Introduction:

I'm writing this tutorial to accommodate beginners and experienced users alike. If you would like to skip the introductory part and get right to the point, just look for the chapter entitled “My list of the best Plex Server devices”.
Next, I ask the subreddit admins not to remove this post and move it to the Builds megatread; have mercy.
Note: further down the line, I will refer to Plex Media Server as Plex Server and Plex Client Apps as Plex Client(s).

Plex Server vs Plex Client Overview:

When we talk about Plex, we cannot talk about the Plex Server without also talking about the Plex Clients. Both sides are equally important. However, they serve different purposes.

To illustrate, if you install Plex Media Server on your home computer, and then install the Plex app on your smartphone, you could stream movies stored on your computer to your smartphone. The computer with the server software would be considered the Plex Server, and the smartphone with the app would be the Plex Client. The Plex Server does the heavy lifting (like file conversion) so the Plex Client(s) can have an optimized viewing or listening experience.
To summarize, when we talk about Plex Clients, we are primarily talking about price and supported video/audio codecs (formats). The logic here is that the more expensive the client, the more audio/video codecs it supports.On the other hand, when we talk about the Plex servers, we talk primarily about price and performance (power).
Similar to Plex Clients, the more expensive the Plex Server, the more powerful it will typically be. This relationship is not always straight forward and we will talk more about this later.

Simple Plex Setup

The simplest Plex setup would be one Plex Server and one Plex client.
The simplest Plex setup is also a perfect Plex setup. If you only have one Plex Client, you can customize your audio/video media to perfectly match the codec(s) supported by that Plex Client. In such a setup, Plex Server will never need to do any transcoding because Plex Client will also play fully supported media formats.
If your Plex server is never used for transcoding, then a Raspberry Pi can also be used as a good Plex server.
If this is the case, why is hardly anyone talking about using Raspberry Pi as a Plex Server at all? Because what I call a simple and perfect Plex setup is just wishful thinking. We, end users, we always connect more then one Plex Client.

Realistic Plex Setup

A more realistic setup may include many different Plex Clients, like Plex Web Client, Plex TV Client, Plex Mobile/Table Client, and more frequently, Plex clients for the streaming box devices.
Now remember, even if your current Plex Client device fully supports your media content, if you add another Plex Client device, it may or may not have the same codec (video/audio) support. Thus you may encounter the need for transcoding. This is no longer a simply process and devices like Raspberyy Pi will not be able to handle transcoding tasks.
This is the root of our problem and the main reason for this article. You should expect that some of your media files will require transcoding, and for video transcoding you need a machine capable enough of handling this process. More importantly, you want a machine that can hardware transcode your content, which means your Plex Server must have a dedicated hardware transcoding component. Likewise, there's a software transcoding process that requires pure CPU power, but you would be lucky to get 1-2 4K transcoding streams with modern Intel i7 or i9 CPUs. We want to avoid software transcoding, as hardware transcoding can do much more for a fraction of the power of software transcoding. For example, a 10th generation Intel i7 CPU can handle one 4K software transcoding task or 10+ 4K hardware transcoding tasks; that’s a huge difference.
And before anyone comments, yes, we could make sure we only stream video/audio files that are fully (mostly) supported by all Plex Clients, but that would limit us in size, quality, and most importantly, the time it takes to make sure all the files meet the exact video/audio requirements.

Understanding Plex Server Requirements

Okay, so we've got a good handle on the importance of Plex Servers, what Plex HW transcoding is and why it's important. But now you might be asking, 'What do I need to make sure my Plex server can handle all this HW transcoding business?' Great question! Let's dive into that.Remember, your Plex server is the heart of your Plex ecosystem. It's where all your media lives, and it's the place that's doing all the hard work when it comes to streaming to your devices.When it comes to Plex server requirements, there are four main things to consider: CPU, GPU, power consumption, and storage.

Keep in mind that this is my list, and as such it is completely subjective. If you know of another device, mention it in the comments and I may add it to this list. Even better if you elaborate your view.
Note: Below links do not hold any tracking numbers or references.

Intel NUC mini PCs are often favored as Plex servers for several reasons. First, they offer relatively high-performance processors and support for more RAM compared to less expensive mini PCs like Beelink, allowing for smoother streaming and transcoding on Plex. Second, the build quality and reliability of Intel NUCs are generally regarded as superior. Third, Intel NUCs have good support for various operating systems, including those commonly used for servers. While other mini PCs can be cheaper, they may not offer the same level of performance and compatibility, which can affect the smooth running of a Plex server.
Intel Nuc 11 NUC11ATKC4 - $208 (11th gen Celeron N5105 with 8GB DDR4 and 256GB SSD)
Intel Nuc NUC11PAHi5 - $449 (11th gen i5 with 16GB DDR4 and 512 SSD)

To put it bluntly, when compared to Intel NUC, Beelink or MINISFORUM Mini PCs provide a similar performance at a potentially lower price point, yet still somewhat superior in quality to other cheap mini PCs from China. I'm a little split on recommending these devices; while I've never had any problems, I know some people who have. Personally I would go with Intel NUC just based on its reliability, but cheaper is cheaper.Last piece of advice, both Beelink or Minisforum come with pretty mediocre SSDs/NVMEs and RAM, and it's better (and even cheaper) to buy everything separately (barebone).

Any Dell Optiplex with at least 7th gen Intel CPU. I can say that many users often choose Dell Optiplex computers due to their robustness, reliability, and most important affordability. They come with a variety of configurations that can be customized to suit the needs of a Plex server, such as good processing power, ample memory, and storage. Additionally, their size makes them a practical choice for Plex.

Intel-based NAS devices are also preferred as good Plex servers for several reasons. You get all-in-one package with power-efficient 4K HW transcoding, built-in storage, and Linux-based OS.
Synology DS423 - $370 (Intel J4125 Celeron with 2GB DDR4)
Synology DS920 - Deprecated but still a fan-favorite. DS923+ switched to AMD-based CPU without iGPU so it should not be considered as a Plex Server.
QNAP TS-464 - $589 (Intel N5105 Celeron + 11th gen iGPU with 8GB DDR4)

While custom-made desktop PCs are not my favorite option, I cannot justify not giving them a shout out here. Yes, they are big, noisy, and power hungry, but when it comes down to it, they can serve as a Plex server just as well as any mini PC. Just make sure you’re either running at least Intel 7th gen CPU (although some modern AMD CPUs will also do) or older CPU paired with at least Nvidia RTX 1050 GPU or newer.
Here's a benchmark for Nvidia GPU transcoding capabilities.

Mac has always been known to handle Plex Server very well.Older Intel-based Mac Minis are on the same level as Mini PCs, so what applies to Mini PCs also applies to Intel-based Mac Minis.On the other hand, even though M1 and M2 Macs are Arm-based, they offer excellent value for HW transcoding tasks. Both M1 and M2 are overkill for a Plex server and the only reason they are not higher on this chart is their price.

Just not using my PC enough to warrant keeping it. Everything is in perfect working condition, there is some scratching on the metal side of the case but that is always against the wall for me. GPU has only ever been used for (pretty light) gaming, never mining.

Hidden inside the nearby mountain lies The Bunker, forgotten and made up of a central room whose linear space will bring intense, short-range, close-quarters combat. Anti-tank Grenade
A bundle of grenades that will detonate on impact against vehicles while dealing substantial damage.
Mini Grenade
An anti-personnel grenade that can be thrown a longer distance, and after a short delay explodes across a small area.
Spring Grenade
An old familiar projectile behavior as seen before in the form of the S-Mine or Bouncing Betty. It operates through a spring-activated thruster to reach head-height altitude before imminent explosive detonation.
RPG-7V2
Veterans of the franchise will be familiar with this much loved gadget, and we’ve heard your requests to bring this boomstick through to All-Out Warfare from Battlefield Portal. With Season 5, you’ll now have access to use this fan favorite gadget however you see fit!

Quality of Life Improvements

Vault Weapon Attachments & Universal Cosmetics

We will be adapting Vault Weapons for use with All-Out Warfare attachments during Season 5. To start, we’ll focus on Assault Rifles and Sniper Rifles with attachments for the M16A3, A-91, M416, MTAR-21, AEK-971 and the GOL Sniper Magnum. We’ll continue to provide attachment support for Vault Weapons in subsequent updates.

With Season 5, we will also be introducing Universal Cosmetics for all Vault Weapons, from Forest Multi-terrain (Unlocked at Rank 0) to Desert Technical (Unlocked at Rank 19) and more. You’ll now be able to decide not only the attachments and versatility of your Vault Weapons, but the look of them too. We’ll also be extending Universal Cosmetic support to Battlefield Portal!

Reworking Vehicle Loadouts

We’re restructuring vehicle loadouts to ensure their combat roles are clearly defined and to reduce prevalence of explosive weaponry. This will also add further readability on the battlefield to ensure you know what to expect from vehicles when you encounter them.
The restructuring of loadouts primarily focuses on our ground vehicles, and we’ll both remove and add weapons to each available vehicle loadout. For example, explosives will no longer be an option for all vehicles, and overall you’ll find more choice through a larger selection of weapons available to you.
Let’s use the LATV4 Recon as an example of what that looks like.
The LATV4 Recon is one of the most used vehicles in the game, and having explosive weaponry readily available pushed it outside of its intended role as a transport. We’re removing all its explosives, such as the 30mm, 50mm and Grenade Launcher, and will replace them with anti-infantry weaponry instead.

Specialist Improvements

Dozer and Irish will receive improvements to ensure they provide similar gameplay experiences as others within their class.
Dozer
For Dozer we will be enhancing his movement and animations when using the SOB-8 Ballistic Shield. You will now be able to strafe, rotate and pitch with your shield more quickly than previously, as well as being able to traverse ziplines with your shield equipped! Lastly, we’ll also be including two new XP Events to reward further acts of teamplay when playing with Dozer.

On the receiving end when firing at his shield, we will be increasing its spread and introducing more bullet trajectory upon hitting his shield. This will ensure that during these encounters you still have a fighting chance, and at the very least, won’t be as impacted by your own bullets as before.

Irish Irish will receive a balancing pass to the capabilities of his APS-36 Shootdown Sentinel. We’re doing that by having it cycle through new intercept and recharge states alongside an added short cooldown, versus its previous always-on state.

Squad Management Improvements

Alongside the Season update we’re also adding improvements to the current Squad functionality.

Squads and Players
The Squad Menu is now separated to give you a full overview of all squads on your team. In this menu you can make someone else the leader, and see how many players or friends are in a squad. It also shows class icons so you know how to best complement a squad before joining it. And to add some personal flavor, leaders can also show off their Player Card Tag as the squad icon.
We also worked with the narrative team to come up with code names for each squad for that additional personal touch. One of our personal favorites is Gravedigger -- surely the Gravediggers know how to PTFO. We definitely don’t mess with that squad!
Create and Join
At any time you’ll be able to create or join a new squad directly via the Squad Menu. Previously you could only switch to a random squad, and only from the deploy screen. If you create a new squad then we’ve also added a short waiting period before other players can matchmake into your squad to ensure you can play together with your friends.
Easy navigation
The Squad Menu was created to make it easier and faster to manage and navigate through squads on your team. While before it was unclear when and how to change squads, you’ll now be able to do that at any time and with only a few clicks.
We hope that with this new improved Squad Management experience you feel that you have the control over who you’d like to play with during a match. Once this is in your hands, please stay in touch and give us your feedback about how you feel about it!
Later during Season 5 we’ll also add Squad Orders functionality which allows you to work together as a squad to receive increased XP rewards. In short, PTFO - and get rewarded!

Other Areas of Improvement

Damage Unit Functionality
As part of Season 5, you will now be able to decide if you wish to show damage units at the bottom of your screen, at the side of your crosshair, or not at all. This new functionality can be defined to your liking via Options > Display > HUD General > Damage Numbers.
Accuracy & Dispersion Changes
Since Launch, our Level Design team has been reworking our maps to react to feedback on cover opportunities, and traversal improvements. These changes have also resulted in alterations to combat distances, and our weapons were tuned for these previous distances and combat scenarios in mind.
Over time, this has resulted in feedback from you about several weapons being too accurate at long ranges without penalty.
With Season 5, we aim to address this gap with balancing the accuracy and dispersion of several categories of weapons. Assault Rifles from All-Out Warfare and their Vault Weapon counterparts will be the first to receive this treatment.
You will notice that the maximum dispersion has been increased by an average of 15-20%, and the weapons will now reach that maximum dispersion level when they reach half of the magazine while on full auto, and full spray mode!
This should encourage everyone to do smaller bursts instead of prolonged fire towards a moving target, and in consideration with the map rework should increase survivability at longer ranges to encourage further up close and personal combat.
We will be assessing your feedback to this change over time and continue to make necessary changes in future updates.
New Unlock Requirements for Lis, Crawford, Zain and Blasco
Lis, Crawford, Zain and Blasco will now be available as rewards as you gradually gain Player Levels through earning XP. Their previous unlock requirements are no longer available. Go get ‘em!
Camera Sprint Movement
We have made adjustments to the Camera Movement when sprinting in Battlefield 2042.
This change is meant to add physicality to sprinting by introducing more immersive camera movement dependent upon the type of weapon and sprint type that you may be using at that time. You will notice a different amount when using an Assault Rifle compared to an RPG for example.
We hope you enjoy this new sense of weight and body motion through the camera. For accessibility you may turn off the new motion in the accessibility options.
On top of that, there are also some golden rules to camera motion in FPS games that ensure your understanding of where you are in space, aligned with what the camera tells you, and we have taken the opportunity to improve that further by focusing on rotations rather than translations in space.

Aim Down Sight Field of View is now active for all players.
Normally a scope will adjust your field of view. With this option set to “On”, the field of view will instead be taken from the field of view you chose in general, in your display settings. Some weapons will not be affected if they have specifically been designed to have a certain field of view that should not be changed.
Why is this important?
The amount of input it takes for your aim to move across screen space changes when field of view changes. Uniform Soldier Aiming calculates your aim rate to take the same amount of pixel distance on screen for a given physical movement of the mouse.
In 4.2 we set Uniform Soldier Aiming to On by default (see our Dev Note for further detail). Setting ADS field of view to On, ensures the consistency achieved by Uniform Soldier Aiming remains the same across various scopes since your field of view will not change when zooming.
Like Uniform Soldier Aiming, this will help to build muscle memory, which is essential to aiming in first person shooters.

  • Fixed an issue where a MCOM in Rush could get stuck in a defuse state if an AI Soldier gets removed while trying to defuse the bomb.
  • Fixed issues that resulted in AI Soldiers not trying to avoid some grenades. Don’t ask.
  • AI Soldiers will no longer keep moving and firing at the End of Round. They’ll just have to accept that the round is over and there will be another one.
  • AI Soldiers will now be able to enter vehicles directly from using a parachute.
  • Fixed an issue that would cause the player to be pushed away from bushes when proning near them.
  • Made improvements in ensuring the parachute cannot be deployed on smaller jumps between platforms.
Battlefield Portal
  • Breakthrough is now available within Battlefield Portal. You will be able to create Custom Experiences for Breakthrough and Breakthrough Small via the Web Builder. Due to the complexities of Breakthrough, Custom Scripting will not be available for this mode.
  • Fixed an issue that allowed Irish to use his APS Shootdown Sentinel when it was restricted.
  • Fixed an issue that caused the Taser Baton melee weapon to incorrectly appear in the Battlefield 3 category.
  • Fixed various placeholder names and icons for weapons in the restricted 2042 attachment category.
  • The RM68 will now have the correct icon when setting up a Portal experience.
  • Attachments belonging to Vault Weapons are now present in the Attachment tab via the Web Builder.
  • Adjusted turret speed of the M1A2 from Bad Company 2 and Tiger 1 from Battlefield 1942 to be compatible with aim decouple from body option.
Specialists & Gadgets
  • RPG-7V2 has received a balance pass to be more in line with All-Out Warfare Game Modes and State of Play.
  • A tutorial video for the FGM-148 Javelin and XM370A are now present within the Collection Screen.
  • The Collection Screen video for the FXM-33 AA Missile now shows the lock-on prompt as intended.
  • The Collection Screen will now display the correct magazine names.
  • Updated IBA Armor Plate's Gadget Description to mention that it only protects the torso.
  • Deployable Gadgets are now destroyed after a territory control change on Breakthrough or Rush.

Dev Comment: This change has been made so that each grenade will now have a set detonation timer, increasing the readability as opposed to a chain reaction style of play. Players will still be able to shoot a grenade with bullets.
  • The Penguins have been working hard on their research of the Incendiary Grenade and have found a breakthrough that allowed them to increase the radius by 15%. Toasty.
Concussion Grenade
All Recon Specialists will now be able to use the Concussion Grenade.
We have also made substantial changes to how the Concussion Grenade works in a couple of areas, based on distance to the player and in comparing the direction of the player upon grenade detonation.
The effects of the Concussion Grenade are defined by Near, Far and Frontal scenarios. When it detonates within close range it will heighten the duration and intensity at the point of detonation. Beyond that near range, it will lead to a lessened duration and intensity. This effect is also decided and impacted by if the detonation takes place in front of the player.
  • Near radius has been increased from 6m to 8m
    • Total radius remains unaffected at 12m.
  • Increased the angle acceptance in order to be considered a frontal concussion from 60 degrees to 70 degrees.
  • Duration at which Concussion Grenade lasts has been increased in the following conditions:
    • Near + Frontal Facing from 2s to 2.5s
    • Far + Frontal Facing from 1.5s to 1.75
    • Near + Side from 0.75s to 1.2s
Prox Sensors
Through telemetry and community sentiment, since moving the Prox Sensor out of the throwable slot and into the Gadget Selection field we have seen this gadget decline in relevance compared to the TUGs and other viable gadgets. We have made some adjustments to allow for the Prox Sensor to be an equally viable choice as part of your loadout.
  • Increased the number of Prox Sensors that can be carried from 1 to 2
  • Increased the number of Prox Sensors that can be deployed at once from 1 to 2
  • Reduced the radius of the Prox Sensors scan from 20m to 15m, which will offset some of the benefits of these adjustments.
Angel
  • Fixed an issue that prevented the Tracer Dart from being able to resupply from Angel's loadout crate.
Blasco
  • The Area of Effect for Blasco’s Signal Jammer will no longer tilt when the Gadget is on a slope.
  • Enemies disrupted by Blasco's Signal Jammer will no longer stop revealing their position when the affected player shoots their weapon.
  • Blasco’s Signal Jammer will no longer protect itself from spotting.
Dev Comment: We have made this change to help players in locating Blasco’s X6 Infiltration Device, allowing for a better understanding of where to find the device that is blocking their spots.
Casper
  • Enemy or friendly players can no longer climb upon Casper's drone and fly with it.
  • Added thermal vision to Casper's OVP-Recon Drone when zooming in.
Dozer
  • Dozer's deploying shield animation will now correctly play immediately after throwing a grenade.
  • Dozer's shield will now correctly play a fling/push away animation in 1st person view when being hit by a rocket, missile or tank shell.
  • Fixed an issue that allowed Dozer to jump for an unlimited amount of time while his shield was equipped.
  • Dozer's Shield bash sound is now played when hitting enemies at the edge of the melee range.
  • Dozer's shield can now destroy the Medical Crate, T-UGS, Anti-Tank Mine, Ammo Crate, C5 Explosive, M18 Claymore, Prox Sensor, and Loadout Crate.
  • Fixed an issue which would cause deflected bullets from Dozer's shield to not damage enemy players.
  • Fixed an issue that would cause incorrect animations between first and third perspectives with Dozer.
  • Fixed an issue where Dozer would be unable to switch weapons when in a prone state while switching from Shield to a Melee Weapon.

  • Falck's Syrette Pistol projectiles no longer deal damage to Dozer when they hit his Ballistic Shield.
  • Falck's Syrette Pistol will now begin to replenish ammo when the reserve is missing ammo (akin to Zain's XM370A), as opposed to waiting for an entire magazine to be missing.
Irish
  • Fixed an issue that caused the explosion of the Shootdown Sentinel to unintentionally interact with the EOD Bot and remove player input from controlling it.
  • Irish’s Deployable Cover will no longer damage players when it is destroyed.
  • Shootdown Sentinel State tweaks and louder pre-explosion on sticky
Sundance
  • Sundance's Anti-Armor Grenade has been removed from the game.
Dev Comment: Sundance’s Anti-Armor Grenade had poor readability which would result in vehicle players being unable to detect between an incoming missile or an Anti-Armor Grenade. Which resulted in being unable to react suitably with countermeasures. Going forward, the only time you will see “Incoming Missile” alerts is when it is actually an incoming missile.
Zain
  • Fixed an issue that would prevent players from setting the Airburst range on the XM370A for specific structures.
  • XM370A's Range Number will now display the correct distance when looking through smoke.

Progression
  • Fixed issue where earning T1 Mastery on the Defibrillator did not reward the "Jack of All Trades" Achievement/Trophy.
  • Adjusted Pilot Kill XP to only be rewarded when the victim's air vehicle did not also get destroyed at the same time.
  • Avenger and Savior Kills now include who you avenged or saved in the XP log.
Hazard Zone
  • Fixed an issue that prevented the Javelin from being purchasable in Hazard Zone.
Vehicles
  • Removed yaw aim restriction from the LCAA Hovercraft, you can now rotate 360 degrees on the second seat.
  • Fixed an issue with EMKV90-TOR’s zoom level not working properly on higher FOVs
  • Active Protection Systems will now intercept Incendiary Grenades as intended.
  • The Active Protection Systems light signal is now working as intended on all graphical settings.

EBAA Wildcat

LATV4 Recon
  • Removed: 50mm Cannon, 30mm Cannon & Grenade Launcher
  • Added: Canister Shot, Minigun with Thermal vision, HMG with Thermal vision & 20mm Flak
LCAA Hovercraft
  • Removed: TOW Missile from the passenger seat with these changes, to ensure that it further aligns this vehicle into its combat role. We feel that despite this item being skill based, a hovercraft should not have access to such a deadly item.
  • Added: LMG with Thermal vision, Minigun with Thermal Vision & HMG with Thermal vision

Hello popheads, or at least the 80 of you who actively do rates, and welcome to the Alt Club Girls Rate. Now you may be wondering "King, what is alt club?" and my answer to you is: I don't know. Alt Club is kind of just a genre I made up!! But club and dance music obviously has an extensive history and it covers a whole range of sounds, and these albums all solidly fit under that umbrella. One thing (for me) that unites these albums, other than being three of my favourites from 2022, is their maximalism: Sudan, Kilo and Shygirl are all mixed media artists who have a clear creative vision for their work and these albums and eras are what they created when they were free of any societal or genre confinement.
Another thing the three of them having common is being black artists in alternative spaces, and how that reflects itself in their music. I think highlighting that they are black does a lot for representation and allowing people to see themselves in these genres, but on the flipside seeing someone only as a 'black artist' can be limiting, and these projects expertly break free of those labels and restrictions. These albums dance from genre to genre like they're going through themed rooms in a nightclub, and I'm so excited for everyone who loves them to get a chance to talk about them, and everyone who is unfamiliar to fall in love with them!

One of the primary themes of Natural Brown Prom Queen is homecoming; Sudan (who now lives in LA) is originally from Cincinatti, Ohio (area code #513), and spends a lot of the album tackling the idea of feeling at home or belonging and the restlessness of feeling in between two places. On the albums lead single Home Maker she sings about how she makes her apartment and home studio feel more homely, and compares it to feeling at home with someone you love. In fact, this album was entirely crafted in that home studio over lockdown, with Sudan self producing almost the whole thing. The project is much more electronic than her previous album (the earthy Athena) but is still rooted very firmly in the same sentiments and style, and of course the same brilliant violin work that Sudan is known for woven throughout.
Another thread across the album is Sudan saying things that people are afraid to say, or doing things she might not be supposed to. Milk Me gets outrageously horny, with Sudan singing "your finger up my pussy like a honey stick" over such ethereal production that the subject matter might slip right by you. Sudan tackles her identity as a black women throughout, writing about the colorism she faces being darkskin, or about how her hair ties into her self-worth and other's perception of her on Selfish Soul. Ultimately this album is a lot about her reinventing her image and putting her blackness at the forefront.

If I were to sum Kilo up as an artist in one word it would be chameleon. Each body of work Kilo's put out, whether it be music, fashion or art, has been an evolution, but not along one linear path. AMERICAN GURL isn't her finale, it's just a representation of where she is at now. The album is the embodiement of a candy store or an arcade, where the album's narrative takes place, sickeningly sweet synthy chaos with deceptively dark lyrical themes of consumerism and tackling what it means to be American looming underneath. On the albums' title track she sings "In a locked box, in a locked draw, will I find me an American Girl", immediately jumping into the idea that as a black artist she doesn't identify with the idea of an 'american girl' that is presented to us, instead that her own american girl is locked up inside of her. On my personal favourite bonus track Star Power, Kilo tackles fame and trying to make it in LA, and how endless that feels. Kilo ponders the idea that in such a capatlist world we consume so many different things, when you strip that all away, what of that actually is you?
The album couldn't be more of a 180 from her debut album six years prior, Reflections in Real Time, an alternative r&b and indie album that is equal parts manifesto and intimate diary. Where in her previous work she opted for minimalism, now is the time for all out maximalism. The use of bright, campy consumerism and Americanism allows Kilo to reflect on fears that are both unanimous and extremely personal: Am I pretty enough? Am I good enough? Why can't I do what somebody else is doing?

Nymph is actually a very different debut from Shygirl than what we could've got - she more or less made a record over lockdown, in a similar vein to her fan favourite ep ALIAS, but felt like it was too easy. "If I don't give myself that space to myself, no one is! No one's gonna expect me to do anything else." and thank god she did give herself that challenge, because Nymph is the perfect evolution of Shygirl's character and sound. Taking strong influence from 00's garage and r&b, tracks like the lead Firefly bring the sound into the 2020's with added hyperpop flourishes. Much like Sudan and Kilo, Shygirl is very much a sole visionary, but she has a star studded team of producers behind her to help bring her vision to life consisting of Bloodpop, Danny L Harle, Mura Masa and longtime collaborator and friend Sega Bodega. Album opener Woe is a haunting telling of fame and expectations, with Shygirl singing "When will you see it from my side?". I actually saw Shygirl at the tail end of last year at Printworks in London, which if you're unfamiliar, was a sweaty, gay warehouse used for all kinds of raves and gigs, and I truly can't imagine a setting where Shygirl's music is better suited.
Shygirl also is on a mission to reclaim her own body from everyday misogyny, with Coochie (a bedtime story) being a playful, nursery rhyme esque track about women's bodies and battling the idea that they are weird or undesirable. But of course the overarching theme and imagery of the album is that of a woodland nymph, inspired by romanticism work like Thomas Hardy's Tess of the D’Urbervilles. Nymph as a record is not an attempt to rebrand Shygirl's image, but add depth to it - she can be a provocative, industrial rapper just as well as she can be an ethereal, sensitive artist, and there's no need to limit herself to one or the other.

Review:
The classic Platformer, Super Mario Bros. (not to be confused with Mario Bros.), was originally released on the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1985, and would later go on to be ported to almost every major Nintendo platform in some form or another. The game received a port to Arcades as well in 1986, though this wasn’t exactly the same game that we received on home consoles. Rather, VS. Super Mario Bros. was a slightly-altered version of the classic game, with changes made to the game to add in greater difficulty.
These changes are fairly minor - a few power-up blocks have been changed or removed, some stages have been swapped around, and more challenging versions of stages appear in place of the earlier ones. I won’t go into a detailed list. Suffice it to say that this is almost exactly the same game as the classic Super Mario Bros. we all have seen countless times before, save for a few differences sprinkled throughout the game.
For those who have somehow missed the original Super Mario Bros., that is one impressive rock you’ve been hiding under. However, for the sake of being comprehensive, this game is a classic of the Platforming genre, and one that virtually all Platformers since owe much of their existence to. Without this game, there very likely would be no Sonic, no Crash Bandicoot, no Spyro, no Castlevania, no Mega Man... in fact, there may very well be no Nintendo, at least as we know it today. What's more, after the Atari Crash of 1983, the videogame industry as a whole simply would not exist as it does now if not for the rejuvenating effect that this game had on the entire medium. Super Mario Bros. is, without question, one of the most important videogames ever made, if not the most important videogame ever made.
This is not just due to being one of the first games in the genre, nor for being a quality game at a time when the videogame industry really needed a winner to revive the market, nor for innovating design in countless areas from screen scrolling to power-up systems. The original Super Mario Bros. still holds up surprisingly well even today, though of course it pales next to more modern entries in the series. The game design here is superb, the physics are excellent (though still rough compared to later Mario games), the pixel art visuals are iconic, the game’s chiptune themes are some of the most memorable tunes ever seen in a videogame. Even to this day, Super Mario Bros. is still one of the greatest videogames ever made, even if it has been eclipsed by its later sequels.
This release of the game, as a part of Hamster Corporation’s Arcade Archives series, gives players a decent array of options, including various display options, sound options, challenge modifiers, button mapping, and online leaderboards. There is also a new “Hi-Score Mode” (for the aforementioned leaderboards), that challenges players to make as many points as they can on one life. There is also a new “Caravan Mode” that does much the same, but with the limit being five minutes rather than one life.
So there are only two remaining elephants in the room to discuss. First: Is this game worth its $8 price tag? And second, is it worth buying if you already subscribe to Nintendo Switch Online, which includes a version of this game on its Nintendo Entertainment System app. To be perfectly honest... no, I don’t think so, at least not for most people. The changes to the “VS” version of the game aren’t enough to really set this game apart and make it feel like a different game, but they are enough to frustrate the muscle memory of players who are used to the NES version of the game. What’s more, in prior Virtual Console releases of this game, the price was set at $5, making the $8 price tag here seem like gouging. Finally, with the NES version of the game already on Nintendo Switch Online, the only reason to buy this game is if you aren’t subscribed to that service, or prefer to own outright the classic games on your Switch, and don’t mind that this isn’t quite the version of the game you may be familiar with... or if you’re a collector or completionist who only wants this game as a fun little curiosity rather than an actual game.
Either way, despite being mostly the same game as one of the greatest videogames of all time, it’s hard for me to give this release a full-hearted recommendation. Arcade Archives VS Super Mario Bros.is a decent enough port of the Arcade game it’s based on, but that game is a frustratingly-altered port of the classic Platformer it is based on, and the combination of a high price tag and the original version of the game being available on Nintendo Switch Online remove most of the reason anyone would buy this.
tl;dr – Super Mario Bros. is an absolute classic Platformer, and VS. Super Mario Bros. is a version of the game that’s altered just enough to be frustrating without changing enough to make it feel truly new. On top of this, the price seems too steep, especially with the NES version of Super Mario Bros. being easily accessible on Nintendo Switch Online’s NES app. As a result, while this is still a great game, it’s a game that almost no one will find worth buying.

I have some knives that need new homes to clear out space for others. Obviously see the descriptions, but these LNIB bangers could be yours if you feel like shaking loose some cash. Onto the goods.
 
DIVO MASH V2
This is an unavailable configuration of the Divo Mash V2 in 14C28N. I picked this and another to specifically make this config. It is factory new other than the scale swap. It's been properly cleaned and lubed with KPL original. No adjustments, no cutting and no carry. In fact, it's only been flipped a handful of times.
I tuned my black one and I just prefer it, so there's no sense in keeping two. The blade did come with a horizontal micro-scratch on the lock side. It is way more noticeable on video than in person. SV $125
 
CMB DARMA
This is the CMB Darma in M390, titanium and aluminum carbon fiber. I'm the first owner and it has only been an occasional fidget toy and still has plenty of breaking in to do. That said, action is damn good and there are many deployment methods. Edge is factory and it has not been used to cut, carried or disassembled. Comes with factory box etc.
Get this LNIB fidget toy that's also a very good knife for SV $175
 
PMP Spartan XL:
This is the PMP Spartan XL in micarta and N690. These are absolute beasts and I was not expecting it to run as good as it does. It front flips amazing for any knife, let alone a big girl like this. Very comfortable in hand, plenty of blade for any task and is perfectly happy just being a large fidget toy. I have only played with it sparingly, but I'm getting rid of most of my big knives. LNIB and comes with factory case. SV $110
 
James Brand Chapter:
This is the James Brand Chapter in S35VN and DLC handle. This guy was picked up straight from JB and is in LNIB shape. It's been flipped a bit but it's just not my thing even though it is quite high quality. I just prefer more opening methods. Everything is like new and includes original box and factory included stuff. SV $195
 
Trevor Burger Customs Urban XL
I would say this needs no introduction, but people are sleeping on these big time. This is the Urban XL in fat carbon weave/titanium and M390.
This has darkened titanium hardware and a gorgeous hand rubbed satin blade. Detent is snappy and the carbon show side makes this guy super light. This is perfect in every way and the action is superb. Don't forget that these deploy with a reverse flick off the blade due to the great hollow grind. No carry, disassembly or cutting. Comes with pouch and COA. Step up to the best front flipper in the game. Coming straight out of South Africa for SV $695

Synopsis

Paratroopers! New paratrooper squads land in Normandy, where previously their class was only available as premium squads. Get two squads from the U.S. and Germany, which in the future will be detached from the campaigns and become available for the mentioned countries.
In the "Reinforcements received" events, you’ll upgrade your army with unique and well-armed squads, rare weapons, vehicles and always-useful items. Main rewards will help you unlock content that normally takes more time to reach in a regular lineup.

Enlisted keeps adding soldiers to the new game class, the paratroopers. This time into Normandy. They already carry their automatic weapons with them to the drop zone and, of course, have a supply box with equipment for every situation, exclusively available to paratroopers. She’s the only contender this round to finish with more than 73 points and cracked more than 100 too. Watch out Blanche! D is our 3rd leaderboard winner in 3 rounds! How are the current top 15 looking after Round 3?
First of all, 11 of these names have all stayed on the leaderboard since Round 2, returning for Round 3! They are: Deirdre, Liz, Eva, Becky, Karen, Blanche, Fred, Jason, Hayley, Kylie, and Lloyd!
Karen and Fred only finally came into their own in Round 2, but Deirdre, Liz, Eva, Becky, Blanche, Jason, Hayley, Kylie, and Lloyd have never ever fell off any leaderboards yet so as we head into the Semis, you should keep a eye on these 9, who stand a really good chance of making the Final, but especially Liz, Eva, and Jason, these 3 have just got better and better since Round 1, despite scores worsening for them all in Round 3, they haven’t ever dropped down the board!
Interestingly enough, we also have some returning names on the leaderboard this round which hasn’t happened yet! Rosie Webster, Schmeichel the Great Dane, and Mike Baldwin have all gone back on the leaderboard. All 3 of them were able to reach the Round 1 leaderboard, in 3rd, 16th, and 12th respectively, but in Round 2 they failed to rejoin. Now with the Semi finals just hours away from kick off, their timing couldn’t have been better, as all 3 are back on the leaderboard in Round 3, and they mean business! Mike has done the best though, he’s peaked at runner up!
We’ve also got a new entry, as Martin Platt has entered the leaderboard for the first time at number 13. But how long can he stay there? Can he make the final leaderboard of the game too? Find out after the Semi finals!
Exits from leaderboard since Round 2
Gone from the leaderboard since Round 2 are Curly Watts, Bethany Platt, Graeme Proctor, Ashley Peacock, Eccles the Border Terrier, and Les Battersby, who were all eliminated in Round 3! Cerberus, Shelley, and Tina have also been booted out of the leaderboard, the first time this has ever happened for Cerberus and Tina, despite them all going through to the Semis
The benchmark score to beat has changed again since Round 2, back in Round 2 to reach the top 20 you would need at least 56 points. This round it is 44!
Now let’s see whose performance or score has improved or worsened the most in Round 3!
Biggest climber- Karen Phillips/McDonald- up 7
Biggest faller- Hayley Cropper- down 10
After winning two heats back to back, and remaining on the leaderboard one Round later, Karen is continuing to improve since Round 2, where she entered the leaderboard for the first time ever! She has ended the round a peak position of 7, 7 places higher than her original ranking of number 13 back in Round 2. At 13, back in Round 2 Karen was close to leaving the leaderboard. But she’s pulled it back this round, as despite her winning score being lower than her first winning score, she has managed to beat 8 other names with less points, explaining her climb
Also on the rise at the end of Round 3 is Deirdre, who moves up the leaderboard 5 places, all the way to the top of the board for the first time ever, after knocking off her mum Blanche. Deirdre also remains with a perfect game, having won all 3 of her heats so far!
Eva continues to rise too, peaking at fourth now after a 3 step climb and yet another victory under her belt. Liz has risen 2 places too, to 3rd, also with another win, while Jason has got 2 jumps despite still not winning a heat yet. With the Semi final just round the corner, these rises have put Karen, Deirdre, Eva, Liz, and Jason in good stead to potentially make the final, especially since the last two leaderboard winners have dropped! We’ll get to that in a sec
Yep, on the fallers front, past leaderboard toppers Blanche and Hayley have both dropped down each! This is a major shock to me, Hayley topped the Round 1 leaderboard by a landslide, while Blanche was at the top of the Round 2 leaderboard, with Hayley just below her. I thought these two were shoe ins for top 2 of the whole game. Now I’m not so sure anymore. Hayley is the biggest faller of the round, dropping 10 places. And with the first Semi final coming today, things don’t bode well for these two legends at all atm. Round 3 saw Hayley lose her first ever heat, while Blanche won her third consecutive heat, but her winning score is really underwhelming compared to some other heat winners, which is not good. This is really not the time for falling!
Kylie has also fallen down the board yet again, after peaking at 4 in Round 1 she’s been going downhill ever since, but this is her biggest drop yet, she’s down 8! Her timing couldn’t have been worse. Big sister Becky is down 3 from Round 2, while Fred has dropped 2 too
And let’s not forget about Lloyd, he’s down 6 after peaking at number 16. Lloyd is yet another one who needs to get his finger out if he is wanting to make the Final, cos it’s not looking good for him at all!

2023.06.02 13:45 Igoagainandagain Tempering expectations for Oppenheimer. What should we realistically expect?

Oppenheimer seems to be one of those films whose potential performance is hard to pin down. Predictions seem to be ranging from sub $200 million to 600 million.
Personally, I think some people are overestimating Nolan's drawing power. This isn’t to say he doesn't have any, far from it, I would say he is second only to James Cameron in terms of pull when it comes to directors. How much pull? Let's look at some of his original IP films post TDK.
1) Inception (836 million)
2) Interstellar (701 million)
3) Dunkirk (525 million)
4) Tenet(363 million)
Now, some people have pointed out how films have had progressively decreasing boxoffice since TDKR, but I think that's a wrong takeaway from these grosses. One shouldn't expect a war film to gross as much as a sci-fi action movie or a superhero. Now, I'll ignore TENET as it's a pre-vax covid re-release, so it's not really fair to judge its performance compared to other films in the genre but let's look at the others.
1) Dunkirk is the highest grossing ww2 movie and the second highest war movie(after American Sniper).
2) Inception is also in the upper echelon of what you can expect in a mind-bending sci-fi like this ( in the same tier as The Matrix Reloaded or Terminator 2).
3) Interstellar similarly is also amongst the highest grossing in the non-action space sci-fi flicks (Gravity, The Martian and Contact).
What this shows is that Nolan's pull can help his films accomplish top-tier grosses you can expect in a particular genre/sub genre. Now, his films are not going to be the extreme outlier of a particular genre like say Avatar in sci-fi/action or Avengers Endgame but it'll be in the upper half of the genre. So, Since Oppenheimer is a biopic let's look at some of the highest grossing biopics.
1) Bohemian Rhapsody (2018) - $910.8 Million.
2) American Sniper (2014) - $547.4 Million
3) The Greatest Showman (2017) - $435.7 Million
4) The King's Speech (2010) - $427.3 Million
5) The Wolf Of Wall Street (2013) - $392 Million
6) Catch Me If You Can (2002) - $352.1 Million
7) Schindler's List (1993) - $322.1 Million
8) Green Book (2018) - $321.7 Million
9) A Beautiful Mind(2001) - $316.8 million
10) The Blind Side (2009) - $309.2 Million
The Bohemian Rhapsody is the extreme outlier of this genre and I think we safely ignore that. And not all biopics have the same potential. Some elements that can work in favour of a biopic.
1) It's about a famous musician(Bohemian Rhapsody, Rocketman, Elvis)
2) It's inspiring (The Kings Speech, The Blindside, Gandhi,Schindler's List- Yes, I know the holocaust is horrific, but Schindler's Story, in particular can be viewed as inspiring).
3) It's about a scientist (Imitation game, A Beautiful mind).
While Oppenheimer being American can help boost the domestic box office, he is not fresh in the public's mind like Chris Kyle was(American Sniper did 350 million at the US box office). A performance like American Sniper is unlikely. Based on what we know so far, It's not an inspirational story as the second half of the film is supposed to be about Oppenheimer's trial that lead to his security clearance being revoked. Nolan and crew have described this as more of a "thriller"
Looking at the rest of these films, Oppenheimer is most similar to A Beautiful Mind and The Imitation Game(not in the list but grossed a good $233 million). But both of them are PG-13 while Oppenheimer is R-rated and has a longer run time to boot.
So, if Nolan delivers a critically acclaimed film, it should realistically gross north of 250 million and in a generally optimistic scenario gross around $350 million. A gross between $250 to $350 million shouldn't be considered a mark against Nolan's pull because as I said at the start of this post his pull can help his films gross similar amount to some of the highest grossing films of their particular genre/sub genre which in this case are The Imitation Game and A Beautiful Mind. If it's a run away success then you expect A King's Speech tier success.
Anything higher like $500 to $600 million that many here are talking about would require a one of a kind level of performance which I don't think is possible considering the competition, run time and the R-rating. Again, If it happens I'll be happy as I like Nolan but I just don't think such a performance is likely. If anything, I'm making this post to pre-empt any potential backlash if it happens to make a perfectly reasonable amount a movie of this kind can make.

Since I was deeply mired in Stars playoffs anxiety and then the resulting depression from how it ended, I’m only just now catching up with the NCAA Lacrosse championships from the last few weeks on Hulu (if you have Hulu and just search “college lacrosse” you can watch back dozens of games); if there are any lacrosse fans here please take note that last weekend’s semifinal and championship games were some of the best lacrosse I’ve seen in 25 years of playing/ watching the sport. Incredibly high scoring and physical tournament this year.
Also- for anyone who really misses hockey and can’t bring themselves to be interested in Florida or Vegas playing for the cup, please also note that Hulu now has a shit ton of NLL (box lacrosse) games on the platform. For the uninitiated, box lacrosse is a sport played by Canadians who didn’t make the NHL. It’s literally lacrosse played on a turf they roll out over a hockey rink, where the players all wear hockey helmets for some reason. Cross-checking and checking from behind are both legal in the game which means it’s sometimes the most violently unhinged bullshit you’ll ever see in sports. Highly recommended
