2023.06.02 23:56 Thelastfrontiers Solo Trip Report: May 17 - May 29 (LONG)

Solo Trip Report: May 17 - May 29 (LONG)
I will post the resources used at the end of the post but here is the full itinerary.
May 17th (Arrival)
I arrived at KEF around 8 AM, I scheduled the pick up time of my van at 10:00 AM, around 9:15 AM the person from Cheap Campervans picked me up at the airport and drove us to the Happy Campers place. Van pick up was smooth and easy and headed towards Reykjavik since I scheduled a reservation at 12:30 at Sky Lagoon.
Stayed at Sky Lagoon for around 2 hours, did the ritual ( It was a nice experience, I'm not used to go to this type of places so it was a new experience for me).
Drove to the AirBnB I booked and died for a few hours there, then I walked towards Hallgrimskirkja and just walked around in that area, visited Harpa, Sun Voyager and ate some delicious hot dogs at Bæjarins. I stopped at a Bonus store on the way back to the AirBnB to grab supplies for the trip and I arrived once again at the AirBnB.
May 18 (Golden Circle)
Woke up, had breakfast and drove towards Thingvellir. I parked at Parking 1 and walked around the park for a few hours, visited Öxarárfoss, Logberg, Almannagjá etc. It was windy and rainy but fortunately I was prepared and had a really great time, although it was a little bit crowded on some parts.
Thingvellir
Next stop was Brúarfoss. I didn't do the whole hike due to the weather so I stayed in the new parking lot that they have, if I'm not mistaken the price was around 750 ISK, the road is gravel but any 2WD can access it without a problem if you are careful. Place was beautiful and there were maybe 2 or 3 persons there.
Drove to Strokkur to see the Geyser, stayed there for a bit until the Geyser "exploded" and took some pictures and then left, beware of the smell here.
Drove to Gullfoss and I parked in the lower parking lot, I walked to the side of the waterfall and it was incredible, trully a highlight of the day but make sure to bring some really good hiking shoes/boots and some waterproof equipment.
Finally Arrived at Skjol Camping which was pretty good, had a pizza and a beer in the restaurant they have and went to sleep.
May 19 (South)
First stop of the day was Kerid Crater, you need to pay 450 ISK to enter but it's a beautiful view, walked around the crater and left.
Drove to Seljalandsfoss, you also need to pay parking here and it was very crowded when I arrived, walked to Seljalandsfoss and went behind the waterfall. Walked to Gljufrafoss and entered the cave, make sure to bring good waterproof shoes here cause you need to walk in water to enter the cave.
Next stop was Skógafoss, simply amazing, I stayed for a bit inside the restaurant that is in front and had something to eat in the meantime that the rain stopped a little, once it stopped I walked to the waterfall, I went up the stairs towards the Fimmvorduhals trail and walked for a mile or so and then I returned.
Skógafoss
Drove to Kvernufoss, wow, one of the hightlights of the trip. I walked down until the end where the waterfall is and just stayed there for a bit, simply amazing place and I was alone for almost the entire hike.
Drove to Dyrhólaey but unfortunately it was closed.
Drove to Reynisfjara and stayed there for a bit.
Finally arrived at an AirBnB I booked that was just a few minutes from Vik, I was unable to find a camp that was open around that area (or maybe I just didn't do a lot of search).
May 20
First stop was the Black Sand beach in Vik, really beautiful views and way less crowded than Reynisfjara.
Did the lava show at Vik and it was an amazing experience, definitely recommend doing this if you are in the area, after the show I ate an amazing lamb soup in the restaurant.
Drove to Eldhraun, short stop but beautiful views all around.
Drove to Fjaðrárgljúfur, road is paved all the way through and it's very easy to access, did the hike and took some amazing shots here, unfortunately mid hike there was a wind storm and I lost my lens hood of my camera and the raincoat I had for my backpack, Iceland winds are no joke!
Fjaðrárgljúfur
Did a little stop at Fossálar to take some pictures and finally arrived at Tjaldsvæðið í Svínafelli camp, really good facilities.
May 21 (South East)
Drove to Skaftafell since I booked a Glacier Hike with Arctic Adventures, the whole tour lasted around 4 hours and it was definitely one of the things I liked the most about the trip. Once we returned I had a little bite at the restaurant that the park has and then I continued the trip. (I wanted to do the Svartifoss hike but I was a little tired).
Glacier
Drove to the Múlagljúfur Canyon, unfortunately weather was pretty bad and since this was a longer hike I decided to not risk it, I was pretty disappointed cause this trail was one of my priorities but safety first!
Did a quick stop at Hofskirkja and drove to Fjallsárlón Glacier. I stayed inside the van for a bit cause it was raining and the wind was crazy for a bit but then it calmed down and I went down to the lagoon, amazing views.
Drove to Diamond Beach but unfortunately there was no ice in the beach, after this I drove to Höfn and stayed at the camp there. Unfortunately this was probably my least favorite camp, showers are not included in the price so that was a bummer.
May 22 (East)
First stop was Mount Vestrahorn, you need to pay to enter at the Viking cafe, I get that people sometimes get mad about paying here but I thought it was really worth it, they give you a map with the parking spots and the trails that they have, I visited the viking village which was cool even if it's fake, walked in the black sand beach and saw some wild horses roaming around, after that I grabbed a snack from the Cafe.
Vestrahorn
Drove to Skútafoss. Honestly, this was probably my favorite place in the whole trip, it was simply amazing and I was probably alone for almost 1 hour until another person arrived, words can't describe this place.
Had a stop at Djúpivogur and ate at Við Voginn, then I started the drive to the camp but I made a little stop at Nykurhylsfoss.
Arrived at Camp Egilsstadir, If you are visiting during low season I would recommend to arrive there and then do the reservation, I made a reservation before I arrived and once I was there there was someone else at my spot, I talked with the person in recepetion and for some reason my reservation was not appearing so I had to do it once again and grab another spot. Really good facilities tho!
May 23 (North)
Arrived at Hengifoss. I didn't check my AllTrails app beforehand and the hike was much longer than I expected lol, but it was beautiful.
Drove to Fardagafoss. I was planning on going all through the end but the wind was crazy, so I decided to return mid hike.
Next stop was Stuðlagil Canyon. I recommend doing the East parking to get to the famous spot, when you cross the bridge you need to follow a road that is not paved, it is a little rough but if you are careful you can do it in a 2WD. Once you park you need to walk for a little while, can't remember but I would say it's a 1-2 mile walk to the canyon, and as I mentioned before, wind was crazy this day but I was able to complete it safely, if it was raining tho I would have returned most likely.
Stuðlagil
Drove to camp in Ásbyrgi, really beautiful but this was the most expensive camp I stayed at.
May 24
Woke up a little late so I decided to skip the Ásbyrgi trails and I drove to Dettifoss, you need to be careful here cause Google Maps will have you take road 864 which was closed when I was there, make sure to always check the correct roads in road.is, in this case I took road 862 and arrived with no problems.
Did a quick stop at Hverir, you need to pay for parking and also the smell can get very strong lol.
Drove to Mývatn and visited the Grjótagjá cave, I then drove to Hverfjall volcano, you need to pay parking here. Did the hike to the top and stayed for a bit there, the climb is a little steep but once you are up it's easy to walk.
Hverfjall
Next stop was Goðafoss, parked on the East Side and took some cool pictures, it was a short stop.
Finally started my drive to camp, I had a little scare here cause I had to drive between some mountains and that day it was snowing, I checked the road and a very tiny part of Þjóðvegur had wet snow on it, I decided to try the drive and I arrived safely at camp but it was stressful. Camping Varmahlíð was the one I stayed that night and it was lovely, really friendly stuff and good facilities.
May 25
Drove to Grafarkirkja, you need to open a little gate to access the parking so just watch out for the signals once you are close. I arrived early in the morning so I had the place for myself for like 30 minutes.
Kálfshamarsviti was the next stop, most of the drive to here is done in a gravel road so be careful, the place is very beautiful and there were just a few people when I arrived.
Kálfshamarsviti
Drove to Hvitserkur, long drive but I'm used to them, also a gravel road if I recall correctly, really peaceful place, I went down to the beach, you need to be careful here not to slip.
I was initially planning on staying in Búðardalur tjaldsvæði camping, this one is just on the side of the main road and facilities are kinda lacky and place is kinda small (I can imagine that in summer this gets full really quickly), I was walking around town and found a place called Gil Gesthouse and decided to stay there, it was a lovely stay.
May 26 (Snæfellsnes / West)
First stop was Berserkjahraun, it was rainy and windy so I just made a quick stop and took some pictures.
Went to Kirkjufell, you also need to pay parking here which I didn't know, short stay also due to the weather.
Kirkjufell
Drove to Svöðufoss but I was unable to do the hike since wind was too strong and visibility was bad, I also had to skip a stop at Lóndrangar unfortunately.
Did a little stop at Djúpalónssandur, took some pics and left, was unable to go down to the beach.
Stopped at Arnarstapi, rain stopped fortunately but wind was strong still but it was safe to walk around.
Visited Búðakirkja. I then decided to go back to Kirkjufell since weather got good and wanted to see it with good visibility, made a short stop there and walked around the lake for a bit until the wind made me return to the van.
Camped at Akranes, wind was very strong and it blew the door for the showers.
May 27 (Reykjanes)
Drove to Lake Kleifarvatn and stayed there and walked down for a bit. Visited Krýsuvík and then drove to Valahnúkamöl, really nice stay here, took some good pictures and also visited the Reykjanes Lighthouse.
Valahnúkamöl
I was planning on visiting Blue Lagoon but it was fully booked unfortunately so I decided to drive to Reykjavik once again and booked Sky Lagoon again. Walked around the city again and bought souvenirs for family and friends, ate dinner at Kol which was good but pricey and finally I stayed at the Reykjavik Campsite (make sure to make a reservation before hand cause it gets full).
May 28
Woke up early in the morning and drove to Cheap Campervans to return the van. Return was fast and without any issues and the staff was kind enough to drop me at the AirBnB that I reserved at Reykjanesbær. I mostly stayed there the whole day to rest.
May 29
Flight was scheduled for 9 am so I decided to walk to the airport and just when I was starting my walk a kind person offered me a ride to the airport. Everything went smooth and I returned home.

2023.06.02 23:43 Single_Fee7673 HOA Nightmare

We live in a 10 unit gated complex in a rough neighborhood. We are experiencing challenges with our HOA stemming from what we believe is the disagreement with the board over who is responsible for the repairs to our roof/patio which is leaking into the room below.
Facts - Building was constructed in 2007. - In 2017 our townhome began to leak into our home from the patio on the roof. - There are 10 units in complex, six with one construction and four with another type - Six of the six units with the same construction type all have patios on the roof that are leaking into the homes - HOA argues they are not responsible for repairs as they are a result of not keeping up with routine maintenance. - We argue it is a building defect or flaw in the construction of six of the ten units afflicted with this problem. - We perused a 3rd party claim with the HOAs insurance company despite their opposition - The claim is still being investigated and the cause of the leak is still unknown at this time - In six years of living here there have been no disputes between our unit and any other residents or board members. - We live in a gated community. The neighborhood is known for having a high rate of crime and gang activity and safety parking on the street is a real concern - Recently one of our guests mistakenly parked blocking the trash cans from removal that day - As a result, the board president has proposed changes to the bylaws imposing fines and interest upwards of $166,000 for multiple violations over the years, namely parking violations among others. - The Board president singled our unit out to address a concern in the form of public admonishment directed specifically at us in a group text to the entire complex - Cameras that were requested for the front of the building, due to package theft and non-community members being spotted inside the premises, were denied. However, cameras overlooking the parking and trash areas are installed in the back to catch parking violators. - The board sent a text stating that one of our vehicles was going to be towed and threatened to call the police if we didn’t claim it, otherwise it would be reported as trespassing. The text was sent only to us, not as a group text so clearly he knew which unit the vehicle belonged to. We had only left for 15 minutes while we went to pick up food before his threat was made. - Board president warned me via text to be careful not to be “raciest” from what I can surmise was an inadvertent mixed up of his last name. Nothing remotely raciest was stated in any comment as we strictly addressed the matter at hand. - We believe this treatment began due to side-stepping the board and filing a 3rd party claim on the HOA’s insurance policy, despite their disagreement. - Any advice, ideas or input is welcomed and greatly appreciated.

2023.06.02 23:34 EuropeanAmericanMBA Is is true that republican-led states are backwater 3rd world countries, and I should aim for programs and post-MBA jobs in Blue States? (I am From Europe)

Hi there,
I am a candidate from Europe choosing between a few MBA programs, including Ross, Fuqua, McCombs (with near full scholarship). I am aiming for a job in management consulting. MBB preferred, but I'd be okay with EY-P, Deloitte, Strategy&, LEK, and what not. My main motivation for immigrating to the US is because salaries are much higher in America and the taxes are lower.
The purpose of this question is that from the perspective of many in my country, the US seems de facto divided into two, with blue and red states seeming to be like two completely different countries. From one state to another, you have very wildly different laws on major topics like abortion, LGBTQA+ rights, vaccines, and gun control, with some places in the American South having high populations that don't believe in basic things like evolution, climate change, or vaccines.
I do not view myself as left wing at all. I vote conservative (Center-Right) in my own country. I think my country's taxes are too high and our welfare state is unsustainable long term, and even feel our country was too lax in admitting way too many Syrian refugees without properly integrating them. However, even our mainstream right wing party is pro gay marriage, pro abortion rights, pro vaccine, and pro gun control, and the members are highly educated typically and do not dispute the scientific consensus on climate change. In the US, it seems much of the modern day Republican supporters are rednecks, hillbillies, and hicks with very low levels of education, and they view Trump (and DeSantis) as their God-Emperor.
It seems the most developed areas of the US include NYC, SF Bay Area, Chicago, Philadelphia, Boston, DC, and Los Angeles, with places like Alabama, Mississippi, Oklahoma, and Arkansas being quasi-third world shitholes. The Midwest seems mixed with Michigan seeming MOSTLY OK, Minnesota being fine, but Indiana is also shithole territory. The national parks in these Republican states look beautiful, but too bad the residents are idiots.
I have heard in Texas places like Austin are liberal, but it does not matter if the state as a whole is hard right. I am a woman, and despite being a European conservative, abortion access is very important to me. I am single so in the case I get pregnant from sex, I want to be able to plan my pregnancy and terminate if I want to. I also don't want to live in a third world country where banning drag shows and trans care is the norm.
Is my view correct? Should I reject Fuqua and McCombs for these political reasons, and go to Ross? Should I aim for jobs in NYC, SF, Chicago, DC, etc?

2023.06.02 22:52 Perdendosi Travel advice / Links?

Hello New Zealanders! (Can I call you kiwis?)
I have travel questions for you. If this isn't the right subreddit, or there's a wiki or travel advice thread that I missed, please let me know.
I have the great fortune to have just booked an extraordinarily cheap flight to Auckland from the U.S. using airline miles. (It's on Delta -- less than 50,000 miles round trip for travel in November, late January, Febuary, and parts of March -- happy to share the specifics if anyone wants.)
My family and I will be there over the U.S. Thanksiving holiday -- Nov. 19 (that's when we land--we leave the US on the 17th) through Nov. 25 (that's when we depart, and, thanks to the International Date Line, also when we get home!). Not a lot of time, I know, but really all we can spare in that part of the year.
My family is small -- it's just my wife and I, and my 7-year-old daughter. We like all sorts of vacations, from wine tasting (okay, maybe not the kiddo) to relaxing beach vacations, to nature hikes and camping, to city life and culture. We also love food, though the wife is a vegetarian and the kiddo doens't like seafood. We live in Salt Lake City, Utah, so we have the mountain life at home, but that doesn't mean we wouldn't be interested in exploring in NZ, too. I guess the only think we can really cross off the list is anything Lord of the Rings related, as my family isn't really into Tolkien and haven't seen the movies (though I have). My wife travels internationally for work a few times a year, and I'm hopeful that this won't be our only visit to your awesome country, but I think we have to assume that this will be a once-in-a-lifetime trip for us.
I've looked through the generic New Zealand travel sites, but don't have a really good feeling for what a reasonable itinarary looks like for our time there. Right now, I have the following questions:
1) Is it worth it to try to get to the South Island at all? Or should we just focus on stuff in the north. In other words, is there anything in the south that we absolutely can't miss, and worth the travel time and cost?
2) I was looking at a couple of sites that offer campervans or RVs at reasonable cost. We own an RV and are used to driving and sleeping in it. Is that a good way to explore the North Island? Are there ample places to park and/or campgrounds near cities or attractions? Or would staying in hotels and using public transit / taxis / car rentals be better? I'm pretty sure we don't want to stick just to Auckland, but on the other hand if driving a 6-8 meter campervan or RV around, and finding a place to park it while we're at attractions is going to be a huge hassle, then we'll consider alternatives.
3) For stuff to do, I'm fairly certain we'll want to check out Waitomo caves (my daughter, who's obsessed with nature, will want to check out the glow worms!) snorkel on Poor Knights Islands, and have a beach day (Hot Water Beach? some place else?). We might want to check out Waiheke Island, hike in Egmont National Park, and have a Maori experience at some place like Te Pa Tu, or take a whale watching or other cruise or ferry. Any thoughts on any of those activities? What should we do in Auckland? Is Wellington worth visiting? If we were to do something like a wine tasting, or want to hang out at a brewery, is that OK for kids? Are kids admitted to those places? Are there kids activities in pubs/breweries/wineries? What else should be on our bucket list?
(P.S. I got most of my ideas here... I don't know how interesting or reputable the site is: https://www.newzealand.com/us/feature/11-must-do-north-island-experiences/)
Thanks so much!

2023.06.02 22:51 hodsct59 Belmont Park And Woodbine Choices For 06-03-2023

I have chosen five races at Belmont Park and 2 races at Woodbine on Saturday June 3, 2023 that I am willing to take a shot at and hopefully find my next nice score. I will not be betting the last race at Belmont individually, but it is the last race of the late P5 which I will take a couple of small shots at. I have always preferred to get as many shots as I can to hit some type of exotics in one or two races but believe spreading in any pick type sequences is not the best use of my money. Much prefer using a few dollars every race and get more opportunities every day compared to putting all my eggs in one sequence and watching them all break when one horse or race does not go as expected.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Belmont Park 4th Race: Maiden Special Weight --- Purse $75,000 --- 3 YOs & Up NY Bred Fillies & Mares --- 7 Furlongs Turf:
1)Ace Up Her Sleeve (12-1) Has 10 lifetime starts with 4 starts and 3 thirds since the beginning of this year. In her last three starts she was tried twice on the AWT in sprints against open company and then shipped back to NY to face state breds in a turf sprint, but race was moved to a muddy dirt track where she was well beaten but managed to get up for third. One slow work since at Delaware Park. Dialed In - Clearly Cheating by Broken Vow. 3x3 to Storm Cat, 4(C)x5(F)x5(F) to Mr. Prospector, 5x5 to Blushing Groom, 5(C)x5(C)x5(F) to Secretariat. As usual, most interested in her broodmare sire, Broken Vow, to figure out what distance is best for this runner, and I believe turf sprinting is the answer for this one. Broken Vow as a G2 SW on dirt but plenty of his progeny has won on grass up to a mile and he has a daughter (Broken Dreams) similar bred to this one's dam that won 3 stakes turf sprints including 2 of them G3 stakes and banked just shy of $400K. Fits with these.
6)La Chance (50-1) Has started 10 times in her career and has one second in 4 starts this year as her only board finish in her first ten starts. She will need her best effort yet but has the bloodlines to upset this field at a huge price. Her last two races and her recent works gives a clue that improvement is on the way after getting a trainer that acts like he knows what he is trying to achieve and gets her first real chance on grass. Looking At Lucky - One Wise Cowgirl by Wiseman's Ferry. 4x5 to Clever Trick. Her sire, Looking at Lucky, was a Champion 2 YO and Champion 3 YO on dirt in the U.S. and broodmare sire, Wiseman's Ferry, won a couple of G3 dirt stakes at 9 furlongs but is best remembered as sire of Wise Dan, who was good on dirt to begin his career but took his popularity to an entirely different level by winning 14 of his last 15 starts on grass with 1 second and 15 of 17 overall, with every grass start against either G1 or G2 competition. La Chance's dam, One Wise Cowgirl, has also produced a G1 sprint SW on dirt (Haveyougoneaway).
4)Cerretta (8-1) has started once this year finishing 3rd in a grass sprint but also started 7 times last year with a second and a third her other two board finishes. Has four decent to useful works since her last start which should move her forward. Midnight Lute - Lift by Pulpit. 5x4 to Mr. Prospector, 5x5 to Raise A Native & Secretariat.
7)Souffle (2-1) started twice last year, finishing second in her first start on grass as the favorite before returning as an odds-on heavy favorite and finished 4th after getting beaten to the early lead and then coming up empty late. This is her first start this year and trainer Clement is good at hiding which one of his trainees is ready to win first back or may need a race or two but normally uses Rosario when he thinks one is live and he does so here also. Will also race with lasix for the first time. Candy Ride - Portmagee by Hard Spun. 5x4 to Mr. Prospector. Both Candy Ride and Hard Spun are known for their high speed in mid-distance races especially but dam, Portmagee, won one 6 furlongs grass sprint in her career but falter both times when asked to go just slightly further.
My Risks: $4 Ex Box 1-6, $1 Ex Box 1-4-6, $1 Tri Box 1-4-6, $.10 Super Box 1-4-6-7, $.50 Super Key 4 with 1-6-7 with 1-6-7 with 1-6-7. Total Risks $25.40.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Race 6: $.50 Pick 5 ---- 6 with 8 with 7 with 2,4,5 with 3,4,5,6,8,9,10,12. Total Risk $12.00.
Race 6: $.50 Pick 5 ---- 6,9 with 8 with 7 with 2,4,5, with 3,6,9,12. Total Risk $12.00.
Race 6: Allowance --- Purse $95,000 --- 3 YOs UP F&M N/W 1x or N/W 2 Lifetime --- 6 Furlongs Turf:
6) Anna Karenine (9-2) was shipped to U.S. late last year and was given the rest of the year off. Returned in March in a G3 stakes and sat close up early behind a crawling pace and faded after a half mile on grass. Cut back to 6 furlongs in her next start, she sat just behind the two early leaders in third, was sent after a half after the front runner had put only early challenger away but could not get by and hung in deep stretch to lose 2nd nearing the wire in this class and conditions. She has 4 more works in typical Brown style but should be getting close to her best effort. Tornado - Ivory Style by Desert Style. 4(C)x5(F)x5(F)x5(F) to Northern Dancer, 5x4 to Danzig, 5x5 to Special. Anna Karenine's 4th dam, Ivory Wand, is also 2nd dam of Elusive Quality, and this dam line flows back through Frizette, an important member of family #13.
9) Redifined (5-1) has one start this year where she tracked a fast early pace but came up empty in the stretch run in an O/C allowance race. However, she broke her maiden in the first start of her career, then competed in 3 stakes races, 2 of them listed and the other a G3 stakes where she placed in all three. She has recorded 3 very good works since her last race and is the one to beat. More Than Ready - Mrs. Boss by Wild Event. 4x5 to Northern Dancer, 5x5 to Nearctic.
5) Dekanter (12-1) has started twice this year which was also her first two starts of her career and finished 3rd on dirt, then won a maiden special weight race on grass in fairly fast time but it was during a small period when Aqueduct's grass course was blistering fast. Has 4 more works since her last start, none that are eye catching but all done on a 7-day then 6-day splits which is what you (or at least I) want to see from grass runners instead of fast works. Kantharos - Morning Rush by Unbridled's Song. 4x4 to Storm Cat, 5(C)x5(C)x5(F)x5(F) to Mr Prospector.
8) Michele M. (15-1) started twice last year, both time on the AWT, breaking her maiden in her first start before finishing unplaced in a Canadian listed stake. She will be making her first start of this year, first start on grass in her career and first start for a new trainer that wins often on grass but tends to struggle with trainees first start on grass. West Coast - Juliamarie by Mizzen Mast. 4x4 to Mr. Prospector, 5x5 to Secretariat, 5(C)x5(C)x5(F) to Raise A Native. Dam line traces back to Penelope/Prunella and the most influential family #1 in bloodlines history, without a doubt.
My Risks: $5 Ex Box 6-9, $1 Tri Box 5-6-9, $5 Tri Straight 6 with 9 with 5, $1 Super Straight 5-6-9 with 5-6-9 with 5-6-9 with 8. Total Risk $27.00.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
7th Race: Maiden Special Weight --- Purse $90,000 --- 3 YOs & Up --- 1 1/16 Mile Turf:
8)Redistricting (3-1) is a first-time starter. It looks like his training started under another barn, then was a private purchase by current owner (private or purchases away from sales are not reported in most cases), then has a consistent work pattern for current trainer Brown with only one small break in his training that lasted 10 days until the day after the Ky Derby (likely concentrating on runners already entered to race). None of his works are eye catching but his last 9 works have all been at 4 furlongs officially, which is the normal Brown pattern. Kingman - Cascata by Montjeu. 4x4 to Kris, 5x4 to Northern Dancer.
1)Certified Loverboy (20-1) has started once this year where he tracked the early pace for 6 furlongs, then faded near the rail as the slow early pace quicken in a maiden race at 1 1/8 mile on grass, which is likely a little further than he is bred to excel at. Now cuts back 1/16 mile, which fits his bloodlines better and has one useful work since that start and returns to jockey who likely knows him better than others. Mendelsohn - Tasha's Moon by Malibu Moon. 4x4 to Mr. Prospector. Dam family traces back to family #3 which is the family of Sister One To True Blue, a daughter of a Byerley Turk mare who, along with her full brother Young True Blue, is most responsible for the formation of the 2nd X-factor gene family.
6)Ohana Honor (8-1) has two starts this year, the first on GP speed favoring dirt track where he tried to impact the race from well off the pace but had no real opportunity to do so. Next out, he was shipped to Aqueduct and moved to grass for the first grass start of his career where he was rolling in the stretch to just miss winning but also encountered enough trouble to make him late arriving to compete. Trainer Shug has put 6 more works in him since that effort, the first 4 useful works and then 2 easy works just to let him stretch his legs until a spot could be found to race him. Has the look of a trainer who is serious about breaking this one's maiden. Honor Code - Spacy Tracy by Awesome Again. 4x5 to Mr. Prospector, 5x5 to Bold Ruler, 5(C)x5(F)x5(F) to Northern Dancer. Dam has already produced 3 stakes winners from 6 known foals to race, including this one.
7)Fly Right (6-1) is making his first start of the year after making three starts last year and drew near the rail in every start, thereby forcing jockey to send him early for the lead to avoid being trapped (at least perceived by most). He has 10 works for his return, including last 9 at Belmont Park, but his last 4 works should have him fit and ready. Also goes first-time lasix. Astern - Fly By by Johar. 4x5 to Sadler's Wells, 5x5 to Danzig. 6th dam, Where You Lead, is an important and influential broodmare.
My Risks: $5 Ex Box 1-8, $1 Tri Box 1-6-8, $1 Super 8 with 1-6-7 with 1-6-7 with 1-6-7, $3 Super Straight 8 with 1 with 6 with 7. Total Risk $25.00.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
8th Race: Allowance --- Purse $80,000 --- 3 Yos & Up N/W 1x or N/W 2 lifetime NY Bred --- 1 1/16 Mile:
7) Shadow Dragon (2-1) has three starts this year, finishing 2nd in a G3 stakes in his first start then giving a half-hearted effort in his next two in G2 stakes company, races he was clearly overmatched in and thrown against them much too soon in his young career. Will find these fits his current ability much better and looks like a solid key in the pick exotics. Has 6 works since his last start and most of them shows he still has a desire to be competitive. Army Mule - Fire Assay by Medaglia D'Oro. 5x5 to Northern Dancer but also has Somethingroyal crossing in the sire line through Secretariat and in the broodmare sire line and dam line through another son Sir Gaylord(x2). Has even more crossing influence through Turn-To & Teddy through multiple sons and daughters on both sides.
6) Ormstown (5-1) broke his maiden in his last start against NY bred in the third start of his career and now tries state-bred winners for the first time. This is a fairly weak field for an allowance race and the reason I landed on this one is I feel he has an ability to rate though he went gate to wire against easier in this last (or at least his bloodlines suggest he should). Bernardini - Sandra by Bluegrass Cat. 2x4 to A.P. Indy, 4x5 to Secretariat, 5(C)x4(F)x5(F) to Mr. Prospector, 5(C)x5(F)x5(F) to Northern Dancer.
My Risks: $8 Ex Straight 7-6. Total Risk $8.00.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Race 9: Pennine Ridge Stakes(G2) --- Purse $200,000 ---- 3 YOs ---- 1 1/8 Mile Turf:
4) Silver Knott (2-1) has one start this year and was overmatched against much better than he will see here. Will be looking to make amends for such a poor showing in last. Probably a little more eager than normal as he was fresh off a break and ended up burning all his energy before the real running began on a slow grass course. Europe does not record works between races as most works on private property and normally have to rely on what trainers tells everyone. Brings a substitute jockey along as main rider stays in England for the Epsom Derby. Lope De Vega - God Given by Nathaniel. 5(C)x5(C)x5(F) to Mr. Prospector. Lope De Vega is a son of Shamardal (from 1st crop of Giant's Causeway and dam was a full sister to Street Cry). Broodmare sire, Nathaniel, is also a 2-time G1 stakes winner on grass but is more famously known as the sire of Enable (15 wins in 19 lifetime starts).
5) Congruent (10-1) has started four times this year with a win on the AWT 2 starts back his only board finish. He switches trainers since his last start and new trainer has put 7 works in him, the first 4 looks like they were leg stretching type works to let him get a good feel of Belmont dirt surface followed by 3 good solid works with two of them grass works. Tapit - Part The Seas by Stormy Atlantic. 4x4 to Seattle Slew, 4(C)x5(C)x4(F) to Mr. Prospector, 5x5 to Northern Dancer, In Reality & Secretariat.
2) Sharar (12-1) is making his U.S. debut after shipping over from Dubai, switching trainers and given plenty of time to rest and become familiar with U.S. racing. Like a typical Pletcher trainee, he put in a few non-descript works but works improved in his last two after he was switched to grass, which he had already suggested in his first two starts he did not like the feel of Dubai's dirt (possibly did not care from Belmont dirt either). Upset potential at good odds. Gun Runner - Sacre Coeur by Saint Ballado. 5x4 to Herbager.
8) Far Bridge (9-5) has three starts in his career, with all 3 coming this year and he has 2 wins and a second, losing his perfect record in his last start when beaten a nose. However, I will take a stand against him for the win as his two works are typical Pletcher works, but his last was not an improvement which is normal for one of his trainees just before a start. Could be the track switch but more likely last took a little fitness from him. Your call, as he certainly has the bloodlines to beat these. English Channel - Fitpitcher by Kitten's Joy. 5x5 to Northern Dancer.
My Risks: $5 Ex Box 2-4, $1 Tri Box 2-4-5. Total Risk $16.00.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Race 10: Maiden Claiming $40K --- Purse $45,000 ---- 3 YOs & Up New York Bred --- 1 1/16 Mile Turf:
3) War Prince (9-2) 4(C)x5(C)x5(F) to Northern Dancer.
4) Atlanta's Acuna (6-1) Complete outcross in first 5 generations.
5) Fluorescent Bay (20-1) 5x3 to Icecapade.
6) Just For Luck (12-1) 5x5 to Northern Dancer.
8) Silent Running (10-1) 5x5 to Secretariat.
9) Thethrillofvictory (5-1) Complete outcross in his first 5 generations.
10) Sea Cruise (30-1) Complete outcross in first 5 generations.
12) Bad Larry (4-1) 4(C)x5(C)x5(F) to Mr. Prospector.
No bets on this race but using these in last race of P5. Total Risk All Bets: $125.40.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Woodbine June 3,2023:
5th Race: Maiden Special Weight --- Purse $111,600 --- 2 YOs ---- 5 Furlongs:
7) Call The Question (8-1) started once and finished last but had only 3 furlongs works with one poor gate work before that start in 4 1/2 furlongs and did not try after a poor break. Now has two more good works since that start, a 4-furlongs followed by a 3-furlongs gate work that is much better and now stretches out to 5-furlongs where she should get a better break from gate. 5(C)x5(F)x5(F) to Mr Prospector.
6) That Girl Artemus (6-1) is a first-time starter. Her 4-furlongs two back is very good followed by another good
4-furlongs work from the gate. If she breaks as well as she has shown, becomes a candidate to wire the field. 4x5 to Mr. Prospector.
2) Pipit (5-2) is a first-time starter. Has a good gate work two back at 4 furlongs followed by an easy 4 furlongs work. Attracts top jockey with an above average trainer. 4x4 to Mr. Prospector, 5x5 to Secretariat & Sir Ivor, 5(C)x5(C)x5(F) to Raise A Native, 5(C)x5(F)x5(F) to Northern Dancer.
9) Miramichi (15-1) has one start on the AWT at 4 1/2 furlongs, but drew outside on a rainy track which is usually the worst place to be, and the one just inside her got better break and she chased them throughout as they pull away while closest to the rail and she lost third at the wire to a late runner. Returns in two weeks but has another good 4 furlongs work since that start.
My Risks: $5 Ex Box 6-7, $1 Tri Box 2-6-7, $.20 Super Box 2-6-7-9, $.30 Super Straight 2-7 with 2-7 with 6-9 with 6-9. Total Risk $22.00.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Race 7: Royal North S(Can-2) --- Purse $175,000 --- 4 YOs & Up F&M --- 6 1/2 Furlongs Turf:
2) Bay Storm (3-1) has three starts this year with 2 seconds and one third. She has been an ultra-consistent runner throughout her career, missing a placing once in her 14 lifetime starts. While this looks like a step up for her into G2 company, it is actually a step down in class as she has missed twice to odds-on G1 winning fillies in her last 5 starts while 2nd both times, including beaten a nose by one of them. She will be going back on lasix for the first time in a while. 4x4 to Storm Cat.
8) Baby No Worries (12-1) has started four times this year, winning her first start in an allowance race on the AWT at TP with a good late kick to get up in time, then finishing 2nd in a small stakes race at same track in her third start using a good late kick again to just miss before finishing 3rd in her last start against the probable favorite in here in a G3 stakes race at this track with another good late kick. She has the look of finally putting it all together as she gets more racing experience and is also moving back to grass. 5x5 to Hoist The Flag & My Charmer.
5) Our Flash Drive (9-5) has started once this year and made it a winning effort in a G3 stakes race on the AWT at her home track here. She switches back to turf here where if she has a weakness, it is on grass as only one of her stake wins have come on that surface. However, all her grass tries have been in the U.S. where the competition is usually much tougher and since she is back on her home turf, so she deserves to be the favorite. One useful work since her last start. Outcross in her first 5 generations but has Nasrullah influences on both sides.
6) Sweet Enough (20-1) has started 3 times this year in two G3 stakes and a listed stakes race in the U.S. and has not placed. However, in all three starts, she was beaten by horses that would be vying for favoritism in here and her last indicated she is near to regaining her best form. Trainer is one of Canada's best and he has put 5 more works in her, the last three very good and indicates this filly is still moving forward. She will be racing on lasix for the first time this year. 5(C)x5(C)x5(F) to Mr. Prospector.
My Risks: $5 Ex Box 2-8, $1 Tri Box 2-5-8, $.20 Super Box 2-5-6-8, $1 Super Key 2 with 5-6-8 with 5-6-8 with 5-6-8. Total Risks $26.80.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Total Risks Both Tracks $174.80.

⟨⟨ Chapter 001 ⟩⟩ Don't thank the «GODS»
Without warning; the direction left became urgently Tuesday. Up became a distant relative. Backwards became fictitious. And the popcorn I’d been eating became a puddle of vomit at my feet. — That last one being what I would consider “normal” allowed me to realise that whatever had happened had now stopped happening.
I stumble around in the darkness for a few seconds before a light shines up ahead. Someone else had gotten to the exit before me, opening the door allowing light in. Some part of me is trying to remember a common saying that warns against going towards the light. But right now, disorientated and in the dark, it feels instinctual.
I left the cinema room and made it out to the lobby. I bumped into someone, but just as I utter a reflexive “sorry”, someone else bumps into me. More and more people keep entering the lobby. Be it as a response to the general panic, a desire to escape the growing crowd, or something deeper; everyone seem to gravitate towards the buildings exit. Out onto the street and in the parking lot.
One leg after another, I walk without giving much thought to what's going on around me. Or to what happened back in the cinema. Going forward in a daze, carried along by the crowd.
After the exit acts as a bottleneck, The crowd is able to spread out after getting outside. I find myself leaving between the people ahead of me, pushing towards the front of the crowd.
As I’m too busy watching my footing to give the slowing crowd or my surroundings much thought. It wasn’t until I reached the outer edge of the crowd proper that I was able to take in my surroundings more fully. And it was like I woken up. The daze I was in had me on autopilot until this moment when I set eyes upon the world around me.
Where should have been a car park in the outer suburbs, instead I find myself looking up at thick vegetation. Thick distinctly alien vegetation.
“Ah crap, we got isekaied.” someone to my right said. I was internally glad someone else came to that conclusion. It would have been kind of embarrassed if I was the only one.
Around me a few more dazed people pushed forward to the edge of the crowd before seeming to wake up. A quick glance over my shoulder suggested that they were quite a few more people to come out. So I decided to walk over to the side out of everyone's way.
I started talking to myself, thinking out loud. “alright, alright, if we've been isekaied.... Hmmmm.... Is it sci-fi or magic?”
I looked over at the forest again. Tall thin trunks, or two to three trunks per tree. Then with a few large leaves hanging down. Everything is coloured a cross between olive green and chalky white.
“It looks like it fits the magic variety better. Then again, it's not like I have firsthand experience with this. And any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic anyway.”
“Yo, what’s up?” A guy comes up. He gives me a casual head nod greeting. As if what was going on was just any other normal day. “names Steve.”
“Mac. I was just trying to figure out what's going on”
“Well you are already doing better than that lot. Half of them are in denial, and the other half are in a panic.” Steve gives a friendly smile, suggesting the comment was at least partly in jest.
“Are You familiar with isekai stories? Where the characters get transport it to a planet full of magic and monsters.” I asked him.
“Like the wizard of Oz?”
“no...” I paused, thinking about it “well, yeah. Sort of.”
“But less singing, right?” he smiled “nah, sorry. I’m more of a fan of Doki Doki Sims.”
“Anyway....” I said “There's usually magic involved. If we can open up the magical interface, then we can start using magic. In some stories it is voice activated. We just need to know the right words to say.”
“Hocus pocus! Alakazam!!” Steve said enthusiastically. There was an awkward pause for a second before Steve continued “welp, I'm out of ideas. Let me know if you managed to figure magic out.” And with that he was off just as quickly as he came.
I felt a little lost for words about the whole conversation. And needed to take a moment to gather my thoughts again before continuing.
“menu? Open menu? Stat window?” I started listing off all of the variations I could remember from different books that I've read. “Help desk? Open log? Open system? Initiate system?”
I looked over towards the crowd. It was quite sizable, definitely over a thousand people. I'll thinking about Steve I suddenly hung my head and a mix of shame and defeat.
Taking a deep breath I said “Hippity Hoppity, show me my magic properties.” Time seem to slow down as I focused on the world around me. Watching as.... nothing happened. I let out a sigh. “thank «GOD» it wasn’t that one.” But this time something did happen. A cold shiver ran out my spine, and I was gripped with a deep sense of fear.
I could tell, with every fibre of my being, that I had gotten the attention of something powerful beyond measure. Like if I was an ant, and I just gone be attention of a farmer who held a shovel in one hand and a 20L Jerry of pesticide in the other.
My life flash before my eyes. And then, a moment later, the feeling of soul crushing dread and helplessness had passed. In its wake was left the more mundane type of trauma associated with near death experiences, and a message etched into his mind.
“You are not worthy to seek audience with the pantheon of «GODS». Not yet.”
I sat there in stunned silence for what felt like hours, it was probably less than 5 minutes. I didn't know what to think, I didn't know what to think about. Getting isekaied onto an alien world was surprisingly easy to come to terms with. Finding out that «GODS» exist, and then having one such «GOD» directly speak to you... That is a lot to take in.
My turmoil of inner thoughts was snapped back into focus when someone came over to talk to me. A middle-aged woman, probably late 30s. I looked up at her and saw that she had a very worried look on their face.
“Was that you? Did you... draw their attention?” She asked.
I opened my mouth to respond, but at the same time I glanced over her shoulder at the rest of the crowd. EVERYONE was looking at me. There was no movement in the crowd, no sound of talking. Everyone had stopped what they were doing to look at me, personally.
It was unsettling.
Everyone must have noticed when the «GODS» spoke to me. Or perhaps the «GODS» contacted everyone at once. Which probably was the case. It just seems more efficient than to contact each person on a case-by-case basis. Not that supremely powerful being must be concerned with efficiency.
After realising I hadn't answered the woman. I looked back at her, but still couldn't find the words to say.
“Please don’t do it again.” She said. And all I could do was manage a weak nod in response.
When the woman turned to leave, I followed behind her. As I entered into the crowd, people started talking again. At first in hushed whispers as I passed. Then as the general volume got louder, normal conversation seemed to resume.
I looked around and realised I didn't have anywhere specific I was trying to go. Nobody else came up to start a conversation. And I felt too a self-conscious at the moment to join in with random group.
So with nothing better to do, I went back into the cinema to claim an isolated corner as my own. It was my hope that some of my more immediate problems would be solved after a few hours sleep.
. ⟨⟨ Chapter 002 ⟩⟩ Food, shelter, and an obsession with magic.
It has been 3 days since we've arrived here. For me, these last three days have been... troublesome.
TITLE ⟩ Attention of the «GODS» You have gained the attention of the God's once, and thus are more likely to do so again. +⟩ You have a weak aura of ‹Divine touched› +⟩ All humans have a partial geas. It now takes significant effort for humans to utter the name of any «GOD».
My unfortunate choice of words on the day we arrived resulted in me getting a title. And the rest of humanity getting a slightly different title. For all other humans, as well as for myself, we are unable to speak the name of any «GOD» unless we really, really mean it. Which is honestly probably for the best. Humanity is probably lucky I got the «GOD’S» attention by thanking them instead of by using some creative cuss words. The part of my title that has been given me problems has been the weak aura of ‹Divine touched›. About 1/3 about the humans have become actively hostile with me. While the other 2/3s have remained politely neutral, although slightly distant. With a very small number, let's call it a rounding error, have become creepily friendly toward. Not in a way that suggests any sort of mind control, just a cultish fascination. As for everyone else; humanity seems to have adapted surprisingly well to our new reality. All of our first world problems have taken a back seat in the face of more immediate issues. Food. Shelter. Our obsession with magic. It was on the first day, after I had already retreated inside, someone else had unlocked the secrets of magic. There's no key phrase that needed to be spoken. All that is required is for a person to enter a deep meditative state. From there it is rather intuitive. Spells, classes, titles, bloodline traits... All the things I had expected to find, in quantities far exceeding my imagination. At some time in the near future I need to sit down and dedicate an hour of three going over the system. But not right now. The other two priorities that have kept us all busy — food and shelter — have been partially solved thanks to magic. Our primary shelter, what I had originally thought to have been a cinema complex, turned out to be an amalgamation of at least a dozen different earth buildings. Including a cinema, an office building, an apartment building, a subway station, a mattress retailer, a Chinese restaurant, The Fiction section of a library, a classroom that used to teach forklift certificates..... And other random things. It was either a failed attempt at selecting a variety of buildings that we might need in this new world, or it was a highly successful attempt at taking the most obscure choices for the greatest variety. I have already seen at least a dozen people using magic to help reshape the central building. Internal plumbing and rearranging the hallways where the top two priorities. An internal electrical grid is apparently the current attempt at improving our home building. But apparently electricity, and physics in general, aren't working the way we expect them to. I guess that's the price to pay for having cool magic. For reconstructing the building, the most common magics in use have been: Geomancy, Wood Magic, Metal Smithing, Drawing Runes, and various other types of magic that don’t fit a common naming convention. Maybe all magic should just have -mancy attached to the end of the word. It works for hydromancy, pyromancy, geomancy, etc. Although adding the -smith suffix works for a lot of magics as well: Metal Smith, Wood Smith, Rune Smith. I can deep dive the linguistics of magic another day. Last but not least – Food. The limited supply of earth food that got teleported in with us quickly became a rare delicacy that is making a select few people rich on the black market. Is that for the majority of us, We have become hunters and gatherers once more. With the aid of magic to Find, identify, kill, purifier, butcher, and cook. An attempt at agriculture is being made. But it has not yet borne fruit; Both literally and figuratively. . After all that rambling on about world building and exposition and stuff, we come back to the most important part of any action adventure story....
Action and adventure (duh)

2023.06.02 22:43 jeffderek Mono Blue Voltron Deck Help

Mono Blue Voltron with [[Eligeth]] and [[Esior]].
I've been playing this deck for a few months, really enjoying it. I think it's generally in a good spot but I have a few minor quibbles with it and I would just appreciate some second looks from other smart people.
Specifically designed for a lower tier metagame where Cyclonic Rift, Back to Basics, Rhystic Study, Mystic Remora, the Free Counterspells, and most fast mana are banned.
Games vary, but ultimately I usually win by putting a bunch of equipment on one of the evasive generals, drawing a bunch of cards, and protecting the hell out of the generals with the phasing cards, countermagic, and protective equiment.
There used to be a small fliers subtheme, but it always underperformed and it has slowly been cut. At this point I don't really know what to do with the remnants. Faerie Seer and Augury Owl both sometimes pick up equipment and get useful. Siani draws cards. Heraldic Banner should probably just go. I'm also not really sure whether Pyschosis Crawler is worth it.
I love the heavy Island theme with all the islands matter cards (Caged Sun, High Tide, Gauntlet of Power, Engulf the Shore, Spectral Deluge). I wish there were more cards that took advantage of the place that I'm playing so many islands. Speaking of which I still can't decide if Burnished Hart is worth considering. It looks terrible, but ramping multiple islands would be useful.
I made 5 copies of Caged Sun with Echo Storm the other day. That was super fun.
It's a blast, and it wins way more than it should. But it's still not perfect, open to ideas.

2023.06.02 22:21 TheLegendOf1900 Advice Needed: Fire Station House Asbestos Shingle and Lead Paint Tear-Off and Re-Roof in SoCal

I am a relatively small roofing contractor. We probably do 10 re-roofs and maybe 20-30 repairs a month. 50/50 Shingle and Tile. We just got a request for quote on a 17 square Fire Station house from the 1930s and the roof tested positive for asbestos along with the paint testing positive for lead. Possibly going to need a re-sheet as well.
I've never dealt with anything like that and I'm wondering if it's even worth messing with. I obviously know there's gonna be containment issues, PPE issues, possibly certification issues and a bunch of regulation to adhere to. Is this something I should even mess with or is it straightforward and worth it?
I have already reached out to a couple different restoration companies and even other roofing contractors as well as the CSLB and OSHA for advice on how to proceed and am waiting on calls back and emails replies. If you happen to have any experience with stuff like this please let me know what I'm getting into.
Just thought I would throw it out here and see if anybody had any advice.
Here is the RFQ/Scope:

2023.06.02 21:54 NotEGayBro Nursing: A Culture of Perfection

Some of you may recognize me as the author of the post regarding my use of cocaine and me being drug tested a few months back. At that time, I was not-so-eagerly awaiting the result. As Fate (I prefer to capitalize it, as I believe it to be a divine force) would have it, the result came back positive. Unfortunately for me, I reside in a "mandatory reporting state". This means any infraction that my state's BON deems egregious enough to be reported, MUST be reported in a timely manner. That being said, my supervisor reported me.
Let me first say, before continuing, I absolutely know what I did is illegal. I knew it beforehand, I knew it during, and I know it now--I will not defend my actions. I have always been so successful, and have worked so incredibly hard all my life to be the nurse I am. I was a nurse for nearly 5 years in a specialized ICU at a Level 1 Trauma Center. I was great at my job, and I loved it. Patient advocacy has ALWAYS been my greatest concern, and I ensured I NEVER "used" before, at, or around the clinical setting. I got into an exceedingly competitive and strenuous graduate school program to earn my Doctorate, as well as an APRN license. I was a few years in when this situation occurred.
My primary reason for writing this is because I now will have to enroll in a substance abuse program for three years, in which I am told is excruciatingly tedious and not all enrollees make it through. Random drug screens can occur any day throughout this period, I am required to attend AA meetings regularly, and I am barred from working in a critical care setting for at least one year. All of this, all of my lifelong hard work down the drain because of a SINGLE positive drug screen. I don't have so much as a parking or speeding ticket on my record. I was an ambitious and high-achieving RN, and now, I have to put mine and my partner's future on pause for three more years. As we approach my main point here, I simply wish our culture was somewhat more forgiving. I made a single mistake and now, I feel as though everything I've ever done is for nothing. I realize I would need to be punished or monitored for at least some period of time, but a three year, cut-throat sentence for a singular, small infraction, in my mind, speaks to the culture that surrounds us all; we are unforgiving. I simply wish all of you who read and may be taking a substance at home in your free time to take away from this that you very well CAN end up like me. I am not invincible, and neither are you. My heart goes out to others like me, as well as to those who lost much more.
I will learn and grow from this, but I find it so disheartening to think back to how such a stupid decision could lead to such a severe consequence with resounding, profound effects. I truly feel like nursing turned its back on me for being imperfect just once. I know it wasn't right, but I thought we were all about empathy and compassion. I just needed to share anonymously. Thank you all for your time ❤️

Some motherfuckers are always trying to ice skate uphill. - The Daywalker, Third Vampire War, Age of Paranoia
Whatever I lost, I lost a long time ago. - Barbara, Third Zombie War, Age of Paranoia
This is the dumbest shit we've ever done. - Everyone everywhere.
The dumbest shit so far. - The smartass next to them.
"Captain," Chuck's voice was quiet, barely audible to her ear. "Don't react, just lay there."
Nakteti held still, able to tell by the slight tingling that Chuck was using her mastoid implant to talk to her over a secure channel.
She brought up the visual keyboard and rapidly typed out on her retinal link. "Sit-rep."
"Our four guests are talking. They think with Magnus and Surscee out in the park picking apples and you asleep, that the simple act of moving away from the computers will keep me from listening in," Chuck said.
"Patch me in," Nakteti typed.
There was a slight sound of static.
"...we knew this was a one-way trip when we left Darkside," the Rose Knight was saying.
"Well, duh, the Mantid glassed Earth and the colonies. We knew that," Sword Knight One said. Nakteti could see his face, that he was chewing on something. He swallowed. "Momma already told us that."
"The mission objectives are still unchanged. Get the SUDS back online or figure out a way to start repairs," the Rose Knight said. "Momma gave us the orders, we follow them."
"Which we are doing," the Tome Knight stated, her voice cold and remote. Nakteti noted that her face was deliberately held expressionless, but her chin was slightly tilted up, and she was looking at the internal camera of her helmet down the length of her nose. "Without the help of the alien, that AI, and those twins, we would still be stuck with our equipment malfunctioning and leaving us stuck at the center of a layered time distortion."
"Do you really trust her? Trust their story? That it's been nine thousand years since the Glassing. That there was something called the Digital Omnimessiah and the Twelve Biological Apostles?" the Rose Knight asked, a slight sneer in his voice. "That just curiosity and luck led her here?"
"Then what, she's a Mantid slave race spy? Come here to... I don't know, repair the SUDS so we get back our manpower edge?" the Tome Knight asked. This time she was the one sneering. "The stupid bullshit of reducing military manpower to bare minimum with the excuse of 'oh, we can just pull them from the SUDS and force-growth clones for them, that way their cybernetics are modern and they can be put in the SUDS at the height of their skills instead of suffering skill degradation' came back to bite us on the ass."
"Armistice agreements mandated everyone have only a quarter-million troops, outside of the United Nations of Sol," the Rose Knight said. "It kept the peace."
"Yeah, that and vegetation that would eat you if you sat in one place for too long," Sword Knight Two snorted. He chewed on something for a moment, swallowed, the continued, "Face it, we're on the edge of extinction. If the Mantid don't get us, the plants will."
"Theoretically, glassing Earth would take care of the Extinction Agenda attack," the Tome Knight said.
"We're getting side-tracked," Sword Knight Two said. "That dude, Magnus,"
"Gods above, he's fucking annoying," Sword Knight One said, chewing at the end of his sentence.
"If I hear his sister bitch about not having any fruit to eat one more time, I swear, I'm going to go completely ape shit," Sword Knight Two added. "Anyway, that dude, Magnus, he said that the next temporal dissonance layer is about to be peeled off. That leaves two more layers."
"And there's the problem. Once they peel off the last layer, they'll have full access to the SUDS facility," the Rose Knight said. "Which is in direct conflict to our mission orders to secure possession of the SUDS facility."
"Except our orders are nine thousand years out of date," the Tome Knight said. "The Combine is gone, replaced by the Imperium. I read that part. I know the guy who founded the Imperium, well, I served under him. He's some United Nations of Sol representative's son and a complete douche."
"And the Imperium was replaced by the Confederacy," Sword Knight Two said, swallowing whatever he was chewing on.
"Yeah, five thousand years after the Imperium got its skull kicked in by someone with the goofy ass name of Daxin Freeborn," Sword Knight One said. "Sounds like some hab block ganger bullshit name to me."
"And 'Martial Orders'? Like the Templars? For who? Christianity? Islam? Hinduism? Scientology?" Sword Knight Two sneered. "The whole thing sounds like bullshit to me."
"But the evidence is clear," The Tome Knight broke in.
"What evidence? A file on a computer? I can write you one that states those stupid characters from the Gorilla Girls tri-vee show took over the universe and we all have to wear gorilla costumes now," the Rose Knight said.
The Tome Knight made a disgusted noise. "The tech, dumbass."
"Watch your words and tone with me," the Rose Knight snapped.
"The technology," the Tome Knight said.
"Better."
"Our armor has the best in miniaturization tech, and we've only got a nine q-bit system. That Surscee woman has a computer embedded in her forearm that's running at least ten-twenty-four q-bits. A computer only a little bigger than a piece of gum," the Tome Knight stated. "Those temporal charges are light years ahead of anything we have."
"Mantid technology?" Sword Knight One guessed.
"If the Mantid are that advanced, we've already lost the war," the Tome Knight said. She lifted her chin again. "We must take into account the fact that nine thousand years have passed since we entered the mat-trans at the Darkside Facility to get here," she stated coldly. "The team waiting for us to return is long dead."
"Maybe we can go back and help them?" Sword Knight One asked. He frowned, then broke into a big smile.
"No. They'll have their hands full re-activating the facility from the damage from when half the staff went crazy," the Tome Knight said. She shook her head. "Losing the engineering and scientific staff means the facility is little more than a habitat orbiting an anomaly."
"We can't just leave them. We need to do something," Sword Knight Two said.
"They're dead. You can't go back in time. You'll hit the energy limit or get the worst possible outcome, or you'll spaghetti," the Tome Knight said. "I've told you that before. I stated it during the mission briefing."
"What about Momma?" Sword Knight One said, his voice wistful.
"We all knew this might be a one way trip," the Rose Knight repeated. There was silence for a moment. "I'll consider what each of you have stated and decide if the mission parameters should be adjusted," he paused. "Get some sleep."
"Not tired," Sword Knight Two said.
"Don't wanna," Sword Knight One said.
"I have research I must continue," the Tome Knight said.
"Doesn't matter. We don't have to worry about an ambush. Set reflex triggers," the Rose Knight said.
One by one they confirmed they'd set their reflex triggers.
"Nunc me dormiam," the Rose Knight said, his voice replaced by a woman's voice that was accompanied by a quick series of tones.
Nakteti watched as all of their eyes closed and they moved almost immediately into REM sleep.
"Mnemonic triggers," Chuck said. "I got the tones. In case it requires that female voice, I've got a high fidelty multi-tonal recording."
"Good," Nakteti said. "I don't want to kill them if I don't have to."
"And if they force it?" Chuck asked.
"Then I'll kill them."
-----
Nakteti spooled out the superconductor cable carefully, moving between one temporal disruptostabilizer and the other. She stopped, plugged it into the repeater, then ran another cable.
She was going over the discussion again in her head.
The four had still never taken off their armor, and Nakteti kept chewing over that fact, over and over.
She looked around, realized she was the only living thing for a couple thousand miles, and touched her implant.
"Chuck, do you read?" she asked.
"I read you, Captain," Chuck said. "Line is secure."
"Good," she said. "Do we have any visuals on who is inside that armor and what they look like?"
"Internal helmet cam," Chuck said.
"Anything besides that?" Nakteti asked.
"No. It's live feed," Chuck said.
"Is it?" Nakteti asked. "Seriously. Is it? Could it be computer overlay?"
"You mean, they're using digital avatars?" Chuck said.
"It's just something about the feed. Something about them that I keep chewing over," Nakteti said. "Can Surscee get a better read on them?"
"No. Their armor is sealed. It's a closed system with memory metal joints," Chuck said. "Internal power systems. The only thing that armor gives off is their suit telemetry, communications, radiation, and visual light reflection."
Nakteti sat down on a bench, pulling out her water flask and taking a long drink.
"Something's not right. We've been doing this for months, maybe a year or more, it's hard to tell with the temporal disruptions," Nakteti said. "We know virtually nothing about them. If anything, they'll withdrawing more and more."
She took another drink and put away the flask. "See if you can hack their armor systems further, but be subtle."
"The only input their systems allow is that one single encrypted channel, and then only compressed bursts," Chuck said. "They aren't even using a frequency agile system."
Chuck made a slight static noise. "You're right. That is odd. We don't really have any schematics for Combine Era power armor in our database, but the fact it's completely sealed is weird."
Nakteti thought for a long moment. "You record their conversations, right?"
"I record all of it. The one thing I've managed to do is break their telemetry feed," Chuck said. "Let me look at the feed better."
"Show me that last conversation, only give me an hour or so before that, just visual, on fast forward," Nakteti said.
"What are you looking for?" Chuck asked.
"I don't know," Nakteti admitted.
She watched it through twice.
Something about it was bugging her.
She reached in her pocket and pulled out a Goody Yum-Yum Bar, unwrapping it and chewing on it while she watched it through a third time.
She was halfway through the fourth watch when it dawned on her.
They were chewing on nothing. She never saw them put anything in their mouths. They never had food in their mouths when they talked.
"Chuck?" she asked.
"Here, Captain," the DS answered.
"I need you to run a fast forward. Check to see if you ever see them take a pull of nutripaste or water. Especially around the time they start chewing," she said.
"Checking," Chuck said.
Nakteti finished off her Goody Yum-Yum bar before Chuck got back to her.
"I've checked all the telemetry, and no, they never take a drink of water or any nutripaste nor do they ever appear to have something in their mouths when they talk," Chuck paused. "It points at your idea that what we're seeing is being generated by their suit computers."
"See what you can do about getting me a look at them," Nakteti said.
"I'll be careful," Chuck promised.
Nakteti looked up at where the 'sun' was frozen in the magnetic guidance tube. It had several others just off of it, making it look like a cluster of three stars.
There's something going on, and I don't like it, she thought.
-----
"Anything?" Nakteti asked.
"No. It's really weird. I should be able to cut through archaic code like a hot knife through butter, but it's more than just the code. There's weird hardware safety interlocks. Everything is extremely partitioned, more than even Atrekna War combat armor," Chuck said. "One thing I did get, is that the armors definitely have chronotron leakage. Not much, but enough to tell me that they're using chronotron for something inside the suit."
"Stabilization? Like Confederate armor during the Atrekna war?" Nakteti asked.
Chuck just shrugged. "I'm not sure. You're right, there's something hinky about them. After you noticed that they don't eat I took a better look. There's something weird with their telemetry."
"Like what?" Nakteti asked.
"Like, according to their brain waves, right now, the two Sword Knights are asleep. High activity REM sleep," Chuck said. "Yet, they're out there helping Magnus lay down the last of the control cabling."
"That is strange," Nakteti said. She sighed. "I wish I knew more about Terran combat systems."
"Same here," Chuck said. He looked up suddenly as Nakteti heard the door swoosh open behind her. "Captain!"
She was already lunging forward, landing on her catching hands, using her feet and gripping hands to push herself into a roll that took her behind an unpowered console.
"You might as well come out, xeno," the Rose Knight said. "You brought a sword to a blaze rifle fight."
"Do not do this. We are allies," Chuck tried.
"Silence, AI," the Rose Knight said. "You are an amalgamation of circuits and code, I am a flesh and blood being, touched by the creator himself. You have no right to speak to me, much less attempt to command me."
Nakteti used the time the Rose Knight was monologuing to draw her sword as well as to reach down and activate her personal protective field. She sent off a quick set of emojis to let Surscee and Magnus know they were about to be attacked by the Chronotronic Knights.
"I am blessed by the Digital Omnimessiah," Chuck started to say.
"BLASPHEME!" the Rose Knight shouted.
Nakteti winced at the blaze rifle fired. It made a high pitched screaming sound as the gold/white beam of energy lanced out, bisecting Chuck.
"Please," Chuck said. "As if."
Nakteti pulled a device out of her pouch and slid it across the floor, behind another console. It winked on and Chuck was crouched down behind the console, a blaster pistol in his hand. He looked at Nakteti and nodded.
"Don't make me kill you, Rose Knight," Nakteti said.
"SILENCE, XENO!" the Rose Knight screamed partway through Nakteti's plea.
Nakteti could smell it suddenly. Ozone, scorched copper, rusted iron.
Wrath.
She looked at Chuck and mouthed "Enraged" at him.
Chuck gave an 'of course' slump to his head and shoulders, shaking his head at the same time.
"Come out. You're only prolonging the inevitable," the Rose Knight said. "Your friends are dead or will be soon. They are armed with only swords and are not even wearing armor."
"Take off a limb or two, take them alive," Nakteti ordered over her retinal link.
"Let me try something," Chuck said. He raised his face to the ceiling. ""Nunc me dormiam," he said in a woman's voice.
"YOU'RE NOT MOMMY!" the Rose Knight shrieked.
"Worth a try," Chuck put on Nakteti's retinal link.
Nakteti shrugged, waiting.
The Rose Knight was ranting about xenos, Earth, the Mantid.
Magnus and Surscee both flashed emojis back, Chuck just nodded.
"Ready?" Nakteti asked Chuck over the retinal link.
Chuck nodded.
Nakteti ended up curling up as the Rose Knight started screaming and shooting the walls, the ceiling, random computers.
"I WANT MY MOMMY!" he screamed, his voice crackling with distortion. "MOMMY! DADDY! WHERE ARE YOU?" The sound of the rifle being used to smash things was loud in the sudden silence.
Nakteti blinked and looked at Chuck, who shrugged and mouthed "enraged".
The Rose Knight stopped screaming and Chuck stood up, leveling the blaster pistol.
The Rose Knight was punching and kicking chairs, consoles, computer equipment.
Aiming, the hard-light manifested Chuck fired, hitting the Rose Knight in the knee.
Nakteti rolled out from behind the console, running on four limbs, using her legs and catching hands, holding her sword tight with her gripping hands.
The Rose Knight screamed, his words incoherent.
The Rose Knight's lower leg blew off in a shower of sparks and fluids. The armored Terran went down on one knee, still screaming.
Nakteti came in, standing up, hacking one, twice with the nanite sharpened blade.
The limbs came off in a shower of sparks, showering Nakteti with hydraulic fluids.
Nakteti ignored it.
She'd been splattered with worse.
Chuck stepped up and kicked the Rose Knight onto his back, putting on foot on the armored man's chest.
"I want my mommy," the Rose Knight said.
Nakteti realized that he was weeping.
She held out her hand. "Why? Why did you attack us?"
"Mission. The mission," the Rose Knight said. He started crying again. "I want my mommy."
"That panel. Open it," Chuck said, pointing at a seemless patch on the armor. "Just press against it and let go."
Nakteti did so. The panel slid open, revealing an induction port. Nakteti held up her finger where she had an implanted induction link. Chuck nodded.
Nakteti pressed her finger against the induction jack.
"Let's get a look at you," Chuck said.
"No. You're not supposed to. Don't," the Rose Knight wept. "Mommy."
"Digital Omnimessiah preserve us," Chuck whispered, his eyes going wide with horror. He looked down.
"Have mercy upon us for what we have done," Chuck said.

2023.06.02 21:37 Skeletoryy WORLD BUILDING POST: On The Story Of Alasha

The Story Of Alasha is one of the first verses in the Book Of Land, the holy book of the Grandchildren Of Alash. It reads as follows:
One stormy night, many a year ago, a man lay shipwrecked, stranded on an island that is now home to our shrine. He was a member of a fishing crew and the only survivor, half-dead and battered. In an attempt to escape the beating of the waves, he crawled away from the beach and towards the safety of a cave, a cave to change our lives.
Down below, our god Alash was watching this man, clearly destined to die yet determined to live for a few seconds, minutes, longer. He was impressed by the determination and fortitude of the young man and took pity on him. As he reached the cave, Alash breathed new life into him, the life of the land that was crying out in pain at the desert, and told him he could live, if he could only deliver this message to civilisation for, as the burden of the desert grew stronger, Alash's voice was confined to his last bastion of power, the Island Of Alash.
However, in his weakened state, the healing went wrong and the young man lost his body, simply becoming the essence of the land, mist in the shape of a man. Alash was deeply disappointed for his failure in his promise but the young man thanked him, for he was now saved from certain death, was he not?
As a revitalised, god made vessel, the man, now Alasha, the Son Of Alash, returned to the mainland, where he told our predecessors not to worry, frightened as they were about his form and about what happened to him and the suffering of our land and god and how we must fight the desert and protect the land that keeps us alive. If we do so, he said, we shall recieve many a gift and bountiful harvest. Upon saying these words he plunged into the ground and all around the people sprung up flowers and trees, Alasha joining his father forevermore under the ground.
Our ancestors then, seeing this miracle, realised that if a being this strong needed help, help must be given, and so began our religion, our crusade to save Alash.
