This is a subreddit for posting pictures or memes involving chubby cats (also known as chonkers). Please keep in mind we do not condone pet obesity, and instead would like to help people who do have obese cats get them on a diet and help them lose weight and become healthier. There are two links in the sidebar to help anyone who doesn't know how to do this and you're more than welcome to ask the community for advice. Enjoy!
2023.03.22 07:37 puzzled4798 my partner was admitted to inpatient bc of depression
I feel a mess of emotions. Relieved, worried, sad, lonely, scared, hopeful. We have dogs, cats and a whole farm to care for. The kids who volunteer keep coming to me with questions, and it just makes my heart ache. He does so much for everyone here, but he's been struggling for so long and his attempts to get help elsewhere were in vain. This week we have had a lot of tough conversations and so many stressors, I'm glad he was able to recognize what needed to be done to save our relationship, our farm, and his own life. It is not the same without him though I am relieved to know he is finally getting the care that he so desperately needs. I am thankful I have a decent support system, friends, coworkers, the volunteers here. Today one of our dogs got loose while someone was riding a horse in the ring (and this dog is notorious for trying to chase them while working, which is horribly dangerous for everyone) and I was in tears running around trying to catch him. Two girls helped me lure him with treats and get him back inside (because of course he just learned how to jump the 4ft fence, of course!) and I cannot stop thinking about how grateful I am for that. I thank god for bringing us here, for these animals, for the people i can lean on. I'm writing him letters to keep him updated, and so he doesn't have to miss out on all the crazy farm antics. Tomorrow is a new day and I pray for his healing.

2023.03.22 07:30 scoobyydoob Doing the bare minimum doesn't make him a good dad.
He's a bare minimum type of dad but still wants to have rights and be involved despite being awful. I'd let him sign his rights away if he'd agree to it. Maybe someday he will and I won't have to stress about him anymore.
He was a shitty father before she was even born - I remember crying in the bathroom after he yelled at me for wanting a $100 ultrasound when I was 16 weeks pregnant cause I didn't have prenatal care yet and never got to see her or even confirm her heartbeat. I didn't manage to get prenatal care till 26 WEEKS cause medicaid was jerking me around and he wasn't helping me out at all. I was so stressed and terrified... Even worried that my baby wasn't alive inside me at certain points. He didn't seem to give a damn.
When the time came, he got pissed at me for not wanting to get induced early because he wanted extra leave to "be home and spend time with our baby"... After she was born he spent the whole time drinking and watching fuckin anime (I now despise anime), barely even looked at our baby, didn't help out with changing diapers or letting me sleep. God, fuck him. Oh, not gonna forget how I had to clean the house (it was a disaster and I was also sick the first week we were home with a bad cold) by myself to let pest control come (whole other can of worms) and had to clean again for his brother to visit despite all the pain from my vagina feeling like it was gonna fall out of my body from the bad tear I got during childbirth that took forever to heal. He bashed me for fucking SLEEPING while my newborn slept and when I exlained I had to cause she keeps me up late - no help from him - and just general exhaustion from all that my body went through and the mental toll motherhood takes on someone, he told me I need to "be a mother and get her on a good schedule".... A goddamn newborn. What the fuck, man.
I also got yelled at because I wanted to buy a few things for her arrival - he wanted to wait for the baby shower and donations. He wouldn't even let me pick out one thing for our baby. Oh, but he could purchase beer every night and buy guns and smokes! I worked till I was 35 weeks pregnant but I didn't make much and didn't have a car of my own, most of my money went to him after he blew all of what he made. I did that because I wanted the incoming money to be seen as both of ours... But he obviously didn't feel that way cause he financially abused the fuck out of me, told me it was impossible to save money, etc.
The drinking & his general lack of interest in our newborn was ultimately what broke me and made me leave. Actually, it was a huge conglomerate of all the bad treatment I had received, too. It's amazing how I started thinking rationally & my brain seemed totally rewired after I became a mother and I recognized the reality of how shitty he is after I left and had time to think.
A day before I left, I told him I was unhappy (baby was 6 weeks old) and asked if he was going to stop drinking because he had pissed on the floor the night before sometime during the night when I was up late soothing our newly 6 week old. He just said he enjoys drinking and finished the rest of his beers, nothing changed. So the next day, I packed up his car and had him take baby & I to my parents.
I had to get nasty with him to even give me $100 every 2 weeks on his paydays (cause he went 2 weeks without helping out and a week without coming to visit her). Only asking for $100 is very generous; he'd be made to pay 20% of his paycheck if I took him to court.
Today he decided to make things more difficult for me. Gave me a money order that I'll have to cash at the bank. He's aware I'll have to walk there, reactivate my old bank account and wait for a new card to be sent to me. He didn't care to ask if our daughter needed anything before screwing me over where I can't even use the $100 till the card arrives - I couldn't even do it today cause the bank was closed by then.
I've been so fucking nice to him. Was letting him pop in for visits whenever he wanted to (he'd usually come less than twice a week, never more than twice a week) till yesterday when I asked him to pick days he'd want to see her... Any days, however many days he wanted. He chose TWO DAYS a week. Fucker lives 7 minutes away, gets off work at 2pm and has the easiest job ever and his boss is super lenient with him (they're best friends) so it's not like he physically can't make it more often. And when he does visit, it's never longer than 20 minutes. He hasn't bonded with her at all.
He pissed me off today with that deliberately spiteful money order, and all the stuff he put me through that I never got to speak my mind about or receive even a simple apology for came rushing back. Especially since he still drunk texts me about how he jumps through hoops for me and does so much for our family and claims to love me... His ability to remain so delusional is baffling.
I told him to start paying me 20% from now on since he wants to make things difficult for me despite me trying to make things as easy as possible for him.
I'm so hurt and angry. Not only did I give him too many chances to fix our family, to get help to stop drinking, etc. but I was so nice to a pathetic extent. During his visits when he was acting like a miserable asshole, I'd try to make things more pleasant, offer him food, drinks, tv, attempted lighthearted conversation, tried to make playing with our baby more fun for him so maybe he'd attempt bonding with her, but he rejected all of it and continues acting like a dick, tries making my life more difficult.
It also scares me that a few nights ago he tried getting us to come over when he was drunk; he wanted to drive drunk with our baby. I will never feel comfortable sending her off with him. I will fight as hard as possible to not let that happen even if I have to move hours away. He has to prove he's making improvements, at least, but I know he won't.
I'm upset that our daughter has his last name. We never married (we planned to but thankfully didn't) so now I can't even have the same last name as my daughter. He doesn't deserve to have her carry on his last name. But if I can't ever find a way to change it, of course I'll show her reasons to love it. I don't ever want her to feel like part of her is tainted or bad, because she's beautiful and every part of her is loved.
I'm just done being nice to him. He burned a painting/letter I made him for our anniversary and posted it online for our acquaintances to see (how mature) so I clearly pissed him off. Good. It's time for him to start feeling hurt, helpless, betrayed, etc. just like he wanted me to feel. Not going to make sure things are so simple and easy for him anymore.

2023.03.22 04:50 Internal_Argument673 Should I quit my full-time job or try part time?
I'm a full time college student who is taking pre med courses while working an overnight full time job. I wish I never had applied to my job because it's incredibly stressful and exhausting, it's an inconvenience to my manager if I ask to resign (as we are normally expected to work full time hours instead of part time), and I would have to leave my 2 coworkers who are so nice and have been needing help for so long. I feel so guilty to resign, if I do then they will have to suffer working busy nights together while being short-staffed or may have to alternate working alone.
It's a restaurant/cashier job and unfortunately, the work we do makes me so tired and gives me back and leg pains easily and it has come to the point where I honestly want nothing to do with the workplace. I know I will feel relief if I give in my letter of resignation, but I was thinking maybe I could help my coworkers out a little by trying to work part time, as I might be less tired working those hours. I will talk to my manager tomorrow and may either ask if it's possible to change my hours to part time, or I might hand in my resignation letter. What would you do in this situation? (I had actually originally planned on giving my notice earlier this week, but I changed my mind as I can't stop thinking how my coworkers will have to suffer in the long run. I have no idea what to do and I am desperate for help

2023.03.22 03:24 donut_koharski What is a broadcast channel and how do I stop notification requests to join them? I’m confident I checked each setting. Thanks.
2023.03.22 01:10 Jean_dodge67 First draft o a narrative timeline of the chaotic medical evacuation /aftermath, combining what has been made public - livestream, news accounts, b-roll videos, helicopter footage, etc. - needs input pls
TLDR This is a crude and rough initial attempt to place many known events into a narrative order with some semblance of a time stamp to them. It concerns the time of 12:50 to aproximately 3pm? or later the day of the shootings.
lengthy intro, feel free to skip this part
You will see I don't get too far on the time stamp part, and I'm sure I'm leaving out known and likely vital events we know of, too. But the sources are scattered and their narratives jumbled as well. It does begin to sketch a picture though, to tell the story as best as I can from the top of my head. I'd like to make this a lot more factual and probably should make it a lot less "editorial," as well. But it is like the old joke, what do you call a thousand lawyers at the bottom of the lake? "A good start."
I'm POSITIVE some of this is wrong. But I wanted to start somewhere before it all gets turned to mush in my brain. I keep notes but later they don't always make perfect sense to me because all the information comes in from every angle and it's spinning like a top, usually as well. . I'm not a historian, or a true crime reporter. I'm an amateur on the internet in this regard, please forgive me and help me get it right where you can. I dont mean to offend anyone, either. Hopefully we are all in this together, to establish the truth here. How can we have any real opinions or accountability or make the best policy decisions moving forward, or honor the fallen, or sue the heck out of one another, for that matter, without first establishing the basic facts.
It's just what sloughed off my keyboard this morning as I woke and once again tried to make sense of what makes no sense. why, ten months on we have to peice this together from corporate news accounts' hastily assembled snippets of B-roll, local rumor, internet conjecture (mine and yours, dear readers), leaks and bodycams edited and truncated by a hired PR firm for the city of Uvalde, and other odd sources coming across the ether and "over the transom," meaning we don't know who told us this.
This will be a partial timeline from a shattered afternoon where almost everyone present was in some sort of a state of shock, yet waving cheap and crude videocameras of various sorts and disordered eventual custody around in back of a school no one paid much attention to before, and that will soon be razed to the ground. And about which NOTHING HAS BEEN DONE other than to board up the windows and wipe up the blood. One important source seems to be a "whistleblower" who may in fact be a "bad actor" working to just help spread out bad news as slowly and poorly as possible, selectively omitting the worst of the worst. Who can say?
It's a portrait of chaos, drawn from chaos. A vision of hell from someone who wasn't even there, but can't stop imagining it somehow. I have little idea why. Some of my friends' children were there, but they were not in the 4th grade. It's probably all none of my business, my only real connection is that my children go to public schools in Texas. And I helped pay for these public records that are so well hidden. That at least means something to me. The rest just seems to spring from common decency and having an empathetic heart. I couldn't rightly say why any of us are here almost a year later but we are. It all started with a bang. And it all ends in sin and tears, like my grandmother would say.
The TLDR is that 21 people were murdered and a bunch of people who were only attempted to be murdered were mishandled by idiot cowards and dragged hither and yon while parents were tackled, tased and traumatized. The rest is just the gory sad details.
Don't read it if you can can help it. Horesman, pass by. But if you must, know this: it isn't pretty and it likely won't fix much of anything. But maybe just maybe it's part of path towards eventual healing or as Senator Gutierrez says, looking forward someday to "a slightly duller ache of pain."
There is no good place to start this narrative, the story of the "Aftermath." This is the wrong place but it's where I began so here it is:
Draft Narrative:
If it was Noah and AJ who ended up in an ambulance with Mayah, it seems like one of them may have originally been on the bus but taken off fairly quickly. The narrative from the lawsuit by the bus driver seems to say a boy was put on her bus but quickly taken off because of the seriousness of his injuries, or perhaps like with Mrs Mireles, the frantic cops seemed to have tunnel vision and couldn't find the ambulances at first and when one was finally right in front of them, they stumbled towards it instead.
It's also related that a dead child was placed into one ambulance, and that's why there were three in the other. Extrapolating from there it's also possible Mrs Mireles was eventually taken off the sidewalk and put in the ambulance with the dead boy still inside, or maybe she was moved to an ambulance the finally arrived from Main Street holding area.
The WP/TT/PP story has an excellently detailed animation of where ambulances and school busses came and went, beginning with the initial two ambulances. But it doesn't say who was placed inside any of them. The lead bus leaves the line at the funeral home where at least two livestream cams had caught the frantic scramble of LEOs to march and carry kids from the school to the bus. I'm not sure how many kids were on the bus. I haven't even re-read the lawsuit account yet.
Finding a sync point in order to put time stamps to the animation and the citizen livestream recordings for us poor saps denied full versions of public records videos is difficult. It seems likely the bulk of vehicle movement animation is drawn from DPS helicopter video and of course the funeral home cameras. We don't have those, but we can see snippets of them her and there the DPS helicopter at least. It's the one with the rangefinder marking and what looks almost like a weapon system crosshairs superimposed on screen. The story itself mentions LEO bodycam as well. Don't forget Crimson Elizondo is said to have ridden the "BORTAC express" school bus and wore an operating bodycam.
But the buses began to move - then stalled - before 1:01. That seems to tell us a few things - the "triage" was perfunctory and swift in getting the kids who could walk - and some who were carried - from the school to the BORTAC Express. But it took more than just one or two minutes, it seesm like it took almost ten to get children onto the BORTAC Express, but less than ten probably. We know one child was so wounded he was taken off the bus and put into an ambulance. likely the one manned by the EMT who treated thee kids, Mayah, AJ and Noah. That's not certain tho.
Two busses in the lead turn left onto Geraldine. Others go right. Were some on a route to civic center? Or to hospital? I need to check routes.
In a sick, sad moment on the Adam Ladezma livestream, seemingly after 12:50 and before 1:01 a US Marshall threatens parents, telling them harshly to move behind the busses or else their kids won't be brought out, and that the present delay is their fault, for standing on the grass off the street north of the busses, blocking no one and nothing. It seems like the scrum of agents are waiting inside, calling and stalling for a path to be cleared for them, rather than trusting that the public wants the same thing they want - for medical aid to be swift.
Some 5-10 minutes earlier the news had spread by word of mouth that the shooter was "in custody" or dead, it seems. The crowd is indeed increasingly distraught, frantic and hostile to LEOs. Some had likely seen a stretcher come out of the school. possibly with the dead child who was locked into an ambulance. And then abandoned, visibly, to some who could see it just across the street, undoubtedly. An air of pandemonium was cresting. No doubt many heard the gunfire at 12:50 or at minimum saw the LEOs n the west doorway courtyard react, after more than an hour of standing around trying to look tough, or whatever.
Then, a gaggle of LEOs, possibly BORTAC and seemingly although not visibly, DPS Crimson Elizondo among them rushes the scrum of children to the first bus, number 17, as seen on a livestream video from the parking lot at a distance in a blurry video. All hell breaks loose. On the door side/ funeral home side, a livestream cam catches some of the chaos as a distraught father is tackled by LEOs who prevent him from reaching his son. The crowd screams in protest, and women begin to loudly and openly wail in abject agony. They've seen THEIR children are bleeding, wounded, in shock, or worse. and all they are told is to "stay back" by the same people who didn't go in an hour ago and get them out.
They should be livid and they should be cursing and shouting, IMO. In some regards, these cops are accessory to murder IMO. A judge will never likely assess that. But they've kidnappend the kids and held them in police custody, arguably but not prevented the shooter from killing them at will for 82 minutes. And they've physcialy blocked those who were willing to immediately intervene.
On the other side of the bus, citizen Adam Ladezma, whose nieces and nephews go to Robb "films" or livestream-captures a child who, on encouragement from his family crawls out the back window of bus 17, the "BORTAC Express" as I'm calling it and is helped down and spirited away from the custody of the lawmen. As you watch, it's likely you feel a sigh of relief. These are poor custodians of children, one is likely assured despite the breakdown order occurring. Anyone would want to get away from their custody and the child readily complies. "When you find yourself going thru hell, keep going."
So there are all these things happening and more, and I'm attempting to put them into a coherent timeline. This is a bad, preliminary attempt to do so but I think the clues exist to do a much better job of outlining the actions. Perhaps the first pass should just be to name all the things that we see or know happened, in whatever order we have. I'm sorta doing that here but not in bullet-outline form, pardon the very poor choice of words.
But as the busses soon get moving, we know the BORTAC Express driver has locked the back door and that she sees Eva Mireles "dead" on the sidewalk being given CPR or at least lying there bleeding. And we know a child is taken off the bus by who she says is BORTAC, I think. She's made her initial turn onto Geraldine and the bus behind her follows her. lead. Does it have kids on it, the #2 bus? Does it have a LEO on it, or instructions where to go? I don't think so. It's just going. There may be a picture of aaLEO on the street speaking to the driver, IIRC, Ill try to find it. The driver wants the heck out of there, who wouldn't? Maybe it hopes to pick up more students and wishes to be closer. Seemingly, no one is put on board as it waits on Gerldine that I can see evidenc of however. It follows the Express off the scene.
The busses move far enough that the #3 and 4, 5, busses can turn right. As they do so, they too seem to stall as a helicopter comes in to land. I think it is the DPS chopper but I cannot be certain. If so, it's potentially one of the things that has delayed the arrival of the medical Air Flite choppers, although that sounds like mainly an oversight or foible of the Medina Fire chief, too. One of the choppers has blood supplies. The end up not getting used at the scene. I'm not sure if they go to the Uvalde hospital, the blood supplies, or back to a Trauma 1 center in San Antonio.
Dust covers the sky and drifts eventually onto the wounded (Eva Mireles, probably, gets covered in it) and and the ambulances that are newly arriving. A famous long-lens photo shows what looks like a 9/11style ash blizzard or. snowstorm-from-hell on the scene looking down Geraldine from the front of the school to chaos, disorder. We move quickly from two ambulances, one locked with a dead child inside and the other overcrowded with kids bleeding on the captains chair, to six or eight ambulances.
As the DPS helicopter moves towards the playground, the camera swings back to the west entrance and the bus lane. A stretcher gurney seems to be going IN to a newly arrived ambulacne. (See the first video WP/TT/PP story) Another gurney seemingly is OUT of another folded low on the ground by the tail of a ambulace. The tail end of the #2 bus is still there but begins to leave.
DPS tactical from all the way up in Austin has arrived somehow at 12:58 (too late, they were always going to be too late for the kids) in the midst of the bungled evacuations. Somewhere before all this they sprint to the courtyard by the west door, choking the passage of anyone. News helicopter seems to capture some of it, as well as news cameras down at the front of the school, and still photogs, too. it looks to all of them like something important is happening. It isn't. Not there, and not with them.
Somewhere in here SWAT from San Antonio enters the mix. I'm very loose on that timing. They're hard to tell apart from DPS tactical or SRT or whatever they are called. Is it them that runs as a big squad? I'm unsure. Nor can I spot where BORTAC huddles up afterwards. I think they stay inside the building because we don't spot them outside, not at tthe west and not at the south. They didn't all stay on the bus they commandeered. DPS Crimson Elizondo did, but who else?
We know ambulances have crawled across peoples yards, criss-crossing like a post apocalypse freeway scene to get around abandoned cop cars blocking the roads. They start arriving all from one direction as the second bus behind BORTAC Express finally manages to scoot off from the front of the school.
There's some sort of "load and go, load and go" action here that we don't have much information about unless we extrapolate what child was wounded how and eliminate the trio of AJ, Noah and Mayah from them, possibly.
At least one medical helicopter manages to land, to no avail at some point. Everyone is racing somewhere in an ambulance. Xavier, to his demise somewhere west of Hondo. Mrs Mirales never leaves the ambulance at the curb, as she desperately attended to possibly at near-gunpoint after UPC cops and attending EMTs have seemingly furiously pumped what little blood she had left onto the sidewalk, because her heart stopped from the traumatic way she was dragged from the room, seemingly and of course her multiple gunshot wounds from an AR-15. The "load and go" kids must also include the teacher from 111, who has first been placed in a cop car, or attempted- he didnt fit - and then onto the tailgate/ lift gate of a fire department truck? Possibly the one in the funeral home lot, which must have freaked the crowd out to witness, then finally into one of the "maze runner" arriving ambulances.
Again, I refer us all to the WP/TT/PP animation for clues to that. Somehow, "load and go" period ends. When? When the ambulances stop moving, whenever that is.
And then, finally, Rangers lock the scene down, even closing the gate to the west door. It's now a crime scene and they are in charge of the investigation. The Justice of the Peace, acting as coroner is enroute to pronounce the less than 18? bodies as dead. Unsure on the math here. Three left the classroom with a pulse who died. 21 died. (plus the shooter, #22). One body was locked in an ambulance. How many left in the classrooms when the rangers lock it down? 22 minus three who died and one who was improperly removed and locked in a (much needed) ambulance. 18 bodies including the shooters, is that right?
Eventually each is designated a letter of the alphabet and DNA sampled on site so the pieces of children and teachers can be sorted and reassembled, or at least distributed to the funeral homes in the right batches. Several are said to be more or less headless. On one, a pair of Green converse with a little heart-shaped sharpie drawn on the toe, that aids in identifaction.
Parents have been told to go to the civic center. Many are going to race to every hospital they can think of, including San Antonio instead. Mothers, fathers and grandparent must all separate to cover more ground, adding to the panic and desperation. Some have been told to go to the high school, but the high school gets some sort of possible gun threat? Again, NO ONE IS IN CHARGE.
On the curb near the front of the school sits Lexi's Rubio's mother and deputy father, utterly bereft. He's been kept out of the classroom but seems to have been told the definite news their child is not coming out. Curious news crews videotape and photograph them in their grief, until the mother of one parent seemingly arrives to join them. Eventually, they thread their way onto the campus to get away from the news anchors assembled by the school sign in the same intersection where Officer Hill had parked to witness Coronado's "wild ride" at 11:31 or so. 82 minutes and then some have passed, as have at least 19 souls? by now, some still fighting for life, the shooter one among the many dead, yet separate in category only. The blood of all spreads to mingle in the footprints and pools of fluids on the floors the gruesome CSI process begins in earnest.
In the queue on the video projector's mechanism, "Lilo and Stitch" awaits the Disney happy ending. Elvis won't be singing the finale BURNING LOVE today. Elvis has left the building. Elvis is deader than Elvis. And the children are going to meet him in Heaven, if you believe what the King does and loved to sing about. "Farther along, we'll understand it./ Farther along, we'll understand why."

2023.03.22 00:12 jotakusan My First DWI Story - Texas, F/28
I wanted to share my whole DUI experience in case it can help some of you just going through this. It is very long, so I split it up into parts to make it more digestible, and so you can skip a part of you aren’t interested in reading it. TLDR; at the bottom.
Some key info: I’m a female and was arrested at 28 with my first DUI charge and received it while living in Texas at the beginning of 2022. BAC came in at .21 and I had crashed my car into the curb when the cops found me. I hired my own attorney and the whole ordeal took 10 months.
Part 1: The Night I got Arrested
I went to a bar I had never been to by myself. I was recovering from COVID that I had tested positive for 10 days earlier. I had tested positive on my birthday and was feeling very bored and lonely and thought it would be a great idea to go out by myself and maybe make some friends or meet someone. Pro-tip for any of you new to San Antonio, the bars on the strip over-pour. I was not aware of this at the time and that was my second mistake. My first was going out without any friend.
Long story short, I left around close but I was so drunk that I blacked out. Usually when I drink heavily, I’ll sleep it off in my car before I leave, but I was so far gone, I didn’t sleep first. I don’t remember getting into my car or crashing it. The first time I came to consciousness, I realized my car was acting weird and pulling me to the left so I got out to look at it. The next thing I remember was having a cop standing next to me and the flashing lights behind my car. I tapped my damaged side skirt with my foot, looked at the cop, and said, “I dunno what happened.” I know, I should have claimed someone I had just met was driving because they said they were okay to drive, then crashed and ran off, but I was too drunk to think that clearly.
Next thing I remember, I’m being put in a holding cell. I didn’t come back to full awareness until I had woken up in the cell. I’m a little bitch, so needless to say, I spent the rest of the night sobbing. I learned that I had denied the breathalyzer and was taken to the nurses room to get my blood drawn. I tried to deny that one too but they had a warrant. Considering this was about 4 hours after I had left the bar and taking into account my sex and body weight, I was probably at around a .28 when I left. Around 9am I was taken to the magistrates office.
Part 2: Magistrates
I was taken to the processing room and asked by a male officer, “what do you have down there?”. Very professional way of asking if I'm a man or a woman... I look like a girl, but whatever. They set me up with a female officer and she had me strip naked, bend over and cough. One of the more humiliating times of my life. Pro-tip, if you plan on getting a DWI, make sure to bring a sweatshirt or jacket because it is absolutely freezing in both the police station and magistrates office. Also, maybe wear some sweatbands to shove under the ankle cuffs. I had a lot of bruises around my ankles when I left.
To save you all of the boring details of how the next 14 hours went, just skip to part 3 from here. Between waiting, watching whatever was playing on the TV’s, and trying to sleep in between fits of crying, I went through the whole processing process. First up was the judge where I was read my charges and given my bond. The bond amount came out to $1000, and thankfully I was eligible for a PR bond. I was bonded out with a $70 fee, but that didn’t mean I could leave like I was hoping.
Next up was getting processed. Finger prints, mugshot, the works. Then I had to sit down and go over my details with the bonds office so I could be accepted for the PR bond. After that was a trip to the nurses station where I had to take a pee test to check if I was pregnant (fun fact, I’m only attracted to women so... no), asked some medical history questions, and tested for TB. I was finger printed a second time for some reason and then spent the next forever hours waiting to be released. People with severe ADHD are not built for being locked up. I thought I was going to go insane.
Around 11pm they called my name for release where I was given my inmate card and told me this would be used as my ID since I wasn’t getting my license back. Then I was brought into the exit room and received my things from the desk. Wallet, keys, shoe laces, and phone. My phone was dead and no one had a charger, and with my car being impounded, I had no way to get home. Thankfully I made friends with another lady that had been locked up and her family was picking her up. She offered to get me a ride home.
Part 3: Impounded Vehicle, Damage, and Hiring a Lawyer
The next morning, I called a lawyer one of my friends used for her DWI and set an appointment for that afternoon, then took an Uber straight to the impound lot. I got to my car and saw the full extent of the damage in the light. It was bad. I clearly got into a fight with a curb and somehow got damage on the top of my fender. I never got charged for hitting anyone, so who knows what happened there. Maybe a concrete barrier, considering how much the top of my fender was ripped up. My rocker panel was completely crushed in, stress cracks on my front bumper, front lip was hanging off a bit, both wheels were cracked and tires were flat, and my side skirt had been mostly ripped off. I called a tow truck and he dropped me off at a little family owned shop and they took the wheels off to find the tie rod was snapped, and the front lower control arm and rear control arm were bent.
Suspension repairs came out to $700. I ordered a new set of wheels and tires later that week and left my car sitting in front of the shop while I waited for the wheels to get delivered. It took an entire month to get my car back in a driveable condition because of how long it took to get the wheels. I didn’t have the money to fix the body and didn’t want to file it with my insurance due to the situation, so over a year later I’m still driving a busted up car, but at least it works. Total cost for the parts, labor, getting it out of impound and tow came out to around $2600. I had a friend’s ex look at the body damage and he told me to expect around $3400 in body repair. Pro-tip, don’t get a DWI, they’re expensive.
One more pro-tip, as soon as you get out of jail, go online and get your license replaced. It takes a couple months for your license suspension to go through, so make sure you get a replacement license in the mean time. The cops will not give you your license back. As for the lawyer, he was cheaper than the car and was a huge help. $2700 and he dealt with everything. My advice when it comes to lawyers is get one. Many will offer payment plans so you don’t have to provide cash up front. He made the whole ordeal so much easier and gave me a lot of helpful info, plus knew the prosecutors and had friends among them. I’ll get more into why you need to get a private attorney in later parts. Hiring him was simple. I went to their website and set up an appointment time. Went to his office the day after being arrested, and told him the story. He told me what to expect, let me know what he can do, and we set up the payment plan. The deductible was $200 and he set me up to pay $150 biweekly until the $2700 was paid off. I had trouble paying him back and he said no worries, just get him back by the end of the year.
Part 4: Court, License Suspension, and Legal Advice
If you just got out of jail, be prepared for many months and many court appearances. Thankfully, a lot of court in Bexar County has been moved to Zoom since COVID hit and that is still the case today. My roommate is going through it right now, but for a different crime and with a free public defender, so I will be making comparisons in Part 8.
The first court date is just you stating that you are there and willing to follow the orders of your bond, stay in the state, and all that fun stuff. They ask if you’re present and you say you are, then your attorney will introduce him or herself. The next couple court dates are a blur, just mundane conversations with the lawyer and judge. Thanks to having an attorney, I didn’t have to attend 2 of the dates and he took care of the license suspension court. I was suspended for 6 months and could request approval to drive to and from work with a Restricted Drivers License, but I didn’t want to pay for the SR22 insurance. I only drove to and from work over the next 6 months, mounted my front license plate instead of leaving it in my window, and always drove as carefully as possible. Happy to say I made it without any issues. If you do get caught, that could mean additional fees or even being arrested again if the cop is having a bad day.
During this time, my attorney gave me a list of things to do that would look good to the judge. Based on his conversations with the prosecutors, without doing those things I was looking at 18 months probation and 9 months with an interlock. These things included taking 2 different driving courses, getting my friends and family to write letters saying nice things about me, writing a letter saying nice things about myself, donating to the judge’s favorite charities, and I even went ahead and took a SASSI-4. That’s an exam you take that a therapist will review and screen you for substance use disorder and risk. My lawyer decided not to show that one to the prosecutors when my result for “Alcohol and other Drug Problem” was “High probability of substance use disorder”.
I completed everything he gave me and the prosecutors offered a plea deal for 15 months of deferred adjudication probation (which allows me to have my record wiped 2 years after completing probation) and 7.5 months with an interlock. If you live in Texas and are convicted of a DWI for the first time, you are required a minimum 12 months of probation and have to have an interlock installed for at least half of your probationary period. They say a mandatory three days incarcerated too, but this is not true. The likelihood of going to jail for your first DWI once convicted is extremely low. I talk to one guy at the bar a year ago who volunteered 30 days in jail instead of taking a plea deal. That didn’t seem like an option for me, but I wouldn’t have taken it because fuck that. He said he wished he hadn’t.
Part 5: Conviction
I voluntarily decided to get sober in September and started attending AA meetings. I received my 1 month chip the day before my final court hearing and I think this helped my case a ton. My final court hearing had to be in person. My lawyer met with the prosecutors one last time and they settled on their original deal of 15 months probation and 7.5 months on interlock, but agreed to drop me from a Misdemeanor A to a Misdemeanor B because of my voluntary 1 month completion of sobriety with AA.
Once I was called to the stand, my lawyer stood with me and spoke to the judge about my case and the plea deal. She asked me a couple yes or no questions. Make sure you always say “your honor” when you finish speaking as a show of respect. The judge will take your respect of them into account. When all was said and done, and this is why I say having a lawyer is very helpful, I pleaded no contest and the judge sentenced me to 12 months of probation because in her words, “that’s as low as I can go”, which told me she would have gone lower if she could, 6 months on interlock, and agreed to dropping me to a misdemeanor B. I wanted to bear hug my lawyer after we left the court. Thanks to him and to my efforts based on his recommendations, and my personal decision to attend AA and get sober, I was dropped from 18 months of probation and 9 months on interlock to just 12 months of deferred adjudication probation and 6 months of an interlock. I am so thankful to the judge for having some mercy on me.
After court, I went to the probation office to get registered, and my first meeting was scheduled for a month later.
Part 6: Probation
Since I had completed all of those things my lawyer suggested I do (all except the donating to the judges charity because I was broke), I had the certification already completed for the mandatory classes. Also, and this one is weird and totally up to the judge, because I was vaccinated for COVID, she dropped 20 hours from my 45 hours of community service. I don’t know why, but I’m not complaining.
My first probation meeting went well. I seem to have a good PO. She did make me aware that I had to give 3 months notice for any planned travel outside of the state, but I travel for work frequently, and usually only get 3 days to 2 weeks notice before I have to fly out, and I work outside of the country on occasion. I contacted my lawyer and he was able to get the judge to approve an Order for Travel, allowing me only 48 hours notice to my PO if I am traveling anywhere inside or outside of the country for work with a mandatory drug test within 24 hours of returning home. Once again, thank you lawyer. A free attorney would have taken months to get this approved, but it only took my attorney a week.
I’m nearly half way through my 12 months of probation, and so far I haven’t had any issues. Every drug test is clean, my certification was approved, she set me up to do my community service at the animal shelter, and that’s it! Almost… I did have to take an alcohol and drug evaluation and, like the SASSI, the counselor who evaluated me, said I have a high probability of a substance use disorder. Pro-tip, if you had a beer while on probation, even if it was just one, don’t admit that… She talked me up and was being super friendly, then asked when the last time I purchased alcohol was and my dumbass admitted to having a beer with some pizza earlier that month. Now, I have to complete a month long $500 outpatient substance abuse treatment program. I start that next week.
Part 7: Interlock
Per my plea deal, I have to have an interlock installed on my car for 6 months and had a month after my court date to get it installed. I shopped around and ultimately went with SmartStart because they had the closest location to me. That was the only reason. The reviews for every company are all equally bad. I’ve had it for almost 5 months, and I can genuinely say this is the worst part of the punishment. These thing drives me insane. I’m required to blow into it 3 times a day, even if I’m not going anywhere. I’ve had to have the technicians fix something with it twice now. The first time it locked me out even though I wasn’t in my car, the second time it kept disconnecting and I couldn’t start my car unless I fiddled with the wires.
I also had someone break into my car a couple months ago, and that dumbass stole the camera. They probably thought it was a security camera, but it is definitely not. The camera only turns on when you are blowing into the device, just to make sure you are the one blowing into it and not cheating the system by having someone else blow into it. You are responsible for any damages to the device, so that ended up costing me $300 dollars to replace plus an additional $90 for the install. That brings me to my next issue… You have to have the device calibrated once a month. Calibration means they download all of the data on the interlock device and send it to your PO. It will record any time you blew dirty, got a warning (this happens if you are close to .025 BAC), didn’t blow when it alerted you while driving, or got a lockout. And it costs $90 each time. I'm looking at 6 months of interlock costing around $1000.
This past month, I started having an issue with my battery and found that the car will completely lose power and I have to adjust the negative terminal to get power back. This wouldn’t be the worst thing ever, and it isn’t the fault of the interlock, but if I get into my car and it has power, and I blow, sometimes the car will lose power when I try to start it. This causes the interlock device to freak out when I get power back to my car, and it won’t allow me to start the engine even though it isn’t asking me to blow. I have to turn my car off, disconnect and reconnect the unit, then sit there for 10 minutes with the battery disconnected before I can reconnect it, blow into the interlock, and finally start my car. This thing is nothing but an expensive pain in my ass.
Just a little over a month left and I can say goodbye to this little piece of shit. Provided my PO doesn’t take a long time to get the request for removal and the judge doesn’t take a long time to respond. That’s my final issue. Even though there was the agreement made in court that I only had to have it for 6 months, I can’t just get it removed once I hit the 6 month mark. I have to get approval for it to be removed and this can take anywhere from a couple days to a couple months depending on how backed up the judge is. According to my PO, the judge is very backed up. It took one of my friends nearly 2 months to get approval to have hers removed. That whole time you still have to use it as normal and go in for monthly calibrations. Our court system is so convoluted.
Part 8: Private Attorney vs Public Defender
Whatever you do, do not use a public defender. If there is any possible way you can afford an attorney, do that. Even if you have to take out a loan, HIRE AN ATTORNEY. My roommate is using a public defender for the trouble she’s in, and it has been nothing but a pain in the ass. They are overworked and will only do the bare minimum for you. My attorney was so easy to contact, went out of his way to help, covered court dates for me, got a great deal with the prosecutors, and gave me tons of helpful advice. Plus he was able to help with the work order and have it approved in a week after I completed court.
My roommate’s attorney is nearly impossible to contact, and when she finally does get a hold of him, he has no idea who she is or what is going on with her case. He’s always asking her to remind him of what happened last, and asking his assistant questions too. He got the prosecutors to agree to consider dropping her case after her first court date and all they needed was her hospital records to review since she was arrested on domestic dispute charges for taking the fall for her abusive ex. She was also arrested on a warrant for missing her court date, which means she is currently on full house arrest. For the past 3 court dates, her attorney has forgotten to give the prosecutors her hospital records.
She also requested partial house arrest so she can return to work but the attorney is dragging his feet on that too. She has now been out of work for 5 months and can never get a straight answer from him when she asks if she can go to work yet. Her place of employment has rehired her twice now, but she keeps getting removed from their system because it is taking so long. It seems this second time was the last straw, because now they won’t contact her back, and she can only get approved for partial house arrest if she has employment and a schedule to prove. It feels like going in circles with this guy, and she’s extremely depressed and defeated, and I’m footing all of the bills because I’m nice and love her. But holy fuck I am BROKE.
Please, for the love of all that is good, hire a private attorney, otherwise you’re probably going to get a shit plea deal, the absolute minimum amount of help, and be stuck to navigate the court system on your own. I regret not hiring an attorney for her, because she would have had her charges dropped back in January if it wasn’t for this shitty public defender, could have gone back to work, and she would have made back what the lawyer cost a month later. Don’t put yourself through that if you don’t have to.
Part 8: Conclusion/TLDR
Anyway, if you made it this far, congrats. If I was helpful in any way, I am glad I could share. This took me a solid 3 hours to write. If you didn’t make it through, here’s the TLDR or a summary for those of you who did read most, if not all of it;
I got in an accident with a curb after blacking out and was arrested for a DWI. I declined to blow, but was given a blood test about 4 hours later, resulting in a .21 BAC. My license was suspended for 6 months because I refused the breathalyzer, although I would still recommend refusing just in case. It’s easier for a lawyer to get a dismissal on a blood test, plus there's a chance you’ll sober up enough to be under the legal limit by the time they get the warrant for the blood test. Make sure to get a replacement license as soon as you get out of jail, because it’ll take a couple months before your license is suspended.
Push for a PR bond if this is your first time being arrested and you have a clean record. The county will pay your bond and you just have to pay a fee. My bond was $1000 and I had a $70 fee. Do not accept a public defender if you can avoid it. Hire a lawyer. If you want all the details of why, you can read that in Part 7. Thanks to my lawyer and his recommendations, my charge was dropped from a Misdemeanor A to a Misdemeanor B, went from 18 months of probation and 9 months on interlock to 12 months and 6 months, and got a work travel order permitted in a week.
He was also able to get me a plea deal for deferred adjudication probation, which means you don’t get officially charged until you complete probation, and can have your record expunged after 2 years of completion. That’s great, because having a DWI on your record can be extremely limiting. You can’t go to Canada for 10 years, can’t rent a car, might not be approved for TSA PreCheck, employers will see it on a background checks, landlords and universities can see it too, and your insurance goes up. Get that expunged as soon as you can.
And finally, I wanted to put all of the costs together, including my extra costs and possible costs for anyone curious of the total.
Car Stuff - $11 for license replacement, $400 to have removed from Impound and towed to a shop, $700 on suspension repairs, estimated $3400 for body work. Total = $4511
Court/Probation Fee's - $70 for PR Bond, $2500 in court/probation fees, $120 for DUI courses, $10 a service hour, so $250 total if I don't do community service, outpatient therapy is $500. Total = $3440
LawyeInsurance - $2700 in lawyer fees, $250 for Restricted Driver License, around $800 for SR22 insurance for 6 months Total = $3750
Interlock - $540 for 6 months of calibrations, $390 for stolen camera, $90 for removal. Total = $1,020
Expunging Record - $600
Total cost when all is said and done - $13,321
Needless to say, I should have taken a $30 Uber. But hey, I've learned a lot because of what I did and there is nothing I can do but make the best of it. You can do this too. This is just one shitty hurdle in life, but you can overcome and move past it with time and effort. Thanks for reading.

| Last year (2022) I read fewer graphic novels and fantasy deciding to focus on completed series and keeping up with continuing series that are currently being written to surpass the Goodreads goal of 365. Thanks to Reddit Fantasy Bingo, I did end up reading a lot of new authors! This is the Asian Authors theme card, the third of 3 Fantasy Bingo Cards (Hard mode, African Authors, Asian Authors), after a ton of research and reading. I have two more cards waiting on two last books from the library. Links are to full reviews on Goodreads. So Satisfied to Finally Finish! https://preview.redd.it/ponb5twew5pa1.png?width=467&format=png&auto=webp&s=b7e04bff50f0cf316fd335f99631949db9b6ef97 First Row Across LGBTQIA List Book - Bodard, Aliette de - In The Vanisher's Palace - 3⭐ The world building and magic system were interesting, as was the final plot twist. But yet, I couldn't bring myself to buy the love story between Vu Côn and Yên. Their relationship while being the crux of the story didn't feel very authentic, and I wanted it to be, so this book was very run of the mill average, from plot to language to execution. Weird Ecology - Stewart, Andrea - The Bone Shard Emperor - 5⭐ A rare instance where the second book of The Drowning Empire series surpasses the first book in every instance. Living necromancy, bone "tithes", revolution amidst a backdrop where floating islands start sinking due to little known ecological phenomena. Ends with a Sanderlanche! Yay! Two or More Authors - Chen, Yu and Others - The Way Spring Arrives and Other Stories - 4½ ⭐ This anthology contains multiple Chinese science fiction and fantasy stories and essays written, edited, and translated by a female and nonbinary team, published in English for the first time. It is a very high quality collection, with numerous extremely though provoking stories. Historical SFF - Divakaruni, Chitra Banerjee - The Palace of Illusions - 5⭐ Unlike Circe or Kaikeyi, this isn't a feminist retelling but a reimagining of the world-famous Indian epic, the Mahabharat, as narrated by legendary beauty Draupadi (Panchaali), the main female progatonist and wife of the legendary Pandavas. The story is by itself already famous and worthy of many adaptations, full of twists, turns, love, magic, morality, treachery, betrayal and battles - in other words, a page turner of a story with the scope and grandeur befitting the word Epic. Let's just say it made me want to watch the TV series adaptation. Set in Space - Lee, Yoon Ha - Ninefox Gambit - 3⭐ The concept and world building are so insanely complicated with the 6 factions and how they interweave, it actually helps to go to the author's page for this handy Hexarchate faction cheat sheet. There's also a ton of math, which I didn't mind too much, but this is a dense read that requires brain power, so not everyone is going to enjoy it. Second Row Stand Alone - Natsukawa, Sosuke - The Cat Who Saved Books - 5⭐ It's too bad this book where a talking cat persuades a shut in (hikkikomori) to go on a quest to save books is a stand alone, as it means no more sequels. This is one of those books that will resonate with bibliophiles because books are awesome, even the exotic ones, and deserve to be read. Anti Hero - Zhao, Xiran Jay - Iron Widow - 4⭐ The author, angry at white washing in The Great Wall as well as the ending of Darling in the Franxx anime wrote this angry feminist chick lit for revenge. If you happened to grow up in a patriarchical society and hate how women are treated, this book will resonate with you. The writing isn't particularly ground breaking, but reading this is a form of catharsis, plus much cheaper than therapy. Book Club - Divya, S.B. - Machinehood - 2⭐ Read this with Fantasy's New Voices Book Club. It's Hard Sci Fi but way too much jargon and way too many concepts introduced. The character work was actually decent, but the story was so bogged down in details and convoluted plots to the point it wasn't enjoyable especially when a bunch of plot lines were just left hanging/unresolved. It's pretty much like dumping a ton of ingredients into a soup hoping they will all work together, when a focused approach with a deeper dive into some (not all) of the concepts would have been richer and more balanced meal because the flavors would have had time to develop. A good editor could have fixed some of that. Cool Weapon - Kagawa, Julie - Shadow of The Fox - 5⭐ Tatsumi carries the uniquely named Kamigoroshi, a powerful sword possessed by the soul of the demon Hakaimono! There's a 9 tailed fox girl, a ronin and a sheltered prince who has done nothing but study swordmanship. The story, despite being full of Japanese tropes, is wildly entertaining and was an absolute joy to read. Loved it. I'll most likely finish the trilogy. Revolutions and Rebellion - Kuang, R.F. - Babel- 5⭐ This is a big idea book that ties the magic system to the nuances in translation, which is shown, not told, in exquisite detail in the first third of the book before it goes into the more exciting politics and revolution arc. The multilingual and academically minded will enjoy this more than others. Third Row Name in the Title - Lien, Henry - Peasprout Chen: Battle of Champions - 4½⭐ Now that we are used to Wu Liu Kung Fu Skating (🎶 those kids were fast as lightning 🎶) the author throws in a new catalyst. Yinmei, heir to the Shinian throne, has fled and is requesting asylum at the Pearl. Cue YA political intrigue and adolescent drama at the Pearl Famous Academy of Skate and Sword. Was a lot of fun and better than the first book, but I hated that one euphemism for swearing. Substitution for Author uses Initials = Set in Asia - Lee, Fonda - The Jade Setter of Janloon - 5⭐ Attempts to find an Asian Authors where the initials were a pseudonym failed spectacularly so defaulted to 2021 Set in Asia square. This is the prequel to the critically acclaimed fan favorite Green Bone Saga, and it's just as great. Would 100% read more books set in this world. Published in 2022 - Patel, Vaishnavi - Kaikeyi - 5⭐ This debut novel is a feminist re-telling of the story of Kaikeyi, the much maligned Queen from The Ramayana, one of Hinduism's two Itihasas (collections of written descriptions of important events in Hinduism). This book is powerful enough I was angry and wrote a passionate review to exorcise my sadness and frustration at the use of religion by men to oppress women in India. Urban Fantasy - Vo, Nghi - The Chosen And The Beautiful - 4⭐ “I had never seen a moon like that before. It was no Mercury dime New York moon, but a harvest moon brought all the way from the wheat fields of North Dakota to shine with sweet benevolence down on the chosen and the beautiful.” Retelling of The Great Gatsby. Nghi Vo's prose is beautiful, it's the only reason I finished the book because I honestly despised most of the characters. Set in Africa - Emezi, Akwaeke - Freshwater - 1½ ⭐ The author is of African and Asian Heritage, which plays into this globe trotting story as protagonist Ada is a child of parents from Africa and Asia. She grows up a citizen of the world having heritage in Africa, Asia and living in Europe and America. The content is graphic, this should come with multiple trigger warnings as by the time I finished this I thought the main character (and me) would require months or years of therapy to work through the trauma. Not for everyone. Fourth Row Non-Human Protagonist - Paull, Laline - The Bees - 4⭐ Fantasy book from the POV of Bees? Wait. Why is this so dark? And violent? And gory? Why does it have 1984 style totalitarianism and Animal Farm type indoctrination!?? Imaginative, violent, interesting. Wibbly Wobbly Timey Wimey - Kim, Bo-Young - I'm Waiting For You and Other Stories - 4⭐ It doesn't involve time travel, but instead utilizes time dilation caused by faster than light relativistic travel as a plot device for two of the 4 stories. The letters across time missed connections love story will both resonate with fans of romance, but the other 2 stories are just meh. Five Short Stories - Chiang, Ted - Exhalation and other stories - 4½⭐ An entire high quality anthology filled with Hugo, Nebula and other award winning or nominated stories. Mental Health - Ngan, Natasha - Girls of Paper and Fire - 3½⭐ The first book of the Girls of Paper and Fire Trilogy gives protagonist Lei, plenty of reasons to suffer mental anguish starting when her mother was snatched away by the Capital in a raid on their village, a fate that later befalls her. The World Building is satisfying with themes around the evils of that world's caste driven hierarchy. Self Published, Indie Publisher - Yan, Ge - Strange Beasts of China - 4⭐ Qualifies for hard mode as the indie publisher, Tilted Axis Press, has done an AMA with Fantasy. “My mother used to tell me, ‘You can’t be sure that beasts aren’t people, or that people aren’t just another type of beast” This mystery bestiary novel is a fantastical tale of the strange beasts inhabiting the mythical city of Yong’An as seen through the eyes of a former cryptozoologist turned novelist. It's like a very specific, specialized X-files, with each chapter exploring a different Strange Beast. Fifth Row Award Finalist - Cho, Zen - The Order of the Pure Moon Reflected In Water - 4⭐ The Novella's premise is plausible with the found family aspect being very wholesome. It is also very Malaysian, with proper use of traditional terms like Tokong (Temple), Mata (literally eyes, but it means Policeman) and Kris (traditional Malay dagger with a serpentine shaped blade) BIPOC Author - Lee, Lori M - Pahua and the Soul Stealer - 4⭐ Hmong author! This book is presented by Rick Riordan, and reading it one is immediately made aware that it is young adult, with a lot of Rick Riordan hallmarks - the young protagonist is a descendant of a deity/god, it is told in first person, there are some snarky remarks and tons of pop culture references. Not as good as Riordan but a fun read. The identity crisis Pahua experiences is relatable to any young Asian growing up in the USA as she has to navigate casual overt racism for being the only Asian in her school. It is her need to "fit in" after a new classmate stands up to her bully that is the catalyst for the events in this book. To the right reader, these themes will resonate strongly. Shape-Shifters - Cho, Kat - Vicious Spirits - 3½⭐ The second book in Kat Cho's Gumiho Series begins with Somin and frenemy Junu doing their best to help Miyoung and Jihoon who are reeling from the deaths of their mother and grandmother, respectively. I don't know how much influence hugely popular K-dramas like Goblin or Tale of the Nine Tailed had on this book, but the expanded roles of the "B" couple and more melodrama made this a much more enjoyable sequel. It even reads like a K-drama, so there has to have been some influence. No Ifs, Ands, or Buts - Mo Xiang Tong Xiu - Heaven Official's Blessing Vol 1 - 5⭐ Xie Lian has ascends to godhood for the third time, 800 years after his first ascendance. He has a hard luck story as he can't seem to keep his divinity (for various reasons) so is sent back to wander the earthly realm to take on tasks appointed by the heavens to pay back debts and maintain his divinity since Heaven's bureaucracy seems to value those who can play politics more than "good" people, reflecting real life. Still, it's impossible not to like Xie Lian as he is at the core, a good person that the reader immediately wants to root for. First of 8 volumes, LGBTQ content, lots of drama, MXTX knows how to tell a great story. Family Matters - Chang, K-Ming - Bestiary - 2½⭐ Loosely based on Taiwanese Tayal legends, three generations in a single family are tied together by their possession of the tiger spirit. The writing is inconsistent, at times prosaic, at others poetic. I'm not sure if it's translation issues or what. I would probably have rated this a lot higher if I had enjoyed it more, but nearly all the characters are unlikable AND the content is too grim dark for me. submitted by Stormy8888 to Fantasy [link] [comments] |
2023.03.21 23:42 stockings_for_life I might create something beautiful in a week or so.
My SO has mentioned her obsession with animals and wanted to go to a farm for over a yer and in about a week I am taking her to one. Not only that, it has owls (specifically one from Harry Potter, which she likes). I am nervous and she has no idea. It will be her 18th birthday so I want to make that day special for her. I hope I get paid well that time because there is a restaurant nearby that I have already contacted to make a reservation. I will update it on March 28th-29th if anyone is interested.

- While Frank Sinatra's "New York, New York" is probably one of the crooner's best-known songs, it was originally very different. Turns out, we have Robert De Niro to thank for it! Composer John Kander and lyricist Fred Ebb were tapped to write music for Martin Scorsese's 1977 film, New York, New York, which stars Liza Minnelli and De Niro. When the duo previewed the songs they had written, De Niro thought the title track, which was connected to his character, was too lighthearted. Although Kander and Ebb said they thought De Niro seemed "pompous" in telling them to rewrite the song, they took the criticism to heart and ended up penning their new version of the song in just 45 minutes.
- Ferris Bueller's Day Off is my favorite movie of all time, so it's honestly criminal that I've never done a deep dive into some behind-the-scenes moments from the film! John Hughes, known for his teen movies, ended up writing the script in just a few days in order to get a draft finished before the Writers Guild of America went on strike. The script was reportedly so strong that it was barely edited before filming started. The movie is widely considered to be a love letter to Hughes's Chicago hometown and is filled with references to his own upbringing and shots of the city's skyline. In fact, Hughes even gave Ferris the same address as his childhood home, and his bedroom reportedly resembled Hughes's.
- If I had to learn about this giraffe mating ritual, then it's only fair that you do too, okay? Unlike other animals, giraffes don't have a set mating season. Instead, they have an estrous cycle, which resembles a human menstrual cycle, except this cycle swaps blood for urine. When a male giraffe approaches a female giraffe, he begins to rub against her, which she takes as a signal to begin peeing. The male giraffe then tastes her pee to see if she's fertile, and thus, the mating ritual begins. A typical giraffe pregnancy lasts for 400–460 days. Male giraffes typically have no role in raising their offspring.
- In 2007, Lisa Nowak became the first NASA astronaut to be arrested when she drove across the United States to confront a woman who was dating a fellow astronaut with whom Nowak had also had a relationship. About a decade after graduating from the US Naval Academy, Nowak was selected to be an astronaut at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, where she specialized in robotics. Nowak said she was deeply affected by the 2003 Columbia space shuttle explosion because her best friend, astronaut Laurel Clark, died. Nowak told NASA that her children convinced her to continue on with her space career despite her unease.
- Despite what you might believe after watching The Greatest Showman, P.T. Barnum was not a good guy. He had a long history of animal cruelty and was known for mistreating enslaved people and people with disabilities. He even reportedly hated the people who paid money to come see his exhibits. Barnum was allegedly frustrated that people were taking their time during visits to his museum, so he decided to post signs reading "This Way to the Egress" all over the place. He (correctly) believed that most of the visitors wouldn't know that "egress" meant "exit," so when they followed the signs, they ended up unknowingly leaving the entire museum. As a result, many people paid to reenter, bringing home even more money for Barnum.
- Billy Joel's "We Didn't Start the Fire" is essentially History 101 in song form. The track name-drops 118 historical events from 1949 to 1989, including everything from pivotal moments in the civil rights movement to details from sports and pop culture history. Joel was inspired to write the song after having a conversation with Sean Lennon, who was then in his 20s, while in the recording studio. One of Lennon's friends allegedly said that it was a terrible time to be a young person. Joel, who was about to turn 40, reportedly said that his own younger years hadn't been that easy either.
- Coney Island's skyline looked a lot different back in the 1800s. The Brooklyn boardwalk was once home to a 200-foot-tall elephant-shaped hotel! The hotel, known as the Elephantine Colossus, was built in 1885 and contained 31 rooms, a concert hall, and a museum. The elephant's head housed an observatory, and its eyes served as telescopes. The real kicker was that the hotel was built several years before the Statue of Liberty was completed, so the giant elephant was often the first thing immigrants saw when they reached New York. At some point, the hotel was seen as gimmicky and lost most of its clientele. Soon, sex workers began moving in. In 1896, Elephantine Colossus burned down and was never rebuilt.
- During Ronald Reagan's 1966 California gubernatorial campaign, he began eating jelly beans in an attempt to curb his pipe-smoking habit. His jelly beans of choice were the Goelitz Mini Jelly Beans from the Herman Goelitz Candy Co. Once the company caught wind of Reagan's love for the treat, they began to send the politician a monthly shipment of candy and even gifted the governor with a custom jelly bean jar. After Reagan's two terms as governor ended, the company continued to send him jelly beans. In 1976, Goelitz debuted their latest creation: the Jelly Belly. Within two years, Reagan's entire jelly bean shipment shifted to include only Jelly Belly jelly beans.
- There are two main groups of whales: baleen whales, which include species like the blue whale and the humpback whale; and toothed whales, consisting of orcas, belugas, and sperm whales. While you probably guessed that toothed whales are named as such because they have teeth, baleen whales have baleen plates in their mouths, which help them filter out krill and other food. Toothed whales also have a "melon" in their foreheads. The melon is a mass of tissue that helps with communication and is crucial for echolocation, which they use to find food and to navigate underwater.
- In 1997, construction on Disneyland's California Adventure Park was halted after Princess Diana was killed in a limo accident in a Paris tunnel on Aug. 31. California Adventure was supposed to include a ride called Superstar Limo, which involved guests boarding a limo and embarking on a high-speed chase through some of Los Angeles's biggest landmarks in order to get to the Disney offices in time to sign a huge movie contract. Riders also had to evade the paparazzi. Once the ride ended, passengers were encouraged to buy mock tabloids featuring the pictures the "paparazzi" had taken of them. Following Diana's death, Disney knew they could no longer debut the ride. Soon, they began to brainstorm alternative ideas to replace the limo theme.
- Donald Gorske, who is known as the ultimate Big Mac fan, has reportedly eaten at least one McDonald's Big Mac every day for the past 50 years. As of May 2022, Gorske believes he has consumed about 32,340 Big Macs. He told Guinness World Records that he typically eats two Big Macs a day, although he revealed that at one point, his daily diet included nine burgers! "May 17, 1972, was the day I got my first car," Gorske said. "I drove to McDonald’s, ordered my first three Big Macs, went in the car, and ate them. And I said right there that I’m gonna probably eat these the rest of my life, and I threw the cartons in the backseat and started counting them from day one." Despite his Big Mac diet, Gorske and his wife say that doctors have given him a clean bill of health.
- Although you probably picture Queen Elizabeth II wearing one of her signature colorful skirt suits, her fashion history is actually quite fascinating! Elizabeth was photographed wearing pants only once during her entire reign. In 1970, she was reportedly interested in updating her look, and asked her tailor for a custom pantsuit to wear during her royal tour in Australia. It's safe to assume that Elizabeth wasn't too fond of the outfit, as she was never again seen wearing pants in public. In order to maintain professionalism and avoid any type of fashion mishap, her dress hems were always cut below the knee.
- In 1986, Clint Eastwood ran for mayor of Carmel, California, in part because he wanted to overturn the town's strict law regarding ice cream sales. Eastwood announced his intention to run for office in 1985 after he reportedly found the City Council very difficult to work with when he wanted to turn property he owned into office space. He also cited a 1929 law in Carmel that banned the sale of ice cream cones as another reason for his campaign. In April 1986, he defeated incumbent Charlotte Townsend. His first order of business? He removed from office all of the people who supported the ice cream ban, thus allowing the sale of ice cream cones in Carmel for the first time in decades.
- Chances are, you read George Orwell's Animal Farm in school. In the novel, a group of animals team up to rebel against the farmer who owns them, only to end up living in a communist dictatorship led by pigs. Although Orwell said that the book was the first time he had successfully been able to blend politics and art, he had a hard time finding a publisher. Several publishing houses turned down the book because they felt uneasy about its political stance. Secker & Warburg ultimately agreed to publish Animal Farm, and the book became a hit and was even used by the CIA as a propaganda tool during the Cold War.
- In 1928, Huey Long was elected governor of Louisiana on a promise of helping people who had been neglected by the federal government. He soon had his sights set on Washington and won a Senate seat. But before leaving for DC in 1932, he had the lieutenant governor replaced by two successors who promised to follow Long's commands. In the Senate, he created the “Share Our Wealth” program, which many thought was part of his bid for the presidency. In 1935, Long was assassinated by a political rival. Despite his death, his impact in the state lived on. In 1940, a study showed that rural schoolchildren not only had no idea that Long had been killed but also believed he was president.
- The Real Housewives franchise put Bravo on the map for its depiction of the wild and wacky antics of wealthy women around the country, but it originally looked like a much different show! Scott Dunlop, the original producer of the Real Housewives of Orange County, got the idea for the show in 1986 when he moved from Los Angeles to Coto de Caza, one of the world's largest gated communities, located in Orange County, California. Dunlop began to notice that many of his female neighbors spent their days shopping and playing golf while their husbands went to work.
- The first meal eaten on the moon included bacon bits, peaches, sugar cookie cubes, and a pineapple-grapefruit beverage. Bacon reportedly had a long history when it came to space travel. It was a staple during the Gemini missions and became a favorite among many astronauts. Despite all of the bacon love, it's since disappeared from space menus. Now the closest thing to bacon is a sausage patty that has to be rehydrated with warm water before being eaten.
- Oscar Gamble, a baseball player who spent over 20 years in the major leagues, was known not only for his on-field play but also for his Afro, which sparked quite the controversy. In 1973, Gamble arrived at the Cleveland Indians training camp sporting an Afro. Although many Black basketball players had Afros, the hairstyle wasn't too popular among baseball players. Baseball was often seen as more conservative, and during the 1970s, the Afro was associated with the Black Power movement. Gamble's hair quickly became controversial. "People took one look at that hair and thought I was a bad guy," Gamble said in 1979. "There were some sportswriters who wouldn’t talk to me. They thought I was some kind of militant, with my beard and my hair."
- In December 1990, Iben Browning, who claimed that he was a climatologist, predicted that a major earthquake was going to hit the St. Louis area on Dec. 3. In New Madrid, a Missouri town located on a fault line, people began stockpiling supplies, while others left town completely. Browning reportedly used weather patterns to make his predictions, although his exact methods were never publicized. Although scientists didn't vocally deny Browning's claims, it was believed that they didn't support his prediction, since it's impossible to predict an earthquake. The earthquake never happened. In fact, the area has not faced an earthquake at the magnitude Browning predicted in the three decades since.
- While kangaroos are known for their hopping abilities (they can jump about 25 feet in one go!), they are unable to go backward because their big feet and long tails prohibit any backward movement. This anatomical hindrance has since been used by their native Australia as a symbol. The kangaroo was reportedly included on the Australian coat of arms to represent the idea that Australia is a nation that is always moving forward.
- And finally, Elouise Cobell, who was also known as Yellow Bird Woman, fought for Native Americans to have control over their land and finances. Cobell was born on the Blackfeet Reservation in Montana, where her family did not have running water or electricity. Her great-great-grandfather notably stood up to the US government in the 19th century. When Cobell was 4 years old, her father built a one-room schoolhouse that she attended until she was in high school. Cobell reportedly took notice of her family's complaints about the Bureau of Indian Affairs, an agency that many suspected mismanaged the profits from land and trusts owned by Native Americans.

2023.03.21 21:59 GingerBug91 Wait time on letter from doctor.
Hi! I am getting a puppy to train to be my mobility service dog. The only problem is I have to have a letter from my doctor stating my need for a service animal for my landlord because of her breed, so I can't bring her home until I get that. I talked to a few of my doctors and my physical therapist who all told me their offices don't write those kinds of letters. Finally, I called my PCP, but because I just switched offices (had to switch insurances) I have to make an appointment. Not a problem except it's a month away and my application has already been accepted for this puppy.
I finally decided to contact my old PCP office and they said they could write me a letter! I was over the moon. They said it would take a few days and they would call me.
It's now been 3 days, and I'm wondering if they forgot or if that's just the normal time frame.
Should I call them and ask or should I wait a few more days?

2023.03.21 20:58 G4bbr0 Is Sycamore Partners involved as Angel Investor to take BBBY private?
| Hey community, Longtime lurker and rarely poster here. Mostly because of karma requirements. A few days ago there was this post in the OG BBBY sub. It shows a screenshot from Pitchbook, which I consider fairly reliable, stating that BBBY is in negoation about a LBO with Sycamore Partners. Here is the screenshot I borrowed. For some reason, Sycamore Partners rang a bell. When you look at their profile at crunchbase, they are, among others, described as Angel Investment. https://preview.redd.it/fjy368he55pa1.png?width=2082&format=png&auto=webp&s=6303225dfe8f6071c37fcba219b6909f1ee4b1e5 Turns out, Sycamore Partners were the ones who offered Toys R' Us a deal to save the chain. https://preview.redd.it/vxr9un1d65pa1.png?width=1483&format=png&auto=webp&s=9d7844539a1509dfb89fcaaa57e7c566cafe0cec Source Not only that, but Sycamore Partners and, yes, Hudson Bay made a bid for Kohl's in March 2022. https://preview.redd.it/k30dk77u65pa1.png?width=1374&format=png&auto=webp&s=16cebec4498d77b5d6b6ffd76ad67ec9810a317f Source. YES, that seems to be the Kohl's where Carl Icahn sent the letter to the BoD about stopping animal testing of their products. There was specualtion that Rycan Cohen's tweet about protecting children and animals at all cost was refering to Ichan's letter with "animals". That means there is a chance that Hudson Bay Capital is not fully involved but that Sycamore Partners is the one putting the money on the table. According to their website, they have approx. 10 billion in capital. I am still trying to find a connection to Cohen or Icahn with Sycamore Partners but I do have a feeling there is one. Why should Sycamore Partners be of interest? Turns out, Sycamore Partners are involved with some activist private equity funding. This article from the Harvard Law School mentions the following: https://preview.redd.it/467caqlia5pa1.png?width=995&format=png&auto=webp&s=53c54f1702aff25841facf1e422a524ad4ec68aa " Private equity firm Waterton Global Resource Management started to use activist strategies in 2018 and pushed for a new slate of directors at Hudbay Minerals after accusing the board of mismanagement. Other private equity firms like KKR, Golden Gate Capital and Sycamore Partners had already applied activists tactics, for instance, by acquiring so called “toehold” stakes in public companies (typically under the 5% public reporting threshold) as a way to approach management and begin a dialogue regarding a buyout." Especially, the 5% threshold details sounds pretty damn familiar to the conditions layed out in the BBBY Prospectus! Okay, but how can we, the shareholders profit from the involvement of a private equity firm? There is the option that BBBY/baby might go private after being bought by a private equity firm: https://preview.redd.it/1s9ru48qd5pa1.png?width=1258&format=png&auto=webp&s=7579d5c44ebe7c19f83f10dd1ab2812c8e45713a Going private would mean complete closing of short positions! BOOM! NFA. Have a nice days everyone! submitted by G4bbr0 to bbby_remastered [link] [comments] |

2023.03.21 20:47 Oldgreg098 June 2023 Study edition (Article 25) tells elders to obey orders & do NOT question the organization. The article also pushes the idea that the Organization & God are one, in fact telling elders to give praise to Jah & the Org. (2 pics posted)
2023.03.21 20:11 Panasit Yes it happened, most part of my stories were real (this post is just a note to myself, since I love to see the shock on people when I revealed how much of the story was real)
The first one I posted was a creepy dog at a rest stop. That was 100% fictional.
The second one was my most successful one:
My online film student kept filming the same dead tree https://www.reddit.com/nosleep/comments/1179o1y/my_online_film_student_kept_filming_the_same_dead/ - A lot of this is real but it takes place in Thailand instead of Maryland.
- I am a filmmaking teacher.
- I did taught filmmaking online.... which was like... a weird experience.
- Students did film their houses because they couldn't go outside during 2020-2021.
- My assignments in the story are exactly that. First assignment is always filming a setting.
- I did get some horror videos, but I sort of asked for them.
- Students kept filming the same thing over and over again is real, but it's not a dead oak tree. There were many, like motorcycles, headphones, sharks (yes, sharks), and anime. I viewed this as a good thing, and always encourage them to do it more.
- I had a student who asked to submit a Let's Play for a filmmaking assignment. I did went to watch him play live on Twitch. Nothing scary happened, but he lost terribly. He found a boat in Pub-G and just crash it on to a bridge killing himself and all his teammates. This was during a tournament. Hopefully he doesn't find this post, I used my real name too.
The third one was:
Ride along with Thai corpse collector during the full moon.
https://www.reddit.com/nosleep/comments/11dgx54/ridealong_with_thai_corpse_collectors_during_the/ So much of this story was real. The corpse collectors are real in Thailand.
- Ben is a real person (His name have one more letter added to Ben, he was a student of mine, not a friend). He's now a pilot, but he was a corpse collector for a while.
- Sam is based on a friend of Ben who doubled as a cab driver. I got into his cab and he told me stories.
- My students do love to do documentary about corpse collector foundation because they were next to the school.
- And the logo being the talisman that ward off evil spirit IS REAL. Google "poh teck tung", their logo is a talisman and they are on cars, uniforms, everywhere for the reason in the story.
- A story of a person going on a ride-along with a corpse collector and was followed by spirit is real in a sense that someone told me it happened.
The fourth one was:
Deleted a Shiny Drowzee for Creeping Me Out.
https://www.reddit.com/nosleep/comments/11052wq/deleted_a_shiny_drowzee_in_pokemon_go_fo - Mister Familyman is based on a real person.
- Yes, he came to Pokemon Go raid when his family member was sick.
- Yes, I was invited to join him in a car, going to a middle of nowhere and raid at night.
- Yes there were some animosity among the leaders of the group chat.
- Yes we had picnic on Community Day. I never joined though.
But unlike in the story, I said yes to getting in a car at night. And unlike the story, I did not delete shiny drowzee cuz I never got one.
A comment also guessed right that I did not use Hypno because it was already used by the Creepypasta.
The fourth fifth and sixth one I deleted from No-Sleep because they have so little upvotes. In hindsight I wished I hadn't done that. I will never do that again. Anyway, one of them I want to talk about here. Because so much of it is real.
12 Rules to Escape from a Death Trap Building:
https://www.reddit.com/Ruleshorrocomments/11dc3hb/12_rules_to_escape_from_a_deathtrap_building/ So much of this story was real! I used to work as a courier and I combined 2 incidents together.
- I really was a delivery driver in Maryland.
- The building where it happened may not have been PG county, I was not sure. Somewhere in DC, Maryland, Virginia metro area.
- I did went to a building where the elevator take me to the top floor and there was nobody there. It was very creepy.
- I did get trapped in a building at night. This was a different building. I was doing a delivery and then the elevator was shut down and the fire exit does not work. I had to squeeze out through a gap in a fence. That was so horrifying.
And then there's my latest story. If anybody read this, please go give it some love.
Rules for curating a haunted/cursed objects exhibition https://www.reddit.com/nosleep/comments/11wyw76/rules_for_curating_a_hauntedcursed_objects/ Okay, so many things in the story is real.
- The community college near shady grove is a real place. There's actually only one college it can possibly be. I wonder if my literature professor will read this.
- I was an art student there and also worked as a student assistant there.
- Yes, our office was the mail room.
- Yes I had to guard the gallery until 8 pm.
- Yes we have a CCTV in the mail room.
- Yes we have to help set up the exhibition.
- Melvin was not real. Both of my art history teachers are nice. I didn't know why I made my tragic villain an Art History teacher, but who else would curate a haunted/cursed objects exhibition.
- Yes we have scary looking men walk from the street and coming to the gallery and we can't do anything because it is public. They don't do anything, they just want to find free food.
I wonder how many people will read this. More is coming. I can't wait to post the ambulance one. That one is huge for me because the part of it that was real happened very recently.
Thank you, I love writing here.
