2023.06.02 23:43 Particular-Roll-585 Someone please help
I’ve had eanose/throat problem for about 8 months now. First symptom was dizziness then fullness in left ear and muffled hearing. Today I had an appointment with a hearing specialist and they done hearing test and pressure test and said they was fine. Tonight I have gone to the gym Galway through a set I have made a pig-grunt sound and my breathing cut out from nose. Quite scary. I have had a lot of thick sticky mucus in back of throat for a while aswell. Could this be sinus problem? Also I’m going on a plane next month am I at risk of busting ear drum? I’ve been passed around for a while now not knowing what’s wrong so any help would be appreciated. I’m 21 and male 12stone 7.

im not diagnosed,, just suspecting but i’m wondering if animal noises are part of hallucinations. i hear not people talking.. but always some sort of animal.. i can distinctly remember when this has happened and the main two times they stuck out to me where when i heard a pig snort.. and i was just watching a show,, at first i thought it was because the show had a pig in the episode but i rewatched it to make sure. the pig didn’t make any noises at all. the second was a couple weeks ago when i heard this buzzing noise. like a horse fly buzzing around my head but when i got up from my bed,, there weren’t any bugs in my room whatsoever..

Apparently, a sedan slammed into me, which launched me off my bike into the intersection. Of course, they took off.
I spent three days in the Burlington ICU and another four or so days in the regular area.
They completely destroyed my clavicle, and broke eight ribs, one of which punctured my lung.
This is not some kind of "look at me" post, I am honestly posting everywhere I can to just try to find information.
My helmet has a really nice scrape on it, so that is cool.
Weird thing? The bike is PERFECTLY fine. Just some scratches.
I am not a litigious person, but damn right I want to sue.

In a way, this is my Deadhead origin story. It's 1989. I was 14 and had just discovered “classic rock." My native musical tendencies at the time, trended around 80s hip-hop (Run-DMC, Beastie Boys), thrash metal (the big 3) and various NWOBHM—particularly Iron Maiden. The weird, disturbing/cartoonish/horror iconography and imagery were important to 14 year old me ( I guess in a way, I was primed for the Dead.)
Anyway, around this time I had an older cousin who hipped me to Led Zeppelin, Hendrix, and The Doors. Also, that summer was the 20th anniversary of Woodstock, and MTV aired the Wadleigh film I think several times. I was absolutely spellbound. I taped most of the film to a VCR cassette and probably watched Alvin Lee and Ten Years After’s blissed out performance of I’m Going Home everyday for like 3 months. I wanted Alvin Lee’s whole Woodstock vibe injected directly into my veins. I had become a wannabe hippie.
This neo-hippie vibe seemed to infect my whole friend group. We all read the Beats and Huxley’s The Doors of Perception and traded 60s/70s tapes—Floyd, The Who, The Doors, Cream. We of course started smoking pot and spending hours spacing out to psychedelic music or re-watching Fantasia, Heavy Metal, or 2001 for the umpteenth time. It was all way more interesting than Motley Crue or Winger or Bon Jovi or whatever the fuck MTV was doing.
And of course, I had heard of Grateful Dead by then—I was like 12 when “Touch of Grey” was a hit. And they were a big mainstream rock band in 1989. The news ran segments on them when they came to the area.
But initially, I thought they were kinda lame and corny--like the Beach Boys and Kokomo. Sure, the imagery was dope—like one would expect from a metal or hard rock band. But the Dead were definitely and (for me at the time) disappointingly not hard rock. And those Dead guys for sure did not look like the bad ass dudes from Slayer. From what little I heard, I was not impressed. But how to access the good stuff I knew must be there?
In a way I am a little envious of young people discovering music today. It’s all out there. Want to get into Bob Dylan? You can spend a long weekend online listening to his discography and reading countless essays about his art and emerge as a fairly knowledgeable Dylan fan 3 or 4 days later. The Dead may take a bit longer to fully grok, but all the shows are online and there is no shortage of info about where to start. These days, an intrepid neophyte could get a broad understanding of the Dead in a week or two.
In 1989, I was flying blind. It’s weird to think about how differently we used to conceptualize and listen to rock music back then. At the time rock music was rooted in mystery and scarcity. I was limited to the maybe twenty or so cassettes I had, which I listened to over and over and over again. All I knew about rock music was what I saw on MTV, read in Spin or Rolling Stone, or heard about from friends, older cousins, and siblings.
So when I looked to get into the Dead, I had little bearing for which to set my course. I picked up Aoxomoxoa at the mall because the cover looked cool. And…it was okay. Look, compared to some of the other classic rock era albums I had been exposed to by that time it just didn't really rock or roll very much. At the time, I much preferred Blue Cheer’s Vincebus Eruptum to Aoxomoxoa (and I kinda still do).
Anyway, fall of 1989 was the beginning of high school. New people and new cliques. This kid who became part of our group had a Deadhead older brother in college. And he had the goods. For the price of one or two Maxells, we could get a bootleg. Since I knew next to nothing, I asked for a show he liked. He gave me an aud from a 78 show (a show I actually like now!). At the time however, this seemingly failed even more than the Aoxomoxoa album. The sound was muddy and murky, and some of the songs reminded me of Jimmy Buffett on quaaludes.
But side 2 of tape 3 was called “Filler: Set 2 Avalon 1968.” It listed four songs like this: “Dark Star>St. Stephen>Eleven>Death What the fuck is this? Filler? I wanted killer, and now I was getting filler? Hmm. I’d heard of Dark Star. I knew St. Steven from Aoxomoxoa. “Death” was certainly intriguing. Alright, let’s give it a go…

This is pure, uncut Primal Dead. For me, this show is exhibit A of Jerry Garcia as a swaggering gun slinging guitar god. His playing is full of snarling psychedelic attitude and creativity (I think he’s playing a Les Paul here?). You know how Phish people used to refer to “Machine Gun Trey?” Yes, well, here we have Flame Thrower Jerry.
Let’s consider Grateful Dead in the fall of 1968. This show occurs at a time when Pigpen and Weir had presumably been kicked out of the Dead. In the days leading up to the Avalon shows on the 12th and 13th Jerry, Phil, Mickey and Bill were kinda sorta rethinking the Dead line-up w/the “Mickey and the Heartbeats” shows played at the crosstown Matrix on the 8th, 9th and 10th.
Indeed, Pig did not play on the 10/12 Avalon show. For his part Weir does what he can rhythmically as Jerry, Phil, Mickey, and Billy lay waste to all before them. I mean, you’ve got to love a band that fires a dude and then just lets them stick around and earn the job back. Knowing the back story now, this show almost seems like some kind of trial by fire for ol’ Bob. I mean, imagine trying to keep up with this music? In short, this is elemental, fire-breathing psychedelic acid rock played by young men with something to prove.
The Dark Star is early—not as open ended as 72-74 Dark Stars. The Live/Dead version, recorded about six months later, is perhaps more mature and developed, but this one has off-the charts energy and inventiveness. This is my favorite of the early Primal Dead, pre-72 Dark Stars.
I think The Eleven here is an all-timer. Jerry and Phil conjuring viscous curlicues of dark light while Bill and Mickey lock into some kind of inter-galactical syncopation. And the Death Don’t Have No Mercy is just phenomenal. My personal favorite. Jerry really goes for it—he never apes the blues, but he makes it his own. Really passionate guitar playing and even more passionate vocals.
Like the Dark Star here, The Other One would range farther (furthur? lol) out in the future, but this version is just a snarling beast, dripping with liquid magma and unrelenting energy. Likewise, the jam on New Potato Caboose scales the holy psychedelic summit of bliss.
For personal reasons, of course, 10/12/68 is one of my favs. This is a great show to check out if you are looking for raw, primal 60s Dead—an interesting companion to Live/Dead.
It’s also a good gateway show, especially for rockers. I got a few hard rockers turned on to the Dead through this show. The balls-out energy and talent is palpable. Years ago, I played The Other One from this show to an Army buddy who likes metal like Mastadon and Opeth. About halfway through he low whistled and said, “Goddamn, that hippie motherfucker is playing the shit out of that guitar. Gotta respect that.”

I guess this could be a semi-update to my last post about this but I adopted a 2nd cat two months ago, a 1-year-old female. My first cat is an 8-year-old female who likes to usually sleep and chill majority of the day.
However the younger one wants to play often and is very energetic (obviously). My older cat still hates my younger one, hisses at her and growls when she sees her. Doesn’t play with her at all. I feel sad for my younger cat. I feel like she gets anxious because she knows my older one doesn’t like her and I think that in turn makes her kinda nervous with me. When I try to pet her she runs away. She loves playing but it seems like I’m just not satisfying her needs for stimulation even though we play for at least 20min every day. I see her making biscuits now and again so I’m assuming she’s somewhat happy. But i can’t help the feeling that she would truly thrive and be happier in an environment with another cat who will play with her.
I just feel so fucking horrible. I take her from a shelter for two months and now she would have to go to a whole new environment and get use to that too? I’ve never been a cat owner before this and I feel like a dumbass because I didn’t do any research about age gaps, I just saw her in a little cubby at Petco and wanted to adopt her. But right now I’m thinking long term, and long term I don’t think my older cat will end up liking the younger one (more so just tolerating her) and the younger one will be bored/not as happy without a playmate. The younger one supposedly had a sister the same age before she got adopted so i think she was use to having at least one cat with her to play with.
If you were in my position what would you do? Would you give it more time and see what happens? Or seek out people who have a sweet, cat friendly cat who will make the younger one happier and possibly find her a new home? I feel like a monster either way and it’s really stressing me out and weighing me down when I come home to see her looking sad balled up on her cat tree…I just think me adopting her wasn’t the right decision for either of my cats now

Hello everyone! My name is J and I’m working on my very own game. I’m still deciding if I want to be a direct fnaf game or its own stand alone project. If it were a stand alone project the restaurant that would be in the game would probably be called something like Hammy’s Hamburgers and Shakes. As, personally, pig based anything give me the hibbi jibbies.

Hi i've had guinea pigs for many years i had both tame and very skittish pigs. I decided to get guinea pigs again but this time so i got one i got him a very big place with lots of places to hide, i clean his cage often and give him organic fresh food. At night i open the cage and let him roam in an large empty room with some toys in it so he gets some exercise.
No matter what i do my piggie is an asshole to me...i understand they are prey animals and need special bonding time. I tried everything but at this point i'm convinced he must be retarded or have some neurological damage. I've been to a vet to see if he got any problems but he turns out to be healthy.
I can't pick him up, he won't let me touch him, he makes loud noises all day long, he bites me(never happened to me with other piggies). I try giving him food daily with my hand, sit by his cage reading just try to bond with him. I brought other piggies to see if i could get bonding but he ends up attacking the piggy to the point when there's blood drawn. He is always extremely aggressive, from the dozen piggies i owned this never happened to me. I took him to a shelter and asked for advice but they never seen this before the storenowner wont accept him back. I started hating the guinea pig but i can't get it over my heart to put it down at the vet so im thinking of releasing him in the nearby forest

Hello, DnD Reddit! This is my first post on this subreddit but I hope to post more in the future. Recently I bought myself a notebook and I decided to make it into a character notebook where I keep everything about my characters in terms of personality, backstory, essentially everything that wasn't the mechanics of the character. While scrolling the internet for ideas on DnD character writing I came across Ginny Di's seven-day character challenge with the purpose of developing a character more and really getting your mind into the mind of the character and thinking about things you wouldn't usually think about. I decided to share my journey of character development with all of you to maybe get some feedback, and comments, or maybe to even help people who are struggling with character writing and want some ideas themself (also o spread the word of Ginny Di highly encourage everyone to watch her videos). I decided to use my character Valkaria, a tiefling paladin, as my test subject.
Day 1: write a diary entry from the point of view of your character
Ok, so I may have gone a bit overboard as instead of writing one entry I wrote three as there were a few moments I had in mind that were central to her backstory, so I wrote all three. I found doing this to be extremely helpful because it not only made me think about Valkaria's voice, how she sounds, what words she uses, and how she speaks and writes, but also how Valkaria changed through these points. How her voice changed or her writing style changed between entry one and entry two were things I took notice of while writing.
Valkaria (even though this is not her background) comes from nobility, as such she had a very formal education so she speaks very eloquently using big words and tends to stretch her sentences with fluff for that extra dramatic touch. She also comes from a family of pride so she's very boisterous and doesn't show any negativity in her speech in writing because that is a sign of weakness and in her mind, she's not weak. This was especially evident in entry one. For this entry, I decided to write about the time she ran away with her lover and left her life of comfort and riches behind for the pursuit of love. In this entry her words exude happiness as she's hopeful for the future she is giddy as she is running away into the night with the person she fell in love with and she's having a freedom she didn't have before. It also made me think about how she was feeling toward her lover at that moment. During this moment I decided that she's never been more in love with him. He is her night in shining armor saving her from her tower like the fairytales and romance novels she used to read. In this entry, she seems like someone whos happy, hopeful, and free which is what I was going for.
The second entry I decided to make it the turning point of Valkaria's backstory the day her husband died and Valkaria is forced to start her journey. Now some may think why would she take the time to write a diary entry? Her husband was just murdered and she has to leave her son for his safety while she journeys the world finding the people responsible for her husband's death and fulfilling the oath she made to her god, how could anyone find time to write in a diary during that time of overwhelming grief and uncertainty. This made me think there is one thing that would make Valkaria do something unreasonable but at the same time try to keep herself together for that moment and that is her son. So I decided that this entry would be Valkaria finding her old diary from her youth and deciding to leave her diary with her son to give him a piece of his mother in case something happened to Valkaria or she was gone for longer than she hopes, and this entry kind of serves as a goodbye to her son as she outlines the emotions she's feeling over everything that happened in a single day and she is constantly writing about how she doesn't want to leaver her son but she needs to keep him safe and how she loves him but she needs to stay away all because this entry if for him. This is also the entry where Valkaria shows a change in her voice and personality after all how could she, not she just watched her husband get slain in front of her that would mess anyone up. In the first entry, she shows signs of hope, of being prideful as she claims that she's not afraid and that she can handle anything that comes her way, but in this entry, she is showing signs of weakness (something she hates and doesn't ever show) and fear. While she tries so hard to keep herself together her entire world is crumbling and she just doesn't have the strength to and it shows in the words she uses, the way her sentences are shorter and her words carry a more tired diction than someone who is formally educated. I even took it upon myself to make this entry written in handwriting that was shaky and messy because she doesn't have it in her to write eloquently anymore.
The final entry I decided to make it a time when she was on her adventure and working as a monster hunter but before she met the party. She uses this notebook as more as a job ledger than a diary. She starts each entry with a note about the job she took and what the reward was before writing. By this time Valkaria is no longer the girl she once was. She no longer starts her entry with a dear diary just starts writing. Valkaria used to write in flowy sentences with long words but she doesn't do that anymore everything is short, to the point, and with little to no emotion other than the feeling that she's lost she keeps trying to talk to her god but is getting no response and she's nowhere near finding out who's responsible for her husband's death. Her entries are more so notes about her time in battle, the town she's in, and little reminders to herself like sending X amount of coin to Malik (her son) and his caretaker. The only reason Valkaria still writes is because of her son, she wants to get back to him and she will use this notebook as a way to talk about her adventures. Her son consumes Valkaria's every thought as she thinks about what her son will think of her as a monster hunter and all the blood on her hands, yes she's saved people but she's also done some morally questionable things. She also writes about her husband and asks if he's proud of her now, leaving their son and pursuing the life she now has. Every entry is filled with a feeling of lost like she doesn't know what to do or who she is anymore. She is no longer the Valkaria that was being whisked away into the night or spending her days with her loving husband without a care in the world, and as she changed her voice changed.
This challenge really helped me think about the type of person Valkaria is and how her backstory changed her. I started asking questions like she behaved this way before why does she behave this way now? As well as, despite this drastic personality changed does she still show habits from her former self and if so what habits or traits? Like for example in her past she was the type of person who had so much pride she hated showing any weakness because she couldn't see herself as anything else other than the great and brilliant Valkara. She still keeps the trait of not showing weakness nor being the type of person to ask for help but it's now because she has to be the strong paladin, the strong mother, she just has to be strong, and if she's not then she's afraid of what will happen what she breaks. Writing actual diary entries has also shown me that when a person goes through an event that changes who they are whether for better or worse it's not just how we portray the character that changes but the little things about the character such as the way the speak or the way they write. This realization made me think of Fjord from Critical Role's campaign the Mighty Nein and how after his ship sunk he took up a voice resembling that of his former captain as a way to protect himself and appear strong but after breaking free from Uko'toa (I hope I spelled that correctly) he changed his voice to show the huge milestone change in his character. That's kind of what I wanted to portray with Valkaria how her voice and diction changed after losing her husband and why.
Hope you all enjoyed hearing about my day of character thinking and development. Because this post is already so long and it would be a whole novel if I do all seven days in one post I decided I will just do one post for each day of the challenge. I can’t even look forward to the one fun thing about being an adult (alcohol) anymore cause of my stupid fucking GERD that makes me feel like my throat, chest, or stomach is on fire. Plus I have no one to go out with since everyone I’ve tried being friends with either abandoned me, was a backstabbing shittalker, was just trying to stick their cock inside of me, never made any effort to stay in touch, or has nothing in common with me anymore and just talks about their boring ass jobs. And going out at night alone is a big no-no, or else I’ll be raped, kidnapped, killed or all 3!!!!
I don’t want your useless fucking therapy, pills, prison aka “mental hospitals”, suicide hotlines, and bullshit “advice” or motivational quotes. I need to either win the lottery or find a way to make a live-able passive income in the least infuriating way possible. So after over a year and a half since I graduated high school, I finally stopped being a pussy and started chasing my dreams. I took a few online courses on eBay and digital marketing (which don’t count for a degree because colleges are just money grubbing pigs that don’t give a single fuck about you) and started my eBay resale business in January and my YouTube channel in March. I’m also taking a YouTube course. I haven’t made enough money yet for it to be a liveable income, but hey at least it’s better than nothing. I need this to happen so fucking badly, I don’t want to be a worthless miserable wage slave until Im old with no healthcare and die (yay Late Stage Capitalism!) I want financial freedom and the time to enjoy my hobbies like gaming, drawing, skating, watching TV, and martial arts with no worries like when I was 3-7 years old. I’ve watched my parents come home miserable, angry and tired from work ever since I was little, and I don’t understand how I’m forced to do the same and am just supposed to be okay with it.
So I found out about ewhoring and it turns out a decent amount of women hit the fucking jackpot. A troupe of a half dozen comic dwarfs also appear in The Mystery Knight, using pig bladders, like Robert was piss-drunk when he was killed by a pig. Dunk was championed by Robert's grandfather, Lyonel Baratheon, who defeated Robert Ashford during the tourney. Lord Lyonel later rebelled against the Iron Throne, after Duncan the Small betrayed the Laughing Storm by breaking off a betrothal to his daughter, similar to how Rhaegar betrayed Robert by crowning his betrothed at the Harrenhal Tourney. Duncan the Small's betrayal led Egg to arrange a marriage between his daughter Rhaelle and Lyonel's heir, which put Robert Baratheon in the line of succession; this family history would color Robert's perception of Rhaegar's betrayal, driving him to improve upon his grandfather's revenge.
Steffon was the name given to Robert Baratheon's father; Dunk was betrayed by red-apple Steffon Fossoway at Ashford, which led his cousin Raymun to create an offshoot branch, the green-apple Fossoways. A tender, protective Fossoway husband is used at the Purple Wedding to demonstrate how callous it would have been for Rhaegar to intentionally crown another women with his pregnant, delicate wife Princess Elia present. A poison apple brings down Snow White, after the evil queen discovers the huntsman replaced her heart with a boar's heart, conjuring up Robert's death scene which reminds Ned of his promise to Lyanna:

In the last part, we used the evil queen's magic mirror from Snow White to provide insight into Robert through Cersei. Like he projected Lyanna onto Cersei on their wedding night, Robert projects his own actions onto Rhaegar, while caressing the cheek of Lyanna's statue and secretly lamenting to himself that he was with her sexually just once:
This subtext is mirrored by Jon Connington's love for Rhaegar, as he laments that Rhaegar ass-ended his tower only once. Connington then states that all the women cried to Rhaegar's music, like Lyanna cried at Harrenhal, reinforcing the link between this passage and the scene in the crypts.
Robert's false accusation of rape mirrors Lord Mathis Rowan's daughter's lie which landed Dareon, a singer and harpist, like Rhaegar, on the Wall.
Jon Snow ends up at the Wall as an indirect consequence of Rhaegar being falsely accused of the rape of Lyanna. Jon later betrays the Watch to save (fake) Arya and is murdered as a result, like Arya murders Dareon for desertion; if she understood why Dareon took the black, maybe she'd be more forgiving of his betrayal. She might not be, because of the same conditioning that prevents Ned from showing mercy to Gared after he was chased south of the Wall by a direwolf. Likewise, if Rhaegar told Robert that he crowned Lyanna by mistake, Robert would still be unable to forgive the public humiliation he suffered as a result. And so despite Rhaegar's willingness to defend himself in a Trial by Seven, Robert went along with the rebel's plot to overthrow the Targaryen dynasty, which involved abducting both Rhaegar and Lyanna, and stashing her in a tower for the duration of the rebellion.
Horny as ever and near the tower of joy, travelling alone to maintain his secrets, Robert sought out his lady love after his only defeat at Ashford; fear of death has a way of driving men back into the womb. Robert claimed Lyanna at the tower she was imprisoned in, and she used his hunting knife, the one given to him as a gift from Jon Arryn, to defend herself.

Sometime after his loss at Ashford, Robert appeared at Stoney Sept wounded and alone, while waiting for Ned to bring reinforcements from the North.
Robert fathered his bastard Bella in a brothel before the Battle of the Bells, a nod to Belle from Beauty & the Beast. This is just one of many acts that depicts his bestial nature; despite being in the midst of a war he claims to be fighting for Lyanna, Robert still found time to fuck all the whores at the Peach:
This bestial nature and Ned's willingness to enable it is put on full display when Robert returns to the Trident in A Game of Thrones. Robert allows Lady and Mycah to be killed as vengeance for Joffrey’s injury, despite later admitting he knew his heir was lying. Joffrey sustained this injury at the Trident because he drunkenly misperceived the fight between Arya and the butcher’s boy, and cruelly acted on his ‘chivalric duty’ to defend noble ladies. Likewise, Robert (and everyone else) misperceived Rhaegar’s intent when he crowned Lyanna, and his fervor for vengeance led him to go along with a plot to abduct her and pin the blame on Rhaegar, like Joffrey lied about what transpired during the fight. Both Lady the direwolf and wolf-blooded Lyanna were held accountable for crimes they were innocent of; Lyanna’s crowning may have suggested to Robert that she actively enticed Rhaegar, like rape victims are routinely scrutinized for their attire and other non-sexual behaviors to suggest they somehow invited their rapes. Ned went along with these obviously unjust actions, out of loyalty to his friend and king, and to prevent further harm to his family.
Most assume Gregor Clegane is the giant in armor made of stone in Bran’s vision of the Trident… yet he wasn’t present during the events Bran envisions. This dark shadow is a better fit for Robert, a veritable giant who won the throne at the Trident, who is first introduced as having gained eight stone, with a girth to match his height (like a mountain), and whose blood turns black when he is mortally wounded by a boar.
It would not be unusual for Bran to see both a person’s physical form and their shadow at the same time; this is how shadows work. Ned undoubtedly experiences inner turmoil in this scene, going along with injustice in service to a cowardly king despite the pain it causes his daughters. So, it's easy to see how the shadow with the face of the hound and the golden shadow are both cast by Ned, depicting a light and dark side at war within himself, representing his competing duties to his king and children which led him to execute Lady and accept Mycah's unjust death. It's not unusual that Ned would have multiple shadows, a dark and a light side making him grey as the direwolf on his sigil; recall, Stannis tells us that some lights cast more than one shadow:

This part aims to provide additional evidence that Robert lived up to his moniker, the Demon of the Trident, casting him as close to black as grey can get. King Robert is an avatar for all the worst flaws of Westerosi culture, a man enabled to wield massive power who yet skirted any sense of responsibility and chose to commit a mountain of moral transgressions in service to his personal desires.

Cersei's face was a study in contempt. "What a jape the gods have made of us two," she said. "By all rights, you ought to be in skirts and me in mail."
Purple with rage, the king lashed out, a vicious backhand blow to the side of the head. She stumbled against the table and fell hard, yet Cersei Lannister did not cry out. Her slender fingers brushed her cheek, where the pale smooth skin was already reddening. On the morrow the bruise would cover half her face. "I shall wear this as a badge of honor," she announced.
The Horned Demon of the Trident
Next had come King Robert himself, with Lady Stark on his arm. The king was a great disappointment to Jon. His father had talked of him often: the peerless Robert Baratheon, demon of the Trident, the fiercest warrior of the realm, a giant among princes. Robert Baratheon bears a striking resemblance to Gaston from Beauty & the Beast, who imprisons his romantic interest and lies to incite violence against a rival. Gaston is driven by jealousy of the Beast and humiliation over Belle's rejection. Disney’s adaptation of Beauty & the Beast was released in 1991, just five years before A Game of Thrones was published.

Martin has shown keen interest in Beauty & the Beast; adapting the tale for TV in the late 80s was a high point of his career. He even named his bookstore in Santa Fe Beastly Books, and named the cinema next door for Jean Cocteau, who also adapted the tale and created an earlier version of Gaston). This concept of kidnapping one’s romantic interest and blaming it on a rival to incite violence also crops up in The Princess Bride, which Martin has stated is his favorite fantasy film after the Lord of the Rings series.
Behaving like Prince Humperdinck from The Princess Bride or Gaston from Beauty & the Beast, driven by rage over the incident at Harrenhal and a family history of Targaryen betrayal, Robert lied about his queen of love and beauty and made Rhaegar out to be a beast, having them both kidnapped (with the help of his allies) but pretending otherwise as a pretext to win the throne. He then had to bury this secret, as he would lose support if it was known that the rebellion was built on such a malicious lie.
Martin is obviously inspired by Disney. In the last part, we showed how the torture of the Blue Bard, ordered by Cersei to extract a confession to undermine Margaery, is meant to reflect the story of Snow White, in which her vain and wicked step-mother is told by a magic mirror that the princess is more beautiful, leading her to send a huntsman to kill her. The huntsman takes Snow White into the deep of the wood but lets her flee, presenting a boar’s heart to the evil queen instead. Similarly, Robert is a huntsman who is killed by a boar, with the aid of strongwine supplied by his evil queen. Additional elements of Disney's Snow White & the Seven Dwarfs can be seen in parallels between Robert's only loss at Ashford and Dunk's trial at the Ashford Tourney in The Hedge Knight.
When Dunk travels to the Ashford Tourney, he recites lyrics from the Seven Dwarf's song Heigh-ho.

The reason for the Trojan War according to myth, was a beauty contest. Three contestants were seeking someone to judge their beauty; Hera, Athena and Aphrodite. Aphrodite won the contest, but only after she bribed Paris with Helen wife of Menelaus. Paris the judge, votes for Aphrodite by giving her an Apple. The other goddesses were furious and the conflict escalated out of control. The Greeks rallied around Menelaus and went to war with Troy.Like Rhaegar and Lyanna are often compared to Paris and Helen, figures of the mythical Trojan War, Robert is clearly meant to be considered relative to a maiden's fantasy, such as Snow White & the Seven Dwarfs or Beauty & the Beast:
The Blue Rose is a metaphorical "apple of discord". Like the apple of discord, it is nothing by itself, but in the right context leads to a larger conflict. Robert looked at Ned with flat, dead eyes and left without a word, his footsteps heavy as lead. Silence filled the hall.
“Where is the direwolf?” Cersei Lannister asked when her husband was gone. Beside her, Prince Joffrey was smiling.
“The beast is chained up outside the gatehouse, Your Grace,” Ser Barristan Selmy answered reluctantly.
“Send for Ilyn Payne.”
“No,” Ned said. “Jory, take the girls back to their rooms and bring me Ice.” The words tasted of bile in his throat, but he forced them out. “If it must be done, I will do it.”
Cersei Lannister regarded him suspiciously. “You, Stark? Is this some trick? Why would you do such a thing?”
They were all staring at him, but it was Sansa’s look that cut. “She is of the north. She deserves better than a butcher.”
He left the room with his eyes burning and his daughter’s wails echoing in his ears, and found the direwolf pup where they chained her. Ned sat beside her for a while. “Lady,” he said, tasting the name. He had never paid much attention to the names the children had picked, but looking at her now, he knew that Sansa had chosen well. Bending, Ned pulled back the cloak, dreading the words he would have to find for Arya, but it was not Nymeria after all. It was the butcher’s boy, Mycah, his body covered in dried blood. He had been cut almost in half from shoulder to waist by some terrible blow struck from above.
“You rode him down,” Ned said.
The Hound’s eyes seemed to glitter through the steel of that hideous dog’s-head helm. “He ran.” He looked at Ned’s face and laughed. “But not very fast.”
Most assume Gregor Clegane is the giant in armor made of stone in Bran’s vision of the Trident… yet he wasn’t present during the events Bran envisions. This dark shadow is a better fit for Robert, a veritable giant who won the throne at the Trident, who is first introduced as having gained eight stone, with a girth to match his height (like a mountain), and whose blood turns black when he is mortally wounded by a boar.

It would not be unusual for Bran to see both a person’s physical form and their shadow at the same time; this is how shadows work. Ned undoubtedly experiences inner turmoil in this scene, going along with injustice in service to a cowardly king despite the pain it causes his daughters. So, it's easy to see how the shadow with the face of the hound and the golden shadow are both cast by Ned, depicting a light and dark side at war within himself, representing his competing duties to his king and children which led him to execute Lady and accept Mycah's unjust death. It's not unusual that Ned would have multiple shadows, a dark and a light side making him grey as the direwolf on his sigil; recall, Stannis tells us that some lights cast more than one shadow:
King Stannis pointed a finger. “There you err, Onion Knight. Some lights cast more than one shadow. Stand before the nightfire and you’ll see for yourself. The flames shift and dance, never still. The shadows grow tall and short, and every man casts a dozen. Some are fainter than others, that’s all. Well, men cast their shadows across the future as well. One shadow or many. I’m posting this because I wanted to give the other noobs some things to think about, especially for those who want to progress “quickly” with low APM and real life responsibilities.
TLDR: Used Pig’s 2-base marine, tank, medivac all-in to get to Plat 1 in like six months, got pissed off at DTs and went with a different one-base all-in for each match up to get to Diamond 3. So it’s possible to suck less even if you inherently suck and don’t have time to get good. Replays below. Feedback welcome.
I started playing ranked in October 2022 after getting to where I could reliably beat Very Hard AI after about a month. I didn’t know what build orders were so I just did what the game’s training module had you do: build a supply depot, some barracks, some marines and marauders, and then go across the map to fight.
As you can guess, I got my ass kicked when I got on ladder and settled into Silver 1 after making some adjustments with an MMR of 2250. I sucked for like a month before I found Pig’s 2-base marine, tank, medivac all-in (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J2pIZNCtIis). Then I simply spammed that build all the way to Plat 1. I made Gold 3 after a month of that build in early December, then just a week letter I hit Plat 3. When that build clicked, I completely smashed Gold players.
It took me until the end of February to make Plat 1, however. Things do change in Plat. Everyone has a “real” build they’re working on. And by the time I was mid-range Plat 1, the 2-base all-in just stopped working. I ended up in Plat 2 again for a while.
The problems I faced in Plat 1 were attributable to other players scouting my build and army and being flexible enough to counter what I was doing. They saw mass marines and they build colossus or massed banelings. Or they built lots of vikings and some ravens. And they started to catch me out on the map when I wasn’t sieged. That would have been fine if I had better micro or scouting, but with a whopping APM of about 60, and just half a year of play under my belt, I just didn’t have the micro or the knowledge of the game to counter their counters (still don’t).
But what really got me pissed off in Plat 1 was all the early aggression and harassment, especially from Protoss. DT drop in my main at 5 minutes. Mass blink stalker when I have just one tank out. Cannon rushing. Proxy Stargate right outside my main with several shield batteries, bleeding me out with voids and tempests. Felt like a sick joke.
It’s at this level that I also started to get hit with competently executed roach ravager all-ins. Basically free MMR for the Zerg. Nothing I could do. Even after learning about the counter online I never really got it right. Plus, by Plat 1, Zergs know how spread creep, micro banelings, get surrounds, and focus fire tanks with mutas and roaches. So, you know, real competition.
Terrans at this level also started to rush, proxy, harass, etc. They especially start to get good enough with reapers to screw up your build timings and even snowball them and kill you. The fast 2 tank 8 marine doom drop was particularly annoying. And don’t get me started on fast BC.
So, at this point, I knew I had to make a change if I wanted to make Diamond, which had become my goal. I could either buckle down and simply get good by practicing new build orders against the AI, working on my mechanics, doing some micro training, off-racing, etc. But I have two jobs and a new baby and a wife and all that, plus my APM sucks, so all that Rocky Balboa shit wasn’t going to happen.
Instead, after getting DT dropped a few too many times, I decided to go to the dark side and deploy some “brass knuckle builds”.
What got me to Diamond was a different one-base all-in against each match up and the 2-base all in from Pig when it’s a random player. Why one base all-in? The theory is pretty simple, and applies to all RTS games (maybe even turn based as well), and others have said it better. But basically, if I invest in fighting units while you’re investing in tech or expanding your economy, and I attack you before you start producing off that larger economy or better tech, then I will have more stuff when I arrive at your base to kill you than you have to defend your base. There comes a point when your expanded economy or better tech will kill my army, but if I kill you before you get to that point, it won’t matter.
The real reason I switched, however, was pure rage: I was just utterly fucking done with DT drops. I wanted a build that would kill Protoss before the DTs came, or that would base trade well enough that the DTs on the map wouldn’t matter. Then I figured I’d just do the same thing to the other races as well.
After about a month, I found myself beating D3 and D2 players as I practiced the one-base builds in unranked. That was my cue to move back over to ranked and climb. And climb I did, and here I am.

Reactor marines, 2nd rax before factory, get stim ASAP, constantly produce marines and tanks, and when your two medivacs pop start moving across the map. Maybe mix marauders. Usually build a third medievac and keep pumping out marines, adding tanks if needed/as gas allows. The key to this is to keep the tanks alive as long as possible. Mules or scvs can help keep tanks alive.

Reactor marines, start tanks right away, starport with reactor right away, and move across the map as soon as the second tank is out. Scan the natural/main before you show up to find tanks. Always produce four vikings, then third tank, and then the fight dictates what you produce next. Can also proxy the starport, but I kept getting hit with cloaked banshees or doom drops when I did that so I stopped. Sometimes if things stall out at their base, I build two medivacs and drop the main with two tanks and eight marines, then push the front. That usually kills one of us and I can move on.

Probably the oddest build. I don’t know if this is a “real” build since I more or less just made it up through trial and error, but I have more success with it than I do against the other races with the other builds. Basically I reasoned that blue flame hellbats would absolutely wreck whatever zerg had, provided there was tank support and Thors on the way to deal with mutas. Add in marauders to tank damage. Two marines to start just to deal with early lings and to snipe the overlord, blue flame ASAP, then nothing but bats, marauders (w/concussive), and tanks. Sometimes +1 attack if I’m feeling lucky. Roll out when the second tank pops, then either build a third tank or go straight to thors. Thors are better for larger maps because by the time the thor gets there the mutas might be out and you want two thors to fight the mutas.
Vs. Random
No sense showing you my implementation of Pig’s build. The only variation I make is that I hit with 1-1 a tiny bit later than he hits with +1 attack because I drop my ebay sooner. Costs me some marines early on but seems to pay off later and it does give me detection sooner. Sometimes I’ll even put reactors on the 4th and 5th rax if there was early harass or a failed push and I think I have the time.
So, that’s it folks. I figure one day these builds won’t be enough to have fun anymore and I’ll decide to actually learn the game. Until then, you see you noobs at your natural between 4-5 minutes into the match.

TLDR: Used Pig’s 2-base marine, tank, medivac all-in to get to Plat 1 in like six months, got pissed off at DTs and went with a different one-base all-in for each match up to get to Diamond 3. So it’s possible to suck less even if you inherently suck and don’t have time to get good. Replays below. Feedback welcome.
I started playing ranked in October 2022 after getting to where I could reliably beat Very Hard AI after about a month. I didn’t know what build orders were so I just did what the game’s training module had you do: build a supply depot, some barracks, some marines and marauders, and then go across the map to fight.
As you can guess, I got my ass kicked when I got on ladder and settled into Silver 1 after making some adjustments with an MMR of 2250. I sucked for like a month before I found Pig’s 2-base marine, tank, medivac all-in (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J2pIZNCtIis). Then I simply spammed that build all the way to Plat 1. I made Gold 3 after a month of that build in early December, then just a week letter I hit Plat 3. When that build clicked, I completely smashed Gold players.
It took me until the end of February to make Plat 1, however. Things do change in Plat. Everyone has a “real” build they’re working on. And by the time I was mid-range Plat 1, the 2-base all-in just stopped working. I ended up in Plat 2 again for a while.
The problems I faced in Plat 1 were attributable to other players scouting my build and army and being flexible enough to counter what I was doing. They saw mass marines and they build colossus or massed banelings. Or they built lots of vikings and some ravens. And they started to catch me out on the map when I wasn’t sieged. That would have been fine if I had better micro or scouting, but with a whopping APM of about 60, and just half a year of play under my belt, I just didn’t have the micro or the knowledge of the game to counter their counters (still don’t).
But what really got me pissed off in Plat 1 was all the early aggression and harassment, especially from Protoss. DT drop in my main at 5 minutes. Mass blink stalker when I have just one tank out. Cannon rushing. Proxy Stargate right outside my main with several shield batteries, bleeding me out with voids and tempests. Felt like a sick joke.
It’s at this level that I also started to get hit with competently executed roach ravager all-ins. Basically free MMR for the Zerg. Nothing I could do. Even after learning about the counter online I never really got it right. Plus, by Plat 1, Zergs know how spread creep, micro banelings, get surrounds, and focus fire tanks with mutas and roaches. So, you know, real competition.
Terrans at this level also started to rush, proxy, harass, etc. They especially start to get good enough with reapers to screw up your build timings and even snowball them and kill you. The fast 2 tank 8 marine doom drop was particularly annoying. And don’t get me started on fast BC.
So, at this point, I knew I had to make a change if I wanted to make Diamond, which had become my goal. I could either buckle down and simply get good by practicing new build orders against the AI, working on my mechanics, doing some micro training, off-racing, etc. But I have two jobs and a new baby and a wife and all that, plus my APM sucks, so all that Rocky Balboa shit wasn’t going to happen.
Instead, after getting DT dropped a few too many times, I decided to go to the dark side and deploy some “brass knuckle builds”.
What got me to Diamond was a different one-base all-in against each match up and the 2-base all in from Pig when it’s a random player. Why one base all-in? The theory is pretty simple, and applies to all RTS games (maybe even turn based as well), and others have said it better. But basically, if I invest in fighting units while you’re investing in tech or expanding your economy, and I attack you before you start producing off that larger economy or better tech, then I will have more stuff when I arrive at your base to kill you than you have to defend your base. There comes a point when your expanded economy or better tech will kill my army, but if I kill you before you get to that point, it won’t matter.
The real reason I switched, however, was pure rage: I was just utterly fucking done with DT drops. I wanted a build that would kill Protoss before the DTs came, or that would base trade well enough that the DTs on the map wouldn’t matter. Then I figured I’d just do the same thing to the other races as well.
After about a month, I found myself beating D3 and D2 players as I practiced the one-base builds in unranked. That was my cue to move back over to ranked and climb. And climb I did, and here I am.
