, because it grieves the Holy Spirit, and because it is contrary to the new nature of the Christian.
As soon may the
bird love to be confined under water, or the
fish prefer the the barren wilderness to its native element, as for a true believer
habitually to love sin. No, he hates it, he hates it naturally, constantly, and with an unconquerable hatred!
His
views are changed, and he thinks of sin in some degree as God thinks of it!
His
desires are changed, and he desires to cleanse himself from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of the Lord. 2 Corinthians 7:1
His
hopes are changed, so that though he once hoped for worldly wealth, honor and pleasure, he now hopes to be forever delivered from sin, and be exactly
like, and eternally
with his precious Savior!
He fears sin, and nothing so much as sin! He finds pleasure in holiness, and no such pleasure in anything else! He is pained at sin, and nothing causes him so much grief and sorrow!
This is indeed salvation, to be
delivered . . . from the guilt of sin, with its attendant horrors and punishments; from the power of sin, with its consequent degradation; and from the love of sin, which is the principal feature in the image of Satan!
He who is thus saved, is delivered also from all the penal consequences of sin. To him there is no
curse, for Christ was made a curse for him. To him there is no
wrath, for God is at peace with him, and loves him with an everlasting love. To him there is no
future punishment, for he is justified from every charge, and entitled to everlasting life!
He deserved Hell for his sins, but he is saved from it by his Redeemer's sacrifice and death!
O the riches of sovereign grace! O the wonders of redeeming love! submitted by

2023.06.02 10:29 reddithenry 2022 Canon La Gaffeliere
£391/6
"Blackberries and blueberries with chalkboard and dark earth aromas. Flowers, too. Lead pencil. Full-bodied and very deep in the palate, which is reserved and texturally sophisticated. Chalky, too. Silky and very polished. 80% merlot and 20% cabernet franc. From organically grown grapes."
97-98 points, James Suckling
“The 2022 Canon La Gaffelière is bright, punchy and full of character. Blood orange, rose petal and spice overtones brighten a core of red/purplish fruit in Saint-Émilion that impresses with its saline intensity, energy and focus. If tasting this blind, I would never say it is a wine from a warm, drought year. It will be interesting to see if the 2022 retains its youthful vibrancy through élevage. This is super promising.”
94-96 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous
“A blend of 50% Merlot, 35% Cabernet Franc and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2022 Canon la Gaffelière exhibits aromas of raspberries and plums, complemented by notions of iris, rose petals, incense and burning embers. Medium to full-bodied, ample and fleshy, it's supple, suave and sophisticated, with a lively core of fruit, powdery tannins and a long, saline finish.”
94-96 points, William Kelley, Wine Advocate
Seems a decent increase on back vintages, I was looking forward to this wine as the scores arent bad. I'm not decided yet.

2023.06.02 09:54 autobuzzfeedbot "She Was So Rude, My Family Is No Longer Allowed To Listen To Her Music": 34 Of The Absolute Best And Worst Celebrities People Have Ever Met
- ABSOLUTE DREAM: "I’ve met Harry Styles several times, and he is so nice and considerate. He actually put off going out with his team just to sit and talk to my 15-year-old daughter and me. I’m sure he was exhausted, but he seemed to enjoy relaxing and chatting with us. My daughter will most likely live on that memory for years to come!"
- ABSOLUTE DREAM: "Jennifer Aniston is a sweetheart. She seemed very genuine and kind. I met her in a restaurant bathroom of all places. We talked for so long, her friend had to come and find her."
- ABSOLUTE DREAM: "I met Lorne Michaels when I worked at a 5-star restaurant. Everyone who worked with me knew I’d been a fan of SNL since I came out of the womb, so when I picked up the phone to make the reservation and spoke with his assistant, I told them I was Lorne's biggest fan. When he arrived with his wife and son (who went to a local boarding school), they were so kind, and he said, 'Oh, I heard you’re my biggest fan, and that’s amazing because I don’t have fans — the cast always has fans!' I almost died. I gave them my favorite table, which they were thrilled with, and when he got up to leave, he left me an envelope with a pretty sweet bonus tip inside. I wasn’t usually tipped doing my work, so it wasn’t necessary, but it was so thoughtful and appreciated. All three were true gems. You’d never know he was famous or rich at all."
- TOTAL NIGHTMARE: "I met Roseanne Barr for work once. I went to shake her hand, and she looked me up and down and said, 'I don't shake hands,' then walked away."
- ABSOLUTE DREAM: "I met Matthew Gray Gubler after he did a talk years ago at my college! Only the first 100 people who got tickets were supposed to be able to do a meet and greet. He said 'rules were made to be broken' and that he would stay and meet with everyone until they kicked him out. Not only was he incredibly sweet to me (literally introduced himself...so humble and posed for a goofy pic), but he seemed so genuinely kind to everyone there. Just amazing energy all around."
- ABSOLUTE DREAM: "A friend and I visited my boyfriend while he was doing security at a jazz festival in Malibu. He told us Adam Sandler and his family had been there all day and tons of people took pictures with him. We ran back to the car to grab the digital camera, looked up, and saw Adam, his pregnant wife Jackie, and their toddler leaving. We went up to them. Adam was clearly done for the day, but his wife said, 'Honey, let me hold [toddler's name] and you can take a picture.' We handed him the camera and he took a selfie with us. Still have that picture on my fridge. Love the Sandman!"
- TOTAL NIGHTMARE: "My little cousin played one of Rob Schneider's kids in 50 First Dates. Rob was stuck-up, never got to know the children or their parents, and always went straight to his dressing room. I'm an introvert, so I like my alone time to recharge, but apparently the vibes he was giving off were that he couldn't be bothered to care about anyone else there. Also, the little girl in the movie was apparently a spoiled brat who threw tantrums and made them have to redo so many takes. I can see why Rob maybe didn't want to play with her, but the other kids were great!"
- ABSOLUTE DREAM: "My husband met Rihanna years ago and said she was super nice. He was working as a ground handler at an airport and was setting up something on the ramp for her private plane. She came out, approached him, asked him about his job, and they chatted for a few minutes. Not sure if she was killing time until the gate opened, or if she went out of her way to talk to him for the heck of it, but he had nothing but nice things to say about her."
- ABSOLUTE DREAM: "I met Jerry Springer while bartending almost 20 years ago. He was thinking of getting back into politics and had a meeting in our private dining room on the second floor. It was happy hour and the bar was packed. Someone spotted him and started chanting, 'JERRY, JERRY,' while he was about to walk up the stairs. He then came to the bar, ordered a $2 beer, walked through the entire bar, shook hands, and took pictures. When he finished the loop, he set the full beer on the bar and handed me $40. Regardless of his show, I will always think of him as a class act."
- ABSOLUTE DREAM: "My story is that I was actually horrible to a celebrity. In the '70s, I was obsessed with Donny and Marie. They were playing at our state fair that year. My dad tried to get tickets, but it was sold out. He took us to the fair anyway. A few times we could hear the music, which infuriated me at 7 years old. When we were leaving, my dad had to stop the car because there was a big crowd of people. As they cleared to let us through, two people popped their heads in the car window to apologize. It was Donny and Marie. I refused to believe it was really them, and I told Marie, 'You're not Marie. She's a lot prettier than you.' My family was horrified."
- ABSOLUTE DREAM: "Hands down nicest celebrity I've ever met was Taylor Swift. I met her at a concert as part of her security at the Houston shows. She was polite and introduced herself to everyone. She was obviously very busy, but she seemed interested in what I had to say and signed an album cover for my son."
- ABSOLUTE DREAM: "I have been lucky enough to meet Sir Ian McKellen twice: once after a performance where I also met Simon Callow and Patrick Stewart, and once during his tour of 80 shows for turning 80. Absolutely lovely man. He is my #1 dream dinner guest. I wish I was his friend."
- ABSOLUTE DREAM: "I did a photo-op last year at my local con with Ewan McGregor and, even though it was so quick, he was super sweet. We shook hands, and he asked how my day was. He’s gorgeous in person!"
- ABSOLUTE DREAM: "I met Matthew Lewis at a local con at his booth and he was lovely (and gorgeous in person). I told him how jealous my Harry Potter-obsessed sister (who was working that day) was going to be, and he told me to tell her he sent his regards! It totally made her day at work when I texted her about it after!"
- ABSOLUTE DREAM: "I met Pink around 2000. She performed at a teen club I was at, and she was a sweetheart. After her performance, she even danced with us for a little bit."
- TOTAL NIGHTMARE: "I’ve heard nothing but bad things from people who've met Bill Nye. One friend said he was at some children’s art show and made fun of the artwork in front of the youngsters. What a jerk."
- ABSOLUTE DREAM: "When I was in college in Boston, I was making a late-night Taco Bell run. As I was walking in, this white limo pulled up in front. I went inside and placed my order, and a guy in a white jumpsuit with a white bandana tied around his head came in. There weren't that many people in the restaurant, but he stopped and signed autographs and was chatting everyone up when I left. It wasn't until a few years later that I realized that person was Steven Tyler. This was in the late '80s before Aerosmith had that string of hits."
- ABSOLUTE DREAM: "The most genuine interaction I've ever had with a celeb was with Bert Kreischer. I saw a show (during which he mentioned his grandma was in the hospital). Then, he told the audience he would be going to the bar next door after the show if anyone wanted a picture. When he arrived at the bar, he waded through CROWDS of people and made sure everyone who wanted to was able to get a pic or a moment with him. I stayed at the bar for a drink until he was on his way out (by this time the crowd had dispersed). I called out as he passed, 'Hey, I didn't get a chance to say it before, but I hope your grandma does well.' He stopped, turned around, and had a very genuine conversation with me."
- ABSOLUTE DREAM: "Jason Momoa was really fun to meet in person when I saw him at a Nine Inch Nails show. Really fun guy!"
- ABSOLUTE DREAM: "Jennifer Lopez. I went to where they were filming Air last year (I live in LA) because I wanted to meet Ben Affleck. I met Matt Damon as he wrapped before he left. He was a SUPER nice guy. I waited for Ben as his Escalade pulled up, but I DID NOT expect JLO to get out. She got out right next to me. She was only with her driver and he didn’t tell me to move or anything, so when she got out, I was like ‘Jen! Can I get a picture?' and she said sure. We talked about Selena because I’m Latina and she’s super important to me, and the movie means so much to me. She was SOO nice and sweet. She didn’t give any vibes that I was annoying her or that she had to Go. We also spoke in Spanish. We took our picture and then she went inside to get Ben. When they got out, Ben was NOT HAPPY (I don’t blame him. He was acting and directing), so I just stepped aside."
- ABSOLUTE DREAM: "In 2004, I met Tony Curtis. He exuded 'old Hollywood.' He made his way around the room, speaking to each person, and when he approached me, he extended his hand and held my hand through the entire conversation. He focused on our conversation as if there was no one else in the room. As we said goodbye (he was still holding my hand), he raised my hand to his lips and kissed it. He was dressed impeccably and was in fine form. I have had many celebrity encounters, but nothing rises to the level of Tony Curtis. Absolutely the best celebrity encounter I've ever had."
- ABSOLUTE DREAM: "I met Sir Patrick Stewart at the Peabody Hotel in Orlando. We were both hanging out with friends in the lobby. He told stories, made lots of jokes with his friends, and included us in the conversation."
- ABSOLUTE DREAM: "I went to college with Muhammad Ali's twin daughters. He came with them for move-in day, and they arrived in a chauffeured Rolls Royce. He was gracious and took as many pictures and signed as many autographs as people wanted. I even have a picture where he is pretending to punch me. I told him that I grew up down the street from the house he had in Chicago before he donated it to the Nation of Islam. He asked me if they were good neighbors and laughed when I told him not really."
- TOTAL NIGHTMARE: "My sister met Katy Perry at a restaurant, but she was being rude to the bartender and all the employees who came over to help, so now my niece and nephew aren't allowed to listen to her music."
- ABSOLUTE DREAM: "I met Tori Amos, and she was an absolute sweetie pie. She hugged me and told me she liked my shirt. We spoke briefly. I was starstruck, but it made a lasting impression on me."
- ABSOLUTE DREAM: "I grew up in a tiny town (pop. 3,000), and every year for his twins' birthday dinner, Michael J. Fox would bring his whole family to the restaurant my mom worked at. She almost always ended up being their server and she said he (and his family) were the nicest people. They were unobtrusive, friendly, and excellent tippers."
- ABSOLUTE DREAM: "James Earl Jones was super sweet. My father and I met him when I was young. His voice is deep, but sweet!"
- ABSOLUTE DREAM: "I met Dennis Quaid, and he was the nicest guy ever. We chatted about dogs for a while, and he was more than happy to take a few pictures!"
- TOTAL NIGHTMARE: "I helped host a book signing for Bobby Flay, and he's a jerk."
- ABSOLUTE DREAM: "Every time Dave Matthews plays at the venue across the street from our bookstore, people want to be working in the cafe because he randomly shows up for coffee the morning of his concert and gives the people waiting on him free tickets."
- ABSOLUTE DREAM: "Nicest celebrity I've ever met was Cole Sprouse. This was way before when he probably got sick of being on Riverdale and decided to just show his true colors. He took the photo of us together because I was shaking from nerves and excitement."
- ABSOLUTE DREAM: "I was a bartender at the Troubadour for five years and have so many stories! Jeff Bridges was the first celeb I met. His band was playing. Before we opened, after his sound check, he made a point of coming down to us bartenders to introduce himself and thank us for helping out that night. SUCH A GEM!"
- ABSOLUTE DREAM: "Jason Schwartzman came into the bar I worked in on a night that had a bunch of teenage bands playing and was super sweet to any of the kids who came up to him."
- ABSOLUTE DREAM: "When I was young, I went to an Olivia Newton-John concert. I grew up watching Grease on repeat and had always loved her. At the concert, me and another young girl were invited on stage to give her flowers and introduce ourselves. On stage, l asked to get her autograph and she told me she would after the show. Post-concert, I waited with my family to get an autograph and she invited me and my dad into her fitting room and no one else. Once back there, I was so starstruck and amazed that she remembered my name! She was so kind and took pictures with me and my dad, signed a photo, gave me the set list, and wrapped it up by giving me a hug and kiss on the cheek. She spent probably an hour with us just hanging out in her room and chatting. To this day, it's one of my most cherished memories."

2023.06.02 09:17 Ambitious-Ad-5844 Dartmouth Supplemental Essay Help
1)Labor leader and civil rights activist Dolores Huerta recommended a life of purpose. "We must use our lives to make the world a better place to live, not just to acquire things," she said. "That is what we are put on the earth for." In what ways do you hope to make--or are you making-an impact?
2) "Not everything that is faced can be changed; but nothing can be changed until it is faced," wrote James Baldwin. How does this quote apply to your life experiences?
Hello the great people of
CollegeEssays! I’m applying ED to Dartmouth this year and I want to stay ahead and try to somewhat easy my tasks and prepare for it early. I’ll be having a few important exams ahead and I don’t wanna slack off right now. So, I thought it would be better to start working on my Dartmouth essays from now.
The aforementioned prompts are what I think I can write most about. My CommonApp essay is about me overcoming the death of my grandfather and how he had an essential role in my life ( very cliché I know but it’s just that important to me ) and how I’m pretty interested in business. If I go with the Baldwin prompt, I can expand the business part of my narrative with how I took initiatives during COVID that helped my family or if we with the first prompt, I can write about what I want to do for the community through the same application of my interest.
I would greatly appreciate If anyone can simplify for me how to approach them, or suggest me ideas to write my supplementals about. Thank you very much for taking the time to help.

2023.06.02 08:55 Unfair_Argument_9047 Current Teen's Thoughts on 1979
Warning - long post.
Hi everyone. My name's Sean and I'm currently 17 turning 18 at the end of November, and I've been listening to SP since I was 11-12. My parents were big fans back in the 90s.
I want to start by saying that until recently, 1979 wasnt a song I listened to that much as I prefer their heavier stuff like Quiet or Jellybelly. Also, I never really thought that heavily about the lyrics or meanings of the songs, as I've been mostly interested in learning the guitar parts and Billy's equipment.
However, I recently started looking more into the song after it came up on my YouTube feed a while back. The first thing I noticed was that the kids in the video actually looked like well... kids, and come to find out the actors in the car were actually all 15-16 according to Billy in this making of video here:
https://youtu.be/FWZx4ZEKFzk I can't think of anything recent that doesn't use 20/30 somethings to play characters around my age. Shows like Euphoria have so much sex and drugs it makes 50 Shades of Gray look G rated, so it can't happen there. By comparison, the kids in the 1979 video seem so much more relatable to me despite taking place over 25 years ago (or in the late 70s), both in their appearance and actions. They just all seemed so happy.
The second thing that hit me was when I was reading Billy's interviews about the song. The video started making sense when I read it was about Billy's own adolescence and him looking back on it. I've honestly been feeling uncomfortable since my last birthday knowing my own adolescence will be coming to an end soon. In addition, I've been struggling with my sexuality since 13 and it kind of came to a head when my gay friend (now first bf!) admitted he had feelings for me last winter.
I won't go into details but around March I was in a pretty bad place over all this. I've never been good at dating girls (or boys) and have avoided most social situations with my peers outside track stuff. I let stupid comments online make me think I was some kind of deviant/pervert/weirdo for being how I am.
After I started getting help, this song came on the radio when I was driving back from school and it hit me rather quick - why the hell am I pissing away this last year and a half before I graduate over some bullshit comments on Reddit or Twitter?
I eventually made things up with my friend and asked him out last week. He and I crammed into a teammate's old BMW with 2 other kids, and we spent half of last Sunday driving around an island near where we live. No TP'd buildings or trashed stores, but it was probably one of the best experiences I've had in a while. Thank you Billy, James, Darcy, and Jimmy. 🙂
