my neighbors are preppy, yuppy pieces of sh*t. they have the requisite 2.5 kids, fancy big house, and, as of june 2022, added a purebred bernese mountain puppy they spent a couple thousand bucks on, from a breeder. shortly after getting the puppy, they had a company come over who installed an invisible fence around their yuppy property. i didn’t pay much notice of them or their bratty, spoiled little kids (who roam around their property acting feral, much of the time). but, being a huge dog lover, i DID take notice of how they were taking care of their puppy…or, rather, how they WEREN’T taking care of him. their front lawn was strewn with toys for their dog, from big soft stuffed toys to massive rawhide bones. at first i thought that, aw, they love their puppy and are doting on him. but it soon became apparent that they were just throwing the toys outside for him so they wouldn’t have to pay attention to him. they never bring him inside to be with his family. when their kids get off the school bus, the dog runs up to them, CRAVING love and attention, and the kids just kick him in the chest and go in the house, leaving him desolate and alone again. when winter set in (a harsh, ny state winter) the dog was left outside constantly. no dog house. no straw bedding. nothing. he was and IS outside ALL THE TIME. these bastards get around the law by keeping their (north-facing) garage door open all day and all night. the garage is his “shelter” and he either lays outside in the snow, or on the icy driveway, or on the cold concrete garage floor. our area has had a succession of days and nights of sub-zero temps with howling winds (north winds, blowing into their north-facing open garage). i have talked to them on a few occasions. i have been polite. i have appealed to them to take him inside. i have shamed them that dogs—even bernese mountain dogs—can get frostbite on their paws and noses and after hours out in the cold they are susceptible to hypothermia. they admitted to me that they are DOCTORS, which i shamed them about to their faces even more, that they OF ALL people should know better than to neglect a poor dog. but they don’t care. after my attempts to appeal to their consciences failed, i contacted our local anti-cruelty dog enforcers, but they basically told me, “the garage is considered ‘shelter’ and we can’t do anything unless ‘more serious infractions’ occur.” which is a load of total bs. other neighbors have noticed the dog’s situation and have tried to show some sort of kindness to that poor lonely dog. but, there doesn’t seem to be much any of us can do to help the dog who’s basically a PRISONER, who can’t run away because he understands too well that he’ll get ZAPPED by the invisible fence collar they keep on his neck. it is a cruel situation and i don’t know what to do. it’s heartbreaking.

Hello! I have a 2 year old cattle dog and an almost 5 year old border collie. It took me about 1 year to get the border collie to be accepting of the cattle dog - now they’re buds!!
Back in July of 2022 I took in a stray special needs cat (over grooming/allergies/serious hot spots) and she’s basically been in a cone since as she causes serious damage to her leg. She’s about 6 years old according to the vet.
The cattle dog has been around small animals before, and he never acts aggressive towards them but more curious I’d say. Same with the border collie. I have no issues with the border collie and cat.
However, the cattle dog does try to go after the cat. I’ve kept their interactions minimal as the cat had a long road of recovery due to severe hot spots. The cat is free to roam the house during the day and at night, but when the dogs are out, she has her own room as the designated cat room.
I want to work towards getting all the animals together, but due to the aggression I’m wondering if this is achievable. We have not worked extensively on getting them together due to the cats health issues I now have under control.
Does anyone have any tips or a success story for a similar situation? The cattle dog has lunged at the cat a few times (while in crate/on leash) he also tends to hyper-fixate on the cat but he is extremely good motivated and I can get him to easily break the habit with regular dog food. I have a Tortise shell, X (6F) and a domestic longhair, Y (2F), and my fiancé and I took in a rescue in November 2022 Z (6month m at time of adoption). At first, we gated our entire basement off to give the cats room to chill alone, and Z would sit at the baby gate. Y sits on the top step, and Z can see her through the gate and banister. He jumped towards her and barked, but in a playful, not aggressive way. We adopted Y during the pandemic so she’s still quite skittish, even around strangers, but has overall been very curious about the puppy.
We sent Z to training and he does well with the “leave it” command for the most part, and is overall much more calm that he was pre-training. He is now close to 11 months, and still sometimes jumps at the cats if they sit on the steps, but Y has gone from curious to aggressive with Z. She will still come upstairs and into the room he’s in and approach him if he’s sleeping (running at any sudden movement or sound) but is also hiding under the bed now as well. She has swatted at him a few times and Z will give her a good distance if he notices her under the bed, but will lay down and bark/ not move around her. She has progressed from running to hissing, growling, and attacking, going as far as to stalk towards him in a few instances.
Tonight, Z was in the bed with me and Y was under it. He dropped his toy and was looking down, when he suddenly jerked back and I heard hissing and growling from under the bed. I made the mistake of attempting to move her out of the room entirely and ended up with several scratches/ bites as a result (dumb on my part which I fully recognize). Given his size, I haven’t let them just figure it out themselves as I worry he will hurt her if forced to fight back.
X and Z don’t interact much- he will sit and stare at her if she’s on the stairs, and she will stare back, but she doesn’t venture past the gate and stays in her own area. X is the one we were worried about in the first place, as she typically hates other animals and it took her almost 8 months to warm up to Y.
I really don’t want to have to rehome any of them, but I’m starting to worry there is no light at the end of the tunnel. All I can find so far is dogs attacking cats, not the other way around so Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!!
