Smartwatch Buyers Guide
Smartwatches are the latest in digital innovation in India, with various technology companies developing smart wrist wear capable of connecting to the internet and providing intelligent data to the user.
It was only a matter of time before items such as the watch started to get a digital makeover. Today its the watch, tomorrow – who knows?
There is one thing for sure, the smartwatch market is growing every day, with more and more products being released to maximize the experience. According to the leading research company Statista there are 3.5 million smartwatches shipments worldwide to the end customer.
If you’re interested in buying smart watches online, then you’re probably wondering what they’re all about. What they can do, what their limitations are and why you should buy a smartwatch online.
This guide will provide you with everything you need to know about smartwatches.
iOS vs Android
Do you use an Android phone or an iPhone? This is the first thing you should consider when buying a smartwatch online.
Apple was one of the first companies to enter the smartwatch market. They run all their devices on the iOS operating system, which allows for better sync and connectivity to other Apple devices. Some of the other watches available, however, have the Android platform. There are a few that use neither iOS nor Android, such as Pebble Smartwatch.
The point of all this is that you should choose a smartwatch based on the smartphone you are using. I have an iPhone 6 and I’ve been using the Garmin Smartwatch in the past without any issues because the Garmin VivoActive smart watch easily syncs with my iPhone.
You need a smartwatch that can sync to your phone easily otherwise you’ll miss out on many of the key features. The Apple Watch will only work with an iPhone. So if you are using an Android phone then there is no point in purchasing an Apple Smartwatch. For Android phones, you should look at buying smartwatches which are compatible with Android phones and provides all the features.
If you are looking for a Smart Android Watch you can consider the Samsung Smartwatch – Gear S3 which is a Top class watch with fantastic features and a killer look.
Another Good Android Smartwatch you can look at is Sony Smartwatch which is really one of the best smartwatches in India. Of course it will hurt your pocket as it costs you approximately 30K INR but it gives excellent features, information, and apps to use.
Much like smartphones, smartwatches can only hold apps that have been designed for that particular type of watch. So if there are any specific apps that you want to download then you have to make sure you purchase the right smartwatch. Apple currently boasts the largest app store, with almost 10,000 apps (both free and premium) available for you to download. Many of them are very simple apps that you will find on the iPhone stores, for which a smartphone version has been developed.
Of course, every smartwatch you buy comes with its own App but there are people who like using Apps such as Fitbit, Fitstar, and Mapmyfitness or have been using these Apps in the past but looking for new Smartwatch. For example, I use Mapmyfitness App for my Running/Jogging activity and its available both on Android and iPhone, therefore, I can purchase any Smartwatch that’s compatible with either Android or iOS.
Different Types of Screen
It might seem weird to you that some smartwatches have a touch screen and some have actual buttons on the side, but that is the reality. For many reasons, a touchscreen is a preferable option for many. However, button-controlled watches are normally a lot more affordable, so they certainly have a place in the market.
Also, some people feel that a smartwatch is too small for a touchscreen, and therefore prefer the button method of navigating through the various apps and settings.
If you don’t want the same smartwatch on your wrist that everyone else has, then you can always personalize it in a way of your choosing. One of the ways in which you can do that is by buying an alternative strap. You can also change the display of the watch and the Sony Smartwatch is one that has this feature.
As we mentioned earlier, your smartwatch can be used to receive emails and text messages. But in this respect, some are more advanced than others. For example, some smartwatches cannot receive notifications from social media accounts such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
If this is something you feel that you need, ensure that a smartphone is compatible with these platforms before purchasing.
The more advanced features the smartwatch has, the short its battery life is going to be. If the device has GPS and you want to keep it on then that is automatically going to use a lot of battery, and will probably last around one or two days. Should the device have even more advanced features, such as voice recognition, then it will be even less than that. On average, the Garmin Smartwatch lasts around 5-7 days while the Apple watch usually lasts around 18 hours.
Price – Cheap smartwatch or expensive Smartwatch
Smartwatches are available for people of all budgets. The Apple Watch is actually the most expensive that comes in the range of 30K INR but is considered to be of the highest quality and one of the best smartwatches in India.
Pebble, Samsung, Goqii, and Xiaomi are at the other end of the scale and are much more affordable for the average person. They don’t have a lot of fancy features, but they can still perform the usual tasks like step count, heart rate, calories burnt, reminders etc.
Other brands, from Sony, Fitbit, and LG, fall somewhere in between. Here is a quick price comparison of all smartwatches in India.
