2023.06.02 23:59 CazOnReddit Alright, Let's Talk About the 3rd Pick & a Potential Siakam Trade With Portland

Alright, Let's Talk About the 3rd Pick & a Potential Siakam Trade With Portland
So have you heard that the Blazers are looking to shop around the 3rd pick and Anfernee Simons for a star forward? Yeah, let's finally get into this.
The Blazers lucked themselves into a rather unique position, both with the pick they got - having jumped from 5th to 3rd in the draft - and with the team who managed to get the 2nd pick being the Charlotte Hornets who are likely to draft forward Brandon Miller over G League Ignite guard Scoot Henderson, with Scoot seemingly falling to 3.
This would make Scoot the 2nd young guard the Blazers recently drafted and their 3rd under 25 guard to play next to Dame...if they weren't trying to shop the pick around.
They have a perfect opportunity to finally do a rebuild...and yet, here we are with yet another rumor about the Blazers trying to build around Dame and get him the help they've left him without for...what, 8 seasons and counting? Like the Rockets who are alleged to be interested in moving the 4th pick, I don't think the Blazers really should be trying to do a two timelines, pseudo rebuild while contending around Lillard.
I also don't think the package they can put together is as great as it's often hyped up to be. As we'll get into, a package around Anfernee and the 3rd pick plus a player or pick or two is quite decent in a vacuum but it certainly isn't good enough to get to get you that Top 10-15 player in the league who can singlehandedly win you a series - if not, a championship. It certainly isn't enough to outbid the likes of the Jazz or, more significantly, the Thunder who may opt for a splash in the offseason as their core develops into a young, hungry playoff team with some greater veteran presence around them.
I'm just going to say it: If Portland really is saying "time's up" and putting together one last effort to compete against Dame, they need to do more than get Siakam, O.G., Karl-Anthony Towns or whichever star's name pops up in rumors leading up to the draft. Not to say those players won't improve the team, but none of them - and yes i'm including Siakam - are good enough to elevate a former lottery team like the Blazers over the past 2 seasons to a Top 3 seed, let alone guarantee a championship.
A duo of Siakam and Dame, Dame and KAT, etc. can be part of one's core championship team but they need the right supporting pieces around them in order to win. To put it mildly, the Blazers...do not have that. Jusuf Nurkic has seen significant regression as a defender and the bench is one of the few to make the Raptors bench look like a bastion of basketball greatness. It shows on the floor and statistically, and it's a large reason why the Blazers have been one of the worst defensive teams in the league over the past, one of the worst when it comes to rebounding and in general being near the bottom of the Western Conference before they pulled the plug on their most recent season in an attempt to tank for a Top 4 pick.
If the Blazers are actually going to commit to Dame, they need to engage in a paradigm shift this offseason. Rework the starting 5, the bench and go all-in getting Loyalty McLoyal the team he should have had around him for years instead of endlessly running it back with minor tweaks to who his #2 is.
That means either getting your pick back from the Bulls and shopping the 4 firsts/3 swaps you can or removing the protections and dealing out the 3/3 you would have to improve the roster. Don't just get Siakam, KAT or whoever and set them up to fail with Damian because it's not fair to either player to put them in that situation.
Go after Buddy Hield, see if Myles Turner or Clint Capela are going to be available, or if the Wolves are desperate enough to sign and trade Naz Reid to recoup some assets after the costly Gobert trade - if not, try signing him with the full MLE. And you don't stop there! However they plan to shake up the roster in this hypothetical scenario, they need to significantly improve the center position/rotation and their bench to give Dame an actual chance of winning a ring with what few years left they have in his prime.
Also fire Chauncey Billups, he's a bottom 3 coach and the only reason I can't say he is not the worst is because I can't say the Raptors coach will be objectively worse/better without knowing who will head either team. He isn't 3rd, that's for sure.
But anyway that's the Blazers prerogative. What exactly could the Raptors see in a potential pick that, presumably, revolves around Pascal Siakam?
Since I can be a bit of a wordy writer, i'm going to add some TL;DR sections for each playepick discussed in this little piece for those that want a quick breakdown.
Note: This is not a trade proposal; this is a compilation of the assets and players who could be included in a trade for Pascal Siakam. Additionally, this is not an endorsement of trading Pascal Siakam, etc. in a deal with the Portland Trailblazers.
Anfernee Simons
https://preview.redd.it/eon5unll7d3b1.png?width=640&format=png&auto=webp&s=2873b3d89092d0e0c221ee9817335918489f2e7e
The main player who's been the subject of a contentious discussion between Blazers fans and Raptors fans. Whether you think he's overrated, underrated or somewhere inbetween, it is undeniable that Anfernee Simons would have to be included in the trade at minimum.
I can't speak for the Blazers and I won't pretend to speak for all Raptors fans so let me just say this: I like Anfernee Simons. He's one of the more exciting players in the league under 25 even if he doesn't have the same ceiling as a guy like Zion or fellow player nicknamed "Ant" Anthony Edwards.
A borderline All-Star guard with a combination of shooting prowess and explosiveness, he had a breakout season in 2021/22 when Dame went down due to an injury and thus became the Blazers lead point guard in his absence. He's a genuine 3-level scorer who can splash from outside, pressure the rim for a high-flying dunk and he's effective in the midrange too. If nothing else, it cannot be overstated how nice it would be for this team to have another player who's a reliable, 38.7% from 3 volume shooter on a roster so thoroughly lacking in outside shooting
And before you say it, yes, Anfernee Simons is a point guard. This isn't a case like CJ where his skillset is that of a 2 who can do some playmaking but shouldn't run your offense, Simons does have some issues with dribbling the air out of the ball before making a pass, but he is a point guard. He isn't a typical point, operating more as a shoot-first point like Lillard, but he's still capable of cracking out a notable number of assists while getting buckets; he dished out 6 dimes a game with nearly 28 points in the games he's played without Dame as the lead point.
All 11 of them last year.

Yeah, you might have seen some posts or stats online of what Simons has done without Damian Lillard; in his breakout season of 2021/22, the Anferno was putting up a similar number of assists and cracked 20 points per game, albeit over a more significant sample size of 30 games. And in 2022/23, Anfernee Simons put up 27.9/2.9/5.7 (2.4 turnovers so an AST/TO of 2.38:1 which is solid) while shooting a staggering 41% from 3 on 11 3s.
Those numbers are impressive in a vacuum; his true shooting of 62% is especially notable. However, they require some context and should be taken with an enormous grain of salt.
For one, it's a very small sample size over a lengthy period of the season where teams haven't had to plan for Simons to be the main guard to focus their defense on. He's still the 2nd option so it's not like there's no film watching or the like, but if Anfernee Simons permanently becomes the lead point guard of a team, opposing teams will gameplan around him and his weaknesses more significantly than the very few times where he's asked to be the lead ballhandler in Dame's absence.
His 2021/22 stats, while still a limited overall sample size, do suggest he'll be able to dish out a similar number of dimes as the lead guard (Dame had been ruled out due to injury during the season so teams did have to gameplan around the Ant for a large portion of the season instead of a handful of games scattered throughout the season) and he still has room to grow as a playmaker but once again, it was only a sample size of 30 games so it is hard to draw much out from the games he played.
Speaking of drawing conclusions from said sample size: Yes the Blazers went 4-7 within that 11 game sample size - and bear in mind this sample included games where the Blazers were still trying to contend while facing a variety of teams i.e. not every team was a playoff or contender. That isn't great, however, Ant was generally not the main reason they lost since the 2022/23 Blazers as a whole were pretty terrible all year, even before they blatantly tanked. The same is also true of his breakout year when the Blazers lost Lillard due to injury, they just weren't a good team.
If there is a point of contention around Simons that one can draw from his past 2 seasons, it's his defense which...it's bad.
It's really bad.
He's improved this season on that end to the point where i'd say he's a better defender than Dame - even if his overall defensive rating doesn't support this, the eye test does - but that's like saying Spencer Dinwiddie is a better defender than Trae Young. While Chauncey Billups hasn't been doing either one of Portland's guard any favors, it doesn't change the fact that being better than one of the worst defenders in the league is not an accomplishment to be proud of. All coaching issues aside, Simons is still a notable negative on that end of the floor. He has a propensity for losing his man via ball watching, he's not great at closing out on the perimeter and he's not a lane disruptor by any means. It's not impossible for him to improve as a defender - he's 6'3 with a 6'9 wingspan and much of his defensive weaknesses come from a lack of discipline - but as of right now when his shots aren't falling he's a major liability on the court and his flaws on defense were not well hidden when paired next to another notably poor defender in Dame.
There are a couple of other habits that Simons needs to address - he could stand to be less trigger happy as a scorer and work more on his playmaking given all the promise he's shown in that area - but that's the main issue with Simons. He's a very skilled guard with a similar approach to the game as Dame on both ends of the floor. And we all know Dame isn't locking down the opposing team's point.
Does Anfernee Simons seem like he'll become a guard on the level of Dame? No but that's a ridiculously high bar to hold him to, especially with the limited opportunities he had and will continue to have when he's behind Dame in the guard pecking order. Anfernee is a good player who often shows glimmers of true greatness on offense but whose defense (or lack thereof) is going to require very careful teambuilding to limit exploiting said defense in the playoffs. Perhaps he'll need to be the full-time point to fully achieve his potential as a playmaker but while he doesn't scream All-NBA caliber, he's someone you can easily see eking out a couple of All-Star nods at his peak and is, at worst, a staring-caliber guard. As for whether he can be the lead of a championship contender...we'll get to that when we talk about the pick he'd come with.
TL;DR - Anfernee Simons is an intriguing young player with upside as an explosive, shoot-first PG but one whose poor defense does mean the team's starting lineup/bench has to be built around carefully to account for his current (and likely ongoing throughout his career) weaknesses.
3rd Pick
https://preview.redd.it/96pocramhi3b1.png?width=1000&format=png&auto=webp&s=3ee450641a298a5b1dee0da9fce0c7f652c60665
It's whomever is left from Scoot Henderson or Brandon Miller. Maybe you trade down to 4 for some more assets if you're a believer in Amen Thompson, maybe you take Amen if you think he's the best player available and the Rockets won't negotiate for Scoot/Miller but yeah, it's one of those three via the 3rd overall pick.
Before we get into the players, I do want to briefly mention that I actually did a post a while ago on a different sub going over trades involving the 3rd pick and to put it bluntly: The 3rd pick has good value but it doesn't have as much value on its own and trades involving the 3rd pick for an All-Star or even All-NBA caliber player are very rare.
The closest trade to what the Blazers would want in return was in 2000 where the Atlanta Hawks traded the 3rd overall pick to the Vancouver Grizzlies along with Brevin Knight and Lorenzen Wright for Shareef Abdur-Rahim and the 27th overall pick. That 3rd pick turned out to be future HoFer Pau Gasol but no one knew he'd become that at the time. As for what the Grizzlies gave up for the pick, Shareef Abdur-Rahim was not a perennial All-Star nor was he an All-NBA level player. He was a solid player that became an All-Star in his debut season for the Hawks...and that was his only All-Star appearance.
With that in mind, it is a bit wild that it's so commonly suggested that Simons and the 3rd pick alone should be enough to acquire an All-NBA talent like Siakam, especially with how much inflation we've seen in trades for players of that caliber of late or even players who are a step below. Concerns about his contract expiring lowering his value are baffling, as if a team's front office wouldn't talk to him about an extension before making such a trade. Moreover, it's not like the Raptors need to deal him out when they can simply re-sign him in 2024.
Now this year, when Scoot Henderson or Brandon Miller could be up for grabs, the 3rd pick has a lot more value given how highly praised those players are, so let's put aside the debate on what is fair for Siakam for a moment and talk about the presumed 3rd overall pick, Scoot Henderson.
The 2nd best player in a draft class containing the best prospect since LeBron James. He's projected to go 3rd because Charlotte is allegedly interested in taking Brandon Miller at 2nd but we'll touch on that later. For now, let's talk Scoot:
  • Henderson is a freakish athlete and a terrific floor general; he racked up an average of 6 assists a night on an AST:TO ratio of 1.94:1 and is a strong option on offense due to his abilities as a slasher
  • His usage as the G-League Ignite's offense, be it ball screens or handoffs, displayed his ability to break down a team's defense
    • To delve deeper into his production as an offensive guard, his percentage rate of ball screens (43.7%) is only matched or surpassed by 7 players across the entire NBA. 7!
  • Despite the athleticism, Scoot is generally good at controlling the ball and not turning it over due to careless mistakes driving to the basket
  • For a guard, he's a pretty solid rebounder and, if nothing else, he puts in the effort on defense even if he's not necessarily someone who screams "Future DPoY"
  • Intangibles are hard to really quantify but Scoot is the definition of someone who "has that dog in him" and he's someone you trust down the stretch to make the right move
  • He puts in effort on defense but he's only 6'2 with a 6'9 wingspan and, well he's no Kyle Lowry when it comes to taking charges or the like
  • His shooting is...a work-in-progress; he tends to default to long 2s which he isn't great at making (38% overall), his free throw percentage is only 75% and his 3-point shooting is a measly 31% off the dribble
Needless to say, there's a lot to like about Scoot; if Victor wasn't in this draft, he'd easily go #1 overall. He's often compared to Derrick Rose or even Russell Westbrook as this uber explosive guard who can seriously pressure the rim while generating solid passes for his teammates which is a good comparison though one obviously hope his outside shooting pans out more like Curry or Trae than Russ or Rose.
Losing Siakam would obviously hurt the team in the short term but as far as what Scoot brings, there is a lot of upside to him that would raise the ceiling of the team in the long run. His ability to get to the rim, combined with his athleticism would make him the perfect guard for a team that thrives in transition like the Raptors. He would also have chemistry with another player the Raptors have been rumored to be interested in/may take at 13 in Leonard Miller as they played on the same team but we'll talk about the 13th pick's potential prospects another time.
For now, let's go over one of the problems with trading for Scoot Henderson if he is still on the board, besides the obvious hypothetical of "he might never become a player as good as the one you're giving up" or "what do you do with Fred when you brought in Scoot and Simons" because what you're really asking is this: Is a backcourt of Scoot/Simons the team's guard duo of the future?
This brings me to my big problem with a “trade for Simons + 3” trade if the 3rd pick does end up being Scoot: A backcourt of two undersized guards, one of whom is unproven against NBA competition on defense and the other of whom has been one of the worst guard defenders in the league is not a duo of guards you can build a contender around in the long-term unless both of them become significantly improved defenders. Or at the very least, it's a duo that has historically not led to notable championship contention.
Blazers fans would know this well given their team has only had one year where they weren’t the in the NBA’s basement as far as defensive ratings go, be it with CJ or Anfernee as Lillard’s sidekick; the furthest they ever got with either was the Western Conference Finals and the best their defense has even been was 10th. Every other season, the Trailblazers defense has been amongst the worst in the NBA. Part of those Blazers teams' failures can be attributed to bad coaching, but a more significant portion of the blame be laid at the feet of Dame being a bad defender and undersized who has been paired with bad, undersized guards throughout much of his career.
You can get away with one bad defender or a starter who’s undersized for their position on a championship-caliber team which, if you’re rebuilding by trading away Siakam, that is what you’re hoping to take a step back for. As an example, Dirk Nowitzki wasn’t known for being a lockdown defender and yet the Mavericks won their first and only championship to date with Dirk as the weak link on defense. He was also a phenomenal offensive talent whose weaknesses on defense were mitigated by how much momentum he was able to generate for his team but I digress.
You can get away with running several smaller players for a limited time to force mismatches on offense with the right lineup. The Warriors dynasty comes to mind, where Golden State would close games using their “Death Lineup”. However, that lineup revolved around 4 Hall of Famers (Klay, Dray, Steph, Igoudala) where Steph is the lineup’s weakest link on defense, and this is before we acknowledge that they were able to include yet another HoFer in Kevin Durant to replace Harrison Barnes in a different incarnation of the Death Lineup from 2017 onward.
For that matter, it's not wholly impossible to win a championship with a duo of small guards - the Pistons repeated in the 89/90-90/91 with 6'3 Joe Dumars and 6'1 Isiah Thomas and the Bad Boy Pistons were contenders throughout the 90s - but it is damn near impossible if your lead guards are bad defenders. Whatever can be said about Thomas' various off-court controversies, notably with him being found liable for sexual misconduct during his stint heading a woman's basketball team a la the New York Liberty, he was a phenomenal defender, as was Dumars.
Hell, the Raptors won in 2019 while having Fred VanVleet and Kyle Lowry share the floor a fair amount of time in the Finals though it is once again worth noting that both were terrific defenders at the time. Even if one wouldn't call their efforts All-Defense caliber, they were both positives on that end of the floor.
Historically speaking, you cannot be a championship-caliber team with two of your starters being undersized negatives on the defensive end barring them being surrounded by generational defenders or said starters being generational offensive players who can make up for how many points you’re giving up on the other end of the floor.
Simons is a gifted scorer with good playmaking but is a truly sorry defender. Scoot Henderson is a talented passer but is undersized for the position and how he fares defensively with teams hunting him as the smallest player on the court will remain to be seen. But with neither of them likely to be a Dumars/Thomas-level defender and the offensive capabilities for one of them being the main question mark as to how good a player they could become, having both of them as the foundation to your team's backcourt seems to cement the duo's future as a non-contending entity.
Let's put this into perspective with some statistics: Of the past 40 years, the only championship to ever be won by a team with what could be considered a bad regular season defensive rating was the 2000/01 Lakers. That team had two generational talents in Shaq and Kobe, and that season is itself an outlier when compared to the rest of the Shaq/Kobe Lakers era that it shouldn't even count. All other championship teams were at least 12th or higher for their season with most championship teams being in the Top 5 in defensive rating.
By the by, in case you're wondering: That team who had 12th in defensive rating was the 1995 Rockets led by the generational talent in Hakeem Olajuwon and said rating had a lot to do with untimely injuries to the 95 Rockets core. That team they still managed to have the 7th best offensive rating in the league despite Drexler's absence for much of the season is a testament to Future Raptors Retiree Hakeem's skills as the best big man of the late 80s, early-to-mid 90s. Are we noticing a pattern here?
Even if we ignore the question about what to do with Fred, the question of what the Raptors backcourt looks like is far more pertinent if it is going to involve some combination of Scoot Henderson and Anfernee Simons with, presumably, Gary Trent Jr. and another guard coming off the bench for relief. Is a backcourt of Anfernee Simons and Scoot going to turn this team into a Top 3-6 offense for the season without plummeting this team's defense off of a cliff? And if you don't think so, when do you move one of them to open up the 1 or the 2 for another player?
This is a question the team will likely have to answer once they've seen how Simons and Scoot fit togethefit with the rest of the roster; I don't see a 3-team draft day deal where Simons or the 3rd pick are moved elsewhere barring that aforementioned moving down to 4th and I don't see this team without Siakam/with Scoot and Simons being a serious contender for several years even if they do pan out. But it is a question that has me concerned in regards to how this team will function when it's developing a dynamic duo of players who will be picked apart in the playoffs barring one of them turning into a terrific defender.
Whatever else one can say about Point Scottie or even Scottie Barnes when he was crammed into the starting Shooting Guard position for much of the year, it is hard to argue that having either Scottie or Trent & Simons/Scoot as your backcourt makes way more sense defensively even if having both Scottie and Scoot complicates matters on the offensive end since neither are great shooters and Trent's defense is a touch overrated at time due to is propensity to gamble for steals.
All this being said, it's not out of the realm of possibility that Henderson becomes an All-Defense-caliber player or for Simons to a climb out from the deep hole he's dug for himself as one of the worst defenders in the league, and Scoot is still a phenomenal talent. These concerns should be noted, but they shouldn't serve to deter from selecting him 3rd if such a trade were to go down. As a prospect, there's very few players in this draft class who could serve to singlehandedly raise the floor and the ceiling of this team in the long run.
Speaking of other players, however, it should be acknowledged that Scoot isn't the only potentially available player at 3; while all accounts suggest the Hornets prefer Brandon Miller at 3, Scoot is the best player available at 2 and there's no guarantee the Hornets draft for fit. So here's a quick rundown of Miller and a player the Blazers have recently worked out, Amen Thompson:
  • Brandon Miller is a 6'9 forward (boo, we have enough of those!) who can shoot (yay, we need more of that!) and has some notable playmaking upside even if his decision-making can be questionable at times. He's a player you could see as either a #1 or a high level #2 option on a championship team though he's not the most switchable guy on defense and you have the usual rookie concerns i.e. "he needs to get the NBA body to thrive". He's gotten a lot of comparisons to Paul George but i'd say his playmaking is further ahead from what PG13 was as a prospect.
  • Amen Thompson is someone I talked about in the trade for the 4th pick & he's a very interesting player. A high ceiling, low floor player with unreal athleticism, a 6'7 lead guard who's arguably the best passer in the draft class but has serious questions about the competition he's faced in OverTime Elite/his shooting being as bad as it was. Think Ja Morant but with defense and, again, at 6'7 with a much longer wingspan.
I feel like the trade makes more sense if the Raptors were to go for Amen or Miller but we won't know who the Hornets will chose on draft night until the day of & ideally you'd trade down for 4th to get Thompson plus assets if you're sold on Amen. Plus like I said, it is possible that Scoot does become a good or even great defender so one might not have to worry about choosing between him and Ant down the line.
TL;DR - Scoot is an amazing prospect but his pairing with Simons could be a major problem in the future if both don't improve defensively. Ironically, the 3rd pick becomes simultaneously more valuable for other teams/less valuable for the Raptors if it's Scoot and vice-versa if it's Miller due to those concerns. Thompson is a wildcard at 3 depending on who has the pick/how willing the Rockets are to trade up to 3rd.
Nassir Little
Portland is reluctant to deal out Sharpe. We can debate on whether or not it's fair value for an All-NBA caliber player like Siakam, how much his contract being expiring should affect a deal (we'll ignore the fact that he can be extended by Portland and that any front office making a trade like this should be doing their due diligence by speaking to Pascal Siakam beforehand) or how good Sharpe actually was as a rookie overall instead of solely focusing on that stretch where the Blazers let him do whatever because they were tanking but regardless, the Blazers seem intent on keeping him. Fair enough, Masai is likely aiming for more than Anfernee and 3 - especially for the reasons listed above if it is Scoot Henderson - but Sharpe is likely a hard sell for the front office even if they are going all-in i.e. they want to keep at least one young guy on the roster for the long-term.
That being said, there's still the matter of salary matching, and that's where one of Nassir Little or Sharpe has to come in (They're not going to move Nurkic in the deal for Siakam unless they have something lined up for their center situation i.e. tampering for Naz Reid); the only way for the Blazers to neatly absorb Siakam into their cap with just Simons is by renouncing their rights to Jerami Grant and they need to re-sign him/move him to the 3 (Grant is a really bad rebounder for a PF; the man is a career 4 RPG) if they are serious about competing with Dame.
So...yeah, Nassir Little. Little is what people think O.G. is: A good defender who is often injured, Little is a solid 3 & D wing who, unlike Anunoby, has never played more than 55 games for a given season. Granted, 2019/20 and 2020/21 were shorted to 72 seasons but regardless, injuries have hampered the 23 year-old in the same way that Otto Porter Jr.'s potential was sapped due to a career-long battle with injuries. Still, when considering his age and production, his newest contract ($28M/4 years) is amazing value when he's healthy.
But much like Otto (who I think technically could be sent in such a deal due to the rules around incoming/outgoing salaries), the question of when he's available is a common one. Little is a good young player but one whom you shouldn't get your hopes up about changing the team's direction.
TL;DR - A little salary (sorry) is needed for the deal to happen on draft night & Nassir would be a decent choice for forward depth off the bench. One will have to carefully factor in injury concerns when evaluating the team's depth.
Keon Johnson
So like I said, Sharpe is likely to be ruled out. I debated if I should cover him at all but i'm honestly not sold on Shaedon as a prospect and we've already met the quota for rants with the "Simons/Scoot frontcourt will be exploited" talks. That said, I don't think the Raptors would settle for just Simons and the 3rd pick or the 3rd pick plus assets from a 3rd team were Anfernee moved due to the aforementioned backcourt issues with Simons and Scoot. For now we have Keon Johnson.
Fun fact: When the Raptors were expected to draft 7th in the 2021 draft, Johnson was a common player mocked for the 7th pick.
He wound up going in the 20 to the Clippers (via the Knicks in a trade) who eventually fleeced the Blazers in a deal including him for Norman Powell.
Keon Johnson...hasn't really done a whole lot thus far. He was noted for having an impressive vertical of 48" at the 2021 combine which broke a previous record, he's a terrific athlete and he's about the same age as Scottie so he lines up with a rebuild or retool around Barnes...
...and that's where the positives end. Like I said, Keon hasn't demonstrated all that much on either team he's been on. For a guard, he's not a great ball handler, he isn't a good shooter, he's got decent size and the speed to be a good defender from 1-3 but his potential on that end does not All-Defense caliber. He'd be a throw-in that you'd hope can develop over time, likely spending a lot of time in the G-League because as of right now, he isn't going to be a significant contributor on either end.
TL;DR - Keon is on a rookie deal so you'd be taking a flier on him/betting on your development bringing out the best in him if he were included.
Other pick(s): As far as immediate draft capital goes, the Blazers have the 23rd pick in this draft, which is around the range where players the Raptors have been rumored to be interested in/interviewed (Bilal Couliby, GG Jackson) would likely be available. There's been some speculation that the Blazers could send this pick to the Bulls so they can get their owed pick back from Chicago but nothing concrete has come out regarding whether the Bulls would settle for that vs. hoping the Blazers make the 1st round and lose so they can get a pick in the 16-20 range.
That said, the future pick owed to the Bulls is where things get tricky if the Raptors did want a future 1st: The Blazers pick is protected until 2028. It is technically possible for them to offer a swap in 2029 but without the protections being removed on the Bulls-bound 2024 1st (The 2029 pick cannot be moved due to the Stepien Rule), any future draft capital would need to come in the form of the 2023 trade deadline's currency of choice: Second round picks.
Some of the notable 2nds include:
  • A 2024 2nd that could come from the Hornets or Wolves
  • A 2028 Warriors 2nd
  • This year's second via the Hawks which is 45th
  • The Blazers own 2nd in 2028
Not that these are a good substitute for a first-rounder but with the Blazers draft capital being restricted and the CBA's changes to 2nd round contracts, it's better than no future firsts if the 2023 Knicks pick is considered a bridge too far.
TL;DR - There is some interesting draft capital here beyond their own 1sts, especially if the 23rd pick is available in a deep draft like this, but ideally one would want a future 1st from the Blazers rather than a handful of 2nds given Dame's limited window.
Conclusion
I was originally going to talk about the 4th overall pick too but this got a bit lengthy so I made that into a separate post. As far as the 3rd pick package, in some ways it's better than one surrounding the 4th pick because Simons is a flatout better player than any one the Rockets would send back but it's also worse when you factor in Simons or Scoot's respective ceilings vs some of the potential prospects that could come in a 4th pick package?
You're getting significant depth at the guard position if it is Scoot/Simons but there's a huge question mark as to how good the defense will hold up with two undersized guards, one of whom is a bad defender, will hold up in the playoffs.

2023.06.02 23:01 Mission-Raccoon9432 Character Study: The Full Truth about Gorou Amamiya feat. Ai's Wish, The Director's Eye, Aqua Hoshino . PART IV

https://preview.redd.it/p3z2xpxbbm3b1.png?width=3840&format=png&auto=webp&s=20b8d7aad3138bebfd7b98d9a99df8a41fd026ba

In today's episode of our Gorou / Aqua study I want to make good on a promise from the introduction of the very first essay . We now have the overseeing outlook that is needed to feel the compelling psychological force that shapes Aqua's current behaviour . In this episode we will significantly come closer to an explanation why he in the latest timeline appears so malicious towards the people close to him . For that matter we will analyze Aqua's skillset as an actor he most notably showed during the ***"***I'll Go With Sweet Today" film set . I believe that this little Arc is literally key to understand Aqua's fate .

Thesis: Since Aqua realized that his father is still alive and made the decision to propose "15-Year Lie", he essentially performs a preperational phase to get into his role. He's manipulative, intimidating, pushes people away and all of this is related to his role as the movie's culprit, Ai's murderous fan.

https://preview.redd.it/jzfsoqoshm3b1.png?width=3840&format=png&auto=webp&s=00fd5e131c7a95f482f2c338b0c87b1e8b6cdc2e
This however as we have found out in PART II is ultimately the conequense of Aqua's delusions and his very specific personal understanding of the culprit as a reflection of himself who feels guilty for killing his mother when she gave birth to him.
We found out that Aqua's perception in literally all regards differs 180 degree from reality. Aqua wants to archive a certain outcome from this movie which stands in total opposition to Ai's wish. Although he thinks all he does is in line with it. This fundamental conflict born from trauma is the current plot driving tension in the currently for Aqua's skillset as an actor very important preperational phase.
And if we want to elevate this tension on a basically "eschatological" level the fundamental conflict as pointed out in yesterday's PART III will decide if "Entertainment" gets either saved or ultimately destroyed.

Ai's Wish
In yesterday's intermezzo essay we identified Ai's wish to be related to a vaguely by Gotanda titled vision of a "social phenomenom" or the cure of entertainment, cure of society for that matter. Ai planned to use her influence after the dome concert to start a public debate about the entertainment industry, thus she complyed with Gotanda to only say the truth in the documentary about her life. I'm sure that Gotanda and Ai both invisioned together that very noble cause and he promised her to fullfill it: "This is probably time for me to fullfill my promise" (C108 last panel). But Ai's wish also reflects on an individual level on her children Aqua and Ruby. Perhaps we can say that this reflection is the very reason for her determination to go down this path with Gotanda, as I yesterday argued that Ai had during her pregnancy a fundamental transformation from a "Venus" to a "Maria" archetype.
Her personal wish is for Ruby to become an Idol and for Aqua to become an Actor. As a loving mother who says that in her last moments she of course only wishes them the best in their life. At the same time she seems to not be afraid that her personal wish for her children could harm them. Thus it's strongly implied in her last words, that she invisioned them to be an Idol and an Actor in an entertainenment world that already experienced the desired reformation as part of her shared vision with Gotanda. In this entertainment utopia she saw the future of her children. She is not afraid.
Fundamentally that's her reason for her calmness after the knife penetraded her belly. For her there was no reason anymore to blame Ryosuke for his misdeed, in fact she already ascended to a state of mind mind in which "misdeeds" doesnt' exist anymore. She truely was enlighted by a vision in which even people like Ryosuke can find true happiness and love. In this utopia men like Ryosuke do not oppose danger to Ruby or Aqua. And she was confident that this vision will become a reality very soon. What I want to say is her "sweet talk" towards Ryosuke wasn't cold-hearted calculated to protect her children but came from a truely enlighted state of mind. She felt pity for a man who would shake hands with her so many times and who made her dear to her heart gifts. She felt pity that entertainment couldn't heal this fan but would corrupt and lead him on a path of self-destruction. She felt pity that her love couldn't reach him, because the industry as a regulator has polluted it. At the same time she knew change must happen. Gotanda for that matter - a character I really like - had such a strong lasting impression on Ai that there was absolutely no fear or doubt in her heart that the world will from now on only become a better place. Her death is the ultimate turning point. Her death should be the beginning of the end of a sick industry. She died with a satified smile that goes beyond the vague feeling of mere hope.
To give you an idea how this vision could look like: Well, for Ruby I think it's a world where Idols have "human rights", where they are not obsessed over from their fans to the point that they have to hide their private life or even deny its existence but where they can be artists and enjoyed by fans for their actual art. It may have been not clear in yesterday's post why I was pointing out the structural tension between Ai as Venus and her transformation to Ai as a Maria, a mother, when she fled Tokyo and came to the Sanatorium. Symbolically she fled the Venus-Status as the Evening Star, she fled from the Morning Star, her "Idol Fan" in the symbolic and actual representation of Hikaru with whom she had a sexual releationship. This transformation was actually portrayed very clearly after she gave birth:
When Ai came back from her Hiatus her performance became kinda mediakre. The real reason is because she lost her full venuslike sexual aura the fans used to like. As a mother she became chaste. It appears she also didn't had any more love affairs after Hikaru, which in itself is a symbol of chastity and transformation as both a woman but also how she perceives Art and Entertainment.
Then after her kids showed up at her event and performed an idol dance it evoked the most sincere maternal smile. And the fans loved it. Now they would more and more perceive her as a mother-like figure. I won't deny that lust is still a part of their attention but firmly believe it's now more clearly why the tension Venus vs. Maria is without doubt a structural element of the plot and that Ai did the first step to challenge the "Venusberg" by symbolically fleeing Tokyo and seek protection in the Goddess of Art's magic castle. The world she fled and tried to change is not the one she wants her daughter to be part of. She wants Ruby to be an idol in the utopia, she wants her offspring to be a better and happier version of herself as is the conviction of all loving parents.
For Aqua I can't say for sure right now but I feel this will be clarified through Hikaru's backstory. My best guess is that if the symbolic link of his name to Lucifer (as we showed in PART III) is right we might have here a metaphorical implementation of the mythological Lucifor too. Lucifer is a glorified angel but fell from heaven to establish his own kingdom - which could mean: Kamiki was a glorified actor but (for right now unknown reasons) stopped acting and established his own production "kingdom" meaning became part of the dirty entertainment industry and haunts down talent. So in one way or another something will happen in the acting-sphere of Art that will prevent tragedies like Hikaru's to happen again. In fact we know that he was most likely molested as a 11 year old child, which obviously shouldn't happen to anybody at all. In the end Aqua then can carry out the gifts and blessings that once were granted to Hikaru by becoming a better and happier version of him parallel to Ruby who becomes a mentioned better and happier version of Ai.
However Hikaru and "Tokyo" have a saying in this too. Ai's wish is not granted without a fight. And our heroes Aqua and Ruby have to actually realize this wish, which is fundamentally also carrying the hopes of the Goddess of Entertainment. And if we want to elevate this tension on a basically "eschatological" level the fundamental conflict as pointed out in yesterday's PART III will decide if "Entertainment" gets either saved or ultimately destroyed.

The Fallen Angel (1847) by Alexandre Cabanel

The Actor
There is a tragic irony to Aqua's critical view of his own acting ability. First of all he has a really unique skill which elevates him on a similar level like the pros Kana, Akane, Taiki etc. We will talk about this in a moment. But his underwhelming self-perception is also related to his complete refusal to accept Ai's last words.
As a man who - in his own eyes- ultimately failed to protect her, who basically killed her, he can't ever accept to be worthy of her envisioned future for him. This surely goes hand in hand with the emotional suppression he has to perform to avoid PTSD triggering. Thus his self-critisism has a strong autosuggestive moment to it. We will talk about the power of autosuggestion later again.
In fact we witness the beginning of his haunting delusion for that matter already in EP 3 of the anime, when he explained to Kana that he thought he could act but learned he couldn't. Gotanda in response wouldn't really agree but just accepted his opinion ("You heard what he said") although an episode earlier he noticed that Aqua had to be a pretty good actor to be able to deceive his twin sister. So clearly Gotanda has his own point of view but doesn't force it on him.
The image of Aqua looking at himself on videos is the exterior exemplification of his introspective self-critisism and we get very early on a clear hint how this fundamental misunderstanding will eventually blow up and head into total failure of Ai's, Gotanda's and also the crow girl's wish if he doesn't come back to his senses soon. Now this is only the autosuggestive and traumatic moment of his delusion. But objectively he is still a genius level gifted actor, which is the reason why his delusion is actually so dangerous. So, lets have a look at his talent.
[Footnote: What I ment with "the emotional suppression he has to perform to avoid PTSD" is that naturally he has a blessed joy in acting. He lliterally loves acting: "It's written all over your face" (Gotanda). Emotional acting is theoretically his forte. When shortly after Ai's death it would trigger PTSD through the guilt-complex he - as a self-preserving measure - started to cap his emotions. His acting has became average by this. Now, this is not yet a "performance of emotional suppression", but the beginning of it. It really developes during the Tokyo Blade stage play.
He was forced into a role where there is no way to just be mediocre. He had to perform excellent. And what he finally found was way of acting in which he unleashes all his emotions while suppressing them at the same time with almost superhuman intellectual power to keep himself out of the PTSD-Triggerzone. He basically invented a new form of acting: Acting as a true self-flagellation...and it caught the attention of the fetish Director of Lalalie Theatre Company so much Kindaichi. So his acting was still amazing. It's like an acting inception. He had to act an actor who hates acting while at the same time his true self loves it. So this incident gave us indirect evidence that theoretically an Aqua who overcomes his trauma and could act emotionally without self-restrictions would be an absolute BEAST of an actor.]

The Director's Eye

This instruction will become both a blessing and a curse

"I don't have Ai's talent. I don't have her captivating aura, nor am I good at acting. So I'll use everyting of my disposal. Props, camera, lighting, actors ... I'll utilize all of them. To be like Ai."

Aqua has always been good at questions about an author's true intentions. During his studies at Gotanda's studio this purely intellectually comprehensing eye developed to a creative and artistic skill set of how to implement an author's true intentions into a movie play as an actor. I call this his Director's Eye. This however is not a passive skill as an observer but an active performative skill as an actual actor. He has the abilitiy to utilize props, camera, lighting, actors, all of them with the purpose to create an Aura like Ai. In this particular scene where he plays the stalker he understands how he has to actually create a realistic illusion not only towards the camera but also towards the actors. He thus creates an intimidating aura that shifts the mood on stage because he wants the actors to get personal as he believes personal negative affections towards the stalker will help at least Melt and directly or indirectly also Kana to perform better. "Personal negative affections towards the stalker", huh...we will came back to this later.
In fact Melt wasn't the only one affected by it but even the professional Arima Kana was completely suprised. During the general rehearsal she perceived Aqua as a somewhat okayish Actor. Dude just did his job, can't complain. But when he stepped into the water puddles it really caught her by surprise and automatically created the illusion of "somebody came here who shouldn't be here, a stalker, a danger" and this feeling of hers was processed by her consciouss into "He became better in acting". But in reality he basically acted the same but he created a dangerous intimidating aura which made it more real. Kana felt intimidated.

In psychology this phenomenom goes by the term "suggestion". The term "suggestion" was introduced in the 17th/18th century and refers to the manipulative influence of an idea or sensation, resulting in the manipulation not being perceived or at least temporarily unavailable to consciousness. Etymologically, it can be traced back to the Latin noun "suggestio, -onis," which means addition, inspiration, or insinuation, or to the Latin verb "suggerĕre" (to supply, to suggest).
I****nsinuation meaning "instillment into the mind" and while it was subtle for Kana by intimidating steps that make his first line of text sound more scary, we actually get a very direct upfront depiction of this psychological principle by Aqua challenging Melts affection by literally whispering into his ear: Insinuation.

roasted
But that goes in both ways. Not only Melt grows in his realism by actually hitting Aqua but Aqua himself gets pumped up too. It helps him to get uglier and scarier. He gets in somewhat an ecstatic trance of autosuggestion (self-insinuation)

He's pumped but he knows exactly what for

As a result as shown in the Anime he forced the Camera to record the spirit and imagination that was trapped inside of the Manga-Panels they were filming. Thus he performaned his "Director's Eye".

https://preview.redd.it/sj50dr4vmn3b1.jpg?width=2552&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4b6d79290445a9bbbb5cfadcbf56c822f3e0dd19
It's kinda ironic that after he was attracted so strongly by her shining light he would dismiss his own influence on her: "this was her speciality". But Kana's cry wasn't mechanical at all, it was an honest expression because her emotions were truely in line with the emotions of the manga-figure.

https://preview.redd.it/x81eqhzion3b1.jpg?width=2552&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0718a99ac4425786d89f1a47ba7cb3e19e313de1
Kana is this girl who doesn't know love and was protected by someone for the first in her life. And Aqua - very ironically - who was inside the plot playing the stalker became at the same time her saviouprotector in rea life.

\"Oh, so he really did it for me\"
Kana already fell in love. It's not an act anymore
This is only for you, Aqua . A face of a girl who just fell in love .

So to put it together: Aqua really didn't anticipated that his influence on her psyche would go THAT far, thus he dismissed his influence over her beautiful shining appearance. This was his first experience with his directing power as an actor but it just went insanely good. Her reaction was not calculated but it was literally created by his actions, by his insinuation. So what we learn is: This is a very effective but can perhaps become a very dangerous tool in the future.

https://preview.redd.it/rk67ztlusn3b1.jpg?width=2552&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f9faab23d450f9aaacb65a76ac12461d1c763032

Well, Aqua might not been aware of her love back then but clearly during her Idol performance and at the Tokyo Blade Stage Play he became very aware of his influence over her. He can by his own will whenever he wants pretent that he is her only "moon" - an orb that wants to be kissed by the bright light of a star and by that provoke Kana's ecstatic joy to finally have an object worthy to illuminate.
https://preview.redd.it/q4vbmpvswn3b1.jpg?width=1527&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1334b2f2f60c69b92b40c1c5c91e4987e8e52673

The lovesick Kana couldn't perform a smile in front of anonymous fans, it was only when Aqua appeared and performed an idol dance exclusively for her that she opened up. While at the first glance it technically doesnt look like influence by his unique skill it actually is. We defined it as performative influence, so by dancing visible to her eye sight he became part of the scenery and thus influenced performatively. The actual fans wouldn't notice, but what they notice is the finished product which is a marvelous first concert: So, checks the boxes for the Director's Eye.
The Tokyo Blade stage play however is obvious. He was kinda pissed that Kana shut her ego down and then utilized his skill to produce ad lips and prepared the stage for her similarily to "I'll Go With Sweet Today".Not surer if it really matters to figure if he did it "for her" or "for the play" but as a result the full potential of all actors could be activated so the overall performance of the stage play surely became better. In fact Kaburagi was just shocked and was fantasizing about Arima Kana maybe being "the real deal" and Ruby realized that Kana is really an actor.

Epilog
This power is an important and by the Manga well established tool in Aqua's hands and we will in the next part explore how exactly he utilizes it for the "15-Year Lie" movie. In PART V we will unite our gained knowledge about his trauma and his TRAGIC misconception of Ai's wish with our expertise on his actual talent and skills and look at his actions precisly after he learned that his father is actually still alive.
And in PART VI we will go back to Gorou and Sarina and talk again about a one hinted topic from PART III: A fundamental structure to explain their "actual problem" and why the Goddess of Entertainment picked exactly these two as her sword wielding heroes.

Thanks for reading and stay tuned!

2023.06.02 22:50 shrubby18 2022 Accord Hybrid EX-L Impressions after 2 Months

So i used to have a 2017 Hyundai Sonata Sport and traded in that car for a used 2022 Accord Hybrid EX-L with 5k miles on it. Mostly for the better mileage 35mpg vs 48mpg advertised
Here are my initial impressions of the Honda vs a 5 year old Hyundai after a couple months.
  1. Honda poor turning radius, can't pull into a lot of places because i have to stop and back up and pull in. Hyundai runs circles around it. Had very little problems in the same parking lots.
  2. No hood struts on the Honda? Like really for the amount you pay and the hood still only has a stick to hold it up and it's a very heavy hood as a small person would probably have trouble getting open. The cheap Hyundai had it as standard.
  3. No door sills, Again the cheap Hyundai had at least cheap plastic ones so you don't scratch your sill getting in and out with heels or boots.
  4. Auto trunk opening as you stand next to it only available on touring model. Mid level Sonata sport has it standard. This is really nice if you have you hands full and you walk up and the trunk pops open.
  5. While the Hyundai doesn't have wireless Android Auto the add on you can by works flawless and connects every time. The Honda version is hit or miss a lot of times and when it does connect it can take several minutes if it does connect.
  6. Wireless charging the Hyundai doesn't have either but the after market versions do a great job while the Honda version has a hard time keeping up with the charge especially if you're Android Auto or Car play running it seems. The phone gets very hot sometimes and would do good to have some venting/cooling in that compartment. Sometimes i have to plug directly into the USB charging to get it up to a good level.
  7. No auto cruise control on the Hyundai model i had. The Honda seems to do weird things like wanting to follow cars off into turn lanes or brake for cars in turn lanes as you're passing them.
  8. No auto breaking on the Hyundai model i had. The Honda can break hard and be jerky, seems it needs some more refinement on this and still warns you to brake! haha isn't that what auto braking is supposed to do for you?
  9. No lane keep assist on the Hyundai model i had. This is kind of weird also as it will want you to go with the turn lane and you have to fight it to keep with the main traffic lane sometimes. It will tell you to keeps hands on the wheel on long stretches' where you don't need to steer because it's a straight so you have to move the staring wheel to appease it lol. I think this may be the reason this car was used with only 5k miles on it.
  10. Engine noise during acceleration on both cars are loud yes because they are 4 cylinders but i thought the Honda would be more quiet with the electric motors but it seems to sound like it straining hard.
  11. Both have poor interior lighting and have replaced with LED's vs incandescent bulbs. Why do they even used those anymore?
  12. With Hypermiling the Honda i can get 55mpg but avg 52 on my daily combined city/highway driving. The Hyundai Hypermiling the best i could get was 39mpg. Both get around 600 miles on a tank 18gals on the Hyundai vs 12gals on the Honda. While Hyundai makes a a Hybrid Sonata, i've heard stories where you can't start the car if it's left for a few days like at the airport and coming back to a dead car so i chose the Honda because of that.
  13. 100k mile drive train warranty standard on the Hyundai, Option to buy up on the Honda. 5yr 60k miles standard bumper to bumper on the Hyundai, 3yr 36k miles on the Honda. One of the reasons i switched from my Civics to a Sonata.
So some things are a bit nit picking i know but it seems some standard equipment have just been short changed on the Honda for the level of vehicle.
I'll be looking to put struts on the hood and maybe there's a hack for the trunk opening?
What's everyone elses impressions/thoughts???

2023.06.02 22:32 tillterilltilltill [Meriva B] high pitched noise and jittering steering wheel

Hi guys,
I just bought a used Meriva B automatic as my first car. The test drive last week went great and it's from a renowned dealer with warranty. After the weekend I'll contact them but I wanted to hear your ideas too.
Two days ago when I collected the car I realised on my way home a high pitched and loud noise like a continuous whistle or really fast ringing mostly from 40 to 70 km/h (ca. 25 to 45 mph). Seemed to be very loud from outside the car too as I checked by opening the windows.
Bizarrely it was mostly noticable in overland drive and not so much in city traffic. Also not as loud in city traffic. It seemed to change in tone a bit with the steering wheel in different left or right lock.
Kind off a bummer as I thought that the dealer had to notice it on their test drive after it went through their service station.
I also noticed a little jitter in the steering wheel when driving slow. Not really sure if it's just the bad streets here or something is wrong. It felt a bit like the lane assistant I know from my driving instructors VW Tiguan when it tried to slightly countersteer (but at speeds above 60 km/h [37 mph]).
Do you guys know what may prompt these issues?
TIA!

2023.06.02 22:25 TacmedRN4 Quality auto knives do NOT randomly go off in your pocket…

…as long as they are carried properly and maintained well.
I just want to dispel a myth that I see all over the internet.
I used to have an irrational fear of automatic knives and required a safety on any auto that went into my pocket. I passed up on many awesome knives and great deals because I’d this fear.
After a decade of carrying mainly autos, I have finally convinced myself that a quality automatic knife that is carried properly and maintained well (ie kept clean) will NOT “misfire.”
Push button, axis auto, DA OTF, SA OTF; if carried properly and used as designed, they are perfectly safe. Even my Benchmades with large protruding buttons don’t fire accidentally, even with the safety off.
Of course this does NOT apply to cheap knockoffs and poorly maintained garbage.
Take care of your tools, and they will take care of you.

2023.06.02 22:15 0L_Gunner Resignation vs Termination: Advice Needed for Big Law Corporate Legal Assitant Position

Hello jobs,
I'm facing a bit of a professional crossroads and could use some wisdom from those who might have faced similar situations.
I've been a Big Law Corporate Legal Assistant for the last eight months. Recently, during a weekend firm event, I was told my performance needed immediate and dramatic improvement in the next 2 weeks if I wanted to continue in my role. Given several factors, I believe that meeting these expectations is near impossible.
Here's the dilemma: should I wait it out and potentially be terminated, or should I preemptively resign right after my last paycheck comes in?
I don't have any plans to stay at this firm or even in this city. I want out of SoCal. I'm applying to law schools this year, and my main concern is the possible impact this situation might have on OCI (On-Campus Interviews).
I should also mention that I am currently working part-time as a tutor and have the opportunity to immediately transition to full-time tutoring. Therefore, immediate unemployment isn't a concern.
I'm interested in hearing your thoughts, experiences, or advice on how to navigate this situation, particularly in regards to how resignation vs. termination might be perceived by future employers or law schools.
Thank you in advance for your insights!

2023.06.02 22:12 0L_Gunner Resign or Wait to Be Fired? Need Guidance for a Big Law Corporate Legal Assistant Position

Hello careerguidance,
I am currently in a predicament regarding my career and would truly value any advice or experiences you could share.
I've been working as a Big Law Corporate Legal Assistant for about eight months. However, at a recent weekend firm event, I was informed that significant and immediate improvements in my performance were required if I were to keep my position. For various reasons (which I can delve into if necessary), I find this level of improvement to be practically unattainable.
So, here's my predicament: do I wait and potentially face termination, or do I resign just after my final paycheck is due? I've no intentions of remaining at the firm or even in the city. As a native of SoCal, I am planning on moving away and applying to law schools this year, with my primary concern being any potential effects this situation may have on OCI.
Additionally, I should mention that I have been tutoring part-time and have the capacity to transition to full-time tutoring almost immediately. As such, immediate unemployment isn't a major concern for me.
In your experience, what would be the better course of action in such a scenario? How might resignation vs. termination be perceived by law schools or future employers?
Thanks in advance for any guidance you can provide!

2023.06.02 22:10 imjusthereiguessss Advice : DIY post-Bacc vs SMP vs Applying and hoping for the best

Hi All. Stats: 2.9 cgpa 3.0 sgpa. 509 MCAT. URM. 2 pubs. ~4k paid clinical hours and little to none volunteering. Clinical hours include scribing in an ED, medical assistant @ an urgent care, and clinic lab technician. Have also shadowed Urologist and OBGYNs. Also dealt with serious household changes during high school and undergrad that I hope to talk about in my statement(s).
I was hoping to apply this cycle for 2024 fall but with all of my MCAT prep , I failed to get materials together and now I’m feeling insanely rushed and just not good. I was planning to apply mostly DO with HUSOM as my top MD choice, however due to my stats I want to make sure my app is as strong as it can be but realistically it is not there. Was thinking of calling the admissions office of schools that I’m interested in to ask them what my chances are and if I would make it through screens, if any.
Benefits of waiting another year allow me to get more volunteering and also boost my gpa. Cons would be the cost of doing postbac/smp and disappointing people around me (which honestly…). All signs point to me waiting one more year and correcting my app.
Now SMP vs DIY-Postbacc. Ideally I would like to do the GEMS program but no conditional acceptance plus the cost is concerning.
Any advice? Sorry for the word blurb but my mind has been racing.

2023.06.02 22:10 J-Chub $150K penalty for late Solo 401K Filing?

Failing to file 5500-EZ for a solo 401K that has $250K can result in severe penalties of up to $150,000. T The one hope is there is a Penalty Relief Program for Late Filers where you send a check of $500 with a late filing. So the difference is pretty drastic with a $500 penalty vs. a possible $150,000 penalty .
I'm hoping to hear back from anyone w/ experience with this. Is the $500 late Filer Program pretty much automatic relief? Was it easy and done with after you filed? Or is this more discretionary, such as alternative methods (reasonable cause arguments) that involve uncertainty and waiting months for a decision?
Also, when does IRS typically send a CP 283 assessment on this? That is important since it would stop you from using the Relief Program. Does the CP 283 Assessment have to be triggered with a late or incorrect filing first, or do they just send one to you out of the blue if you did not file the 5500 altogether?

Thank you, everyone.

2023.06.02 21:26 Bard_of_Light [Spoilers Extended] LBJ: The Horned Demon of the Trident

Robert's Rebellion Theme Song: The Czar Mastodon
Don't stay; run away He has ordered assassination Don't stay; run away The henchmen are gathered and waiting Don't stay; run away Your role as usurper is found out
This is part of a series exploring the hidden motives and actions of the main players during Robert's Rebellion, named LBJ in reference to the influence of Lyndon B. Johnson and the Vietnam War on GRRM's views and writings on war. LBJ also indicates considerations over whether Lyanna + Bobby B = Jon Snow. Previous installments include:
Previous parts argued that Robert Baratheon was complicit in a plot to overthrow the Targaryen dynasty. This scheme used Rhaegar's mistaken crowning of Lyanna at Harrenhal to form a believable, malicious lie that the crown prince abducted her. Certain members of the infamous STAB alliance, with assistance from the Martells and Tywin Lannister, all secretly conspired together to place a pliable pawn as king, wrestling control from a dynasty that no longer had dragons to enforce their rule. Lurid evidence was given which shows Robert had Rhaegar tortured, as Cersei tortured the Blue Bard, and we also saw more subtle hints that Lyanna herself attempted to avenge her family at the Trident, with the aid of innate skinchanging abilities.
This part aims to provide additional evidence that Robert lived up to his moniker, the Demon of the Trident, casting him as close to black as grey can get. King Robert is an avatar for all the worst flaws of Westerosi culture, a man enabled to wield massive power who yet skirted any sense of responsibility and chose to commit a mountain of moral transgressions in service to his personal desires.
Robert's face was dark with anger. "How many times must I tell you to hold your tongue, woman?"
Cersei's face was a study in contempt. "What a jape the gods have made of us two," she said. "By all rights, you ought to be in skirts and me in mail."
Purple with rage, the king lashed out, a vicious backhand blow to the side of the head. She stumbled against the table and fell hard, yet Cersei Lannister did not cry out. Her slender fingers brushed her cheek, where the pale smooth skin was already reddening. On the morrow the bruise would cover half her face. "I shall wear this as a badge of honor," she announced.
- A Game of Thrones Eddard X

The Horned Demon of the Trident

Next had come King Robert himself, with Lady Stark on his arm. The king was a great disappointment to Jon. His father had talked of him often: the peerless Robert Baratheon, demon of the Trident, the fiercest warrior of the realm, a giant among princes. Jon saw only a fat man, red-faced under his beard, sweating through his silks. He walked like a man half in his cups.

Robert Baratheon bears a striking resemblance to Gaston from Beauty & the Beast, who imprisons his romantic interest and lies to incite violence against a rival. Gaston is driven by jealousy of the Beast and humiliation over Belle's rejection. Disney’s adaptation of Beauty & the Beast was released in 1991, just five years before A Game of Thrones was published.
Video: Gaston Beauty & the Beast
Video: George RR Martin on Writing for Beauty and the Beast
Martin has shown keen interest in Beauty & the Beast; adapting the tale for TV in the late 80s was a high point of his career. He even named his bookstore in Santa Fe Beastly Books, and named the cinema next door for Jean Cocteau, who also adapted the tale and created an earlier version of Gaston). This concept of kidnapping one’s romantic interest and blaming it on a rival to incite violence also crops up in The Princess Bride, which Martin has stated is his favorite fantasy film after the Lord of the Rings series.
Behaving like Prince Humperdinck from The Princess Bride or Gaston from Beauty & the Beast, driven by rage over the incident at Harrenhal and a family history of Targaryen betrayal, Robert lied about his queen of love and beauty and made Rhaegar out to be a beast, having them both kidnapped (with the help of his allies) but pretending otherwise as a pretext to win the throne. He then had to bury this secret, as he would lose support if it was known that the rebellion was built on such a malicious lie.
Martin is obviously inspired by Disney. In the last part, we showed how the torture of the Blue Bard, ordered by Cersei to extract a confession to undermine Margaery, is meant to reflect the story of Snow White, in which her vain and wicked step-mother is told by a magic mirror that the princess is more beautiful, leading her to send a huntsman to kill her. The huntsman takes Snow White into the deep of the wood but lets her flee, presenting a boar’s heart to the evil queen instead. Similarly, Robert is a huntsman who is killed by a boar, with the aid of strongwine supplied by his evil queen. Additional elements of Disney's Snow White & the Seven Dwarfs can be seen in parallels between Robert's only loss at Ashford and Dunk's trial at the Ashford Tourney in The Hedge Knight.
When Dunk travels to the Ashford Tourney, he recites lyrics from the Seven Dwarf's song Heigh-ho.
Off to Ashford to see the fair maid, heigh-ho, heigh-ho, Dunk thought miserably as he dug.
- The Hedge Knight
Like Snow White had Seven Dwarfs to defend her, Dunk defended himself in a Trial by Seven at the Ashford Tourney, and Rhaegar was accompanied by half a dozen companions when he went missing, enough to defend himself in a Trial by Seven. A troupe of a half dozen comic dwarfs also appear in The Mystery Knight, using pig bladders, like Robert was piss-drunk when he was killed by a pig. Dunk was championed by Robert's grandfather, Lyonel Baratheon, who defeated Robert Ashford during the tourney. Lord Lyonel later rebelled against the Iron Throne, after Duncan the Small betrayed the Laughing Storm by breaking off a betrothal to his daughter, similar to how Rhaegar betrayed Robert by crowning his betrothed at the Harrenhal Tourney. Duncan the Small's betrayal led Egg to arrange a marriage between his daughter Rhaelle and Lyonel's heir, which put Robert Baratheon in the line of succession; this family history would color Robert's perception of Rhaegar's betrayal, driving him to improve upon his grandfather's revenge.
Steffon was the name given to Robert Baratheon's father; Dunk was betrayed by red-apple Steffon Fossoway at Ashford, which led his cousin Raymun to create an offshoot branch, the green-apple Fossoways. A tender, protective Fossoway husband is used at the Purple Wedding to demonstrate how callous it would have been for Rhaegar to intentionally crown another women with his pregnant, delicate wife Princess Elia present. A poison apple brings down Snow White, after the evil queen discovers the huntsman replaced her heart with a boar's heart, conjuring up Robert's death scene which reminds Ned of his promise to Lyanna:
“Serve the boar at my funeral feast,” Robert rasped. “Apple in its mouth, skin seared crisp. Eat the bastard. Don’t care if you choke on him. Promise me, Ned.”
“I promise.” Promise me, Ned, Lyanna’s voice echoed.
- A Game of Thrones Eddard XIII
"The quarrel between Green and Red Apple Fossoway in the Hedge Knight story is another example of 'discordant apples'... At a tournament of all places." - The Blue Rose of Discord by u/Bronze_Age_472
The reason for the Trojan War according to myth, was a beauty contest. Three contestants were seeking someone to judge their beauty; Hera, Athena and Aphrodite. Aphrodite won the contest, but only after she bribed Paris with Helen wife of Menelaus. Paris the judge, votes for Aphrodite by giving her an Apple. The other goddesses were furious and the conflict escalated out of control. The Greeks rallied around Menelaus and went to war with Troy.
The Blue Rose is a metaphorical "apple of discord". Like the apple of discord, it is nothing by itself, but in the right context leads to a larger conflict. It symbolizes how small things can create huge conflicts, how things quickly spin out of control. When Rhaegar gave the crown to Lyanna, nobody was happy... Just like the Judgement of Paris right before the Trojan War.
Like Rhaegar and Lyanna are often compared to Paris and Helen, figures of the mythical Trojan War, Robert is clearly meant to be considered relative to a maiden's fantasy, such as Snow White & the Seven Dwarfs or Beauty & the Beast:
Would that Ned had been able to say the same. Fifteen years past, when they had ridden forth to win a throne, the Lord of Storm’s End had been clean-shaven, clear-eyed, and muscled like a maiden’s fantasy. Six and a half feet tall, he towered over lesser men, and when he donned his armor and the great antlered helmet of his House, he became a veritable giant. He’d had a giant’s strength too, his weapon of choice a spiked iron warhammer that Ned could scarcely lift. In those days, the smell of leather and blood had clung to him like perfume.
- A Game of Thrones Eddard I
In the last part, we used the evil queen's magic mirror from Snow White to provide insight into Robert through Cersei. Like he projected Lyanna onto Cersei on their wedding night, Robert projects his own actions onto Rhaegar, while caressing the cheek of Lyanna's statue and secretly lamenting to himself that he was with her sexually just once:
The king touched her cheek, his fingers brushing across the rough stone as gently as if it were living flesh. “I vowed to kill Rhaegar for what he did to her.”
“You did,” Ned reminded him.
“Only once,” Robert said bitterly.
- A Game of Thrones Eddard I
This subtext is mirrored by Jon Connington's love for Rhaegar, as he laments that Rhaegar ass-ended his tower only once. Connington then states that all the women cried to Rhaegar's music, like Lyanna cried at Harrenhal, reinforcing the link between this passage and the scene in the crypts.
Yet when they parted, Jon Connington did not go to the sept. Instead his steps led him up to the roof of the east tower, the tallest at Griffin's Roost. As he climbed he remembered past ascents—a hundred with his lord father, who liked to stand and look out over woods and crags and sea and know that all he saw belonged to House Connington, and one (only one!) with Rhaegar Targaryen. Prince Rhaegar was returning from Dorne, and he and his escort had lingered here a fortnight. He was so young then, and I was younger. Boys, the both of us. At the welcoming feast, the prince had taken up his silver-stringed harp and played for them. A song of love and doom, Jon Connington recalled, and every woman in the hall was weeping when he put down the harp. Not the men, of course. Particularly not his own father, whose only love was land. Lord Armond Connington spent the entire evening trying to win the prince to his side in his dispute with Lord Morrigen.
- A Dance with Dragons The Griffon Reborn
Robert's false accusation of rape mirrors Lord Mathis Rowan's daughter's lie which landed Dareon, a singer and harpist, like Rhaegar, on the Wall.
It made her angry to see Dareon sitting there so brazen, making eyes at Lanna as his fingers danced across the harp strings.
_
He is a man of the Night's Watch, she thought, as he sang about some stupid lady throwing herself off some stupid tower because her stupid prince was dead. The lady should go kill the ones who killed her prince. And the singer should be on the Wall.
- A Feast for Crows Cat of the Canals
Jon Snow ends up at the Wall as an indirect consequence of Rhaegar being falsely accused of the rape of Lyanna. Jon later betrays the Watch to save (fake) Arya and is murdered as a result, like Arya murders Dareon for desertion; if she understood why Dareon took the black, maybe she'd be more forgiving of his betrayal. She might not be, because of the same conditioning that prevents Ned from showing mercy to Gared after he was chased south of the Wall by a direwolf. Likewise, if Rhaegar told Robert that he crowned Lyanna by mistake, Robert would still be unable to forgive the public humiliation he suffered as a result. And so despite Rhaegar's willingness to defend himself in a Trial by Seven, Robert went along with the rebel's plot to overthrow the Targaryen dynasty, which involved abducting both Rhaegar and Lyanna, and stashing her in a tower for the duration of the rebellion.
He found himself thinking of Robert more and more. He saw the king as he had been in the flower of his youth, tall and handsome, his great antlered helm on his head, his warhammer in hand, sitting his horse like a horned god. He heard his laughter in the dark, saw his eyes, blue and clear as mountain lakes. “Look at us, Ned,” Robert said. “Gods, how did we come to this? You here, and me killed by a pig. We won a throne together …”
- A Game of Thrones Eddard XV
Horny as ever and near the tower of joy, travelling alone to maintain his secrets, Robert sought out his lady love after his only defeat at Ashford; fear of death has a way of driving men back into the womb. Robert claimed Lyanna at the tower she was imprisoned in, and she used his hunting knife, the one given to him as a gift from Jon Arryn, to defend herself.
Remember what Ygritte told Jon Snow, outside of the tower Queenscrown?
“A man can own a woman or a man can own a knife,” Ygritte told him, “but no man can own both. Every little girl learns that from her mother.”

A teenage human trafficking victim who was initially charged with first-degree murder after she stabbed her accused rapist to death was sentenced Tuesday in an Iowa court to five years of closely supervised probation and ordered to pay $150,000 restitution to the man’s family.
Speaking of knives...
King Robert sent the Catspaw by u/M_Tootles:
If blaming a Targaryen for his own misdeeds worked once, why wouldn’t Robert try it again?
This was something else: poison in the dark, a knife thrust to the soul. This he could never forgive, no more than he had forgiven Rhaegar. He will kill them all, Ned realized.
- A Game of Thrones Eddard XII
Sometime after his loss at Ashford, Robert appeared at Stoney Sept wounded and alone, while waiting for Ned to bring reinforcements from the North.
He had lost it all at Stoney Sept, in his arrogance.
Robert Baratheon had been hiding somewhere in the town, wounded and alone. Jon Connington had known that, and he had also known that Robert's head upon a spear would have put an end to the rebellion, then and there. He was young and full of pride. How not? King Aerys had named him Hand and given him an army, and he meant to prove himself worthy of that trust, of Rhaegar's love. He would slay the rebel lord himself and carve a place out for himself in all the histories of the Seven Kingdoms.
- A Dance with Dragons The Griffin Reborn
Robert fathered his bastard Bella in a brothel before the Battle of the Bells, a nod to Belle from Beauty & the Beast. This is just one of many acts that depicts his bestial nature; despite being in the midst of a war he claims to be fighting for Lyanna, Robert still found time to fuck all the whores at the Peach:
As she sat in the common room in her stupid girl clothes, Arya remembered what Syrio Forel had told her, the trick of looking and seeing what was there. When she looked, she saw more serving wenches than any inn could want, and most of them young and comely. And come evenfall, lots of men started coming and going at the Peach. They did not linger long in the common room, not even when Tom took out his woodharp and began to sing “Six Maids in a Pool.” The wooden steps were old and steep, and creaked something fierce whenever one of the men took a girl upstairs. “I bet this is a brothel,” she whispered to Gendry.
“You don’t even know what a brothel is.”
“I do so,” she insisted. “It’s like an inn, with girls.”
He was turning red again. “What are you doing here, then?” he demanded. “A brothel’s no fit place for no bloody highborn lady, everybody knows that.”
One of the girls sat down on the bench beside him. “Who’s a highborn lady? The little skinny one?” She looked at Arya and laughed. “I’m a king’s daughter myself.”
Arya knew she was being mocked. “You are not.”
“Well, I might be.” When the girl shrugged, her gown slipped off one shoulder. “They say King Robert fucked my mother when he hid here, back before the battle. Not that he didn’t have all the other girls too, but Leslyn says he liked my ma the best.”
The girl did have hair like the old king’s, Arya thought; a great thick mop of it, as black as coal. That doesn’t mean anything, though. Gendry has the same kind of hair too. Lots of people have black hair.
“I’m named Bella,” the girl told Gendry. “For the battle. I bet I could ring your bell, too. You want to?”
- A Storm of Swords Arya V
This bestial nature and Ned's willingness to enable it is put on full display when Robert returns to the Trident in A Game of Thrones. Robert allows Lady and Mycah to be killed as vengeance for Joffrey’s injury, despite later admitting he knew his heir was lying. Joffrey sustained this injury at the Trident because he drunkenly misperceived the fight between Arya and the butcher’s boy, and cruelly acted on his ‘chivalric duty’ to defend noble ladies. Likewise, Robert (and everyone else) misperceived Rhaegar’s intent when he crowned Lyanna, and his fervor for vengeance led him to go along with a plot to abduct her and pin the blame on Rhaegar, like Joffrey lied about what transpired during the fight. Both Lady the direwolf and wolf-blooded Lyanna were held accountable for crimes they were innocent of; Lyanna’s crowning may have suggested to Robert that she actively enticed Rhaegar, like rape victims are routinely scrutinized for their attire and other non-sexual behaviors to suggest they somehow invited their rapes. Ned went along with these obviously unjust actions, out of loyalty to his friend and king, and to prevent further harm to his family.
All Ned could do was take her in his arms and hold her while she wept. He looked across the room at Robert. His old friend, closer than any brother. “Please, Robert. For the love you bear me. For the love you bore my sister. Please.”
The king looked at them for a long moment, then turned his eyes on his wife.
“Damn you, Cersei,” he said with loathing.
Ned stood, gently disengaging himself from Sansa’s grasp. All the weariness of the past four days had returned to him. “Do it yourself then, Robert,” he said in a voice cold and sharp as steel. “At least have the courage to do it yourself.”
Robert looked at Ned with flat, dead eyes and left without a word, his footsteps heavy as lead. Silence filled the hall.
“Where is the direwolf?” Cersei Lannister asked when her husband was gone. Beside her, Prince Joffrey was smiling.
“The beast is chained up outside the gatehouse, Your Grace,” Ser Barristan Selmy answered reluctantly.
“Send for Ilyn Payne.”
“No,” Ned said. “Jory, take the girls back to their rooms and bring me Ice.” The words tasted of bile in his throat, but he forced them out. “If it must be done, I will do it.”
Cersei Lannister regarded him suspiciously. “You, Stark? Is this some trick? Why would you do such a thing?”
They were all staring at him, but it was Sansa’s look that cut. “She is of the north. She deserves better than a butcher.”
He left the room with his eyes burning and his daughter’s wails echoing in his ears, and found the direwolf pup where they chained her. Ned sat beside her for a while. “Lady,” he said, tasting the name. He had never paid much attention to the names the children had picked, but looking at her now, he knew that Sansa had chosen well. She was the smallest of the litter, the prettiest, the most gentle and trusting. She looked at him with bright golden eyes, and he ruffled her thick grey fur.
Shortly, Jory brought him Ice.
When it was over, he said, “Choose four men and have them take the body north. Bury her at Winterfell.”
“All that way?” Jory said, astonished.
“All that way,” Ned affirmed. “The Lannister woman shall never have this skin.”
He was walking back to the tower to give himself up to sleep at last when Sandor Clegane and his riders came pounding through the castle gate, back from their hunt.
There was something slung over the back of his destrier, a heavy shape wrapped in a bloody cloak. “No sign of your daughter, Hand,” the Hound rasped down, “but the day was not wholly wasted. We got her little pet.” He reached back and shoved the burden off, and it fell with a thump in front of Ned.
Bending, Ned pulled back the cloak, dreading the words he would have to find for Arya, but it was not Nymeria after all. It was the butcher’s boy, Mycah, his body covered in dried blood. He had been cut almost in half from shoulder to waist by some terrible blow struck from above.
“You rode him down,” Ned said.
The Hound’s eyes seemed to glitter through the steel of that hideous dog’s-head helm. “He ran.” He looked at Ned’s face and laughed. “But not very fast.”
- A Game of Thrones Eddard III
Most assume Gregor Clegane is the giant in armor made of stone in Bran’s vision of the Trident… yet he wasn’t present during the events Bran envisions. This dark shadow is a better fit for Robert, a veritable giant who won the throne at the Trident, who is first introduced as having gained eight stone, with a girth to match his height (like a mountain), and whose blood turns black when he is mortally wounded by a boar.
He looked south, and saw the great blue-green rush of the Trident. He saw his father pleading with the king, his face etched with grief. He saw Sansa crying herself to sleep at night, and he saw Arya watching in silence and holding her secrets hard in her heart. There were shadows all around them. One shadow was dark as ash, with the terrible face of a hound. Another was armored like the sun, golden and beautiful. Over them both loomed a giant in armor made of stone, but when he opened his visor, there was nothing inside but darkness and thick black blood.
- A Game of Thrones Bran III
It would not be unusual for Bran to see both a person’s physical form and their shadow at the same time; this is how shadows work. Ned undoubtedly experiences inner turmoil in this scene, going along with injustice in service to a cowardly king despite the pain it causes his daughters. So, it's easy to see how the shadow with the face of the hound and the golden shadow are both cast by Ned, depicting a light and dark side at war within himself, representing his competing duties to his king and children which led him to execute Lady and accept Mycah's unjust death. It's not unusual that Ned would have multiple shadows, a dark and a light side making him grey as the direwolf on his sigil; recall, Stannis tells us that some lights cast more than one shadow:
King Stannis pointed a finger. “There you err, Onion Knight. Some lights cast more than one shadow. Stand before the nightfire and you’ll see for yourself. The flames shift and dance, never still. The shadows grow tall and short, and every man casts a dozen. Some are fainter than others, that’s all. Well, men cast their shadows across the future as well. One shadow or many. Melisandre sees them all.”

Alfie Allen: You know, I asked him about who Jon Snow’s real parents were, and he told me. I can’t say who, but I can tell you that it involves a bit of a Luke Skywalker situation. It will all come to fruition eventually.
This series will conclude next time with a foray into Ned's inner turmoil, examining thoughts and actions which indict his friend and king. To preview where this series is headed, in its full audio/visual glory with greater detail, look here.

2023.06.02 20:52 _uneven_compromise Long feedback & suggestions post after 500 hours

My feedback after ~500hrs, #71 on leaderboards atm. 5k hours in Tarkov if that matters to anyone. :')
1. Queue system changes:
After the queue system changes half of my games are empty, rest of them have 1 or 2 teams. Space combat is completely dead, I either spawn first and see no ships/one ship at the other end of the map or I spawn in late and everyone is in POIs already. I can bring biggest ships solo with no fear of being shot down before I make it into the raid. Having to wait 3-5 minutes to get into a PvE game really ruins it for me.
2. Ship guns opinions and suggestions:
Flak is above everything else after the buff, and the fact that it's on the smallest and cheapest available chassis makes other ships kind of useless (for space combat, disregarding ship stash size). All of the other ship guns are too weak, I'd rather have the default 100mm cannon instead of anything that's not flak, rocket artillery or torpedoes.
- Flak Cannon - Revert range buff, or halve the current range and lower the dmg by 20. With lowered damage (assuming you can hit every shot which is easy with Flak) it would still destroy Scouts and Interceptors with 1 reload, Heavies with 2 and Capitals with 3, but wouldn't kill people inside ships as fast as it does now.
- Dual 25mm - The gun is easy to use, has decent projectile speed, but the reload speed makes it way worse than the default 100mm. Halving the reload speed would double the dps in longer fights, making it have 15 more dps including reload than the rustbucket cannon which I feel would be fair. Buff the reload speed to 3s, or 4 if it turns out to be too strong.
- 75mm turret is the worst ship gun right now. Has 0 AoE even though visually the explosion is quite big, deals no damage, has very slow projectile. Buff it to 100 (or even 125), give it 3m AoE and make the projectile as fast as the 100mm one. It would still have lower overall dps than the 100mm but would have decent consistent dps if you could hit the shots.
- Triple Turret has very good stats, but slow projectile makes it meh compared to other options. Buff the projectile speed so it's the same as 100mm projectile. Maybe reduce the dmg to 200 if it turns out to be too strong.
- Rocket Artillery - The only ship gun that's good without being OP. Leave as it is.
- Dual Rocket - Buff damage to 100, or even 125. Would have overall slightly less dps than 100mm turret, but stronger burst dps.
- Torpedo launcher - A very specific gun that's both OP and useless depending on the situation. It's the only ship gun that can consistently kill people before they get to the pods if they're not spamming large medkits. I'd say leave as it is for meme value, but could be buffed to dual rocket projectile speed with lowered damage. Dual Rockets would need a projectile speed buff then.
- Howitzer - Look how they massacred my boy. It was the most satisfying ship gun in game. Revert the nerf, buff damage back to 250.
- Nuclear Launcher - Good as it is.
I'd also suggest making an actual turret gunner view using the port camera 'overlay' with some basic HUD and a crosshair, locating the view on the top of the gun turret. The camera bugs out with certain guns making it unable to see where you're aiming because the turret model gets in the way, especially on the new ship guns.
Most of the ship guns don't hit exactly where you aim, the biggest culprit being the Strike Frigate. I feel that issue turns many people away from ship combat or running something else than a Rustbucket. Making the guns hit where the crosshair is would be a huge QoL change.
3. Ship customization:
I really don't like that a feature got completely removed from the game. It was fun running/running into weird builds and trying stuff out.
Ship customization could also be the solution to the 'breaching problem' for people who complain about getting breached right at the start of the game - there could be a 'breaching armor' customization option that would reduce the speed of the ship by a decent margin while disallowing being breached before the ship is destroyed. You could be safe from instant breaching at the cost of being an easy target or being the last ship docking into POI.
Could also allow other options - buying lighter armor so your ship is faster with a downside of being destroyed easier, or armor that's weak to certain weapon types (normal projectiles, flak, rockets/torpedoes) and strong vs. others. Would have to be represented visually on the ships in some way. New ship models could be used to represent different modifications, eg. breacher scout model - scout with anti-breaching armor. Or current ship variants could be sold as different chassis' with the default 100mm cannon with option to upgrade them as before the UA patch.
Some customization could be also balanced by allowing different gun types with certain customizations, eg. light turret guns - 100mm, 75mm, dual 25mm, dual rockets, rocket artillery, maybe flak. Heavy turret guns - Triple turret, howitzer, torpedo launcher, nuclear launcher. If you want to bring a big stash and good armor - you can't use heavy turrets because there isn't enough poweroom in the ship to run it all. Bigger ships could have more room/power to use more customizations at the same time.
Unlocking better ship chassis in shop could be an option, so when you start you can only buy scouts, then you pay to unlock interceptors and so on.
No level requirements, so if someone wants to focus strictly on space combat could just grind the money and buy whatever they want. All of it would also be a money sink to be able to do something with all the money which is very easy to get and would allow to change focus while prestiging - eg. on my first prestige I focus on in-raid stuff, then on the second one on space combat to switch things up a bit.
4. Gameplay issues/suggestions:
- After recent hitreg changes the torso hurtbox while someone is ADSing is too big and covers the head. It requires me to aim at the top of the head to land a shot that's not tanked by arms, which results in the gun covering most of the model so if the opponent crouches or moves I can't see it.
- Breaching spawns, one of the biggest problems for me. I hate dying right after breaching Merchant just because someone spawned right behind me and it feels equally shitty when I get a free kill because I spawned right behind someone. Add a simple check if a player is near a breaching spawn and spawn the next player somewhere else. I understand that sometimes there may be too many players but if that happens less often it wouldn't be as annoying.
- Being able to operate airlock doors manually. It's irritating that I have to go through the locking/unlocking animation just to access the ship stash. Let me leave the door open, use the ship stash then close it. Same goes for airlock camping, I don't really have a problem with that in general, I understand that it might be a 'balance' decision but just sitting there without being able to close the door feels... Illogical? Maybe add a 30s cooldown for the outside door, the current one is way too punishing especially when people camping the airlock still have huge advantage.
- Change the handling of mouse input. No idea why it isn't just raw input, mouse smoothing/acceleration is a bad thing in any FPS game period.
- Make the UI sound slider lower the sounds of picking up stuff/crafting in the inventory, no idea why it's tied to effects volume. Scrapping machetes hurts with high volume on headphones.
- Equipping and throwing grenades could be a bit faster and automatically switching to the last used weapon after throwing one would be a nice QoL feature.
- Fall damage, one of the weirdest things in the game - jumping over the railing on the rustbucket stairs takes 3% of the hp while dropping all the way down from high command on Navy deals maybe 15%. Make the players not take damage when jumping from low height but increase the damage while jumping from bigger heights.
- Crafting time should be reduced to 0 or increased so you have to wait and plan ahead for crafting bigger items. Right now it's just a minor annoyance where I have to alt-tab for 2 minutes while waiting for a ship to craft. If crafting times would be increased allow us to get more crafting slots in some way. I'd rather have instant crafting though because the fact that preparing for a game is super fast compared to other games in the genre is a definite plus.
- Adding a compass. A simple addition that would help with teamplay, especially in space combat to help with pilot and gunner coordination.
- Add situational spawn triggers? I know AI isn't much of a problem in this game and is probably worked on, but having AI spawn while doing certain things on map like opening a Vault/Depot, accesing some areas (High Command) would be a cool thing. But maybe I'm biased because my games are very empty lately.
- Stash management - It would be nice to be able to CTRL click items both ways, but I guess it's going to be polished out later after adding content and more core stuff into the game.
5. Guns balance suggestions/opinions:
- Bring back the AP mine oneshot and disable the red light. They're hard to get and there's not many situations where it's guaranteed someone will walk into one. Make them deal decent damage to the ship if detonated onboard or make the breaching destroy them before the player spawns.
- Buff Viper. It's a rare weapon that's really cool, but the only way to kill someone with a Sten is to land headshots and Viper doesn't allow you to do it easily. Allow us to put Sten attachments on them at least.
- Buff shotgun spread, the recent change ruined them completely. Revert the change, I know adsing to reduce spread isn't realistic but is a decent solution for them to not suck and be usable at the same time without people running and gunning with them all the time.
- Make the body of the M16 scope smaller, it covers too much of the screen to be usable. The reticle could also be smaller. SVT scope sensitivity issue is probably known to the devs already so I'm hoping it will be fixed too.
6. ZTH:
Unpopular opinion, but ZTH is ok as it is. I was also pissed off at the POIs not appearing, SAS Captains/Commando Majors not spawning and other RNG things, but it's the only long-term goal along trader levels in the game right now so not being able to rush through it is fine by me. I switched to just playing the game regardless of having ZTH targets on the map and doing them if I get blessed by the RNG gods.
7. POIs and suggestion about getting the POI that you want:
Terraformer and Prison are both great maps that are mostly ignored by the players. I'm afraid that after adding soloqueue they will be even emptier because the playerbase will be divided into 2 parts.
What if players were able to unlock and craft coordinates that allow to get into a specific POI - You could find disk drives/CDs/floppy discs/whatever in the computers, then pay a large amount of money to allow one time entry to a specific POI. I know that Asteroid Mine would probably be full every raid, but if some people would want to have a calm raid they would select Prison or Terra, and if enough people decide to do that sudeenly you got a raid with some people and action in it. Also less players would leave just because they didn't get the POI they want. Would work even better if all raids would be a single POI raid. The idea obviously requires more refinement. There could also be a bonus for going into a raid without coordinates like +10% exp for going random.
Thank you for coming to my TED talk, sorry for any errors, English isn't my primary language.
The game is great, I love how SIG managed to get what's fun about extraction shooters and create a fun and unique experience that's also approachable for a casual player. I hope it'll get as much traction as it deserves and become a success after release.
Also devs hit me up if you need QA help - I got 10 years of QA experience and have some free time right now.

Strategies for a common relationship challenge
“I want to connect intimately with my partner–to have great, super-passionate sex, or even just to cuddle and gaze into each other’s eyes for a little while. But I have to get the kids to school, and get everything done for my job, and take Mom to her doctor’s appointments, and the new puppy isn’t housetrained, and… and… and…”
If you feel like you have too much on your plate, and an ever-smaller portion is getting allocated to romantic time, you’re in good company. This is one of the most common things I hear from my clients. We’ve all got tons of responsibilities, tons of work, tons of projects, and anything that’s not 100% pressing tends to get pushed back and then even further back. (Ask me how I know! I’ve got every burner running in my life, too.)
So, what’s an overachiever to do?
  • Get in touch with what you really want. Focus on the emotions here. Consider: What do I want to experience? Feelings of being engaged, fulfilled, connected, or…? What kinds of activities (or inactivity) give me the experiences I am seeking?
  • Take stock of the many activities that are filling up your time. Which ones give back to you? Which ones light you up? And which ones drain your energy?
  • Prepare for discovery. It’s possible that this internal assessment will result in discovering that having some peace and quiet or “me” time comes before sex. That’s perfectly fine and very common! In that case, it will be interesting to see what happens when you get that need met. Will you find yourself with more energy for things like sex and romance? Maybe, maybe not, but it’s worth trying the experiment just to learn more.
  • Look for your inner motivation. What do I want more of, and why? If you want more sex or connection with your partner, why do you want that? How will it serve you? Why is it important? Perhaps because it feels great to be close, because it makes you feel loved and chosen, because it feels wonderful to have access to a different side of your partner–whatever’s true for you. Find the internal motivation that enables you to actually do what is necessary to make it happen.
  • Prepare to let some things go. Acknowledge that in any given period of time you probably won’t get everything you could possibly want, or do everything you could possibly do. Figure out realistically how often you are willing to give something else up to make room for the things that keep falling off your list (but that you really want for yourself). Hint: many people drop some of the things that drain energy in order to make room for some things that create beautiful energy.
  • Organize yourself around taking action on what is important to you. If the change you want was going to happen automatically, it would already have happened. You will probably need to take some action to make something different happen, and you can leverage your motivation (see above) to help you take action. Focus on why it is important and how it will pay off if this feels like a stretch or a challenge.
  • Consider asking for assistance. Would this be more successful if you and your partner took a teamwork approach? Maybe a burst-of-energy applied to household responsibilities could free up a little time for both of you. In my home, this might be a 30 minute cleaning frenzy to create some psychic space for enjoyment in a less chaotic space, or maybe one of us tackling some errands while the other does yardwork, so we both will have an hour free at 3 pm. Working together as a team with focused energy tends to bring up the tone of interactions as a whole. That’s likely to have cascading effects for every part of your relationship, and it might also result in more sex. Try it yourself if you haven’t!
  • If need be, call on more hands. You might consider enlisting your larger community: can your friends or family take the kids for a night? Can you consider a trade with friends–maybe treating them to dinner in exchange for help with a task that’s been looming over your head? Can you plan a “paperwork party” or “extra-stuff-purge party” or “mending party” with music, snacks, and company to get through some of the tasks that are distracting you from connection?
Since we’ve all recently been through a global pandemic, I also want to highlight that there are seasons in life. Some seasons have room for more sex, some are for recuperation, and some can be crisis times when it works best to just keep your head down and keep moving.
If you are in a crisis period, don’t beat yourself up over not having as much time or desire for connection. However, it’s very worth putting some serious thought into how you will intentionally recover once the crisis is over:
  • How are you and your partner going to work together, making sure you can bounce back from this busy season?
  • How will you know when the crisis is over and you can start moving back towards each other?
  • How do you create the space within yourself to allow your partner to start moving back towards you?
  • How do you break the habit of feeling super stressed out?
Being intentional about this makes all the difference, because it can be easy to fall into a habit of just moving farther apart as life places more demands on us.

2023.06.02 20:20 Remote-Potato-8229 TUM MSc Math vs. IP Paris MSc Applied Math and Stat (M1)

I've been presented with a delightful conundrum: I have an offer from IP Paris for their MSc Applied Mathematics and Statistics (M1) program, and I'm eagerly awaiting an offer from the MSc Math program at Technical University of Munich (TUM). As a passionate aspiring Quantitative Researcher, I turn to you for your experiences and insights to help me make an informed decision.
Here are some key questions I'd love your input on:
  1. Location : Paris vs Munich for quant jobs ?
  2. Academic Rigour : Which program better equips students with a deep understanding of applied mathematics ?
  3. Industry Connections: Which program boasts stronger ties to the industry, providing exceptional opportunities for internships, research collaborations, and job prospects for international students?
  4. Research Opportunities: Are there ample research prospects within the institutions or through partnerships with industry players? Which program offers a more hands-on approach to research and real-world applications of mathematics?
  5. Work Environment and Student Experience: Could you share your experiences regarding the work environment, faculty support, student community, and extracurricular activities at TUM and IP Paris? Any noteworthy differences between the two?
I warmly welcome any personal anecdotes, advice, or insights from current or former students of either program. Your valuable input will assist me in determining the ideal fit for pursuing excellence in the realm of quantitative research.
Many thanks in advance for your contributions! Let's embark on this thrilling journey together!

2023.06.02 20:19 SilverScorpion44 June 8th will decide where MK stands on the FGC hierarchy for this generation

This thread isn’t directed at casuals who play MK solely for the story and Krypt content
If the gameplay reveal for MK1 is anything less than phenomenal; SF6, Tekken 8 and ArcSys next game (most likely dbfz 2 or another Shonen IP) will be the new “Big 3” in fighting games.
After the record setting launch for SF6, the days of NRS coasting off MK/DC Comics popularity are over. Many NRS loyalists are not playing NRS games long term and are transitioning to SF and Tekken. MK1 has to deliver a new and fun gameplay experience that will entice new players from other FG communities to want to play MK. I think the Kameo mechanic may be an attempt to try and lure in some of the MvC fanbase. Boon has said multiple times that he wants to make a Marvel game and perhaps he’s using MK1 as a testing dummy to see how a potential knockoff MvC style Marvel vs MK game would do. But if come June 8th that it turns out that Kameos are just ToT assists with no depth, then the longterm competitive life for MK1 won’t be good. I hope Ed Boon and NRS doesn’t disappoint next week.

2023.06.02 20:12 cclrd93 Tube Feed Conversions for Nursing

I am an RD that is a consultant for 3 buildings, really I am the ONLY RD for these 3 buildings but I am paid by Healthcare Service Group.
My whole point is that I can't be 'on call' whenever these facilities want me to be. One of my facilities takes this to mean that when it comes to Tube Feeds they can change them without consulting myself or an MD/PA/NP...sometimes these changes are not documented in the patient's charts either.
When I started at this building nursing changed tube feed formulas whenever they thought it was needed (stating formula is out without checking the stock room). They do a lot of other things without me signing off on it...but the main issue today Is that when I started at this building the nurses had some conversion sheet 'Jevity 1.5 is out? Then replace it with Jevity 1.2 at an increased rate of x.'
When I first saw it I joked and told them to 'tear it down and burn it' turns out I may have been a bit too rash ... you see nursing still forgets to contact me when formulas are out (which why do they wait until they finish the last bottle???) And they just use the chart with a photo on their phone (since the chart was removed and replaced by my contact info).
Until Wednesday nursing did not notify myself or MD/PA/NP or document change in chart. I brought this to the DON and ADON and the nurses were educated to contact me. So now Wednesday night after 7PM I receive a call about a formula that is now out. I was on site at this building until 5 that day and this was never brought up. It was an original order of Jevity 1.5 @55ml/hr x24hrs which I changed to Jevity 1.2 @60ml/hr x24 hrs though I could have increased it to 65 to better match the needs the original formula provided.
Then on Thursday I am at another site interviewing and assessing residents with assistance from their families when needed. I get a call during an interview but automatically send a text saying 'please text me'. Anywho a voice-mail is left about another formula being out and needing my approval to change to another formula. After looking at the patient's chart I notice that the formula mentioned is not correct as they reported Osmolite 1.5 when the patient is actually ordered for Glucerna 1.5. Also I know Osmolite 1.5 is in stock because 1 day before there were 5 full cases and only 2 people ordered for it. I call back but no one picks up, apparently the nurse had already left, I sent an email with my recommendations and a request to be notified prior to being on the last bottle...seems reasonable right?
Today I get a call from the DON who is mad that I am not available to always answer my phone. I explain again that I work 3 facilities! She tells me that I shouldn't have told them to contact me if I wasn't going to be available to take their calls. I suggest texting me because I can respond back quicker...but it interferes with HIPPA...even if it's just a room number? Anyways I call my supervisor because this is getting out of hand and she suggests that the nurse calls me prior to making changes and during that time they wait for me they can use the chart and I will get back to them ASAP...apparently this is too confusing for the nurses so I am teaching them next week...
Since the chart is gone now does anyone know where I can get one?
