7 Best Trekking and Hiking Shoes in India (Updated for 2018)

If you are planning to go on a Trekking trip then the first two things that come to your mind are a good backpack for trekking and a pair of good trekking shoes. If you think that your regular sports shoes, casual shoes or formal shoes will work on these trekking trips then think again.

You will need to buy shoes which are made for trekking.

Trekking Vs. Hiking

Trekking and hiking are commonly used interchangeably in India and the same shoes can be used for both trekking and hiking.

But just for your knowledge, here is the difference.

Trekking is more rigorous in nature as compared to hiking.

Hiking is a more leisure activity where you usually do a single day (or a few days trip). While it includes walking for long hours, these walks are on the man-made road and some uneven patches.

Trekking is usually a couple of days affair where you walk across trails and sometimes wildlife areas. Trekking is more popular in India as we have easy access to the Himalayan range and many other treks. You can easily find many groups or companies organizing multi-day treks.

Trekking Shoes (Hiking Shoes)

In this review, all the shoes covered can be used for trekking as well as hiking.

Trekking shoes are very similar to trail running shoes but are heavier and stronger.

Whether you are going on a short 2-3 day trekking trip or a long 7-10 days long trip to Leh, you definitely need a good pair of Trekking shoes.

Do you really need trekking shoes?

Yes!

If you're planning to go on a trekking, it's NOT advisable to use regular running shoes.

Instead, you should invest in proper trekking shoes.

Trekking shoes are constructed in a way to provide additional support to your feet and ankles.

The upper part of these Hiking shoes is usually made of leather, suede, or synthetic like material.

There are three main things you need to check while buying trekking shoes online.

  1. Proper ventilation in shoes to ensure good breathability for your feet. This will prevent your feet from any blisters.
  2. Look for high ankle shoes. The whole purpose of high ankle shoes is to prevent an injury to your feet while trekking and provide better grip and traction. The firmer the ankle support in these shoes, the better it is for your feet.
  3. Water resistance, especially if you are going to do treks in the upper Himalayas. You should definitely buy waterproof hiking shoes if you are going to do treks like Stok Kangri, Chadar trek, or Markha valley etc.

Size of Trekking Shoes (Important)

A rule of thumb while choosing the trekking shoes is to always buy a trekking shoe half a size bigger than your usual foot size (if possible).

The reason for this is for your foot to have extra space to wiggle around after long days of trekking.

When you are doing trekking in higher altitudes for more than 5-6 hours the blood circulation in your feet will increase. Due to this, your feet tend to swell and this extra half will accommodate for the swollen feet.

At least make sure that your current trekking shoes are not tight. A lot of shoe salesman try selling shoes by telling you that the shoe will open a bit and loosen up. While this is true, be cautious when buying trekking shoes and make sure there are not tight.
