2023.03.30 18:33 pppppppppppppaal Rocky in DnD?

I’m in the middle of a homebrew campaign and my party has entered a tournament of sorts, at the end the winning team earns the right to fight “the champ”. I kind of want to just make a rocky balboa character but I’m having trouble with a few ideas.
For reference, I’ll probably buff his unarmed strikes with magic boxing gloves or something. I also have thought about a legendary action called ‘the old 1-2’ that lets him take two attacks and if the first one hits the second one auto crits, an ability called ‘I ain’t hear no bell’ that lets him regain half his hp if they get him down to zero, and an ability called ‘yo Adrian’ that does sound damage and gives him +2 to his AC or something.
Thoughts? Dumb idea? Anything else I could add?
My players are all about silly stuff like this so I’m not worried they won’t enjoy it, I’m mostly concerned they’ll just wipe him no problem unless I give him way too much HP and ability

Chapter 18: Candle In The Dark
My boots waded through the shallow stream as I led the way, Starlight Grace in hand.
The caverns leading from the well were far more extensive than the alchemist had suggested. As I directed the tip of my sword into the darkness, its light caught against surfaces so high that I had to stretch my neck to see them … but not the tunnel bats that'd made their homes against the stalactites in this vast underground system.
Their eyes peppered the resounding darkness like red stars against a bleak sky. But while the sheer quantity of tunnel bats that'd made their home here may ordinarily have been cause for alarm, I had other concerns on my mind.
Namely, that the water was extremely unhealthy for the integrity of my boots.
They were hand crafted by royal commission for outdoor endeavours, yes, and could reliably step on mud, ash, saltwater and the hopes of the poor, but this wasn't a downtrodden farmer I was stepping on. It was … water.
Mossy, slimy water that dampened the colour of my boots.
And that was even worse than losing them.
The moment my outfit no longer matched, I'd have only two choices. Find a new set of clothes, or use Starlight Grace to conjure enough light that I could irrevocably damage the eyesights of everyone around me.
And right now, I was missing my wardrobe.
“Did you know that tunnel bats are blind?” said Coppelia, humming as she skipped behind me like a girl playing in a pond. “Those bloodthirsty, murderous eyes? Yep, they're just for show. They actually glow even brighter during the day. Of course, you never see them since they're usually sleeping.”
I glanced up at the litany of red dots, neither perturbed nor comforted by the thought that none of them were actually gazing back at me.
Rather, I simply could not take them seriously in the slightest.
“Bats.” I sighed. “Barely inside, and I can already see this cavern hasn't a speck of originality to it.”
“Eh?”
“It's like peering into the mind of a decrepit baron and seeing his wildest fantasy come to fruition.”
“Barons dream about bats?”
“The ones who have not received an invitation to attend a soirée in years, yes.”
I sadly shook my head.
For all their teeth, wings and claws, bats occupied a different category in my mind than heralds of the night.
To some, they were low-tier monsters fit for training new adventurers and soldiers. To me, they were a fashion statement. And a poor one, at that. Far too many nobles sought to decorate their middling towers and keeps with bats of all varieties, hoping the time-tested mystique would somehow mask the very public decline of their family lineage.
It never did.
The irony, of course, is that any noble house's fall from grace was due to this lack of familiarity with contemporary home design. Why, I had no doubt that if this cavern were put to auction, irrelevant nobles would paw at each other to make this their new villainous hideout from which to plan the usurping of my father's throne.
“Well, if you don't like bats, what about strangler crabs?”
Coppelia pointed ahead of us. A pair of deathly black pincers were briefly sighted, before they disappeared to a chorus of scuttling movement.
“Uninspired,” I replied.
“Decrepit barons stopped using them as pets ages ago, huh?”
“What? No, they still do. They simply taste awful as well.”
“... You've eaten strangler crabs before? The monster variety? Not the, 'Hey kids, Papa's going to teach you about fishing today,' kind?”
“Bland and flavourless. With a mucous-like texture. Highly do not recommend.”
I shuddered as I recalled the scene. There were many things I wanted for my 7th birthday. A horse-drawn carriage in the shape of an open seashell. A choir of my playmates singing my praises for being born wealthier than them. A fireworks display of me sitting cross-legged on a throne while laughing down at the assembled masses ...
Well, actually, I did get all of those things.
But I also got a buffet of the most strangest crustacean. What's more, it was still moving. And it's pincers were very sharp, indeed.
And that's the story of how I survived my 19th assassination attempt, aged 7.
The strangler crab tasted terrible afterwards.
“And water slimes … ?” queried Coppelia, pointing at a particularly reflective section of the wall. “Have you ever … ?”
Upon closer inspection, the shimmering of movement could clearly be seen, as could the mucus trailing behind. Only by purposefully directing my sword away could the form of the water slime be viewed, still partially aglow from the light as it half-crawled, half-bounced away from us.
I stopped, then set my frown directly at Coppelia's inquisitiveness. Predictably, she was already looking highly amused even before I gave my response.
“... Gastronomy was in a highly experimental phase at the time ...”
“It sounds like you've quite a robust palette.”
“Robust, no. Black, yes.”
Sadly, the world of gourmet dining wasn't built on stability. It was on constantly sprinting so that the quicksand wouldn't envelop you. And sometimes, those competing had no time to run. They simply had to leap.
Hence … Steak au slime was invented.
It did not last.
“You've … eaten all these things?” said the alchemist, staring at me in wonder. “Incredible! Although you appear very refined, in truth, you live off the land as much as even the most seasoned adventurer, don't you?”
I had a feeling that this woman was perhaps grossly misinterpreting how I came to be fed steak au slime.
Naturally, I nodded and accepted the praise.
“I … I suppose, by definition, yes, I certainly have lived off the creatures of this land!”
I gave a small cough and hurried ahead, valiantly ignoring both the creeping darkness and the sight of Coppelia hiding her laughter.
“I hope we find what we're looking for,” said the alchemist, somewhat absent-mindedly as she trudged along behind us. “Although right now, I'm mostly hoping that nothing worse than a water slime appears before us.”
Coppelia's sigh practically echoed around us.
“Now, if this was Ouzelia, what you just said would pretty much guarantee something dreadful will be waiting down here.”
“Huh?”
“Rules work differently in the Northern Realm. The power of stories is prevalent in every facet of life, but most often when we're courting jeopardy.”
“I … I see! I'm sorry, I didn't mean to invite peril.”
“Oh, it's fine. Peril makes things more fun.”
“What?”
“What?”
The clockwork doll and the alchemist blinked at each other, each wearing vastly contrasting expressions.
Their conversation ended.
… For a short time, at least.
“Hmm, the water slimes aren't biting, are they?” said Coppelia cheerfully. “Shame, I imagine they're pretty hydrating. Great if you find yourself in a desert. They're like a bouncing oasis. Never tried one myself. I prefer green or sweet things. But I'm feeling adventurous!”
I shuddered to think that she'd willingly consume a water slime. And yet I couldn't bear to warn her against the taste. The memories were too painful to recall.
That aside, she did raise a fair point.
“Why have we not been attacked yet?” I asked, turning my light around the tunnels, only to witness the scuttling form of another strangler crab already moving away from us. “I was led to believe that monsters attacked indiscriminately.”
“Most monsters do,” replied Coppelia. “But weak monsters have a unique flight instinct. It's the only way to survive in a cruel world full of murderous adventurers. They're exceptionally good at identifying powerful threats.”
I raised a querying eyebrow at Coppelia.
“Do they detect your absurd level of physical strength and flee from it, then?”
In response, Coppelia grinned and turned to the young woman walking closely behind us, her wide eyes constantly darting in all directions.
“Hmm, who knows? Maybe our alchemist is secretly super strong?”
Marlena … Marina blinked in surprise, then rapidly shook her head.
“Um, I'm not sure why they're not attacking. But I do have a monster repelling potion in my satchel. Maybe they can sense it … ?”
“Well, whatever the cause, we should take full advantage,” I said. “My attire is at risk enough without water slimes further dampening it.”
I received fervent agreement from our alchemist as we trundled along, free from attacks by the inhabitants of this cavern.
Buoyed by the lack of opposition, we pressed on through the cavern until we entered a smaller chamber filled with a central basin of water. Here, no tunnel bats plagued the ceiling and no strangler crabs tried to give me flashbacks, but that didn't mean there was no life.
It was, in fact, teeming with it.
Long strands of wet greenery blanketed the walls almost like a net, the strands and leaves interwoven like a circus of green as it stretched out from the pool of shimmering water.
“My … how peculiar!”
Unless my studies of horticulture were very much mistaken, this was seaweed—or at least something similar. But these weren't the bedrocks near a shoreline or the wooden joints of a dock that the weeds found themselves clutched against. It was a chamber deep beneath the earth, devoid of even the shallowest hint of the sky or saltwater.
This basin of water was either connected to more than a regular reservoir, or these seaweeds were a unique new variety!
“What a magnificent amount of life,” said the alchemist, her wide eyes taking in the tapestry of green. “It appears to be … well, weeds. But to be found underground is remarkable!”
I nodded, sharing the appreciation. I spun around while pointing the tip of my sword towards each wall in turn.
“Either they don't require sunlight to grow, or they're able to survive long periods without access to it. But how would they come to be here, I wonder?”
Suddenly, the alchemist gasped.
“Wait—look! Look where you just shone the light! Keep your sword away for a moment and look!”
I did as asked and peered away from where I was directing Starlight Grace.
Only then did I notice the glittering in the darkness.
It was like hundreds of jewels lighting up where the light had receded, as though having absorbed the radiance from my sword. Stepping closer, I leaned in and spied to my surprise the clear crystalline spines.
“Arcana crystals,” I remarked. “Now, this truly is a boon.”
It was the crystalline mineral prized among mages, and in turn, shopkeepers. The light absorbent crystals which were a crucial reagent in the crafting of mana potions, a lifeline for mages at risk of suffering from magical burnout induced nausea.
Though by no means rare, it was practically unheard of for a mineral deposit to be discovered so far from the eastern mountain ranges where so much of our mining industry takes place. A discovery such as this needed to be properly documented, and the size and quality of the deposit surveyed.
A rush of excitement coursed through me as I tip-toed from glimmer to glimmer, assessing each shine with a rudimentary appraisal that could glean nothing other than the fact that this was a precious opportunity.
Nor was I the only one to spot this.
“Gosh, what a magnificent sight!” exclaimed the alchemist, her eyes almost shimmering as much as the precious crystals. “Arcana crystals. Here of all places. Beneath Rolstein. I never thought such a thing was possible!”
I nodded. I didn't think so, either. But that was mostly because I never gave Rolstein any thought whatsoever.
“A precious find, and worthy of a dismal climb down a dilapidated well.”
“I had no idea … in all the records I've seen of Rolstein's history, no mention has ever been made of arcana crystals.”
“Ohhohoho! Rejoice, for where there are precious reagents, there are profits, and where there are profits, there are taxes to be reaped!”
“... Huh?”
“T-Taxes … as in, taxes to ensure the building of new roads and watchposts, to ensure the security and economic prosperity of this new opportunity!”
Yes, indeed! The Miner's Guild will no doubt wish to claim rights to any mining operations. But in exchange, Rolstein and the kingdom will receive a share of the proceeds.
If there's a sizeable deposit to be had, then this could become a wonderful opportunity for the lowlands as a whole. Diversification of the local economy was a rare and precious opportunity.
“Indeed, but any merits are a matter for the future,” said the alchemist, her excitement visibly tempering. “My concern is still the present. And so before we turn these precious fields into a mine, I'd first like to know if it can be saved. The starflower ...”
“There's no starflower.”
My blunt assessment caught the alchemist by surprise.
She said nothing, and so I provided my reasoning with an additional spin of the chamber.
Seaweed, arcana crystals, and the granite walls to which they clung. There was no sign of a fabled starflower, nor an exit from this chamber. Our journey had been linear. Had we missed a path in the darkness? If so, we'd need to backtrack in order to find it. Otherwise, this was the end of this jaunt, though it was by no means unfruitful.
“M-Miss Juliette ...”
Then, the alchemist's timid voice called out to me.
I knew what it was before I finished turning around. The bright glow being emitted by my sword was no longer the only source of light within this small chamber.
To my astonishment, a single flower was gleaming from a crevasse opposite the water basin. Even from a distance, its details shone in the darkness like the moon on a clear night, each petal radiating with the intensity of a flickering flame.
It was a single flower, and yet if it were to be placed in the sky, I had little doubt it would be the light that drew stargazers and sailors towards it. The beauty was mesmerising. So much so, that I almost failed to question why it was now gleaming for all the eyes in this chamber to see.
Almost.
“The starflower,” whispered the alchemist. “It's … It's here … !”
“I-Indeed, it is … !”
I was astonished.
The starflower. It truly was here. But how?
Its nature meant that simply missing it with my sword was impossible. Its radiance matched Starlight Grace. Did it function similarly to the arcana crystals, and was now reacting to the light? Yet I was always under the impression that a starflower's strength was in its undying glow.
Why, it was almost as if something covering it had been displaced. But nothing but walls of rock were present around the starflower, with each damp surface covered in arcana crystals and soggy seaweed.
And nothing but walls of rock was still here … even as it moved towards me.
Brruuuuuummmmmmmmmmm.
A deafening rumble resounded throughout the chamber. The surface of the water basin shook violently, while bits of the cave fell around us like the beginnings of an earthquake.
That sound could've been the precursor to a landslide. But I realised as the sound went on that it was more than that. It was a bellow. The very land made manifest and sentient with rage.
A living roar from a creature with no vocal chords, yet had no difficulty resonating with the earth.
It was, after all, a monster born of it.
Brrrrrruuuuuuuummmmmmmmmmmmm.
The shadow of a massive stone golem jerked alive, shaking off rocks and dust as it woke from its slumber.
And I knew immediately from its movements that it was feeling deeply inhospitable after just waking up.
Why, it reminded me of myself.

Blood Oath Pact 8 Question
I purchased this bottle from the ABC vault in Florida recently. The box says Kentucky straight bourbon whiskey, but the bottle says it’s a ryed bourbon. I do not care for ryes. I’ve never tried this bottle. Before I open it, does this have a strong rye taste? Everything I’ve read says overwhelming apple flavors, but before I open I want to make sure I’m not going to be disappointed. If it’s strong rye flavored, I’d rather trade for another bottle. Anyone have any opinions here?

2023.03.30 18:29 Dry_Bandicoot_6519 Morgan and Carol. Are they the most disliked major characters?

I think so. I think they're easily two of the best 5 actors on TWD. Two characters who have been criticized by this fanbase for their decision making while clearly suffering with their mental health/PTSD. Both lost their kids to walkers, both lost themselves in this world & struggled to find themselves again and both struggled with not wanting to kill with the fear of losing themselves again.
I'll just never understand the hate for either of these characters. The hate Carol has gotten in the last few seasons is and was wild. She hasn't been perfect, but people that say she sucks or has become annoying? Come on. She's a bad ass. There's some bad/annoying TWD characters, Carol is not one of them.
As for the Morgan hate, it's insane. He's the OG. The reason Rick was able to find Glenn and his family. Disliking his character because FTWD writers don't know what they're doing and for not wanting to kill? Losing your family, friends and yourself, and blaming yourself for it, would make anyone question if killing is the way to go.
Morgan's without the most underrated character and honestly after the last few seasons, I feel like Carol's underrated.

2023.03.30 18:27 geekythinker From Primary Care to Hospital to Hospice - Aging Parent with AML

Long post I know…My dad has been through the ringer over the last few years. Three years ago he had an infection that led to sepsis (11 days) and the eventual removal of his gallbladder. He was 77/78 at that time. He never really bounced back to 100% after that. Mom started seeing him slow down and some light signs of dementia were starting to kick in. Dad was still working at that time as an Environmental engineer. He retired at 80 and they moved in with us. (Long story but they had to move in)
Over the last two months his walking has gotten worse and morphed into a shuffle walk accompanied by more pronounced signs of dementia with some moments of clarity. Dad has really made a turn for the worse with blood work about 3 months ago. The doctor told him to stop drinking carbonated water as this could cause low platelets. YEP…that doc was an idiot. After we insisted for more thorough analysis they felt it was just their not spinning the blood well enough. But they wanted more labs and for an oncologist to see him.
We went 2 days ago to oncology for a bone marrow biopsy and it was near impossible getting him in and out of the car. Luckily we have a lightweight wheelchair from when my MIL was with us. We got him up to oncology and after reading the blood work and other labs they told us his kidneys were starting to shut down and he has what the think is AML. (Aggressive Leukemia). 3 months ago it was please stop drinking carbonated sodas and now it’s a hospital stay to stabilize kidney function. They did more tests to confirm AML. They recommend hospice inpatient care at this point and say he only has weeks vs months. We’re currently awaiting Hospice representatives to come in and talk to us. My mother is a naturally heart broken. This is her forever partner. They grew up in the same neighborhood as kids. She was the pretty choir / band geek he was the hot shot athlete. They didn’t start dating until after high school but have been married 61 years.
I’m worried about the process of hospice and scared we didn’t get the paperwork in place to take agent responsibility over his care. Not sure if it’s too late or not. This process is a journey and one I’m really not ready for but who ever is?

2023.03.30 18:24 SkiTripsEats From Adventure to Industry: The Fascinating History of Heli Skiing

Heli skiing, or helicopter skiing, has become a popular way for adventurous skiers and snowboarders to access remote and untouched backcountry terrain. But the history of heli skiing is rooted in the spirit of exploration and the desire to ski where no one else has before.
The first heli skiing operation was established in 1965 by Canadian mountain guide, Hans Gmoser. Gmoser used a Bell 47 helicopter to transport skiers to the Bugaboos, a remote mountain range in British Columbia, Canada. The idea was a hit, and soon, other operators began offering similar services.
Over the years, the popularity of heli skiing grew, and the industry expanded to other parts of the world, including Alaska, Iceland, and New Zealand. Today, heli skiing has become a major industry, with dozens of companies offering heli skiing experiences to skiers and snowboarders of all abilities.
One of the major draws of heli skiing is the ability to access terrain that is otherwise inaccessible. Heli skiers can explore vast expanses of untouched powder snow, and the adrenaline rush of skiing or snowboarding down steep and challenging runs is hard to beat.
However, heli skiing also comes with risks, as it involves flying in helicopters and skiing in remote and potentially hazardous terrain. That's why it's important to always choose a reputable and experienced heli skiing operator, and to be prepared with the right equipment and safety training.
Despite the risks, heli skiing continues to attract adventurous skiers and snowboarders from around the world. The history of heli skiing is a testament to the human desire for adventure and the constant push to explore new boundaries on the mountain.
Overall, heli skiing has come a long way since its inception in the 1960s, and its history is one of innovation, excitement, and adventure.

2023.03.30 18:21 Significant-Notice- How will AI change *other* policy debates?

Not debates about AI, no the other ones. For one thing, more ideas and more intelligence will mean more projects. That raises the value of permitting reform, and raises the value of YIMBY. But perhaps the most surprising conclusion comes on the immigration issue, with apologies to Garett Jones:
Which policy issue might decrease in importance? My prediction is immigration. GPT-4 is already passing a wide swath of professional tests, ranging from bar exams to medical qualifiers to economics exams. The service still requires more integration with other software tools, but in the not-too-distant future, the US will have added the equivalent of many millions of intelligent minds (albeit not bodies) to its labor force.
I have long favored boosting America’s immigration flow by about three times, to give the US an intake roughly on a per-capita par with Canada and Australia. This is still a good idea, but it should be done in a different way. Rather than more high-skilled immigration, the new priority might be more lower-wage migrants. The US might want a “bar-belled” immigration policy, which gives priority to AI researchers and engineers on the high-wage end, and workers such as construction laborers on the low-wage end.
The AI researchers, by creating more and better AI, would serve as a substitute for many other potential high-skilled immigrants. But all those new ideas will need people to turn them into actual projects in the physical world. In contrast, importing additional humanities professors from Europe no longer seems so vital when you can ask the AI instead.
Here is my full Bloomberg column.

2023.03.30 18:18 LostCareTaker Humanity’s Potential - Part 5

First Previous
Recounting of First Contact with Species HS-01 - Humans, Sol System, Primary sentient Species in the Star system.
Recounting the events, Captain Invil Ta'Kotian, of the Serdes Hegemony, ally to the greater Federation that makes up much of the civilized galaxy. The nature of this retelling is to best determine the future that species HS-01 may have in the greater Galactic Stage, and whether they are friend or foe.
This particular continuation begins after three members of Species HS-01, David, Sten, and Sasha, have escaped custody. After exploring the vessel and bickering, the team reveals that Sten wishes to not return to a life of fighting angry farmers on Mars. David states his desire to return home. Sasha, however, remains silent during the entire exchange. Captain Invil and his crew are discovered by Hvista raiders, and after divulging the presence of a new species called "Humans" onboard their ship, the Hvista are all but eager to board and fight this new "Super" species.
"You shot us." David stated plainly as he sat in a chair facing Captain Invil. Scratching his beard, he nibbled on the extra food that had been provided. Sasha quietly stood next to him, munching away, as Sten practically inhaled ration bar after ration bar.
"We were terrified." Invil answered.
"You. Shot. Us." David said once more before folding his arms. "I said I wanted peace, I even said I didn't mind playing by your rules, and you shot us."
"You have a prisoner in your presence. I'd assumed you were the same. We don't know you. We don't know what your species is capable of. We were scared." Invil quickly reiterated before looking down. "I apologize... I suppose the silver lining is... Our weapons seem to have no effect on you."
"Oh they do," David said as he held up his right appendage. A massive block of purple and blue covered the area he'd been shot at. "It hurts like hell."
"It's supposed to tear off limbs."
Sten audibly laughed, showing his teeth and causing a number of the crew to place a hand on their weapons. "That's supposed to tear off limbs? Barely an itch."
"Well these are small arms. I'm certain a rifle could do more damage." Invil stated as if trying to protest as the large man only grinned more. "We don't have any on board.
"Yeah and why is that?" David took hold of the conversation again. "Far as I can tell there's just pistols on this ship."
"We're an exploratory vessel. We scout out mining sights, places rich in biodiversity. We mark it down and report back with samples. We're equipped to run away or take a hit, not fight back." Invil sighed. "Which is why I want to apologize. Can you accept that?"
David looked up to Sten who seemed more focused on his food. He then leaned to look at Sasha who signed before pointing to her tattoo. "For now, until we figure out what the hell is going on. But I don't want your men to get jumpy so let me just put the cards on the table now."
"Cards?" Invil asked as he tried to look where David would pull cards from, as the man had little more than a pocketless jumpsuit.
"Nevermind. Look, you were worried about the prisoner thing. Let's clear that up. Sasha, Sten, and myself. Yes, we are prisoners. Her government didn't like what she was saying. I... Killed someone in self-defense. Someone who had a lot of power. Sten well... Yeah well Sten is just crazy."
"I was an actual soldier. Did my job well." Sten grinned as another chuckle bubble up, causing some of the crew to step back. "Too well, ha."
"Sten," David chastised him softly. "We are prisoners yes, but it's a long story. We were part of a larger group and wound up separated. Separated by a very long way it seems. We're supposed to be back home, now I don't want violence between you and me. I want peace. Can you take us home?"
"Or anywhere else." Sten murmured, earning a frown from David.
"I... Can't promise that right now. We're under a situation." Invil started. "If you can help us, I don't see why we can't Shepard you home."
Sasha raised a brow and squeezed David's shoulder. "What kind of situation?" David asked not a moment after she did so. The ship suddenly shook as the clanging of metal rang all over.
"We're... Being boarded." Invil replied sheepishly.
Sten bellowed in laughter, "Finally! Some action!"
"And I guess we're supposed to help you?" David raised his brow.
"They're Hvista raiders. They see you as a rivals and want to fight you." Invil sighed, his ears drooping to a defeated position.
"Why do they want to fight us?" Sten asked curiously as he folded his arms.
"I told them you were here... And showed them you're resistance to our railguns." Invil admitted, causing the humans to frown at him. "I admit this only because... If they take this ship they'll kill all of us... If you fight them off, our chances are much better. I swear to you, David, if you and your humans can fight off the Hvista, I will shepard you back wherever." Invil quickly relayed so as to not lose their goodwill.
"Can I kill them now?" Sten questioned, causing a few guns to be drawn and aimed at him. "Oh it would be so easy."
"No." David stated before standing up.
"Boo, you're no fun." Sten grumbled.
"I can't say I'm a fan of you throwing us at your enemy like that, but if they prove hostile to us we'll handle it if we can. If they prove amenable well... I'll take them over the one that shot us." David stood from his chair and looked down at Invil with an annoyed gaze. "Unfucking believable... Give us weapons."
"No offense human but we can't do that." Invil shook his head.
"Are we supposed to beat the scary monsters to death with our fists?" Sten scoffed.
"Are you opposed?" David questioned.
"No, that's why I kept this," Sten reached to the back of his boots, and pulled a rather large knife that had most of the Aporyions shaking, as the size alone was as big as some of their heads.
Sasha rolled her eyes and approached the Captain. A few guns were drawn on her, but she merely stood before him and held out her hand. Tapping it a few times before making another tch noise, she glared at the Captain fiercely. Invil slowly looked to David. David merely shrugged, "That's her way of saying if you don't put a weapon in her hand, she's going to beat you to death with your own spine."
"You have... A colorful language," Invil gulped before slowly handing over his sidearm.
"S-Sir?" Teema asked.
"Can't say no now," Invil sighed as Sasha examined the piece. With a quick lesson on the weapon, Sasha turned and walked to David's size. She looked up at him with the same apathetic expression from earlier, and signed something. She then moved to tie her fiery locks of red hair behind her, showcasing a number of scars along her cheeks that were once hidden by unkept bangs.
"Agreed. Alright, we'll clean up this mess if they're hostile. Afterwards, we want home. And Captain?" David stated as he pulled up the gun he'd taken from the dead guard.
"Y-Yes?" Invil stuttered.
"You try to fuck with us, and I'll let Sten do to you what got him sent to Deathrow back on earth." With that, David left towards the door with Sasha in tow. Sten grinned ear to ear, before snickering as his gaze went around the room. The doors sealed shut behind them, and Invil gulped.
"Do we... heed the warning?" Another crew member requested.
"At this point... I believe the humans are our best bet. I'm not eager to learn what Deathrow is." Invil nodded. "Continue to scan for Hegemony patrols, in case our humans fail."
As the trio left the bridge, staring down the long hallway ahead of them. They saw at the end came new entities they'd been warned about. The Hvista stood as tall as David and Sten, all held a varying amount of trophies across their bodies. The one with the most, Araxium, stepped forward with a grin. "Humans!" He bellowed as he and his men began to stomp forward. "That is what they call you right?! It is an honor to finally meet a real warrior. Killing an Aporyion in one blow? I am impressed! I hope the data the Aporyions gave my translator is working, I'd hate to not be able to talk!" He shouted, causing Sten to step forward with a grin.
"Oh are you now?!" Sten shouted back as they grew closer. "Not my best work but well, it was fun."
Three of the Hvista paused, tensing up as they gripped their weapons tightly. Unlike the Aporyins, these raiders had brought both blade and railgun rifles with the intent to kill. However, as they paused, an animalistic growl came from Araxium who looked over his shoulder at them. "Whats gotten into you?"
"The eyes... The eyes scream Makorvo, Hunt-Master." One of the younger looking Hvista said as he tapped his claw against his rifle. "Cursed one."
"Bad omen... Don't like," another Hvista said.
"Ignore these feelings, whether it is sick or not it cannot stand against us. Raval awaits the brave." He growled before returning his attention to the humans. David, Sten, and Sasha had moved to varying cover, keeping an eye on them from afar.
"Tell me," David started, "The Aporyions say you can't be talked to... They already shot at us so I'm not too keen on experiencing that again. Would you and your people be willing to take us home? We don't have to end in blood shed."
Araxium laughed and shook his head, his flowing mane rattling with the sound of bone charms clanking together. "I cannot. It goes against everything I believe. We have found fellow warriors, I wish to test your strength. Should you defeat us in battle, and one survivors, we will gladly honor your request, as the Code dictates."
"The Code huh? How does that work?" David continued before signing to Sasha. She nodded and began to quietly move farther off to the side.
"My people are not monstrous, human. We abide by the Code. Honor above all else. Through bloodshed we are made whole. I've seen your strength but for a moment, and I wish to experience it first hand. Should you prove worthy, I will honor your request as a fellow warrior." Araxium stated before chuckling. "Who knows, perhaps we will walk away from this as... Kran," he said before his crew began to laugh alongside him.
"If you want to fight I guess we got no choice... I'm David, Sargent David, UN Prisoner of Battalion 13, leader of squad 7. Whom does my team have the honor of... Fighting?" He asked as he saw Sasha skulking behind them. David wasn't sure how she'd gone unnoticed, but silently thanked that she was on their side.
"David of clan Sargent, it is an honor. I am Araxium, of Clan Orrek. May our fight be worthy of both Your Ancestors and Mine." Araxium grinned.
"Finally," Sten rose from cover and stepped into the open.
"Sten!" David shouted as Sten merely opened his arms, holding up his knife.
"I'm bulletproof! Come at me you cow-" his words were interrupted as a well placed shot to the chest sent Sten flying back nearly ten feet. With a heavy thud, Sten hit the ground, coughing loud as blood escaped his lips.
"Sasha now!" David shouted as he rose from cover. Firing wildly at the enemies who moved to take cover, David kept low and made his way to Sten. Narrowly avoiding several stray shots, David grabbed Sten's shirt and pulled him behind a wall while still firing at the enemy. With luck, he struck a Hvista in the chest, and was nearly frozen in awe as a golf ball sized hall was blown right through the unlucky Raider. "They weren't kidding," he grumbled as he continued to fire from cover, and checked on Sten. "Sten, Sten wake up! Are you alright?!"
Sten groaned and coughed as he sat up. "Y-Yeah, just got... The wind knocked outta me... Did you know those things are bigger than the pistols?"
"You fucking idiot, hurry up I need you in this fight!" David shouted as he continued to fire a few shots before taking cover.
"That'll wake you up, ugh," Sten coughed again before coughing more blood. "I think it broke something."
"I'm going to break you if you don't get in this fight!"

From the opposite side of the ship, Sasha quietly gazed at the backs of the Hvista from her hiding spot. As one on the right slowly was left behind by the others that advanced forward on David, she emerged from hiding with the sidearm she'd been given in hand. Her eyes fell to the curved knife on the Hvista's back. Her speed picked up as she sprinted behind the Hvista. His ears flicked as he tried to turn, not expecting someone that barely reached his chest to be so bold as to charge him. Sasha kicked the back of its right leg, hearing an audible snap that caused the Hvista to howl in pain as it feel to one knee. Sasha grabbed it's knife, leaping onto the creatures back and pulling it back with surprising ease that nearly caught her off guard. Thrusting its own knife into the Hvista's neck she brought up the side arm she'd been given and dumped three shots into the Hvista closest to her. Turning and using the one she held as a meat shield she fired another four shots into the next. The remaining four including Araxium quickly moved to better cover, before half turned their guns on Sasha.
David sprung at the opportunity and opened fire as well.
Araxium merely laughed from cover. "Finally! The Ancestors have blessed us with a real challenge! Kor, Dojek, handle the woman, Barra, you're with me."
Together the hunters spread out to began flanking both Sasha and David in their teams.
As the humans took cover, their guns made audible clicks to show they had nothing left. But not soon after the clicks from the Hvista guns signaled the moment was now. Sasha sprinted from cover with the blue blood covered knife at her two assailants. Both of which happily drew their own knives. Seeing them both charge at once, she glared daggers before throwing the empty pistol at one. Though more of an inconvenience than anything else, it caused the Hvista to hold up its arm to block. Leaving her which just one to deal with. Dropping low and sliding between the other Hvista's legs, she slashed at its right leg, causing it to snarl in pain before it swung around to stab where she was.
Sasha rolled to the side, quickly getting up to her feet before backstepping. The Hvista worked together to slash back and forth, and were relentless. Sasha could only dodge for so long before one finally reached forward and grabbed her by the throat. Choking as she was lifted, the Hvista raised its blade. "The first kill is mine!" It shouted before bringing the knife towards her. Sasha snarled herself and swung her foot forward, striking the Hvista's elbow. It screeched in pain as the bone snapped clean in two, its arm dangling like a limp noodle. The other Hvista would not be dissuaded, as it quickly brought its knife down into Sasha's shoulder and rushed forward to push her back.
The first sound she had made in space, and it was a scream of pain, she growled like a feral beast as the Hvista held her against the wall, driving its serrated blade in deeper. The Hvista growled back before reaching back and drawing another blade. A bellowing warcry caught their attention as Sten came charging from the side, tackling the Hvista and dragging it away. Sasha slumped to the floor, wincing in pain as she held her shoulder. It felt like it was on fire, and she gritted her teeth as she saw the large metal protruding from her shoulder.
Sten dragged the Hvista away before reaching down to its waist. The Hvista repeatedly slammed its fists into Sten's back, causing no shortage of pain. Sten however, fueled by adrenaline, wrapped his arms around the beast and hoisted it into the air. With a rage fueled scream, Sten slammed the Hvista onto the ground, though did not kill it so easily. Quickly climbing ontop of it, he began swinging his fists into its face over and over. Audible snaps and crunches echoed around the hallway as fangs flew from the creatures mouth. It growled, snarled, and swiped at Sten to no avail. It's tail came from behind and tried to impale Sten, but stopped suddenly as something grabbed hold of it. A wounded Sasha screamed in anger as she threw herself on the Hvista's sharpened appendage, holding it down as Sten continued to beat the Hvista to death. A few moments later, and the creatures head was nothing more than mash on the ground. "Thanks little Red." Sten grinned before bringing up his own knife and throwing it towards Sasha.
She paused, shock and fear as the blade came towards her, but turned as it flew by and impaled itself into the head of the other Hvista whose arm she had broken. The creature fell to the ground, dead almost instantly. She turned to Sten, giving him an approving nod.
"Aw, you love me." Sten grinned, causing another irritated tch to escape from her as she rose up. Her body shook in pain as the knife was still firmly in her shoulder. "Stay down little red, I'll give David some help." Sten said as he pulled his knife from the Hvista and rushed to help. Sten stopped as Sasha grabbed his arm, looking down at her confused. She twitched in pain before gesturing towards the airlock the creatures had boarded from. The sound of heavy footsteps gave Sten pause as he gripped his knife tightly. "Ah... Well, that's a problem."

On the other side, David hadn't faired any better. The first Hvista was easy to take down as it charged wildly towards him. His own knife skills far outclassing the beasts. The fluid movements had seen him using the Hvista's own momentum against it, flipping it over before stabbing it in the throat. In one fluid motion he had regained his footing, slowly trying to circle Araxium. "You are indeed a warrior, David of Clan Sargent."
"It's just David. Sargent is my rank." He said, breathing heavily as hunger still weighed on him. The blue blood of the Hvista covered his weapon as well as himself.
"I must say, I am indeed impressed. Perhaps we can come to an agreement." Araxium grinned before readying his blade. "If you survive."
"If YOU survive," a growl came from down the hall. Araxium and David both looked up to see five more Hvista standing there, two of which held a wounded Sten hostage. Sasha was, however, no where to be seen.
"I killed two of them before they jumped me, ha," Sten said happily before the butt of a railgun slammed into his back, causing him to grunt and fall to his knees.
"Quiet, beast." A Hvista with near golden fur growled before returning to gaze at Araxium. "Look at the mess you've gotten us into, Hunt-Master. They gave us ample warning about these humans in the footage, and you still charged in."
"Kintsu.... I hadn't expected you to actually show up to the battle. Ha, I figured you would've stayed on the ship." Araxium chuckled.
"You got our men killed for no reason." Kintsu growled.
"They died fighting. Raval awaits them. Unlike you." Araxium spit, causing Kintsu's guards to snarl.
"Yes, yes, of course. If that's what will help you sleep at night. I'm done with this. We have one of them. We will take it back for study. There are new worlds to conquer. New worlds to enslave." Kinstu began, causing David to tense up.
Araxium, to David's surprise, roared. "We do NOT enslave warriors! Only the Servant races. Do you wish to spit on your Ancestors so readily?! Where is your respect for the Code?!"
"Damn you and damn the Code. Do you not see what this means?! A race of warriors no one has yet contacted. If we can make them ours, we would be as great as the Ancestors once were. I am tired... I am tired of this mindless raiding, we could be striking the golden worlds! Instead we are kept to the outskirts like feral animals. I am tired of it. I am tired of living as a shadow of the former Empire." Kintsu spat.
"And I'm tired of your voice." Sten spat before suddenly leaping it and striking Kintsu, breaking away from the guards holding him. Even with his bare fist, a sickening crack from the Hvista's skull as the two left eyes came practically flying out. A sudden shock came as the other guard struck Sten with a baton, causing Sten to audibly gasp before collapsing. Kintsu screamed in pain as the guards aimed their railguns at David and Araxium.
"Get down, David!" Araxium screamed before taking cover nearby. The other Hvista opened fire as they slowly began to advance.
Sten, slowly slipping in and out of consciousness, looked up at Kintsu who held his swollen face. "Sir!" Another Hivsta said as he approached Kintsu. "The Aporyions are attempting to vent the ship. We have to go!"
"Those cowards.... Grab the human, fall back! Everyone fall back!" Kintsu shouted before Sten fell into unconsciousness.
David and Araxium watched as they retreated to their ship, before Araxium looked up at the warning lights suddenly flashing red. "Those cowards!" He roared.
"What's happening?!" David snapped.
"They mean to open all the airlocks and vent the ship. They'll lose everything on board, better alternative than dealing with us." He growled before moving towards the bridge door. Kneeling by a panel, he ripped it off and began to work.
"Us?" David asked as he approached Araxium.
"Would you prefer to keep fighting in the void of space, human?" Araxium asked as he looked back to David.
David shook his head, "I'd prefer to be alive."
"As would I. Now give me a moment."
David turned at the sound of something collapsing and saw Sasha, still with the knife in her shoulder crawling forward. He quickly moved to help her up. Her breathing was shallow, and she winced as he held onto her.
The door to the bridge was flown open, and the three survivors moved in just as it sealed shut behind them. "Goddess, save us!" One of the Aporyions shouted as guns aimed for Araxium.
"If anyone pulls a trigger I'll kill each and every one of you!" David shouted, causing the crew to freeze up.
"Cancel the venting! Cancel it!" Invil shouted, followed by sighing as the emergency lights flickered off.
"I said not to fuck us over," David glared daggers at Invil.
"We had no intention of doing so. You were being overwhelmed. We figured you would've lost so we made sure to protect ourselves. If I wanted to fuck you over I would've welded the doors shut and then vented the ship." He explained before his eyes trailed over to the Hvista. "But it seems it doesn't matter, now that this demon is here."
"Demon, ha, ironic coming from an Aporyion. Oh the words I could use to describe you and your Morrowav overlords. Each one less flattering than the last." Araxium growled.
"Enough!" David shouted. "Someone help my friend here or so help me I'll start killing everyone." David snapped.
After a moment of silence, Araxium moved into action. "Lay her here on the table," he said while sweeping away equipment, scaring off the Aporyion crew members that manned it. "The blade will need to be removed, it will not be pleasant."
"You're a doctor?" David raised his brow as he laid Sasha down.
"No. I'm a survivor." Araxium chuckled as he reached into a satchel on his right flank. The Aporyions nervously watched as he produced a few medical tools fit for the field.
"Good enough." David nodded as he moved to Sasha's side. "Anything else hurt?" He asked. She shook her head and David breathed a sigh of relief. "Ok... Let's get you patched up." He tried to move to help, but stopped as Sasha grabbed his arm. She signed slowly, causing David to look back at the door. "I don't know... They took him."
Sasha slowly nodded and looked to the ceiling. Araxium held a piece of blackened wood up to her face. "Chew on this. It will help." He offered. She hesitated at first, but obeyed, biting down on it.
"What is that gonna help with?" David inquired.
"This," Araxium grabbed the knife and ripped it out, causing Sasha to suddenly thrash and slam a fist into the table. She screamed as he moved to inject some sort of foam into her wound. The pain slowly subsided and she dropped the blackened wood from her mouth. "Our medicine is not as fancy as Aporyions, but it will stop the bleeding.
"Wait a minute what will it do to her?!" David shouted as he suddenly looked to ensure she wasn't reacting to it abnormally.
"The alternative was bleeding out. Our blades are designed to rip and tear. Would that be preferred?" Araxium folded his arms as Sasha's breathing slowed.
"Next time warn me before-"
"It's fine," A soft feminine voice came from the table with a thick eastern European accent. David looked down to Sasha's hollow eyes as she gazed up at him. She turned to Araxium and nodded. "Thank you... The pain... Is leaving."
"You are welcome." Araxium nodded before turning to Invil. "Now... What to do with you." He grinned, but suddenly perked up as alarm bells began to go off.
"Captain! We're being targeted!" A crew member shouted.
"Get us out of here! Warp to the nearest system!" Invil shouted. His eyes gazed up at the viewport to see the Hvista ship firing its first salvo.

2023.03.30 18:15 Silverfox1921 Meeting other people with Aspergers?

Was looking around at some local groups of Aspies.
What threw me off was hardly any of them looked/seemed like me.
There is a guy who works at my local Taco Bell I can tell is an Aspie, he organizes the sauces like a puzzle and always remarks StarWars lines to me. On top of the fact repeatedly cleaning everything and being generally curious.
My old prof who was Aspies could talk for hours about a certain subject and give really neutral grounds about the topic. Including politics etc and spoke his mind.
What I noticed about Aspies is there's those who are "Normal" and those who try to identify as Aspies but look like slobs.
Is it just me but I can't go out without looking decent, and always wear the same colors and closed shoes. Sometimes wear headphones and sunglasses etc.
What is it about the Aspies who wear pajamas and look like basement drewlers? Are they actually just extremely nerdy/geeky people who want to be like Sheldon Cooper?

2023.03.30 17:56 Warm_metal_revival AITC For Break Light?

I, Sean-Oliver (4F), am a nice little olive budgie. I’m quiet and shy and my favorite place in the whole wide world is the light of the ceiling fan. It is the perfect nest for when I’m in the mood to lay an egg or five; or when I don’t feel in an egg-laying mood, it’s a great place to just get away from the flock (especially my total cloaca flockmate Sweetie Bell who keeps trying to murder* me 😒). I walk around in the ceiling fan light and shake it a little, but at a petite 1.2oz, I can’t cause much damage. Or can I? Which brings us to yesterday’s events…
Last night I was sitting in my light nest, as one does, when all of a sudden the world falls out from under me! I hear bumpBASHCRASH as nest explodes in a million glass pieces on the floor! I’m not a very good flier so I coasted to safety under the bed, and there I stayed for a million hours until Mom discovered the scene of the tragedy. Mom looked for me while Dad cleaned up the glass. I stayed silent in shock. After a few years, Mom got some millet out and said “Sean-Oliver, where are youuuu?” I scratched my foot on the floor and Dad heard. I was rescued!
AITC for breaking the light and/or hiding from my rescuers? I don’t think so but I have a bird brain so what do I know.

2023.03.30 17:51 taskerdobuy Was Murderbot inspired by Kryten from red Dwarf?

I am just re reading "Red Dwarf: infinity welcomes careful drivers" and came a cross a passage that totally rang my murderbot bells. I wonder if Martha Wells was influenced by this? The passage refers to Kryten a mechanoid.
"And at night, when everyone was safely tucked in bed and all the chores were done and there was absolutely nothing left to clean, then, and only then, he’d sink into his favourite chair, cushions aplump, and watch Androids.Androids was a soap opera, aimed at the large mechanoid audience who had huge buying power when it came to household goods. Kryten had all one thousand, nine hundred and seventy-four episodes on disc. He’d seen them all many times, but he still winced when Karstares was killed in the plane crash. He still wept when Roze left Benzen. He still laughed and slapped his metal knee when Hudzen won the mechanoid lottery and hired his human master as a servant. And he always cheered when Mollee took on the android brothels, put the pimps into prison and set the prostidroids free.Androids, he told himself, was his one vice. That, and the single chocolate he allowed himself each viewing, to conserve supplies. When he watched Androids he wasn’t just a mechanoid, marooned light years from nowhere, with three demanding dependants and a never-ending schedule of work He was somewhere different. Somewhere glamorous. Somewhere else.
I bet Murderbot would like this Androids show as well as "All My Circuits" from futurama

2023.03.30 17:50 _Anonymous_one Your favourite Past Corrie Character or Pet (2000s and 2010s)- Round 1 heat 12 (part 1)

Thank you for your votes! :) sorry this is late, been out since this morning
Heat 11 results
1st- Deirdre Barlow- 173 points
2nd- Becky GrangeMcDonald- 162 points
3rd- Karen Phillips/McDonald- 52 points
4th- Betty Williams- 26 points
5th- Corey Brent- 12 points
6th- Angela Harris- 5 points
7th- Joe Carter- 2 points
8th- Molly Hardcastle- 1 point
9th- Ben Richardson- 0 points
10th- Ronnie Clayton- 0 points
Top two Deirdre and Becky were always hammering the others, and struggling between themselves to win big. Both actually topped the board at different points of voting. But just as it looked like Becky had it in the bag and was home and dry first, as voting reached the halfway mark, Deirdre came back from behind and took Becky down. Becky’s cause wasn’t helped by a rise up the ranks from Karen halfway through, who had been a really slow mover at first. And fellow legend Betty slunk into fourth, after also having a really slow start. Corey became the only male to make it, in the final place, where he easily beat off the others. This means Angela will have to fight hard to join her kids in round 2, as she’s the 11th wildcard. For the first time ever, two contenders failed to score at all, as Ben and Ronnie both join Jodie Morton in the no scorers club, and it’s not just them who are eliminated, Joe and Molly are eliminated too
Congratulations to Deirdre, Becky, Karen, Betty, and Corey though! They’re our next 5 qualifiers, so go into the table below:
Round 2 qualifiers:
Imran Habeeb, Rob Donovan, Charlie Stubbs, Gloria Price, Claudia Colby, Lloyd Mullaney, Steph Britton, Molly Compton/Dobbs, Robert Preston, Bev Unwin, Ashley Peacock, Emily Bishop, Janice Battersby, Eddie Windass, Angie Appleton, Michelle Connor, Anna Windass, Moira Pollock, Owen Armstrong, Vicky Jefferies, Jim McDonald, Sunita Parekh/Alahan, Danny Baldwin, Tony Gordon, Maya Sharma, Les Battersby, Jason Grimshaw, Luke Britton, Craig Harris, Andy Carver, Liz McDonald, Maxine Heavey/Peacock, Candice Stowe, Shelley Unwin, Emma Brooker, Eva Price, Zeedan Nazir, Cilla Battersby Brown, James Bailey, Violet Wilson, Hayley Cropper, Norman “Curly” Watts, Bethany Platt, Alina Pop, Sylvia Goodwin, Rosie Webster, Sinead Tinker, Tony Stewart, Paul Connor, Katy Harris, Deirdre Barlow, Becky GrangeMcDonald, Karen McDonald, Betty Williams, Corey Brent….
Wildcards:
Umed Alahan, Len Windass, Jade Rowan, Tyler Jefferies, Amber Kalirai, Carol Baldwin, Kal Nazir, Jude Appleton, Dennis Tanner, Frank Foster, Angela Harris….
More than halfway through the first round now! Let’s have a look who’s next in line!

Hi! I'm looking for a surveillance camera, formal paper, vertical banner, recycled paper bundle, wall fan, moon(made or DIY), cornucopia, turkey day casserole, and a wooden box! hope you can help. I can offer bells and see if i have any items on your wishlist in exchange! thank you!
(I can supply the 1 large star frag and 14 stars out of the 15 fragments for the moon if you're able to craft it!)
