Hello all-american rejects, mothers of Stacy and Hoobastankarinas! It is finally time to rate one of the subgenres of all time -
pop punk! Welcome to the 00s Pop Punk Rate.
Introduction - What Is Pop Punk?
Pop punk is a genre that was invented by musical artist Machine Gun Kelly in the year 2020.
No but really, despite the sendup of it MGK contributed, the subgenre actually has a long and storied history dating back to the 1970s. One could argue bands such as The Ramones were essential foundations for the genre, if not themselves being a pop punk band. A reaction to the emergence of punk in the 70s, pop punk takes the energetic thrashings of punk music and overlays the sensibilities of pop song-crafting. Pop-punk saw an explosion of popularity in the late 90s with the rise of bands such as Blink-182, Green Day and The Offspring, and arguably hit its peak in the 00s with the creation of Van’s Warped Tour, a touring music festival that featured a lineup of some of the biggest pop-punk, post-punk and metal acts of the time. Alongside its rise, it would come to incorporate elements of ska, college rock, emo and post-punk.
Another element of pop-punk that differentiates it from punk is its lyrical focus. While punk’s focus tends to be heavily political and explicitly anti-authoritarian, pop-punk trades that topical focus for poppier subjects - love, lust, drunkenness, and how much the singers truly hate this town (worth mentioning that while this is in general true, especially of more mainstream pop punk acts, there are some notable exceptions).
In discussions of subgenres of punk, pop-punk tends to be largely ignored or snidely dismissed by both pop and punk communities but I think this is unfair. Yes, its lyrical subjects are often sophomoric and steeped in teen angst. Yes, the pop focus can cause the songs to feel derivative for some punk listeners. Yes, the culture surrounding pop punk has given us moments that are unintentionally hilarious. However, there is a reason this genre gained such attention - to borrow a phrase from pop, because it slaps. It takes pop music and thrashes it around. It fills the listener with nostalgic angst with power chord after power chord. It is an ode to the immaturity of youth. It is wildly influential; you can see pop-punk’s fingerprints in tons of modern genres - emo rap, hyperpop, and even Billboard-smashing pop songs.
Pop-punk is fun and raucous and a fantastic send-up to the teenage years many of us reminisce about. Today, it gets its due. Happy rating. - u/seanderlust

BONUS
Okay, so.
The 00s pop punk era of course coincided with the rise of a number of other genres. Seeing an opportunity for a genre overlap in the interest of gaining fans from other genres, indie punk and metal label Fearless Records put out a series of compilation albums over the 00s and 10s. These CDs contained tracks of punk bands doing covers of pop, metal, and various other genres. They referred to it under the umbrella term Punk Goes… and featured such titles as Punk Goes Metal, Punk Goes 80s, and Punk Goes Crunk.
The most popular though, and the one that garnered the most subsequent albums was Punk Goes Pop. In this series, punk bands covered various pop songs that were popular at the time in punkier stylings. Think of it as Now That’s What I Call Music, but if all the songs were sung by Mayday Parade. It was an interesting idea and gained the involved punk bands attention outside of their core fanbase. I mean come on - pop?! AND punk??!! What is this, a crossover episode?
For our bonus rate, we will be rating a sample of tracks that were recorded for the Punk Goes… series. Some of these are quite good! Some of these are certainly pieces of music that musicians decided to record! But which is the best? That is for you, dear popheads, to decide.
- Yellowcard - Everywhere
- All Time Low - Umbrella
- Mayday Parade - When I Grow Up
- The Cab - Disturbia
- Artist Vs Poet - Bad Romance
- The Ready Set - Airplanes
- Go Radio - Rolling In The Deep
- The Downtown Fiction - Super Bass
- Seaway - Closer
To be clear: Rating these songs is optional. You can give a score to one of them, two of them, all nine, or any number in between. You cannot use your 0 or 11 on any of them.
Rules & Instructions
PLEASE READ THESE THOROUGHLY TO AVOID HAVING TO DEAL WITH ANY PROBLEMS WITH YOUR BALLOT LATER.
- You must listen to and score every song in the main rate. Ballots with missing scores will not be accepted.
- Your scores must be on a scale from 1 to 10 and can include one decimal place but no more. So 7.3 is fine, but 7.31 is not.
- You may give one song in the whole rate a score of 11 and one other a score of 0, so if you want to award these scores, save them for your favourite and least favourite songs in the rate, respectively. You must leave a comment on the songs you give an 11 or a 0, and they must be songs from the main rate, not the bonus.
- We encourage you to leave comments of your general thoughts or reasoning behind your scores on any songs you wish. If you choose to do so however, they must be in this format, simply leaving one space after your score:
```
One Of THOSE Nights: 3 They wanna be Juicy J feat. The Weeknd soooooo bad ```
Any other formats will get your ballot rejected. WRONG EXAMPLES:
```
I Woke Up In A Car: Yeah but did you wake up in a new Bugatti? (8) (WRONG!)
The Curse Of Curves: 7: me getting a D+ on my trigonometry homework (WRONG!)
```
- Your ballot must be formatted exactly like the template in the message link, so make sure you use it, or the template in the backup pastebin, for your scores to be accepted.
- Your scores are not confidential. They will be revealed, along with any comments, with your username attached.
- DO NOT SABOTAGE the rate by giving outrageously low/high scores for the sole purpose of skewing the results, we reserve the right to exclude any ballot we suspect of this. If you're worried your scores could be mistakenly perceived as such, all you need to do is leave comments explaining the reasoning behind them.
- If you want to change any of your scores or comments after you've already submitted your ballot, feel free to message myself or my cohost u/seanderlust before the submission deadline to sort it.
Finally, here are the links you'll need to start rating:
If there's a problem with it, here's the backup pastebin.
And the playlists of all the songs in the rate.
Enjoy!
2023.06.02 14:54 stayclassypeople The 1979-80 Bowl Season
This is the 6th post in a series going over the bowl seasons from 1974-1997. Each year I'm examining the bowls with national title implications and the teams competing for the #1 ranking. If you want to catch up on prior seasons, check out the link to the master post to view previous write ups.
Setting the Stage
End of Regular Season Rankings
Teams | Record | AP | Coaches |
Ohio St | 11-0 | 1 | 3 (22) |
Alabama | 11-0 | 2 | 1 (4) |
USC | 10-0-1 | 3 | 2 (3) |
Florida St | 11-0 | 4 | 4 |
Oklahoma | 10-1 | 5 | 5 |
Arkansas | 10-1 | 6 | 6 |
Four teams entered the New Year with a 0 in the loss column and the pollsters couldn't agree on much. Ohio St was ranked #1/3, Alabama #2/1, and USC was #3/2. To make matters more challenging, only Ohio St and USC were paired up in a bowl (Rose). Alabama went to the Sugar of course and FSU to the Orange. With 4 unbeaten teams in 3 different bowl games, a split national title felt likely.
Important games and other notes: - October 13: USC tied Stanford, 21-21. Stanford finished the year 5-5-1.
- October 13: Oklahoma lost it's only game to rival Texas, 7-16
- October 27: Arkansas lost its only game to Houston, 10-13
- November 24th. 10-0 Nebraska lost the de facto Big 8 title Oklahoma, 14-17.
- BYU finished the regular season at 11-0, but was only ranked 9th in each poll.
The Bowls
Sugar Bowl: #2/1 Alabama vs #6/7 Arkansas (Jan 1st, 2pm EST) Alabama entered a 3rd straight Sugar Bowl #1 in the Coaches Poll, with a good chance to claim at least a share of the national championship. Two years ago, they won this game but were leapfrogged by Notre Dame and last season they won again but USC narrowly stole 1st place in the Coaches poll, leading them to split for a national title. With a win and Ohio St win, another split title was a strong likelihood. With a USC win, they would be in good position for a consensus title. The Tide took care of business either way. After spotting Arkansas 3 points, they scored 17 unanswered to lead 17-3 at the half. The Razorbacks managed to cut the lead to 17-9 with a 3rd quarter TD, but Alabama closed the door on their comeback with a mid 4th quarter TD to win 24-9 . . . just in time to tune into the Rose Bowl
Rose Bowl: #1/3 Ohio St vs #3/2 USC (Jan 1st, 5PM EST) Leading into the day, this game would become a de facto national title if Arkansas could upset Alabam in the Sugar. The Tide would ultimately win, but Ohio St was still in good position to at least earn a split, given that they were #1 in the AP. USC's chances were slim to finish first in either poll now, but after last year's results, never say never. USC led 10-0 in the 2nd, but Ohio St rallied to tie it by halftime. The Buckeyes added field goals in the 3rd and early 4th to lead 16-10. With 1:38 left in the game USC drove down to the OSU 1, and Heisman award winning RB, Charles White punched it in to give the Trojans a 17-16 lead and eventual win. OSU's championship hopes were dashed. USC's championship hopes were slim, but the win still meant a Rose bowl crown, which was now 6 straight for the Pac 10.
Orange Bowl #4 Florida St vs #5 Oklahoma (Jan 1st, 8pm EST) For fans under 40, its wild to think that an unbeaten Seminole team would only be 4th in the polls. Florida St had mostly been an afterthought in college football until Bobby Bowden arrived. In fact, just 6 seasons ago, they finished 0-11. Now in his 4th year, Bowden had the 'Noles on the doorstep of their 2nd ever unbeaten season in their 1st major bowl appearance. Still, their odds of claiming a national title were very slim. They would likely need losses by unbeaten Alabama and Ohio St earlier in the day, and hope that the at least one of the polls would put them #1 over USC. Alabama's win earlier in the day dashed those slim hopes, and Oklahoma piled on for good measure. After spotting FSU 7 points in the 1st, the Sooners scored 24 unanswered, including 17 in the 2nd, to roll to a 24-7 win.
Final Results
*Only includes teams receiving 1st place votes in either poll
Team | Record | AP | Coaches |
Alabama | 12-0 | 1 (46) | 1 (28) |
USC | 11-0-1 | 2 (21) | 2 (9) |
Oklahoma | 11-1 | 3 | 3 (1) |
For a season that seemed destined for another split national title, things worked out pretty cleanly. Thanks to Ohio State and Florida St's losses, Alabama finished the year as the only team unbeaten and untied (even unbeaten #9 BYU lost its bowl), making the Tide the easy choice for #1 in each poll. USC still siphoned off votes in each poll, but their tie to unranked Stanford was too much for the voters to overlook. After back to back season's of being denied a consensus national title, an undisputed national title was finally there's.
2023.06.02 14:36 ILikeNeurons A useful guide for maximizing your district's CCL membership for success
Growing your district's CCL membership is an achievable goal for a relatively new volunteer with minimal training.
If your congressional district
(find your district) has more than ~250 CCL members but less than 400 CCL members
(find CCL members in your district), grow your district's CCL power to at least 400 CCL members.
Rationale: While it's not necessary in every case
, our data has shown that districts with at least ~400 CCL members are statistically more likely to get their lawmaker's support.
Why it's an achievable goal: For districts with at least ~250 CCL members, you are well over half way there, and
we have a track record of tremendous growth!
How to get there: Tabling/clipboarding, presentations, invite friends/family, LTEs/Op-Eds that mention CCL by name
If your
Republican congressional district
(find your Rep) has more than ~600 CCL members but less than 1400 CCL members
(find CCL members in your district), grow your district's CCL power to at least 1400 CCL members.
Rationale: It may be overkill, but since Republican offices say they need ~100 phone calls from constituents, and even with no prompting or prodding, roughly 7% of CCL's roster will call their Rep after
receiving a text request to do so, we can reach 100 phone call from constituents with almost no additional action from group leaders or other members when districts have at least 1400 CCL members. We'd love ~30-40 R offices to have
at least 1400 CCL volunteers to maximize our chances of passing our bill.
Why it's an achievable goal: In addition to
CCL's regular impressive growth, we've got volunteers from all over the country reaching out to friends/family in
key districts, many of which fit this category. This is also forecast to be an unusually warm summer, and people are more likely to care about climate change when it's hot (i.e. these are optimal conditions for recruiting).
How to get there: Tabling/clipboarding, presentations, invite friends/family, LTEs/Op-Eds that mention CCL by name
If your district
(find your district) has more than 1400 CCL members
(find CCL members in your district) or you've already gotten your lawmaker's support, reach out to any friends/family in
key districts to invite them to participate in CCL.
Rationale: These are the districts that are most likely to make the difference in the passage of the bill.
Why it's an achievable goal: Many Americans have friends/family scattered around the country, and with several thousand CCLers being in districts with at least 1400 members or whose lawmaker has already supported EICDA, there are bound to be some with close contacts in these key districts. Surveys show
1 in 3 Americans would join, or are already participating in, a campaign to convince elected officials to take action to reduce global warming, if asked by someone they like and respect.
How to get there: CCL's training on Motivational Interviewing combined with communicating on carbon pricing
Edit: removed my name and fixed the YouTube link
Hi guys! I posted this last year to the Lost Media Wiki forum but didn't get a response, I figured I'd try here too.
I'm a long time lurker, first time poster. I got into a conversation with my husband, a fellow Boston native, about the time he was on "Kids Say The Darndest Things" back in 1998 when it came to Boston. November 20th, 1998 I believe is the air date.
He was 8 years old and was chosen out of 500 kids to be on the show! I have a few photos of him on stage and also a photo of his mother with Mr. Cosby. He rarely talked about this event of his life out of a little bit of embarrassment, but even more so when Cosby was disgraced. However, now that we're older, we want to find the recording.
He was once in possession of a tape that recorded the episode, and it was with his family - - but after his mother's passing, went missing. We attempted to contact CBS for a copy but they didn't return our calls, and we can only find bits and piece of the episode on YouTube, and none with his appearance. It appears that this version of the show doesn't exist wholly in a digital form whatsoever.
I am appealing to the Lost Media Wiki and other lost media sites to help us find either the partial clips with him in it (his name is Patrick) or the episode in its entirety if possible. He says he remembers talking to Cosby about Baseball. Patrick was wearing a Red Sox cap, a red shirt and he was blonde.
Heres a clip on YouTube of the episode:
2023.06.02 06:54 Storms_Wrath The Human Artificial Hivemind Part 378: Equisa Makes A Deal
First Previous Wiki Equisa frowned as she looked at her bosses again. The three Sprilnav Elders before her, not even Refined Elders, were simply staring at her disdainfully as if she'd asked if gravity was real. One of them wasn't even bothering to look at her and instead was scratching at his neck, likely a result of a bite.
A long time ago, there'd been someone who had released genetically modified Sprilnav into the air. They had been modified so heavily that it was definitely illegal, but the creatures were unusually hardy, bred fast enough to double their populations in a day, and constantly irritated most Sprilnav, even those who weren't Elders. And, of course, the products to prevent the bites were extra expensive, with planned obsolescence just another part of their hated design.
"But why can't I go back? There's no good reason for it. I want to see Joshua and Meihala again." She missed them greatly. Equisa had forgotten how lonely life was when there was no one you could call a friend. Even with all the wonderous tech of the Primary Galaxy, there was nothing that would fix that. Nothing real.
"Is fornicating with them your only reason for wishing to see them?"
"No," she replied. "But my relationship with them is a factor. I don't understand why you're constantly stonewalling me. It's unnecessary."
"You were trying to share technology with them."
"Then I won't do that anymore. Simple. Happy?"
"No."
"I can sign a binding non-disclosure agreement."
"You did last time, too."
Equisa scowled.
"I would like to talk with Nova, then."
The looks of disdain became those of derision. One of them looked like she was about to laugh at her.
"Nova is a Progenitor. He does not have time for you, much less should his divinity be tarnished by our presence. No, you are going to remain here and wait. Go find something else to do than waste our time."
The Elder pulled a hood over his head, tightened the straps of his cloak, and made a sign with his claws for the other two to follow. Equisa knew she wasn't invited to whatever meeting they were about to have. She assumed that she was going to get fired now and would have to find another place to work. That would be both demeaning and difficult. Another reminder of what she'd lost by being forced to leave the Alliance behind.
Equisa turned around mournfully, gazing at the door which led to the main corridor and elevator to the ground floor of the building. With absent amusement, she noticed that the windows had extra bars on the sides to prevent people from jumping out. Though she could jump off the very highest building in the city and come out unscathed.
Clearly, this wasn't getting her anywhere useful. Equisa had to re-think her options and determine a path forward. She exited the building, weaving through the crowds of Sprilnav that were walking and flying through the streets between the massive skyscrapers. Some of them had bought personal flight devices, useful for those who didn't want to deal with pedestrians. But it often led to disaster when people got drunk. But there were always more Sprilnav, so the accidents weren't being dealt with anytime soon.
She could see the high arches overhead, supported by huge amounts of metal and a superstructure that went down to the very core of the planet-sized city. After grabbing a few pieces of food that looked particularly good, like some meat from a new cloning facility, she settled down on a patch of artificial grass. There were other Sprilnav there, mostly couples on quiet excursions or children playing on various different playsets. But Equisa was alone.
She'd never had any children and didn't intend to. None of her previous mates had lasted longer than a few hundred years at most, which hadn't ever been enough time to unravel the complicated mess of secrets and suspicions surrounding almost every Sprilnav Elder. And having relationships with the common Sprilnav would be seen as a black mark on her reputation, perhaps the equal of the one she'd apparently received for daring to love two humans instead of some dry Elder who only moved one day a year.
While her relationship with Meihala and Joshua had been sudden, it hadn't been bereft of real love. She really did love them and wanted to have friends again. For far too long, she'd been alone. She didn't like feeling that anymore because it was in times like this when depression could sink its claws into her without warning.
She'd been trying to get in touch with the Alliance again without success. Even the more secret emergency methods she'd established weren't working at all. No quantum connections were successfully linked with her implants. Errors and notifications about having no access plagued her vision as she tried in vain to even send out a single message.
There was no way for her to reestablish contact, which worried and angered her. Even her ship was being watched, not that she could actually get to the Alliance using it. Wormholes were far too expensive for people of her stratum to be able to afford.
And she didn't have sponsors that would be willing to pay, either. She needed information, friends, and actual help. Help that no one was giving her. Her bosses didn't even care. It saddened her greatly. Equisa didn't know where she could find Nova, either. It wasn't like he was easy to find unless one knew where to look. He could easily disguise himself as a normal-looking Sprilnav, after all. Many technologies existed to allow that, and Nova likely had the best of the best.
Of course, Equisa wasn't sure how one could hide a tail, but that was just her. Even being able to have seen him once in her life was already far more than most Sprilnav would ever know. In that way, she'd been exposed to a higher power. Within the Sprilnav, the Progenitors were gods. They had cults and religious followings in their names, political power so immense that not even the rest of the species together could pool their resources enough to resist.
It was said that no one disagreed with them. And they didn't. Not if they wanted to continue existing. Equisa had a feeling that if Nova wanted to help her, he would. Though it wasn't like someone of his stature would appear before her.
"Why not?"
Equisa could feel the mindscape bend slightly and looked up to meet the eyes of a being that was far beyond her own abilities to comprehend. She didn't know what she felt at that moment.
Certainly surprised, for sure. A large amount of reverence for him and a growing disbelief that she wasn't dreaming. Perhaps she really was lying in bed with Meihala and Joshua again, and this irritating life would disappear when she awoke once more. But when she opened her eyes again, Nova still stood before her.
His small stature was quite distinctive. Despite her height advantage, there was no question as to the hierarchy of power here. Even the grass was bowing to him, bending low to the ground in a way she'd never known was possible.
And his voice held an aura of command so utterly intense that she only now noticed she was kneeling. She didn't bother trying to rise.
"What?" Equisa asked.
"Why wouldn't I appear before you?"
Of course he could read her mind. She expected nothing less. But it did feel a little violating. Okay, it felt very violating, but it wasn't like she could say that to his face.
Oh. She just had.
Nova's small form coiled around itself before bulging and changing color. Soon, a normal Sprilnav was standing before her, but that ethereal air was still there. It was like a smell in the air but beyond that. Something pleasant yet distinctive. It didn't seem like perfume, either. She knew that it was affecting her mind in some way, but she didn't really care. Perhaps that was part of the effect, too.
"You're way too high up. I'm a nobody compared to you. At most, I should be seeing a Refined Elder, not a whole Progenitor."
"Am I not what you expected, then?" Nova asked. His amusement was clear in his strangely commanding voice.
Equisa sighed. "I don't know whether you're real. I can't tell if you're mocking me. I... don't know how to feel about you being here."
"You don't want me here?"
"No, it's not that. I want you here, but also... sort of wonder. Why come to me now? Why me and not the countless other Elders? Am I special? Was I chosen as something greater? And why do my superiors refuse to let me return to Earth and Luna? I have a life there."
Equisa knew now, more than ever, that she didn't have a life here.
"You do not have a life there. The humans you care for will die in less than a millionth of the time you have lived. Elder Equisa, to put it simply, associating with them in such a way is not just immoral, but it is not possible in even the short term."
Nova's cold eyes made Equisa flinch back. "I... I want to live a life free of shackles. Is that so much to ask?"
"Yes. For a Sprilnav Elder from the Primary Galaxy, it is. As an Elder, you are an envoy to the species as a whole. You represent us. Know that your actions on Luna were so reviled by some that I have already dismissed motions to assassinate you."
"People came to you, a Progenitor, to ask permission to kill me?"
"Yes."
"Why?"
"Because if they did it without my permission, due to your
very close ties with Humanity, it could become problematic for them. I would not protect them from the consequences of their actions. And additionally, there are some Elders that have called for you to be sealed away for somatic realignments."
Equisa couldn't hide her fury.
"They want to alter my mind, because they couldn't handle the thought of a human sticking themselves in me? How insanely childish and petty. In fact, I'd think the reputation of always being down for it is far better than that of genocidal sadists, which is the reputation our species has among all the others. Progenitor, kill me if you must, but at least let me die free."
"You shall. However, I am not here to kill you. I am here to determine what to do with you. Sending you back to Humanity would prevent a rupture of relations, particularly the only positive relations that Elders have with them period, with the exception of Nilnacrawla in Penny's head. However, doing so would also anger a number of highly powerful conservative factions, particularly those based around supremacy and purity of our species. Granted, I would not have to worry about such an issue. But you, and your family, might be different. It is entirely possible they might wipe out all of your relatives, were you to leave for Luna to go back and soil yourself among the humans."
She frowned. "I did not soil myself, Progenitor. You don't understand what it's like. Even now, everyone I thought I knew ridicules me for daring to love who I love. Even you. You're the closest thing to a god this universe has ever seen. And yet, even you stand before me, heaping your disgust for me onto my already burdened shoulders. They're not animals, Progenitor."
"Your actions are casting the Alliance in a negative light as well, in the eyes of many Sprilnav who would not care otherwise."
"And so what? They don't matter."
"They do, you just do not want to admit it. If I wanted to stop you from loving them, I could, Equisa. Right here, right now, I could rearrange your brain, altering your memories like clay in my claws. I could make you forget what love even is. I could turn you into a slave, or into a living bioweapon. My disapproval of your decisions is mostly from the standpoint of someone who had to deal with the fallout. I care not for your decision to try and mate with humans."
"When you love someone, none of the other stuff matters. I want to go back, Progenitor Nova. Back to the Alliance. I don't know who decided that this punishment was necessary, but surely your word is above theirs."
"Yes, it is. That is not the only reason I have come to see you today. And I should note that you would do better to be more careful with your words around other Elders, or especially if you have the misfortune to meet any other Progenitors."
"I am... destabilized, Progenitor Nova. I apologize. The people I love are in another galaxy, and I am not able to reach them anymore. I'm not sure if you know how that feels."
"I did. I lived a life with my mate for eons. Before the Source war, I was the happiest Sprilnav there ever was. Now, she is long dead. The Source personally dug its claws into her chest, turning her bones to a constantly exploding supernova within her body, all while keeping her alive for a subjective time that is longer than your life has ever been. My grief after the war was great enough that I considered taking my own life. So yes, I know what it is like to love. But I am warning you about the cost of your actions."
Equisa could feel the venom in his voice. It triggered her instincts to run, but her muscles wouldn't move. Terror rang like a bell throughout her psyche as she was consumed by the hunger in Nova's eyes. And then, it all faded. The bone-curdling fear disappeared, and Nova tilted his head. She took it as a cue to speak again.
"You faced the Great Enemy alone?"
"Not alone, until she died. Yes, the Source killed her. Do I hate it? Not really. The deed is done, and the scar is cold. The real reason for the Source war was that during the glory days, we were sucking the very life force of the psychic realm away. The Source tried to open a dialogue to prevent it, and failed. When the last of its family died, leaving it as the sole inhabitant of the mindscape, the war began."
The scar wasn't cold, that was for sure. No matter how much he liked to pretend otherwise. "I can still hear your thoughts, you know."
"Yes."
"It would be nice if you allowed me to live in my delusions for a while longer."
"Well, back to the conversation then. You claim that I have tarnished the reputation of the Sprilnav, and yet we continue to purge species in the Secondary Galaxy for the mere crime of making an AI. Even though you alone could easily reach across the galaxy to deal with it at that point." "Yes."
"But you're a god."
"Yes, I am. However, that does not mean that I wish to willingly fight another one. An AI that reaches technological singularity is also a god, as much as the concept can be constrained in reality."
"What do you mean?"
"When a being becomes immensely powerful, their conceptual weight also increases, assuming they increase their psychic energy footprint. That's why Penny was able to survive being disemboweled by Yasihaut several times in quick succession. It is part of why Elders can survive forces mundane Sprilnav cannot. It is why I could walk into a black hole and survive."
"Have you?"
"Yes."
"What is it like?"
"There are no words."
"Nothing?"
"Describing something that does not exist is very difficult. How do you count in a universe where numbers do not exist? It is much the same for them. The mess inside the event horizon of a black hole is incredibly damaging, even for a being such as myself. Were I to remain in a singularity for long enough, though it would not kill me, it would begin to hurt."
"There seems to be a lot of extra importance with concepts, then," Equisa said.
"Elder Equisa, concepts run the universe. The Source's power is conceptual, just as mine is. Even the hivemind has some conceptual power, though it does not know it for sure yet. And you will not tell it, if you are to go back to Luna."
"Can you protect my family?"
"Of course," Nova replied. He clacked his jaws once, his nostrils flaring as he inhaled.
"Will you?"
"Maybe. I will need a favor in return."
"Well, if I die completing your favor, don't hold it against me."
"Do not worry. That is not the type of favor that I require. Rather, I need you to monitor the progress of the Alliance. Particularly the powers of the hivemind, Penny, Gaia, and Brey. And the intelligence of their various AI citizens."
"Can't you do that?"
"Yes, and no. Remaining near the Source's bones for a long time is not preferred."
"Then I will try. But it may not be easy, and there is every possibility my information could be wrong."
"Yes. I am aware," Nova responded. "But I will see what you can do."
"So I can go back?"
"Yes, Equisa. Though again, do not share what you know anymore. You are allowed to provide context for situations. Sharing any technological knowledge will be looked upon negatively." "I understand. I just want to see them again."
"You shall."
"She did what?" Hive Emperor Calanii growled.
"The Alliance claims that Rank 10 Ambassador Liinara insulted them several times, and has provided a recording of what was said. It has been verified by VI analysis as authentic," his advisor said.
Calanii quickly put on his clothes, now finished with the deep massage he'd been waiting for all day. He stretched a bit, feeling the gaps in his chitin more than he used to. He was getting old, slowly. Not that he'd die of old age with the immortality treatments, but aging still was possible. And the growth hormones in it had resulted in him becoming larger than he'd once been.
"I'll come back to that later. Where is she now?"
"She has gone into hiding, likely presuming that you are going to kill her. We know where she is."
"I shall issue a formal apology, then. I will also give the Alliance any compensation they reasonably request. They are requesting compensation, yes?"
"They are."
"Then deliver the contents of their list to my desk tomorrow."
"As you wish, Hive Emperor."
The advisor bowed and left. Calanii was glad that the pheromone blocker was active right now. His anger was barely contained, especially at the thought of such a stupid blunder. Reaching Rank 10 wasn't something just anyone could do, especially as an Ambassador. Liinara would die if the Alliance requested it. And if they did not, she might still die anyway.
He'd schedule a call with them and try to reestablish diplomatic ties. There was no way that their relationship would survive any longer by being left out to thaw with such a heinous breach of etiquette. He then received another call, this one directly to his office.
The banners overhead fluttered with a light breeze, obviously artificial but still pleasant on his chitin. He'd been very stressed that past few days, with Exii'darii's jailbreak looming over him. She'd try to kill him, that was for sure. The countermeasures were being put in place all around the palace, and most military sites and urban centers would receive special equipment deliveries soon. Logistics were a mess, but when the call went out, an executive order from the Hive Emperor was an easy way to speed things along.
Calanii sauntered over to his desk, realizing that he would need much more anti-stress ointment than he'd thought. It was so intense that his actual body was starting to feel it. When he answered, the screen showed the face of a Cawlarian.
"Who is this?"
"I am Truth Speaker Huatil."
"The Nest Overlord's mate?"
"Yes."
"What business do you have with me, that he does not?"
"The Sennes Hive Union has intelligence that the Sprilnav are operating several clandestine mind-control cells, intent on sowing discord and chaos amongst your populace. They have a particular focus on government officials, such as Ambassadors."
Calanii got what she was suggesting. He didn't question how she'd learned the information. No one that shacked up with the leader of an entire nation would be some pointless nobody with no connections.
"You mean Ambassador Liinara?"
"Her and others. Rich executives at companies, such as one under scrutiny for certain actions against the Alliance several years ago."
"How long has this been going on?"
"That is unknown," Hautil admitted. "What is known is that they will begin to cement their power soon. When they feel that the have enough, they will make their moves."
"Then we must move first."
"Yes, we shall. But that does not include us alone, but also the Alliance."
"What exactly are you suggesting?"
"Well, an agreement. A treaty organization, perhaps. Drafts of the documents will be given to you if you agree to inspect them. Note that this would likely be a full defensive alliance, with all that entails. There would be no room for half-measures."
"Then why the Alliance?"
"The Alliance will be a peer player in under three years," Hautil said. "By every metric, they have already reached the level of technology of our base militaries, though not specialized technology like stealth or shields yet. In particular, their ability to have an outsized impact despite their small population due to Phoebe and Edu'frec's control over vast drone and android forces is already becoming a potential concern."
Calanii knew that was true, at least. His own spies within the Alliance had noted the explosion in their fleet size with worry. Their encryption was already incredible, though that was because of their two AIs. Furthermore, they had a whole species that quite literally could not be infiltrated for spying. Perhaps that extended to mind control, as well.
"Estimates place the number of satellites in their stellar constellation within the Sol system at 330 billion. That is enough to power hundreds of times their current civilization's total power usage. Their Mercury-class guns have been confirmed capable of breaching Sprilnav ships, placing them on par with our own battlecruiser weaponry. In terms of fleet numbers itself, they have 11 dreadnaughts, with 13 more assumed under construction, 30,000 battlecruisers, 50,000 carriers, 120,000 cruisers, 500,000 destroyers, and 1.1 million frigates. In addition to that, nearly 2 million drone craft, capable of linking to direct battle networks, directed by Edu'frec and Phoebe. These numbers have not been publicized."
"Quite something, but nowhere near the billions we have," Calanii replied. Those numbers were similar to the reports he'd received. Supposedly, most of that expansion was possible due to Guulin and Acuarfar populations being so high and the wealth of the Alliance skyrocketing along with the average living standards. And most crews were small, with only a little above the number of people necessary to run a ship being placed on one, though all had overlapping specializations. This was most true for humans, which had the ability to take all the typical specializations and roll them into one.
Due to the hivemind, a human could be the best engineer ever seen at one moment and the best pilot ever the next. Its usefulness seemed to know no bounds.
"Yes. But they can put up a fight now, and most of our fleets would be tied up as defense forces in a war."
"And mind control?"
"We have confirmed that there isn't any of it within the highest members of their government. The number of surprise scans has increased considerably, and it seems that their leadership is in a contained panic over the possibility. They seem to be looking for a capability to block the abilities of mind control chips to work period," Hautil reported.
Calanii had a theory.
"You wouldn't happen to know anything about that, would you?"
"I would not."
So she was willing to lie to his face, then. His own intelligence agencies only had one single spy within the Blue Intelligence Agency. That was how they'd learned the method of placing chips within the brain to directly interfere with any attempts at establishing control. It was likely a stopgap measure since an Elder would likely find a way around it with enough motivation, resources, and time.
"Truth Speaker, yes?" Calanii asked, bemused.
"I am."
"How interesting. I know who you are."
Calanii could almost smell it in her carefully controlled movements.
"Do you? Who do you think I am?"
"You are an Agent. Top 100, most likely. Your control is admirable."
"You have been taught about something?"
"Yes," Calanii replied. "My uncle was a highly connected individual, just as my parents were. We do have our equilavents, you know."
Hautil grinned. "I've run infiltration missions on your so-called 'Star Raiders' before. You don't exactly run it as cleanly as it could be. I could provide some pointers, for a price."
That wasn't exactly comforting. She wasn't just in the lower numbers, either. Maybe he was even talking with someone below the designation 010.
"And you are authorized to give me that information?"
"Yes. I could be said to be a little... high in the hierarchy. Know that this is not to leave the room either. React to me normally at a summit or meeting, and we will be able to establish a proper working relationship."
"I do not trust you."
"Good."
"And when it comes to the Alliance, I will determine what actions to take."
"Don't wait too long, or they may just decide to seize control for themselves."
2023.06.02 05:49 stuarthistorian Sir Alexander Stewart, 4th High Steward of Scotland
| The tree gets more and more busy after this point...This is where it begins to split into more and more Stewarts, as Walter Fitz Alan became a Stewart during his life, his sons and daughters would be the first Stewarts, of which there would be many, many more after. There is a lot written about a few of these early Stewards of Scotland, but Walter, Alexander's father, and Alexander himself, have very little written about them. Luckily someone has compiled the little info I've seen on Alexander on wikipedia quite well. Sir Alexander Stewart was known as Alexander of Dundonald, and was a Scottish magnate who in 1241 succeeded his father Walter as hereditary High Steward of Scotland. He apparently fought on the Seventh Crusade under King Louis IX of France, during which his younger brother John was killed at Damietta in Egypt in 1249. In 1255 he appears as one of the Regents of Scotland during the minority of King Alexander III. He also seems to have made a pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela in Spain and in honour of the saint baptised his eldest surviving son James, a name rare before then in Scotland. He seems to have commanded the right wing of the armed force which, at Largs in October 1263, successfully defended Scotland against attempted invasion by King Haakon IV of Norway. It appears to have been in his time that the Stewarts acquired the lordship of the Cowal peninsula, with their castle at Dunoon. He is recorded as playing a prominent part in affairs during the reign of Alexander, being referred to as senescallus Scotie (Steward of Scotland) instead of the older dapifer regis Scotie (Steward of the King of Scotland), so indicating that he held a major office of state that was significant nationally rather than just being a courtier in the royal household. He died in 1282, and was succeeded by his son James. His wife is said to have been named Jean. All genealogists concur in saying that Jean, daughter and heiress of Angus Macrory, or M‘Roderick, Lord of Bute. They had four documented children: James Stewart, 5th High Steward of Scotland (much more on him soon) Sir John Stewart of Bonkyll (more on him as well) Elizabeth Stewart, who married Sir William Douglas the Hardy (her too!) Hawise Stewart, who married John de Soulis. 2023.06.02 02:55 Darth_84N3 Star Wars Re-Watch Podcast SPECIAL EDITION: Rogue One
What can one say about Rogue One that hasn't already been said. Releasing almost a year after The Force Awakens, anticipation was high for the franchise's first theatrical spinoff attempt. Nowadays I can't remember if going into the theater, everyone knew the story would be about how the rebels managed to steal the plans for the Death Star.
I seem to remember the plot to the DOOM clone Dark Forces involved kidnapping the character General Nadine (who would be seen on screen for the first time in a terrible fake beard in Return of the Jedi). I'm most likely wrong but, I vaguely remember that the reason
Kyle Katarn kidnaps Nadine is because he's the one Imperial who defects and helps the fledgling alliance steal the plans in the first place. Kyle Katarn is also the
first character in the Star Wars Universe to utilize the now legendary Bryar Pistol that Cassian Andor also carries as his sidearm.
The impetus for the film originates in a throw away line in A New Hope. We all know Leia hides the plans for the Death Star in R2-D2 but, we never learn how she came to acquire them until now. We learn the weakness in the Death Star was a design flaw engineered by it's captive creator Galen Erso portrayed by Mads Mikkelsen. Excellent performance by an excellent actor who at this point in his career, has portrayed more villains than heroes. Here he does a great job and with the death of wife Lyra, his character has all the motivation he needs to plot his revenge over the twenty plus years of construction of the deadliest weapon every conceived.
I think by far everyone's favorite character ending up being K-2SO portrayed by Alan Tudyk. Even though he's portraying a droid, there was more humanity in the lines delivered by Tudyk's motion capped performance than the rest of cast combined. Of course it was also really cool to see Darth Vader in a movie other than the the original trilogy. James Earl Jones does a great job with his limited lines. Director Krennic portrayed by Ben Mendelsohn also does a fantastic job portraying an evil character. I think it was
Chris Stuckmann who really loved how Mendelsohn chewed the scenery and went FULL EVIL VILLAIN in the scenes he was in. Well done to the casting director that hired him.
My favorite scene was of course the naval battle at the end. Especially when Admiral Raddus notices the disabled Star Destroyer and uses Hammerhead Corvette to ram it which then turn it into a giant needle to pierce through the planetary shield protecting Scarif. Awesome sequence! I loved every second of it.
Thank you for listening to this Special Edition of the Star Wars Re-Watch Podcast. No video for this episode unfortunately since the encoder failed and only recorded a few minutes of video. Thankfully I record the audio separately just in case such an even takes place.
2023.06.02 02:47 kauan1983 The conspiracy lore and the dynamic between the government agencies in Stranger Things
| Something that i am extremely fascinated about in Stranger Things is the government conspiracy angle of the series, and over the seasons, i felt that the writing started to give us less details about how the government agencies work in this universe. Also, many details of the lore are still unresolved, and i fear some of them might not be resolved in S5, so I decided to make an analysis of everything that involves the government in the show to create my own version of the timeline of the events involving the U.S. government, and gather information to hypothesize events that may have happened offscreen, the occupations of some characters within the government and what agencies are involved with everything that has happened in the show since S1. I hope you guys enjoy the read! PROJECT MKULTRA - In 1953, The MKUltra program was officially sanctioned by the CIA, a multimillion-dollar initiative intended to develop mind control techniques. The experiments would be conducted in many hospitals, prisons and colleges across the U.S. Hawkins National Laboratory was one of many facilities in the U.S. where MKUltra was being conducted - Dr. Martin Brenner was the director of CIA operations at this laboratory. - MKUltra is a real CIA-sanctioned research that was officially halted in 1973. And it was the basis for a science-based horror in the show's lore. But the Duffers never wanted to really dive into it, as the story they wanted to tell was mainly inspired by the Montauk Project and would focus in children with super powers and other dimensions. There is a little talk about it in the official behind the scenes companion Worlds Turned Upside Down: I wouldn't say we had done necessarily a deep dive into it. It was more a surface glance of seeing what they were up to and then using it as an excuse to have science-based horror in our narrative. — Ross Duffer - The presence of the MKUltra in the lore is what canonically establishes the CIA as the bad men we see in S1 and briefly in S2. The agency is only mentioned once in the show when Hopper and Powell are investigating documents about the HNL/MKUltra, but we can confirm that the CIA was also responsible for funding Brenner's program as in the Worlds Turned Upside Down book we can see government cards with a "Central Intelligence Agency Clandestine Ops" badge in it. PROJECT INDIGO - Doctor Brenner's program. It's the main government project of Stranger Things, and although never mentioned in the show, the name of the program was supposed to be "INDIGO" which was also the proposed name of the show as stated by the Duffers in their MasterClass: So we just came up with a bunch of ideas. We had The Keep, we had INDIGO which was gonna be the name of the government program, and amidst that we had Stranger Things. — Ross Duffer It's unclear if the Duffers kept the name as it was never mentioned in the show, but the name is mentioned in the Suspicious Minds book, which was supervised by one of the show's writers - Paul Dichter. Project Indigo is basically the Hawkins equivalent of the Montauk Project. While the MKUltra was the Duffers' basis for a science-based horror in the lore, INDIGO is where the most crazy, cutting-edge developments in science come in. The Duffers had the desire to play with the "sandbox" of elements that the Montauk conspiracy could offer. In the conspiracy, there were talks about children with psychic/psionic powers (which became the Numbers 001 to 018), other dimensions (like the Upside Down, Dimension X and the Hellscape), alien contact, monsters being unleashed (Demogorgon/DX entities) and even time travel, which is something that was originally part of the ST mythology as we can see in the document below: The Montauk Pitch by the Duffer Brothers THE PROGRAM STARTS - As we learned in S4, the beginning of the program happens in 1959, and is a result of Dr. Brenner discovering a boy with extraordinary psychic abilities, Henry, after his mother contacts him in the hopes of sending him to a facility where he would be locked away and fixed. Henry, knowing what his mother was planning, decided to kill his whole family, but would eventually fall into a coma due to not knowing his limits while using his psychic powers. - Brenner knew what the boy did and also what he was capable of, and wanted to not just study but also control him. After the Creel House murders, Brenner would take Henry to the lab and the CIA would cover up anything that could compromise their operation. Victor Creel, the only survivor of the events in the house was declared legally insane, the records of what Victor claimed to have occurred in his house were sealed. - Brenner eventually sold to the CIA a separate program that he planned to start, a program that would study Henry Creel who was presented to the government as a potential weapon against the Soviets as stated by Matt Duffer in this interview by Deadline. He knew what this kid did and also what he was capable of when he was young. Brenner’s going, how can I mold this character, but not just into a weapon? That’s really how he sold it to the government, but for him as a scientist, it’s like, what other worlds can this kid show me about how our universe works? — Matt Duffer - As a scientist, Brenner had the desire to not only mold Henry into a weapon but also use him as a means to reach other worlds/dimensions and understand how the universe works. That makes me think that, at the time, Brenner expected Henry to be able to do what he would later discover only Eleven could do, which was the capablity of opening a rift or tear in time-space via psychic energy. - At some point, I would guess in late 1959 - early 1960s, an unknown event led Brenner to pacify Henry's abilities via Soteria. After that, Brenner would decide to evolve his program, replicating Henry's powers in other kids. This is something Matt Duffer confirmed that S5 will explore, It’s something we will get into in Season 5. What happened to that program once Henry became involved and how Brenner evolved it into including multiple kids. We’re going to go back and see some of that in Season 5. How Brenner tried to replicate Henry's abilities is unclear, but there's something mentioned in the Montauk bible that caught my attention and could be a brief explanation of how these preternatural abilities arise in some individuals: ELEVEN was an orphan with telekinesis. her preternatural abilities have been linked to mutations caused by her mothers drug use. In this version of the Eleven's backstory, the Duffers had not yet conceived El's mother being Terry Ives, the MKUltra involvement in the lore, and El's abilities being the result of experiments on her mother. Instead, we have genetic mutations caused by drug use. If there's any chance this is an explanation to how some individuals are born with psychic abilities, i suspect that Brenner knew that drugs had the potential to cause such mutations and that via experiments and training, he would unlock these supernatural psychic abilities. Knowing that, Brenner would use the MKUltra (which mainly involved psychedelic drugs) as a means to new supernatural kids to be born, just like it happened to Eleven. Virginia Creel's backstory In episode 7, Henry mentions that his parents did "such awful things." and that he "held up a mirror" to show them who they really were, but we never got to see what Henry used against his mother. Whatever awful thing she did, is still a mystery in the show. Also, Virginia somehow knew that Henry had supernatural abilities, so i think it's plausible to assume that, perhaps, Virginia knew it because of something dark in her past, something she believed resulted in her son being born with supernatural abilities and becoming a "broken" kid. The drug element that i mentioned before could also play a role in the origin of Henry's powers and whatever these dark memories of Virginia are. In S4E7 script, we can see that the whole part where Virginia suspects Henry is the responsible for the strange happenings in the house and contacts Brenner to lock her son away is missing. Meaning the writers later decided to add more layers to this backstory that may be explored in S5. The Duffer Brothers have confirmed in interviews that S5 will explore more of Henry's prequel story, and it was recently revealed in an article from BBC that the 'The First Shadow' stage play influences S5, so i'm hoping this means we'll see more of the Creels, specially Virginia. They were able to adjust some of the "things in the play" and said that working on it had given them ideas for the upcoming season five. Matt Duffer added: "Some of the mythology stuff is a little bit trickier, but like Ross said, it's been fun to have the play influence the show, and the show influenced the play, 1960's - THE PROGRAM EVOLVES - The evolution of Brenner's program logically took place during the 1960s, and some of that was already hinted in S2 when we discover that Terry had documents about people she believed were like her daughter. In some of those documents we get to see that Kali was abducted in London, a Cleveland teen girl who was seemingly abducted in Indiana, and a newborn boy was taken from a hospital. The baby was in the care of a nurse who was found dead in her home. - in 1969, Ray Carroll started working at HNL as an orderly. 1970's - At some point in the early 70's, Terry Ives got involved with MKUltra. (In the Suspicious Minds book, we learn that Terry was involved with MKUltra in 1969 but i'm not considering any information from the book due to the huge amount of inconsistencies.) - After Brenner kidnapped Eleven in 1971, the BreneHNL would face charges and lawsuits from Terry Ives but they were denied due to lack of evidence. - In 1973, the MKUltra was officially halted. - In 1974, Terry would try to take Eleven from the laboratory. Brenner ordered Terry to undergo an eletroshock therapy, ordering Ray Carroll to set the voltage up to 450 and then proceeded to electrocute her until her brain was damaged. - In 1979, One succeeded in having El "free" him by removing the Soteria from him. Regaining his psychic abilities, Henry kills all the Indigo numbers except for Eleven who would eventually banish him out of our dimension. After the attack, El falls into a coma, and Brenner doesn't dare bring another number to the lab. Instead, Brenner focuses the experiments on Eleven, who has repressed not only her memories of the past events but also her powers after waking up from her coma. Brenner knew that Eleven's abilities weren't lost but needed a "spark" to be restored. 1983 - Brenner believed that One was somewhere out there, "hiding in the darkness", and in 1983, after Eleven's powers were restored, Brenner would eventually use her abilities to find him. - In one experiment, El hears a strange sound that would get Brenner's attention. Despite El getting scared and the experiment being aborted, Brenner would repeat the experiment with the intention of making "contact". - On the night of november 6, 1983, El makes psychic contact with the Demogorgon in the Void, inadvertentely creating TUD, opening the mothergate and unleashing the monster. She eventually escaped the HNL that night. - On the next day, Brenner and the CIA receive a visit from agents that according to the S1E1 script were NSA. CIA and NSA agents would eventually work together to find Eleven and cover up anything that would compromise the secrecy of their clandestine operation. - Brenner and his team of agents along with MPs would go to the Hawkins Middle School in order to find Eleven after Hopper revealed her location. For their surprise, the Demogorgon appears in the school, distracting the agents and MPs, allowing the kids to run away from the CIA with Eleven. Brenner is brutally attacked by the Demogorgon, but survives the attack. - After the events in the school, we see hopper entering a black sedan with CIA agents. - CIA agents go to the Wheelers House searching for Eleven. This is the last time we see Brenner's men in the show. In the next season, the HNL would have a new director and a new staff. - In a clipping at Hawkins Police Station, there's information on the aftermath of the events in november, 1983, where we learn that Joyce Byers publicy alleged that Will was the subject of a secret government program. Joyce's allegation comes amidst the investigation into the past allegations of the lab's involvement with mind control experiments (MKUltra). - As to where Brenner and his entire staff were after the events in november, it is unknown, but i suspect Owens knew about what happened to them as in S2 he seems to be certain that Brenner's men were gone. The point is, mistakes have been made. Yes. Abundant mistakes, but, the men involved with those mistakes, the ones responsible for what happened to your brother and Miss Holland's death, they're gone. They're gone, and for better for worse, i'm the schmuck they brought in to make things better. — Sam Owens I've come to suspect that after the events of November '83, when the entire HNL staff was replaced, everything documented/recorded about the CIA's clandestine operations was securely locked away by CIA or DOE operatives, likely in the decommissioned Nevada Silo. (One alternate possibility is that those documents and recordings were stored in the Silo after the HNL was closed in december, 1984) Something that I find interesting is that both the Silo Lab and Owens' residence are located in Nevada, and in S4E5, when Eleven is taken to the Silo, originally the titles "Ruth, Nevada" appeared on the screen, that was later removed, but it implies that both the Silo and Owens' residence were close. This leads me to suspect that long before Owens and Brenner conceived of the NINA program, Owens already knew about the abandoned Silo in Nevada and decided to used it to store every TOP-SECRET documents/recordings of the CIA operations at HNL. https://preview.redd.it/qjidk3560i3b1.png?width=1334&format=png&auto=webp&v=enabled&s=287916d61b1b71b59d7b8c7ed3a7355f2b073f44 One interesting detail is that the idea of the government securely locking away videotapes is something the Duffers planned for their original Montauk conception, which most of it was a prototype for what we've seen in Stranger Things. In The Montauk Experiment, the O.S.S. would securely lock away film cannisters with recordings of everything that happened in Camp Hero after the experiments ended in a blood-soaked event. Details in the document below: The logline for 'The Montauk Experiment' DOCTOR SAM OWENS' POSITION IN THE U.S. GOVERNMENT - Sam Owens is a high-ranking member within U.S. Department of Energy as mentioned in the first official description of his character. Sometime between late 1983 - early 1984 he would be brought to HNL on a ‘clean-up’ assignment, tasked with containing the mess left by the CIA in 1983 and making things better. - As I previously mentioned, Owens may have been responsible for locking away all the documented CIA experimentation at HNL, and he also may have known the whereabouts of Brenner and other scientists and CIA operatives who worked with him all along. I would even assume that Owens and Brenner may have been in contact all this time. - During his time as director of the operations at HNL, Owens was involved in Will's treatment and in containing the spread of TUD. - In November 1984, during the Demodogs invasion, Owens met Eleven, who eventually closed the gate, ending TUD invasion. - A month later, the operations at HNL were officially shut down and the lab was closed after the release of the tape recording Owens' "confession", and Owens decided to help Eleven have a normal life under Hopper's care, giving him a forged birth certificate, and recommending Hopper to "let things cool off" for a year. This, of course, was done without the knowledge of the U.S. government. FACTONS WITHIN THE U.S. GOVERNMENT After the events os S2, in addition to the CIA Clandestine Ops and the DOE, other different agencies were introduced in the story: - US Army/Pentagon that briefly appears at the end of s3 (although we've seen the Military Police in the previous seasons which is a branch of the Army), and would be an antagonist faction in S4. - FBI agents who are presented as friends of Owens and allied to our main characters in S4. SULLIVAN'S FACTION - At some point after the HNL was closed, Doctor Owens, in addition to his high-ranking position in the DOE, also gained some position within the U.S. Army/Pentagon, probably tasked with monitoring and maintaining security in Hawkins after the lab was closed and the military presence left town. Lieutenant Colonel Jack Sullivan was involved in this, and it's possible he and Owens worked together. - An interesting detail is that the arm patch on Lt. Colonel Sullivan's uniform confirms that he's an United States Army Criminal Investigation Division operative, hence his associaton with the Pentagon. - At some point (i assume 1985), rumors about Eleven being alive and receiving help from someone within the U.S. government began to surface within the Pentagon, this would affect Owens' reputation. - It's also worth mentioning that in S4E6, Sullivan seems to imply that he knew or at least believed Brenner was alive. Explanation two, Dr. Brenner's special little pet has gone rogue again and he and his lackeys are now seeking to cover it up. Perhaps in the hopes of selling their pet to the Soviets. — Lt. Colonel Sullivan There's also this interview with Sherman Augustus where the interviewer asks him if Sullivan knows that Brenner is still alive, and Sherman's answer implies that Brenner being alive is something that wouldn't surprise Sullivan, Maybe because it was rumored within the Pentagon too. Basically, there's nothing that Sullivan doesn't know or expect about what's been happening in Hawkins and within the government since the events of S1. I'm pretty sure he knows that there's certain elements... because he says in the dialogue "there's rumors that she's getting help from someone on the inside". So there is nothing that he is not, you know, equating in that situation, he's not surprised. Whatever it is, you have to be a really strong and dynamic individual to be able to go in and try to kick E.T in the butt. — Sherman Augustus - In July 1985, Owens would find out about a foreign government invasion in Hawkins, and would go to Hawkins with Army/Pentagon forces to deal with the invasion, only to find an empty Soviet bunker. OWENS' FACTION - After the events in July, Owens got fired from his position in the miitary for failing his assignment to monitor security at Hawkins, i believe the previously mentioned rumors about him may also have played a role in his dismissal. - Owens, knowing that El had lost her powers, feared a further re-emergence of the TUD, which led him to begin developing a means to restore her abilities and bring them back stronger than before. - Owens would ally with Brenner to develop a way to restore Eleven's abilities, and Brenner convinced Owens that the only way to do so was via a process of re-experiencing her repressed memories in a program that they would later call NINA. It's unclear when Brenner and Owens' alliance started, but i personally believe they knew each other for longer than we initially thought, and shortly after the July events, Owens' looked for Brenner's help in order to develop a means to restore El's powers. - Despite being fired from his position in the military, Owens was still a DOE member and also had connections to the FBI (Ellen Stinson and other agents), and he used his power to clandestinely provide Brenner with the necessary resources to establish the NINA Project. For the program to be sanctioned, he had to compromise his principles, and risk his life and that of his family. Something worth noting is that in the episode 7 script, the dialogue where Owens expresses his disappointment with NINA's progress is a little different: I've given you all the resources you've asked for, i've given you your people, i've compromised my principles, i've risked my life, my family's life, all because you assured me this would work. That this was the only way. — Sam Owens By "i've given you your people" we can confirm that Owens gave to Brenner his old HNL staff, who as we saw in S4E8, were loyal to him. And we can also confirm by Sam's words that he had to give Brenner resources, meaning, wherever Brenner was after the events oF S1, he was left with no resources and access to his old staff. - Owens and Brenner would establish NINA in the same abandoned Silo in Nevada where Owens presumably locked away all the video tapes and documents from HNL. THE FACTION CONFLICT - After Owens' dismissal, Sullivan apparently became the responsible for monitoring Hawkins and maintaining the security in the town. - In March 1986, a supernatural murder in Hawkins comes to Sullivan's attention, and after an autopsy is performed by Army medical doctors, Sullivan concludes that the murder was done remotely, which tied in with the rumors about Eleven being alive and getting help from someone within the U.S. government who he, and probably other operatives within the Pentagon believed was Sam Owens. - Upon that conclusion, Sullivan would begin a clandestine military operation in order to investigate Eleven's whereabouts, and this leads him to Owens. - Something worth noting is that when we are first introduced to Sullivan, he arrives in Indiana in an U.S. Army helicopter to investigate the circumstances of an unusual murder, but when he begins his operation to hunt down Eleven, he goes to Ruth, Nevada in an unmarked black helicopter, alluding to the fact that this is a clandestine military operation: Sullivan arrives in Indiana Sullivan leaves Owens' residence in Nevada Something interesting about the scene where Sullivan visits Owens that adds some information on what the U.S. government has been up to is the dialogue between Sullivan and Owens from this audition tape which is a bit different from the dialogue from the show: There were no signs of an attacker. No bruises, no signs of any struggle. It's as if her attacker was a ghost. — Lt. Colonel SullivanSo what is this, really? I mean, why are you here? all of the sudden you want to help again? — Sam Owens Dr. Owens, 30 civilians died last year, a foreign government invaded our country all under your watch. There had to be consequences, you've got to understand that — Lt. Colonel Sullivan Owens' question implies that Sullivan has been helping him at some point, probably in monitoring Hawkins like a mentioned before, which would explain how he knew so much about what has happened there all this years. And Sullivan's response implies that after Owens got fired, it became his responsability to maintain security in Hawkins, which is why he was there, asking Owens Eleven's whereabouts. - Owens refuses to tell Sullivan Eleven's whereabouts, and Jack decides to do things "the hard way", taking multiple items from Owens' house in order to investigate everything Sam has done and everyone he has spoken to in 1985 and luckily, be able to find where Eleven is. - Owens knew that the former Indigo test subject One was back when he saw pictures of Chrissy's body, and via a DOE intranet, he requests the immediate acceleration of NINA. He makes it clear that their secret program and facility were compromised and that the Pentagon was involved. And for the security of their program, Owens implements a communication lockdown. - Owens uses his FBI connections to have agents help him find Eleven, maintain the secrecy of the operation and protect people closely associated with Eleven who could be found by Sullivan. Some of those agents are Ellen Stinson, who seems to be Owens' right hand, Agent Harmon, and Agent Wallace. - In the meantime, Sullivan/the Pentagon was able to find out that Owens moved Eleven to Lenora Hills, CA, and would eventually send a group of agents/soldiers to find her. - After finding Eleven with a group of agents and convicing her to go with him in order to get her powers back, Owens takes El to the Silo Lab while Agents Harmon and Wallace would stay with Mike, Jonathan and Will to protect them, and Agent Stinson would be closely monitoring Hawkins with 2 more agents. - Sullivan, after a shootout in the Byers' house takes Agent Wallace to a black site to torture him in order to find out where Eleven was, and after a long time of torture, Wallace gave away Eleven's location. - After NINA succeeded in restoring Eleven's abilities, Owens, believing she was ready, would call Stinson to have her prepare the transit from Nevada to Hawkins, Indiana through her connections at Nellis. - Brenner would eventually betray Owens and considered killing him in order to stop Eleven from leaving the Silo Lab. After the conflict between Owens and Brenner, the Pentagon finally arrives at the location revealed by Agent Wallace and a conflict between the U.S army and the MP soldiers resulted in the death of Brenner, his men and all the scientists in the Silo Lab, except Owens. - Eleven escapes the Pentagon with her friends, and we see Sullivan and some of his soldiers for the last time in S4, in the Nevada desert. Episodes 8 and 9 made it clear that El still needs to hide and Sullivan's faction is still after her. It's worth mentioning that Sullivan was the only villain in ST4 not to be killed or at least injured, so it's almost certain that this guy will be back in ST5 to kick E.T's ass. Specially know that a full-scale TUD invasion is about the happen in Hawkins. POSSIBILITIES FOR S5: Sullivan investigates the video tapes in the silo lab S4 ended without us knowing what happened to Owens and Sullivan after eleven escaped, but we do know that both characters are in the Silo Lab and that Sullivan now has access to a vast amount of video tapes that he would certainly investigate and this would create many possibilities for the Pentagon's role in S5. Sullivan's Mission in Hawkins Sullivan is still responsible for monitoring Hawkins, and at some point he will probably learn about what is happening in the town (which is also where El is hiding now), possibly via the military presence in Hawkins that we saw in the ST4 epilogue. Something that caught my attention was the presence of a Research Lab vehicle on the set of downtown Hawkins, this vehicle never appeared in the show, and it was not mentioned in the script of episode 9. But it makes me think that at the end of S4, the Military is not just trying to help Hawkins citizen after this "federal disaster", but also researching into TUD, which perhaps is an operation led by Sullivan? let me know what you guys think. S1 parallels If we have Sullivan in Hawkins in S5, we most certainly will get more Government vs Eleven scenes, which would parallel Brenner and the CIA in S1. I particularly believe that S5 will have many parallels with what the Duffers planned for the first season of Montauk, ACT THREE (episodes 7-8) will climax with characters working together to outsmart the military, venture into this alternate dimension, save Will, and, hopefully, close this "tear" once and for all. Doctor Owens in 1959 flashbacks Something I found extremely suspicious is that in S4, Owens seemed to know more than we initially thought. He's claimed three victims so far, and when i saw the eyes, i knew... i knew that was him. He was him. He was sending us a message, letting us know he's back. This sentence from Owens confirms that he somehow knew Henry's killing manner. It's plausible to assume that Owens learned about Henry and the other Indigo Numbers after being brought to the lab to "make things better". But I personally believe that there must be a greater reason why he was brought to HNL after S1, I believe Owens was already aware of the clandestine operations that had been happening in the HNL for years (at least some of it) and had known Dr. Brenner since the 1950's. I would even consider the possibility that Owens has been involved in clandestine government operations in the past and that somehow led him to find out about the HNL and Brenner's program. In this interview by The Wrap, Ross Duffer's words about Brenner and Owens' alliance caught my attention because the way he puts it felt like Owens has known Brenner for longer than we think. Once that first kill with Chrissy happens, then their fears are realized and that’s what jump starts their whole storyline. I mean, that is why Owens is collaborating with Brenner, a man he also does not like. He respects him, but despises the man, because he also knows he’s the key to stopping One, to stopping Vecna. By my suspicion, i came up with the theory/fanfic that Owens could have worked with Brenner in the 50's and was aware of what happened in the Creel House in '59. Maybe he even met young Henry and interacted with him after he woke up from his coma. If there's any chance that i'm right about it, i would imagine the Owens and Henry interactions would parallel the scenes with Owens and Will in S2. Stinson becomes the new Owens / Her alliance with the adults Agent Stinson was apparently Owens' right hand in S4 and also the leader among the agents of Owens' faction, being involved in the operations in Nevada, Hawkins and even being responsible for driving Hopper and Joyce to Hawkins. Imo, Stinson has the potential to become the "new Owens"/Main government operative to help our main characters while Owens is MIA. She could also send some agents to investigate what happened to Owens. I have a personal theory that Stinson will join the adults in S5 and help them on a mission to outsmart the military. And i think the "knowing nod" between Hop and Stinson in S4E9 might be a hint of a possible team up for S5. submitted by kauan1983 to StrangerThings [link] [comments] |
2023.06.02 02:40 kauan1983 The conspiracy lore and the dynamic between the government agencies in Stranger Things
| Something that i am extremely fascinated about in Stranger Things is the government conspiracy angle of the series, and over the seasons, i felt that the writing started to give us less details about how the government agencies work in this universe. Also, many details of the lore are still unresolved, and i fear some of them might not be resolved in S5, so I decided to make an analysis of everything that involves the government in the show to create my own version of the timeline of the events involving the U.S. government and gather information to hypothesize events that may have happened offscreen, the occupations of some characters within the government and what agencies are involved with everything that has happened in the show since S1. I hope you guys enjoy the read! PROJECT MKULTRA - In 1953, The MKUltra program was officially sanctioned by the CIA, a multimillion-dollar initiative intended to develop mind control techniques. the experiments would be conducted in many hospitals, prisons and colleges across the US. Hawkins National Laboratory was one of many facilities in the U.S where MKUltra was being conducted - Dr. Martin Brenner was the director of CIA operations at this laboratory. - MKUltra is a real CIA-sanctioned research that was officially halted in 1973. And it was the basis for a science-based horror in the show's lore. But the Duffers never wanted to really dive into it, as the story they wanted to tell was mainly inspired by the Montauk Project and would focus in children with super powers and other dimensions. There is a little talk about it in the official behind the scenes companion Worlds Turned Upside Down: I wouldn't say we had done necessarily a deep dive into it. Knowing that, Brenner would use the MKUltra (which mainly involved psychedelic drugs) as a means to new supernatural kids to be born, just like it happened to Eleven. Virginia Creel's backstory In episode 7, Henry mentions that his parents did "such awful things." and that he "held up a mirror" to show them who they really were, but we never got to see what Henry used against his mother. Whatever awful thing she did, is still a mystery in the show. Also, Virginia somehow knew that Henry had supernatural abilities, so i think it's plausible to assume that, perhaps, Virginia knew it because of something dark in her past, something she believed resulted in her son being born with supernatural abilities and becoming a "broken" kid. The drug element that i mentioned before could also play a role in the origin of Henry's powers and whatever these dark memories of Virginia are. In S4E7 script, we can see that the whole part where Virginia suspects Henry is the responsible for the strange happenings in the house and contacts Brenner to lock her son away is missing. Meaning the writers later decided to add more layers to this backstory that may be explored in S5. The Duffer Brothers have confirmed in interviews that S5 will explore more of Henry's prequel story, and it was recently revealed in an article from BBC that the 'The First Shadow' stage play influences S5, so i'm hoping this means we'll see more of the Creels, specially Virginia. They were able to adjust some of the "things in the play" and said that working on it had given them ideas for the upcoming season five. Matt Duffer added: "Some of the mythology stuff is a little bit trickier, but like Ross said, it's been fun to have the play influence the show, and the show influenced the play, 1960's - THE PROGRAM EVOLVES - The evolution of Brenner's program logically took place during the 1960s, and some of that was already hinted in S2 when we discover that Terry had documents about people she believed were like her daughter. In some of those documents we get to see that Kali was abducted in London, a Cleveland teen girl who was seemingly abducted in Indiana, and a newborn boy was taken from a hospital. The baby was in the care of a nurse who was found dead in her home. - in 1969, Ray Carroll started working at HNL as an orderly. 1970's - At some point in the early 70's, Terry Ives got involved with MKUltra. (In the Suspicious Minds book, we learn that Terry was involved with MKUltra in 1969 but i'm not considering any information from the book due to the huge amount of inconsistencies.) - After Brenner kidnapped Eleven in 1971, the HNL would face charges and lawsuits from Terry Ives but they were denied due to lack of evidence. - In 1973, the MKUltra was officially halted. - In 1974, Terry would try to take Eleven from the laboratory. Brenner ordered Terry to undergo an eletroshock therapy, ordering Ray Carroll to set the voltage up to 450 and then proceeded to electrocute her until her brain was damaged. - In 1979, One succeeded in having El "free" him by removing the Soteria from him. Regaining his psychic abilities, Henry kills all the Indigo numbers except for Eleven who would eventually banish him out of our dimension. After the attack, El falls into a coma, and Brenner doesn't dare bring another number to the lab. Instead, Brenner focuses the experiments on Eleven, who has repressed not only her memories of the past events but also her powers after waking up from her coma. Brenner knew that Eleven's abilities weren't lost but needed a "spark" to be restored. 1983 - Brenner believed that One was somewhere out there, "hiding in the darkness", and in 1983, after Eleven's powers were restored, Brenner would eventually use her abilities to find him. - In one experiment, El hears a strange sound that would get Brenner's attention. Despite El getting scared and the experiment being aborted, Brenner would repeat the experiment with the intention of making "contact". - On the night of november 6, 1983, El makes psychic contact with the Demogorgon in the Void, inadvertentely creating TUD, opening the mothergate and unleashing the monster. She eventually escaped the HNL that night. - On the next day, Brenner and the CIA receive a visit from agents that according to the S1E1 script were NSA. CIA and NSA agents would eventually work together to find Eleven and cover up anything that would compromise the secrecy of their clandestine operation. - Brenner and his team of agents along with MPs would go to the Hawkins Middle School in order to find Eleven after Hopper revealed her location. For their surprise, the Demogorgon appears in the school, distracting the agents and MPs, allowing the kids to run away from the CIA with Eleven. Brenner is brutally attacked by the Demogorgon, but survives the attack. - After the events in the school, we see hopper entering a black sedan with CIA agents. - CIA agents go to the Wheelers House searching for Eleven. This is the last time we see Brenner's men in the show. In the next season, the HNL would have a new director and a new staff. - In a clipping at Hawkins Police Station, there's information on the aftermath of the events in november, 1983, where we learn that Joyce Byers publicy alleged that Will was the subject of a secret government program. Joyce's allegation comes amidst the investigation into the past allegations of the lab's involvement with mind control experiments (MKUltra). - As to where Brenner and his entire staff were after the events in november, it is unknown, but i suspect Owens knew about what happened to them as in S2 he seems to be certain that Brenner's men were gone. The point is, mistakes have been made. Yes. Abundant mistakes, but, the men involved with those mistakes, the ones responsible for what happened to your brother and Miss Holland's death, they're gone. They're gone, and for better for worse, i'm the schmuck they brought in to make things better. — Sam Owens I've come to suspect that after the events of November '83, when the entire HNL staff was replaced, everything documented/recorded about the CIA's clandestine operations was securely locked away by CIA or DOE operatives, likely in the decommissioned Nevada Silo. (One alternate possibility is that those documents and recordings were stored in the Silo after the HNL was closed in december, 1984) Something that I find interesting is that both the Silo Lab and Owens' residence are located in Nevada, and in S4E5, when Eleven is taken to the Silo, originally the titles "Ruth, Nevada" appeared on the screen, that was later removed, but it implies that both the Silo and Owens' residence were close. This leads me to suspect that long before Owens and Brenner conceived of the NINA program, Owens already knew about the abandoned Silo in Nevada and decided to used it to store every TOP-SECRET documents/recordings of the CIA operations at HNL: https://preview.redd.it/xh9e7lxqye3b1.png?width=1334&format=png&auto=webp&v=enabled&s=eafda108e43adbb8ff115ac586a13add1f1e8442 One interesting detail is that the idea of the government securely locking away videotapes is something the Duffers planned for their original Montauk conception, which most of it was a prototype for what we've seen in Stranger Things. In The Montauk Experiment, the O.S.S. would securely lock away film cannisters with recordings of everything that happened in Camp Hero after the experiments ended in a blood-soaked event. Details in the document below: The logline for 'The Montauk Experiment' DOCTOR SAM OWENS' POSITION IN THE U.S. GOVERNMENT - Sam Owens is a high-ranking member within U.S. Department of Energy as mentioned in the first official description of his character. Sometime between late 1983 and early 1984 he would be brought to HNL on a ‘clean-up’ assignment, tasked with containing the mess left by the CIA in 1983 and making things better. - As I previously mentioned, Owens may have been responsible for locking away all the documented CIA experimentation at HNL, and he also may have known the whereabouts of Brenner and other scientists and CIA operatives who worked with him all along. I would even assume that Owens and Brenner may have been in contact all this time. - During his time as director of the operations at HNL, Owens was involved in Will's treatment and in containing the spread of TUD. - In November 1984, during the Demodogs invasion, Owens met Eleven, who eventually closed the gate, ending TUD invasion. - A month later, the operations at HNL were officially shut down and the lab was closed after the release of the tape recording Owens' "confession", and Owens decided to help Eleven have a normal life under Hopper's care, giving him a forged birth certificate, and recommending Hopper to "let things cool off" for a year. This, of course, was done without the knowledge of the U.S. government. FACTONS WITHIN THE U.S. GOVERNMENT After the events os S2, in addition to the CIA Clandestine Ops and the DOE, other different agencies were introduced in the story: - US Army/Pentagon that briefly appears at the end of s3 (although we've seen the Military Police in the previous seasons which is a branch of the Army), and would be an antagonist faction in S4. - FBI agents who are presented as friends of Owens and allied to our main characters in S4. SULLIVAN'S FACTION - At some point after the HNL was closed, Doctor Owens, in addition to his high-ranking position in the DOE, also gained some position within the U.S. Army/Pentagon, probably tasked with monitoring and maintaining security in Hawkins after the lab was closed and the military presence left town. Lieutenant Colonel Jack Sullivan was involved in this, and it's possible he and Owens worked together. - An interesting detail is that the arm patch on Lt. Colonel Sullivan's uniform confirms that he's an United States Army Criminal Investigation Division operative, hence his associaton with the Pentagon. - At some point (i assume 1985), rumors about Eleven being alive and receiving help from someone within the U.S. government began to surface within the Pentagon, this would affect Owens' reputation. - It's also worth mentioning that in S4E6, Sullivan seems to imply that he knew or at least believed Brenner was alive. Explanation two, Dr. Brenner's special little pet has gone rogue again and he and his lackeys are now seeking to cover it up. Perhaps in the hopes of selling their pet to the Soviets. — Lt. Colonel Sullivan There's also this interview with Sherman Augustus where the interviewer asks him if Sullivan knows that Brenner is still alive, and Sherman's answer implies that Brenner being alive is something that wouldn't surprise Sullivan, Maybe because it was rumored within the Pentagon too. Basically, there's nothing that Sullivan doesn't know or expect about what's been happening in Hawkins and within the government since the events of S1. I'm pretty sure he knows that there's certain elements... because he says in the dialogue "there's rumors that she's getting help from someone on the inside". So there is nothing that he is not, you know, equating in that situation, he's not surprised. Whatever it is, you have to be a really strong and dynamic individual to be able to go in and try to kick E.T in the butt. — Sherman Augustus - In July 1985, Owens would find out about a foreign government invasion in Hawkins, and would go to Hawkins accompanied by Army/Pentagon forces to deal with the invasion, only to find an empty Soviet bunker. OWENS' FACTION - After the events in July, Owens got fired from his position in the miitary for failing his assignment to monitor security at Hawkins, i believe the previously mentioned rumors about him may also have played a role in his dismissal. - Owens, knowing that El had lost her powers, feared a further re-emergence of the TUD, which led him to begin developing ways to restore her abilities. - Owens would ally with Brenner to develop a way to restore Eleven's abilities, and Brenner convinced Owens that the only way to do so was via a process of re-experiencing her repressed memories in a program that they would later call NINA. It's unclear when Brenner and Owens' alliance started, but i personally believe they knew each other for longer than we initially thought, and shortly after the July events, Owens' looked for Brenner's help in order to develop a means to restore El's powers. - Despite being fired from his position in the military, Owens was still a DOE member and also had connections to the FBI (Ellen Stinson and other agents), and he used his power to clandestinely provide Brenner with the necessary resources to establish the NINA Project. For the program to be sanctioned, he had to compromise his principles, and risk his life and that of his family. Something worth noting is that in the episode 7 script, the dialogue where Owens expresses his disappointment with NINA's progress is a little different: I've given you all the resources you've asked for, i've given you your people, i've compromised my principles, i've risked my life, my family's life, all because you assured me this would work. That this was the only way. — Sam Owens By "i've given you your people" we can confirm that Owens gave to Brenner his old HNL staff, who as we saw in S4E8, were loyal to him. And we can also confirm by Sam's words that he had to give Brenner resources, meaning, wherever Brenner was after the events oF S1, he was left with no resources and access to his old staff. - Owens and Brenner would establish NINA in the same abandoned Silo in Nevada where Owens presumably locked away all the video tapes and documents from HNL. THE FACTION CONFLICT - After Owens' dismissal, Sullivan apparently became the responsible for monitoring Hawkins and maintaining the security in the town. - In March 1986, a supernatural murder in Hawkins comes to Sullivan's attention, and after an autopsy is performed by Army medical doctors, Sullivan concludes that the murder was done remotely, which tied in with the rumors about Eleven being alive and getting help from someone within the U.S. government who he, and probably other operatives within the Pentagon believed was Sam Owens. - Upon that conclusion, Sullivan would begin a clandestine military operation in order to investigate Eleven's whereabouts, and this leads him to Owens. - Something worth noting is that when we are first introduced to Sullivan, he arrives in Indiana in an U.S. Army helicopter to investigate the circumstances of an unusual murder, but when he begins his operation to hunt down Eleven, he goes to Ruth, Nevada in an unmarked black helicopter, alluding to the fact that this is a clandestine military operation: Sullivan arrives in Indiana Sullivan leaves Owens' residence in Ruth, Nevada Something interesting about the scene where Sullivan visits Owens that adds some information on what the U.S. government has been up to is the dialogue between Sullivan and Owens from this audition tape which is a bit different from the dialogue in the show, There were no signs of an attacker. No bruises, no signs of any struggle. It's as if her attacker was a ghost. — Lt. Colonel Sullivan So what is this, really? I mean, why are you here? all of the sudden you want to help again? — Sam Owens Dr. Owens, 30 civilians died last year, a foreign government invaded our country all under your watch. There had to be consequences, you've got to understand that — Lt. Colonel Sullivan Owens' question implies that Sullivan has been helping him at some point, probably in monitoring Hawkins like a mentioned before, which would explain how he knew so much about what has happened there all this years. And Sullivan's response implies that after Owens got fired, it became his responsability to maintain security in Hawkins, which is why he was there, asking Owens Eleven's whereabouts. - Owens refuses to tell Sullivan Eleven's whereabouts, and Jack decides to do things "the hard way", taking multiple items from Owens' house in order to investigate everything Sam has done and everyone he has spoken to in 1985 and luckily, be able to find where Eleven is. - Owens knew that the former Indigo test subject One was back, and via a DOE intranet, he requests the immediate acceleration of NINA. He makes it clear that their secret program and facility were compromised and that the Pentagon was involved. And for the security of their program, Owens implements a communication lockdown. - Owens uses his FBI connections to have agents help him find Eleven, maintain the secrecy of the operation and protect people closely associated with Eleven who could be found by Sullivan. Some of those agents are Ellen Stinson, who seems to be Owens' right hand, Agent Harmon, and Agent Wallace. - In the meantime, Sullivan/the Pentagon was able to find out that Owens moved Eleven to Lenora Hills, CA, and would eventually send a group of agents/soldiers to find her. - After finding Eleven with a group of agents and convicing her to go with him in order to get her powers back, Owens takes El to the Silo Lab while Agents Harmon and Wallace would stay with Mike, Jonathan and Will to protect them, and Agent Stinson would be closely monitoring Hawkins with 2 more agents. - Sullivan, after a shootout in the Byers' house takes Agent Wallace to a black site to torture him in order to find out where Eleven was, and after a long time of torture, Wallace gave away Eleven's location. - After NINA succeeded in restoring Eleven's abilities, Owens, believing she was ready, would call Stinson to have her prepare the transit from Nevada to Hawkins, Indiana through her connections at Nellis. - Brenner would eventually betray Owens and considered killing him in order to stop Eleven from leaving the Silo Lab. After the conflict between Owens and Brenner, the Pentagon finally arrives at the location revealed by Agent Wallace and a conflict between the U.S army and the MP soldiers resulted in the death of Brenner, his men and all the scientists in the Silo Lab, except Owens. - Eleven escapes the Pentagon with her friends, and we see Sullivan and some of his soldiers for the last time in S4, in the Nevada desert. Episodes 8 and 9 made it clear that El still needs to hide and Sullivan's faction is still after her. It's worth mentioning that Sullivan was the only villain in ST4 not to be killed or at least injured, so it's almost certain that this guy will be back in ST5 to kick E.T's ass. Specially know that a full-scale TUD invasion is about the happen in Hawkins. POSSIBILITIES FOR S5: Sullivan investigates the video tapes in the silo lab S4 ended without us knowing what happened to Owens and Sullivan after eleven escaped, but we do know that both characters are in the Silo Lab and that Sullivan now has access to a vast amount of video tapes that he would certainly investigate and this would create several different possibilities for the Pentagon's role in S5. Sullivan's Mission in Hawkins Sullivan is still responsible for monitoring Hawkins, and he will likely learn about what is happening in the town (which is also where El is hiding now), possibly through the military presence in Hawkins that we saw in the ST4 epilogue. Something that caught my attention was the presence of a Research Lab vehicle on the set of down town hawkins, this vehicle never appeared in the show, and it was not mentioned in the script of episode 9. But it makes me think that at the end of S4, the Military is not just trying to help Hawkins citizen after this "federal disaster", but also researching into TUD, which perhaps is an operation led by Sullivan? let me know what you guys think. S1 parallels If we have Sullivan in Hawkins in S5, we most certainly will get more Government vs Eleven scenes, which would parallel Brenner and the CIA in S1. I particularly believe that S5 will have many parallels with what the Duffers planned for the first season of Montauk: ACT THREE (episodes 7-8) will climax with characters working together to outsmart the military, venture into this alternate dimension, save Will, and, hopefully, close this "tear" once and for all. Doctor Owens in 1959 flashbacks Something I found extremely suspicious is that in S4, Owens seemed to know more than we initially thought... He's claimed three victims so far, and when i saw the eyes, i knew... i knew that was him. He was him. He was sending us a message, letting us know he's back. This sentence from Owens confirms that he somehow knew Henry's killing manner. It's plausible to assume that Owens learned about Henry and the other Indigo Numbers after being brought to the lab to "make things better". But I personally believe that there must be a greater reason why he was brought to HNL after S1, I believe Owens was already aware of the clandestine operations that had been happening in the HNL for years (at least some of it) and had known Dr. Brenner since the 1950's. I would even consider the possibility that Owens has been involved in clandestine government operations in the past and that somehow led him to find out about the HNL and Brenner's program. In this interview by The Wrap, Ross Duffer's words about Brenner and Owens' alliance caught my attention because the way he puts it felt like Owens has known Brenner for much longer than we think. Once that first kill with Chrissy happens, then their fears are realized and that’s what jump starts their whole storyline. I mean, that is why Owens is collaborating with Brenner, a man he also does not like. He respects him, but despises the man, because he also knows he’s the key to stopping One, to stopping Vecna. — Ross Duffer By my suspicion, i came up with the theory/fanfic that Owens could have worked with Brenner in the 50's and was aware of what happened in the Creel House in '59. Maybe he even met young Henry and interacted with him after he woke up from his coma. If there's any chance that i'm right about it, i would imagine the Owens and Henry interactions would parallel the scenes with Owens and Will in S2. Stinson becomes the new Owens / Her alliance with the adults Agent Stinson was apparently Owens' right hand in S4 and also the leader among the agents of Owens' faction, being involved in the operations in Nevada, Hawkins and even being responsible for driving Hopper and Joyce to Hawkins. Imo, Stinson has the potential to become the "new Owens"/Main government operative to help our main characters while Owens is MIA. She could also send some agents to investigate what happened to Owens. I have a personal theory that Stinson will join the adults in S5 and help them on a mission to outsmart the military. And i think the "knowing nod" between Hop and Stinson in S4E9 might be a hint of a possible team up for S5. submitted by kauan1983 to HawkinsAVclub [link] [comments] |
2023.06.02 02:13 Jakomus [Partially Lost] British animated series "Living With Lionel" (2001-2003)
Living with Lionel was a series of short cartoons produced for the United Kingdom version of the TV channel Fox Kids and aired between 2001 and 2003.
It starred brother and sister Peregrine and Marla who adopt Lionel, a stange lemutamarin cross that escaped from a cosmetics lab who likes to spit when in a disagreement.
I remember this series from when it originally aired on Fox Kids. It wasn't a 'full' animated series per se, in fact the episodes were short enough to be shown during commercial breaks between other shows like Digimon or Spider-Man/X-Men which is what I was actually interested in watching.
The quality was fairly typical for an obscure cartoon from the early 2000s. Crude flash animation and a focus on gross-out humour. The only novelty for me was that the voice cast was British. Most of the stuff that was shown on Fox Kids was imported from the US.
That's what prompted me to ask about it on
/tipofmytongue recently as I had no idea what it was called. Once I got an answer I discovered that there is no online material for this show whatsoever other than a handful of low quality images.
There was a recent discussion about it on the
Lost Media Wiki forums.
Direct Youtube searches will only return results about the singer Lionel Ritchie or the footballer Lionel Messi. But I think there is hope that some recordings can be found in compilations of advert/bumper breaks from Fox Kids between 2001 and 2003, because as I previously mentioned the cartoons were short enough to fit in a commercial break.
2023.06.02 01:44 ItsJustDelta The Combined Arms Initiative revisited: The story of the secret balance group and the update that nearly was
Good day, Reddit. In response to a recent thread calling me a liar, I have decided to clear the air regarding some “dirt” I have on Wrel. I hate to disappoint those looking for juicy gossip material for personal attacks, but toxic interactions between Wrel and various individuals will not be discussed here. I leave those discussions to the injured parties. This is merely the history of an unfairly maligned collaboration between Wrel and a group of concerned players.
TL;DR
Early in 2021, Wrel asked a handful of vehicle players what improvements were needed to address the poor state of the vehicle game. This team collaborated with Wrel over a ten month period to propose solutions to these flaws and patch over many holes left by the Combined Arms Initiative (for the sake of comparison, the Escalation test group lasted 3 weeks and the Oshur group survived for just five months). RPG’s increased update cadence in late 2021 through 2022 and Wrel’s frustration with an increasingly hostile community meant that these efforts never saw the light of day, despite initial aims for implementation by summer 2021.
Introduction
The increasingly poor state of the vehicle game is something that’s become more widely acknowledged over the past couple years as the flaws from 2017’s infamous Combined Arms Initiative become steadily more apparent. Worse still, the past year’s content additions doubled down on many of the problems created by that update, which has significantly accelerated the decline of the enjoyment found in this domain.
But what if it didn’t have to be this way? What if Wrel had charged a group of talented vehicle players with creating a proposal to clean up the messier parts of their preferred domain? In 2021, these players rose above that mandate and delivered something special, and today’s post will tell their story.
Warning: The following story may sound incredulous at times. Where possible, I have provided proof both in the form of screenshots and links to publicly available discord messages. Where that’s not possible, I’ve provided screencaps of internal conversations. If you cannot access the Planetside 2 Community discord, that’s your problem.
I chose not to tell this story until now since it can be interpreted to portray Wrel in a rather unflattering light. He asked for feedback on the vehicle game, received an incredibly detailed proposal, gave its creators a window for publishing, and then walked back on that. At the time, he was receiving enough flak already for things like Oshur,
Arsenal’s NC bias, and CTF, and I had no desire to add more fuel to the fire. With Wrel gone and no successor presented, it’s time to let the truth be free.
Some of you are likely going to read this and assume it’s a case of something minor that I’m blowing out of proportion due to ego, such as being angry over feedback provided and not acted on from a one-off conversation in a discord channel somewhere. This is not the case, and anyone wanting further evidence can DM me. There are practical limits to what I can share in a hastily written reddit post without it becoming prohibitively long.
Project beginnings
At some point between January and March of 2021, Wrel began a discussion about the state of the game with a notable
Harasser driver named GroundTrooper (GT). I cannot find this exact discussion since Discord’s search function breaks down when the user in question has thousands of posts, but I do know the outcome. GT came away from that discussion with a mandate to draw up some resistance and directional armor improvements for the vehicle game.
On November 17, 2020,
Wrel asked GT again about submitting a list of improvements. Click
here to view the conversation in the Planetside 2 community discord. GT decided to create a discord discussion group
open to anyone interested, with the caveat that they had the experience to back up their opinions. This invite link was placed in the #armor-club channel of the PS2 community discord and would remain active until the leak.
There were a handful of takeaways from this conversation, which
starts here in the PS2 community discord:
We made a decision early on that participation would be semi-open to the public. Thought was given to opening this group up to everyone, but this concept was quickly shot down. At the time the prevailing community mentality regarding vehicles was
summarized with this meme, and we thought that open invites would result in a flood of biased players seeking to argue in bad faith. As a compromise, the invite stayed pinned in #armor-club until the leak occurred in mid-2021. Players interested could eventually find their way to it, but we weren’t going to go out of our way to make the group’s existence known.
To get this out of the way immediately: Fully reverting Combined Arms was never an option. The legacy system handled edge cases better than the modern one does, but was needlessly complex and did a terrible job of telling players how much damage was actually being dealt by a specific weapon. In the six years since CAI first arrived on the test server, the resist table has almost doubled in size and nearly 50 new vehicle and anti-vehicle weapons have arrived. This makes the reversion process prohibitively time consuming since there is no legacy analogue for most of these new additions.
Project goals
I’m not going to bore you with the specifics of what changed. Instead, I’ll provide you with an overview of what the project was meant to accomplish. To be immediately clear: This was not Combined Arms 2.0, as the leakers feared. It was meant to be a merging of the legacy vehicle combat loops and the modern vehicle combat calculations, with a few improvements where necessary.
Among our goals were the following:
- Make attacks to the rear of tanks more potent
- Slightly reduce the baseline power of tank cannons and certain secondaries
- Reduce chip damage from infantry AV and reward skilled use of launchers with a skill curve
- Overhaul the resistance table to eliminate many fringe cases where certain weapons over perform against a specific target or where skill shots aren’t rewarded enough
- Improve the new player experience by buffing default weaponry for ground vehicles and adding stock loadouts
- Reduce the prevalence of high splash damage vehicle weapons designed for anti-vehicle roles
- Reduce the firepower disparity between MBT drivers and gunners
- Adjust anti-infantry secondaries as mentioned previously
- Revert the Harasser to its 2017 design, but with passive repairs instead of
repairasites rumble seat repairs
The proposal was not merely a list of grievances and vague suggestions for improvement. We spent weeks debating various changes and their possible outcomes before committing pen to paper. I reverse-engineered the damage and resistance tables as they appeared in 2017 before Combined Arms. A team member used those tables to build a tool (the CAIculator) that compares weapon performance against most targets in that legacy era, live play and in our proposal. We used the CAIculator to test out our proposals before submitting hard numbers and the rationale for specific changes.
Here is an example of the CAIculator’s outputs. Our numbers were designed to match pre-CAI hits-to-kill wherever possible, as shown in that image.
The green light
GT, Stroff and I met with Wrel twice over voice comms to discuss the status of this project, and
Wrel was happy with what we submitted. I will not link the recordings of the calls since they contain information about the game’s internal workings that is not meant to be public knowledge, and because people will undoubtedly
weaponize statements against Wrel. This is a post written in haste, and as such I do not have an entire day to dig through the six hours of discussion to find relevant sound bytes.
u/zani1903, in his role as project archivist and an architect of the Planetside 2 wiki, has heard them and can attest to their authenticity. The final document, when posted, will contain sound bytes and more conversation quotes to serve as additional proof of this project’s existence.
In addition to the calls (you can find some notes on what was discussed in the first call written at the end of the leaked proposal mentioned below), there was a ten month text-based dialogue between the team and Wrel. This was where most of the “small scale” changes like the HMG buffs and the lock-on damage type were discussed.
We were given a rough time frame of Summer 2021 for release , though this was subject to change. The New Player Experience overhaul ended up far larger in scope than originally planned and set the timeline back.
Mid 2021: Treachery and Silence
Almost exactly two years ago, a draft of the project fell into the hands of FedX,
who posted it to this subreddit. I do not blame them for their knee-jerk reaction- many of us would have done the same thing. However, they did fail to understand the mathematics that underpinned our new system. Had they understood that, they would have realized I had simply converted the modern calculation system to an analogue of the pre-CAI variation.
For anyone who visits that post, much of what's posted on that document is very outdated or incomplete. The pilot (who will be referred to as Benedict Arnold Junior) who initially leaked the document chose that particular draft deliberately to sow doubt and misunderstanding. The version leaked was the first iteration, and we were on version five at the time. That first draft had been untouched since being used as scratch paper during the initial conversation with Wrel. Benedict Arnold Junior had gotten into a disagreement over minor adjustments to Hornet Missiles, and over time this had evolved into something that had paralyzed progress. I’d made the decision to leave the nerf as-is with the intent to revisit later, but the traitor wasn’t satisfied and leaked the proposal. Hilariously enough, Hornet Missiles would eventually receive a far more severe nerf in the
Arsenal update.
The leak had no impact on Wrel’s desire to continue working with us, but the project was already on borrowed time. I’d made the mistake of continuing on with aircraft and anti-air adjustments instead of refining existing work, and this led to the drama and feature creep mentioned earlier. RPG was busy setting the stage for the
Integration_ update, and
A New Player Experience followed hot on its heels. Wrel was likely nearing the burnout point in an increasingly hostile community, and as such had little time to communicate. The “target window”
moved backwards from summer to fall 2021 as RPG’s internal workload piled up and Wrel
asked us to start trimming parts off . Attempts were made to restart discussion about the project, but the studio’s Oshur project and the roadmap for 2022 left little room for a large-scale vehicle balance overhaul that casuals would likely never realize the effects of.
Wrel walked out abruptly five months after the leak occurred, after an irreconcilable dispute with one member. The project was resigned to an untouched and incomplete state. Lessons learned
If I could go back and do this all over again, I’d be fully transparent with the community to the point of providing weekly/monthly progress updates. Secrecy ultimately did far more harm than I would have liked, and a community aware of possible vehicle changes would have been far more inclined to fight for their implementation. Secrecy did not stop the traitorous pilot from leaking the information, and that leak only served to create undercurrents of resentment against “the chosen few”.
The state of the project in 2023
Wrel’s departure from RPG came as a real surprise, especially since he'd been talking to me about vehicle balance a few days prior. I had intended to complete the project and use it to drive discussion about what needed to be addressed in Planetside’s 2023 roadmap. While there is serious rot within the infantry domain, vehicles (and aircraft) are in worse states and I firmly believe significant iteration is necessary.
Through discussion we may yet find success. As it stands today, completion of the core concepts stands at about 70%. New content additions reduced this significantly, but many of the simple changes such as the HEAT velocity buffs made it into the game. Others, such as the G2A locks revision, were implemented in an overly aggressive manner and need further iteration. This likely will take two weeks to a month to complete.
Though Wrel is gone, and with it my point of contact with RPG, I will complete this project soon and post the final version. Perhaps his replacement may find the discussion it generates useful.
Edit: Formatting errors, and I forgot to mention the ironic Hornet Missile nerf.
Edit 2: Added in a time frame between the leak and the end of the project.
2023.06.02 00:31 QueenofFrogs145 [TOMT] [CANADIAN TV] Weird bugs on a Canadian kids tv channel
So back when the "All the Small Things" Spongebob MTV Music video was found by the Lost Media community last year, I remember looking it up on YouTube to watch it and near the top of the page there was a "Former Lost Media" playlist that had just added the video. I can no longer find this playlist.
One of the other videos in the playlist was of a weird incident on a Canadian kids tv channel, where at random intervals throughout the day, giant neon green silverfish-like bugs would crawl across the screen in the middle of random tv episodes. It was some sort of promotion the network was doing where you were supposed to spot them all. So the video was basically a compilation of the bugs showing up in the middle of different cartoons, crawling from the top left of the screen to the bottom right.
The bugs had some sort of particular name, and that's what I can't remember. Because I saw it in a "Former lost media" playlist, I assume it must've been a prominent lost media case, where the footage of these bugs was considered lost until people were able to find recordings. So i tried to find an article about it on the Lost Media Wiki, but typing in "green bugs on a Canadian tv channel lost media wiki" on Google isn't bringing up anything relevant.
If i remembered what the bugs were called, I would be able to type it in on YouTube and probably find it immediately. It wasn't the name of any real world bug, they had a made up name.
